As a mechanical engineer I really appreciate your way of telling people that they don't need a big workshop and complex tools to make useful stuff at home! Keep it up!
Haxman does demonstrate that well. Of course, that is basic to "the American way" & hot rodding, which sprang from need for parts or repairs not elsewise available. I was trained to avoid waste by buying or building the best available, properly maintain to prevent breakage or premature wear, & repair, rather than throw away. Never throw away what is repairable or useful. If replacing, give it to someone who needs it. Hax got it goin' on.
You took me back 50 years man. My grandmother built one pizza oven by herself from clay, right in her yard . Given my grandpa was the kind to "I'll make it later", she took the initiative . She got a large barrel cover , and mixed clay with hay . She built walls and roof , and placed the barrel cover (cooking surface) in the middle . She made the best pita bread and Mediterranean pizzas right in her backyard . She paid nothing for the oven. OF course, my grandpa came at the end to criticize and suggest improvements. Thanks for reminding me of my grandparents.
That's my hubby.. always later, years goes by and when I decide to do it myself, all the criticism comes in. I'm watching this video because I'm tired of waiting 😂
You are some kind of genius. You have an engaging narrative style, but what blows me away even more is your willingness to experiment and make adjustments as needed based on the resources at hand and the problems encountered.
Always remember when cutting metal with a cutting disk on a grinder, the sparks will stick to glass and ruin it permanently. Avoid shooting sparks in any direction of glass windows, camera lense, etc.
Watching you adapt and overcome every little problem is a true joy to watch! Using the die to thread the handles was AAAA-maaazing!!! You a smart man der buddy!! 10/10!! Would always recommend.
I've found that a regular charcoal grill works pretty great as a pizza oven. Put a pizza stone on it and then cover with a lid. Let it sit over the coals for about 5-10 minutes and you're golden
You've just given me over here in England an idea. I don't know if you're seen what our old fashioned letter boxes look like, but I know I see a big red Pillarbox shaped pizza oven in my future.

It looked floppy and I didn't hear any crunch when you bit into it. Make me proud that I have something to contribute and char the bottom of your next pie. In my line of work, I only understand food but I'm here to learn what you engineering minds will share. I built my version of this about 5 years ago. Used threaded rod to build a rack in the upper 1/3 and put an 18" pizza stone in it. Saves tons of time/labor and never have to worry about degradation over time from the extreme heat. Favorite fuel is lump charcoal with a chunk of wood from time to time. Good stuff!
Has your steel drum held up? As hot as a fire you run in it, I wondered if the metal started burning through? I've used tons of burn barrels and they last a year or so.
You know two of the things I enjoy most about watching your videos with my daughter? It proves all Dads are goofballs and you don’t need plans and prep to build great projects😂. I am building this for sure👍
Good pizza oven. A recommendation, put some rebar in the cement slates. It will give the slate more structure. You will be putting little loads. But the slates loaded or not tend to break in the middle, more so when there are thermal changes. Thermal resistant cement, is no exception to this rule of the thumb. So when you have to change it, put a small grid of 0,4 or 0,6 rebars grill in there. The slate will come more wholesome and will not crumble easy.
All my life using a caulking gun, I didn't know you could cut the top and puncture the tube using the gun. If only for this reason, you have a new subscriber!
A minor adjustment recommendation: cut the top part open of the barrel and get an old/used 22” weber kettle lid to mimic the dome shape traditional brick oven. Mod the lid to put on an exhaust/ chimney. But first use the lid from your kettle to see if it can be a perfect fit. Would love to see how that would turns out
Your suggestion isn't bad, however, it's more about using his already open fire pit, the least items to purchase so it's as financially cheap as possible and if you note the temp he got ...a chimney allows more heat to escape. It may look more appealing in respect to other types of outdoor ovens but this works best as it is. Metal, however won't hold the heat like brick will when the fire dies. He probably could have cooked right pizzas if they were ready to go one after another without adding wood. Your idea has looks but I married a high maintenance woman and looks are not always the best choice. A barrel that hot eventually burns out but hey, it will last two or more years with fairly frequent use. Unfortunately the stupid green freaks are attacking anything wood burning as they want to be dependent on the grid and constant rate increases.
