Mahogany Dresser Transformation with Dye Stain |

- For this estate sale flip, I was inspired by a design I saw on General Finishes Design Center by @BlushVintage. It was a mahogany dresser that she used a Pewter dye stain to neutralize the red. I decided to try it on this mahogany Hepplewhite dresser. I began by stripping the finish and sanding through the grits. I ran into a little trouble because the dresser was made with two different wood species and I had to use a gel stain on the other wood to blend it into the pewter stained mahogany. I love the warm brown color. What do you think?

Most definitely a scroll stopper Lisa!! Girl, I would hate to go up against you in an arm wrestle…with all the hand sanding, you must have guns for days! 😅
Aw, thanks girl! I think I’m painting my next piece 🫠
Gorgeous! And you are doing great with the patches and matching them!
Hopefully practice makes better 😬😊
Gorgeous! I love that you did not paint this classic beauty. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome! 🤩🙌🏼
Absolutely gorgeous!! So classy!! Well done!!
Aw, thanks Arlene! 🫶
Beautiful color, the mahogany now looks super high-end . It’s interesting that hardware I see a lot in fact, I just refurbished a piece with that same hardware using 320 super fine sandpaper to spruce them up and they look really vibrant. ❤ your work ❤ your channel!
I really like the color too! I wish these were brass, but the gilding wax helped 🤩
Angie at Transcend furniture gallery here on UA-cam is really good at the blending. She uses fine tip stain pens not the wax sticks. Check her out, it might help. That blending looks so hard to do.
I haven’t tried the stain pens yet 🙌🏼
I used Minwax wood stain in red mahogany on mahogany wood. It didn't come out red tint, it's a rich dark chocolate color. I put 2 coats Minwax poly sealer and it looks absolutely amazing! 💯
Awesome! I find that different woods and even different pieces of the same wood take stain so differently. It’s always an adventure since you never know what you’re gonna get. 😊
Love it! Turned out Beautiful!! Ty for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
Great job. I’m learning all the time.
Thanks! Me too!
Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Love, love, love the color! Well done
Thank you so much! 🙌🏼☺️
Ah, well…. I’m old & I do love mahogany….. I saw that other video & I also found it very creative. Yours is just as nice! ❤
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous!
Thank you!!
Wow you did an amazing job! It definitely looks beautiful and more modern now! I love it!❤❤😀
Thank you so much!! I think it’s more modern too. 🤩
Gorgeous. Great job
Many thanks 😊 🙌🏼
Gorgeous! ❤
Thank you! 😊🫶
Lovely! Thx for sharing your your experiment!
My pleasure! Thanks 😊
Appreciate all the details of the process. I just picked up a Dixie Hepplewhite dresser and chest of drawers that I’m hoping to restore, and this was very helpful. Yours turned out so beautiful!❤
You’re welcome! Good luck on yours! They are such classic pieces 🤩
I like it! Lotta work and time put into that piece. You keeping it a stained piece is proof.
Thank you very much! 😊
Looks great 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks so much! 🤩
It’s stunningly 😊
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
You always do a wonderful job!!!
Thank you so much, Kim!
Gorgeous
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I love the two tone. It’s gorgeous. The patches are as good as you can get. We’re always harder on ourselves!
Ah, so true. Thanks!
Outstanding 😊
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I have this exact dresser and it needs a makeover. Thank you for this. It looks absolutely amazing. I love the two tones ❤️
It’s such a classic style! One of my favorites 🤩🙌🏼
Your dedication is an inspiration. So very well done. I’ve inherited a lot of mahogany furniture that I have not particularly loved. If you tackle round two of a similar finish as this, would you please educate me on what stain or medium, besides paint, will considerably lighten it. I recently purchased 3 of the Lilly Moon gel stains and have yet to use. The discoveries are yet to come. I do love this piece’s final color so much more than the original color. You’ve done a spectacular work of art, and I wish I had your sanding arm. You go girl!
Thanks Mary! I have gone lighter with mahogany by doing a green paint wash and then a white wash. I’ve never used the Lilly Moon gel stains, but I bet they would work!
Lovely!
Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous! Nice to see a restore rather than painted.
Thank you very much! 🫶
You always do amazing work
Aw, thanks so much!!
You’re off to a great start with the blending sticks! Looks great!
Thanks! Someday I’ll be a pro! 😅
I love the two toned look. Great job.
Aw, thanks! 😊
Me as well. Looks very rich!
