Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a GBA port of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Sega Genesis. This port was released to mark the 15th anniversary of the original game, which also included the release of Sonic '06 around the same time. This port is infamous for being a terrible conversion to the GBA, which includes buggy graphics, tons of slowdown, wonky physics, and butchered music in comparison to the original game.
Tuffcracker ( tasvideos.org/... ) manages to complete the game despite all the issues with this game, in record time.

It's weird to think I had a better fifteenth birthday than Sonic the Hedgehog.
This North America exclusive port was released on the exact same day as the XBOX 360 version of Sonic 06'.

Making a TAS of this game is a huge challenge.
I'm in awe of anyone who manages to finish it in less than 20 minutes.
Having almost no visibility, botched physics, and weird audio samples, this train wreck of a port was really insulting to the Sonic franchise.
Being able to make a TAS out of this really impresses me. Good on you, man!

....IT CAN BE REAL BAD. Though I admit I actually like this version of Marble Zone's music.
Also 3:50 is the point where it becomes painfully obvious that the claim that this was a port of the java version is true - look at those 2 frame block breaking animations.
in the end credits, the slowdown and bad physics throws off the timing of sonic's movements. anybody who has beat Sonic 1 on a Genesis a bunch of times knows how those scenes always go
I'm with SomecallmeJohnny on this one, this was THE worst sonic game of 2006. This is worse than sonic 06. and even the TAS shows that crystal clear.

At least Sonic 06 was... sometimes playable. Also you can laugh at the stupidity of some of the things that don't work.
This game on the other hand is practically unplayable.
apparently disabling sound reduces lag, so if it works it could've been used here
The TAS author felts like the run would feel too "barren and empty" with the sound off, so they didn't do so.
Ugh, that type of solution sucks...
Lmao for real ? I technically wanna know how disabling sound can reduces lag, just show this game hasn't been tested before release
@@Adri-sh7nu You're using CPU time to play music. The GBA doesn't have an actual sound chip or anything except for GB-specific music, so you have to do all your sample mixing and everything on CPU, and disabling music gives more CPU time to the game rather than having to spend it on both the game and music that plays every frame

@@oosha2000 If those existed, Somecallmejohnny would have rage quitted at Metropolis in Sonic 2 Genesis, assuming he could tolerate the first 7 zones. I don’t even want to imagine what the half pipes and Blue Sphere would be like.

The best way to describe this game is "Sonic the Hedgehog Drunk Driving Simulator".
I was aware of weird things about this port, like conserving your horizontal momentum even after hitting a wall in the air.

After seeing this I'm glad that the Master System did their own thing instead of port the Mega Drive version
The GBA was fully capable of an accurate port (Stealth's tech demo shows this), this was probably just rushed and was based on the J2ME version (the J2ME version wasn't too bad though, idk where they screwed up with this)
Actually it may not have been based on the J2ME version (the music for sure is though) but still

@@aydenrw2719 I read that on other commentary, it sucks! But I don't doubt since Sonic Advance is good, remaster treatment would do wonders.
Regardless of how shitty this game is, it was my first Sonic game, and the only Sonic game I had besides Shadow the Hedgehog on PS2. Still have nice memories with it.
Before being a master at emulating, I had Sonic Heroes, also for PS2.
That is undoubtely the best Sonic game.

i actually really like this speedrun, it shows off how cool it can be when you pair it with the janky spindash and the strange momentum exploit. its werid how you can carry your momentum through jumps before you fully touch the ground , it feels like frame perfect but the game is so slow that it feels much more generous. either way its really cool to see one of my childhood games get brought to such highs, its actually my favorite Sonic 1 speedrun now.
How was it so hard for Sonic Team to port this to the GBA?! This should have been a classic, but instead, it's a travesty!

This was done by a separate team as Sonic Team was preoccupied with Sonic 06' whose Xbox 360 version was released the same day as this game.

If this was done on the J2ME engine as someone claimed on this comment section, then that explains a lot, specially the music aspect for me, it is weird that they even butchered that, but that's how it loads on a J2ME game, and that's a bit of how it sounds even! The physics being wrong is also explained by this.

I haven't played this port of Sonic 1 but I'm more than aware that people do not like this port at all. For me, the sound and music (mostly the sound) isn't too great. The screen is more zoomed in making it hard to see as well. What else can't people stand about this?

Ngl the music for this game didn't really impact so hard, like the Genesis versions soundtrack is so good. And the GBA soundfont makes awesome Soundtracks from a bunch of games like Pokemon emerald or Mother 3.
This game could've been a lot better if the devs had just taken their time and released the game later.

Who playtested this port? If you were going for 1:1 conversion with this, it didn't work. (40% more bugs than Genesis version)

It makes Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic Blast, Sonic 06, Sonic Forces, AND Rise of Lyric look like masterpieces

I do agreed the GBA of Sonic 1 was bad, I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some Sonic games on GBA are good such as the Sonic Advance Trilogy and those are better than Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis and now I think about it, the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 on the Mega-Drive was 100 times better than that GBA port.