@@franksters08 No prob, I'm laughing,. divorced back iin 91, she turned into a meth head, has been with four guys since and married her drug counselor who is probably ice picking his brain.
@luckyree9 All the water heaters I've seen are very thin walled steel and more like tin foil compared to drum stee. Water heaters are usually two thin walls with insulation between.anf a waste of your time .
@ster chimney is for single chamber ovens. This is two chambers. Anywho the chimney is to let smoke out. Its already letting smoke out. Also dont need dome. Domes radiate heat inward using stone radiant heat. This one is made of steel not stone. The heat source is also from beneath in separate chamber. This is more like a grill oven than a stone pizza oven.
I didn’t read all the comments but a useful tip I find is to put a plastic bag over the magnet 🧲 broom to collect shavings…. Once done.. just remove the bag and dispose… your magnet broom stays clean
Pizza looked tasty. Just a thought, if you put a plastic bag over your magnetic sweep, you can easily remove all those metal filings by reversing it as you remove it. 😊
9:49 whaaaat??? I've been cutting my caulk with scissors or a blade for YEARS!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! nice job! i was all ready planning on the smokeless fire pit this summer. as my girlfriend is a pizza junkie, guess what else i will be building. a hint on the magnet sweeper. tape a piece of parchment paper over the bottom before sweeping. when you are done, pull off the paper and the sweeper is clean.
Just a sliver more time on the pizza to finish imo. 😊. Darker crust is just fine. Or, continue to rework dough formula. 😉. ❤️ Gets hot, looks great, love the plan rather than doing all brick \ cement. Those big drums make into fantastic cookers across the board. I put that in the video because I showed that in a previous video and several people said the same thing. You never know what little piece of info someone might find useful. 😁
First video watch, great job! I appreciate your family man aspect. Having worked in a pizza shop I agree, there is no substitute for baking on a stone. The only thing I would suggest is a stone cap inside. Same mold just spin it 180. Thanks

Hey, Did you measure temperatures in the oven during cooking? I was thinking it may be advantageous to have a concrete layer on the top of the oven too. Wait never mind. Just rewatched and saw the temp measurement.
Alright there John C. Riley Voice over pizza oven maker!! You rock dude!!! Maybe one I will attempt that and share with you!!! Thanks for going throught that and showing the world it isn't that hard to do it just jump over the hurdles as you go!

Gonna have to make one of these. I like making home made pizza and this could be a cool thing to have. Could even bring it on a camping trip and after the cooking's done, remove the oven part and sit around the camp fire.
Glad you learned from the paver pizza oven - FIRE AWAY FROM FINGERS! HAHA And put the fire on the opposite side. Fire lessons are always quickly remembered!! LOL You really do some fun projects!
Nice build. Instead of casting the shelf, a round pottery kiln shelf could be used. They cost about the same as the refractory cement and will last a much longer time as well.
Question: Are there any health issues cooking on cement surfaces? Cement contains silica that is harmful when inhaled (dust) but i'm not sure if the same applies to high temperature cooking. Good video as always!
Just recently found your channel. Really cool stuff! You’re relatable and explain things well. I just wish I could do some of these projects (or similar ones). I don’t have enough space for this kind of work nor the finances to afford the tools and materials (especially the tools). I only have a cordless drill, a set of drill bits, couple of wrenches, couple of screwdrivers and a basic circular saw. Maybe someday…
I honestly had no idea whatsoever that I wanted to build a pizza oven just like that...I do. Y'know I admit it, I watch a fair bit of random stuff on UA-cam so I think I have lofty monetizable expert opinion...if there's a trophy for best video on the Internet today THIS video is my #1 choice. (Yeah I dunno which I love most, pizza of clever Make-Do Technology...so HAXMAN, your Pizza Oven video is probably winning tomorrow & more than a few days afterwards too. Keep on keeping on man, you're nailing it!!
i thinkk you could improve this alot by putting a chimney in front over the hole where the pizza goes in. use the metal u cut out as doors to trap more heat. make it so the fire wood sits higher closer to the stone where the concrete stone is at. make a few small air vents for the fire when the door close. this would get the oven run hotter make the pizza better. you could probably put a steel plate on the concrete for crispier bottoms. idk might be wrong tho.