Fun-tastic .The Antiques Road Show gods will not strike if u ever 2 tone the Duncan Phyfe style mahogany
Much improved!
Agreed 🙌🏼
It turned out beautifully! It's a scroll-stopper.
Aw, thanks Debbie! 🤩
I love it.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I think this came out beautifully. I’m learning so much from watching you. I love the way you take us through each step.
Aw, thanks Karen! 🫶
Love the color,as usual you did a beautiful job. I have a dresser that is almost like it. Difference is trim around the drawers, hardware pulls are similar.
Thanks Debbie! 🙌🏼😊
Beautiful job.
Thanks Kathleen! 😊
Nice piece. I like that you show the sanding in real time.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I have not used dye stains but you are giving me courage to try a project with this type of product.
On a pretty wood grain, I’m loving them!! I think because they absorb so deeply into the wood. 😍
Good job! The different kind of woods when you are staining, is always a problem. Lots of work, but it paid off!
Thank you! I’m glad it came out in the end 🙌🏼
I love this. I am stripping an old Bassett serpentine dresser while you are working on your. Hope mine turns out half as nice as yours did!
I’m sure it will! It’s such a classic style 🙌🏼
Using a piece of scrap wood between the clamp and veneer repair provides more even clamping pressure. I love the sheen of the finished piece.😊
Thanks! Me too 🤩
That’s gorgeous! Great job. It looks incredible esp compared to the before look 👀
Aw, thank you!
Beautiful- I love that you are always trying new things! So Much Hand Sanding! Yikes! The results are worth it though!
Thanks Shannon! Yes, I was really questioning my decision about halfway through 🫣
Good rescue!
It was a beauty. Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous!! I was worried the red of the mahogany would disappear, glad it didn't! To me its not mahogany unless it has some red. ❤
Yep, wood does what wood wants to do. It would be difficult to completely get rid of the red. Some people love it and some people don’t. I like a little toned down version. 😊
That's my favorite one that you've done
It’s a good one! 🤩
Beautiful. Mahogany can be too red, but this really looks beautiful. I've seen prices all over the board on antique pieces. Really depends on what people are will to pay. Prayers you get what you are asking... Truly love how this one came out...nice soft tone.
It was a good one and I sold it on Etsy and shipped it to Oregon 🙌🏼🤩
I am also learning how to use those wax sticks. I had no idea!
It’s a learning curve, but I’m liking them!
Use stain markers to simulate grain on patches. They are similar to felt tip pens
I’ve seen those but haven’t tried them yet 🙌🏼
1948 Drexel? I have the chest of drawers! It's in better shape than the before pics, but I'm really liking this idea.
I noticed the Bernhardt Asian campaign dresser in the background while you tested stains. Love it as a living room piece!
I’m not sure of the exact year. It’s a great style. Yes, that’s one I kept for myself. 😍
Great bow front Dixie
Did you get a new sander and vac system? Love your work as always!. You have more patience than me…i’d have pulled out the lovely paint. Good job! Thanks
Yep, I did! My orbital died so it was a good excuse to upgrade. I’m loving it!! 🤩
Wow you did a ton of work and the result is beautiful! I saw that pic on the GF Design Center website a while back and was blown away…but always a little skeptical about the products/process described. Much respect to you for taking down an entire piece most would have painted! I’ve been using OSMO after watching your videos. Mine looks a little streaky. Can you tell me what rags you are using with the OSMO and where you got them?
I was a little disappointed that it turned out darker, but it’s still lovely. So much work. Now I know why I painted the other ones 🥴. For the OSMO, they actually recommend using a white non abrasive pad to apply and another one to remove the excess. I use lint free rags that you can get in a box. I’ve had some streaking too, but that’s usually because I haven’t applied enough product. Hopefully that helps.
@@ivylaneinteriors I appreciate that. I’ve been using the white non abrasive pads. Will keep working at it!
Great
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Can you do a video on how 2 use a dremel I have one and I still have not figure out how to use it and how to put the sand paper on..thxs it would help a bunch.
Sure! I need to get some more attachments and I could do a video on it 👍🏼
Hola:
Mucha suerte. Magnífico trabajo un 10.
Casi 13k😮
Ha! Yes, a new sander but I’m still learning how to use it. 🤦♀️ I think the mahogany took the dye stain really well. It’s so rich looking and a perfect right for an old money brunette 🤣
21:27 Habrá que probar con los acabados también: Las ceras o selladores y no solo con el tinte; colócale todo Ivy.