Just found your channel, I've watched 5 videos already. I'm not a DIY'er but I used to be. I'm crippled now, and your video's crack me up. It's not just the drugs I'm taking, it's you. Thank you for being funny and human!
If you make the metal red hot and put car oil on it, it will turn black and rust proof. After you finish with the silicon just pump out a bit more to seal the tube, next time you use it just pull out the bit you left behind.
you want more of a furnace for cooking pizza. one door at the bottom for fuel, one at the top for the oven, make it tight and a few pinholes around the bottom for a REALLY hot fire. Make the top door 1/2 of the barrel, for a BIG pizza.
I just used this same method to draw a half circle on my barn to cut a door out for my goats. I learned to do this from watching my dad do this for years when building things :-) Another Amazing Video Haxman!
I have binge watched a bunch of your videos and I love em! Love the fact you put craft and family into your pro-jects! Keep it coming! Much love from sunny (not so sunny) England!!
Nice job!! I may even try making one for us, just a tip for what it's worth - have you thought of placing a plastic bag or cloth over your magnetic broom before using it. Helps get the shavings off without sticking to the magnet.
Now this is a awesome build, why, let me tell ya. Most regular DIY have minimal powertools , unlike build your own youtube chanel s that have enough equipment to set up a factory. Epic pizza oven Prayers wishes from Cornwall UK
All i did was buy some pizza pans up to 18" for my Kettle grill. It make perfect pizza cooked . The pizza pans cook pizza better than a stone does. top to bottom in 20 min> depending on the heat> from 250 degs 20 min. up to 500 degs 10 mins the kettle also season the pizza pans. They will last for ever
I would look around on the patio b4 i would buy or build one first! Can use a smoker, or any dome grill or kettle. Then i got the ideal of using a plastic or metal drum to form the dome part. by laying concert or bricks concerted togather. That would be the top to put on the sides. If you do make one? Make one Big enough for at less a turkey! I can do a turkey in my Weber Kettle
I guess I am a very fortunate individual, since my kitchen range has an oven. Thus, I can bake pizza, as well as countless other things, without having to build an oven. HOWEVER, due to our desire to avoid indoor oven use during the summer, I have found that using a sheet pan, rather than a regular pizza pan, lets me use the gas grill to make pizza outdoors. It works great, it's fast, and quite simple.
I really enjoy how you show all the mistakes and talk bout ideas that would be a great setup but instead you go with a much simpler and least time consuming solution. Like the jigsaw... only to realize you need to change the blade 🤣😂🤣 🏌♂️🎆 This is why sometimes, I end up using a hammer 🔨 as a wrench 🔧 🤣 😂 😅 💡🤦🏾🏌♂️🎆 Opening bucket..... edit: went and got gloves
*eyeballs the 55 gallon drum sitting in my shed from an attempt to build an Ugly Drum Smoker that never got started after I caved and bought a barrel BBQ with a side smoker box* 🤔 This gives me some ideas...
It's just one of them things if you know you know if not you gotta run into someone that knows while your doing that kinda work. I can see why people wouldn't automatically just look into that hole and see the blade and stuff. Makes sense don't feel bad not a thing you'd just bring up unless you been in this situation, now you can go spread new knowledge
Well dang! this is inspirational!!! Need brand of refracted cement and paint, but mostly... yess... pizza dough recipe would be good too!! Very well done!!!

should have kept it in longer. temp was adequate for it
I honestly had no idea whatsoever that I wanted to build a pizza oven just like that...I do.
Sensational. You should make a simple door out of the piece you cut out, and see if you could bake bread in there !
G'day there, I am an Aussie watching from Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I love watching cool DIY stuff and, this indeedy does, qualify for cool DIY stuff.
I just used this same method to draw a half circle on my barn to cut a door out for my goats. I learned to do this from watching my dad do this for years when building things :-) Another Amazing Video Haxman!
😉
Thanks for the video...hope everyone has a pleasant day
I have binge watched a bunch of your videos and I love em! Love the fact you put craft and family into your pro-jects! Keep it coming! Much love from sunny (not so sunny) England!!
Thanks for coming back and posting your hacks, HAXMAN! Missed you and the fam and channel!
Nice job!! I may even try making one for us, just a tip for what it's worth - have you thought of placing a plastic bag or cloth over your magnetic broom before using it. Helps get the shavings off without sticking to the magnet.
awesome idea......this is what UTUBE is all about!...
Nice! I built an UDPO (Ugly Drum Pizza Oven) year ago when I was in Germany. Still works to this day!
You could do a vinegar mix on exterior
To give it a copper look
In addition to enjoying your video -- i had forgotten that magnetic sweeping tools existed. THANK you for the reminder. Good safety clean-up device.
Now this is a awesome build, why, let me tell ya. Most regular DIY have minimal powertools , unlike build your own youtube chanel s that have enough equipment to set up a factory. Epic pizza oven
Prayers wishes from Cornwall UK
Great idea - looks amazing!
I only wish you had a shot of the bottom of your cooked pizza to show how it cooked underneath.
a briquette box underneath would be great for people that don't have fire pits, that is awesome!
I gotta say I am howling😂😂 no joke we have literally the exact same sense of humor😂😂🤣🤣
Totally, totally so cool
I really enjoy how you show all the mistakes and talk bout ideas that would be a great setup but instead you go with a much simpler and least time consuming solution. Like the jigsaw... only to realize you need to change the blade 🤣😂🤣 🏌♂️🎆
This is why sometimes, I end up using a hammer 🔨 as a wrench 🔧 🤣 😂 😅 💡🤦🏾🏌♂️🎆
Opening bucket..... edit: went and got gloves
Kerfs go interior of the bend. Just slitting material does nothing you need the cut to remove material. Good video , i like your attitude
*eyeballs the 55 gallon drum sitting in my shed from an attempt to build an Ugly Drum Smoker that never got started after I caved and bought a barrel BBQ with a side smoker box* 🤔 This gives me some ideas...
what a great idea
All these years and I never knew there was a hole to cut the caulk tube end. Lol and yes the pizza looks great.
Lol I was kind of annoyed with myself for never knowing that myself 🤣
It's just one of them things if you know you know if not you gotta run into someone that knows while your doing that kinda work. I can see why people wouldn't automatically just look into that hole and see the blade and stuff. Makes sense don't feel bad not a thing you'd just bring up unless you been in this situation, now you can go spread new knowledge
Well dang! this is inspirational!!! Need brand of refracted cement and paint, but mostly... yess... pizza dough recipe would be good too!! Very well done!!!
I'll be trying all the stuff you do again thank you
I like to use an old 55g barrel of VP C16 for a little extra kick.
Merci beaucoup monsieur Haxman 👍😉
Love the princess bride reference when u said marriage at the beginning! Your amazing for that thank u
So around 13 minutes in. We finally get to see the one that really runs the show. Lol this was a nice looking DIY Pizza Oven.
Loved the video. Maybe you could add a door flap to make sure it keeps the heat in more and really gets a lovely top on the cheese and pepperoni.
Very good thank you
Man! You had me at “Used it to make a high flow intake for my Camaro!” Love it! Subscription sold!
That looks just like some barrels we (Military) lost off of a truck when going through Kentucky. Think they held 2-4-5 Trioxin or something.
Great vid - and PERFECT English accent!
(I’m from England) 👏👏👏
adding this to the list of things I will do when I finally get my house.
WOOOW !! FANTASTIC !!
One useful tip...You can buy pizzastones different sizes if you don't want to make that concrete one...Nice job anyhow man
This is the first video I've seen so far. I want a pizza oven...
You could even make a miniature of that and use it on a grill. I'm gonna do that! Thanks!.