😊🙌🏼
First of all my husband had that dresser, I don’t know if was the same manufacturer but it was the same dresser when we met in 1983 and he had it as I don’t know a kid maybe, I’m not sure I just know it was a long time. Right away I liked the blue pewter because the other ones and it could’ve been just the video because I’m not there in person but anything with the green on the video it looks dirty and not very attractive. It almost like a camo color, maybe that’s why your husband liked it it was more mannish. Lol I love it I love the two-tone I thought it first it might look a little weird but again of course it’s a video, it’s just the way I see it through the video but I love it. I wouldn’t of gotten rid of the dresser that I dislike so much if it look like that. 😜 ❤️❤️❤️ Great job!
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
It turned out great! I love it! I would say price it at $800-850.00!
Thanks! I listed it for $1195. We’ll see 😬☺️
Great work! Definitely modernized with the more brown cover! You could probably get $820???
Thanks! I listed it for $1195. We’ll see 🙌🏼
Some pieces need to be left wooden and not painted. This is one of them! Great job.
Agreed! It is SO good in person 🤩
It was a great tutorial. I’m it looks better. But I like lighter woods and stains
I like them all! 🤩
Lots of work but it did turn out lovely.
Indeed! Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous!! That is A LOT of work! Hope you charge top dollar 💵
Thank you! 😊 😬😊
Can you fix the veneer scratched or scraped veneer on a piece like this?
Without refinishing? Probably not. Some scuff marks will come out with #0000 steel wool and Mohawk Oz polish, but if the finish is failing it will need a full refinish.
@@ivylaneinteriors Thank you.
I’m proud of you! You didn’t throw Ugly offensive paint on this beautiful old honey! Now you won’t be afraid to repeat this again. I think 750.00 to $800.00
Full refinishes are no joke, but I love it! 🤩 Thanks so much!!
I personally think it looks great when the stains on the different wood types don't match exactly; it gives it a lot character and looks like it was done intentionally. The only thing I don't like is the hardware; I wish it had been changed to a deeper gold, or black, and shaped like normal handles. I don't personally like the ovals at all. However, it's definitely a scroll stopper.
I’ve never been a fan of two tones finishes, but I need to learn to embrace it. ☺️🙌🏼
When you have two wood species try shellac first. You can also try toner spray. Watch johns furniture to learn techiques. She is on youtube❤
Thanks for the tips!
First of all I don't get the statues on top of books thing that you seem to LOVE. It looks weird to me. I like a nice stack of old books but with a big statue or globe on top is weird. Secondly the color is nice, the hardware is nice but the wood looks raw and rough. I don't know how it could be with all that sanding but it doesn't look finished to me. It looks like it needs a couple of layers of wax or some other type of finish?
We obviously have different styles. Maybe you should start your own channel and share your own approach to refinishing. 🙌🏼
@@ivylaneinteriors Yes we do have different styles for sure. I'm an old fart with old styles. You are probably more in touch with what is popular today. I loved refinishing old furniture so much I got into the business of refinishing woodwork and kitchen cabinets. Now I'm too old, I'm disabled and I have mobility issues plus the fact that I have no clue how to do all this high tech stuff.
It’s definitely hard on the body ☺️
😅😅😅😅😅 maravilhosa parabéns 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 abraços bom trabalho boa noite 😴😴😴😴😴.
Thank you! 😊
Since I bought card scrapers I haven't touched my scraper with the handle. And I rarely mess with chemical stripper anymore either. I scrape, scrape, gently sand. Stripper is a waste of time imo.
I haven’t tried the card scrapers yet 🙌🏼
TW: hand sanding, lots of it
I was half way in considering my life choices 🤣
Watching you stain with that wonky old brush makes me cringe. You know you can trim the brush so it's even. Have you ever considered using a sponge brush? Your staining is so uneven and sponge brush might help with that.
I never said I was an expert at this. This is a skill I’m trying to learn. 🤷♀️
@@ivylaneinteriors I'm sorry if my comments sound so negative I apologize. You do a pretty good job but if you could spend a few days with an expert refinisher you'd learn some valuable tips. I really liked using a sponge brush for applying stain because it gives it a nice even consistent coat.
I’ll try it!
Vaya con estos vídeos.hablan en inglés y encima no hay tradución lo ponen en inglés también
I try to turn subtitles on. Is it not working?
I DON'T like the green. Not sure why, but no...just no. 😒
Do you mean the other one I painted? This one was kept wood 🤔
Beautiful!
Many thanks! 😊
