Just caught a 30 pound Black Grouper with a 3oz white bucktail jig this past Sunday after viewing another one of your videos. I’m a believer!! Will definitely order some more!!
Thanks a boat for watching and sharing. This is definitely light tackle stuff, glad to hear it's right up your alley. I'm always partial to going as light as I can... Every once in a while I get tagged by a blue marlin and I kick myself for it, but that's the calculated risk I take sometimes. Regardless. Can't thank you enough for all your support of the channel and making this happen. Sincerely, I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Hi Chuck, thanks for watching more. Yes sir, when you get to Florida, make sure you get a white bucktail jig or 2, they will be the MVP of your fishing gear. Thanks again for everything. Avi gives you a virtual fist bump. Take care :)
Hi Heath. I really enjoyed this video, particularly because of your rigging technique. Love the spider hitch to no name configuration. I try to eliminate terminal tackle as much as possible, despite how easy it is to change out your lures at the snap swivel. Similar to you, I usually start my rigs with a Bimini Twist. However, I like spider hitch a lot. Seems easier to tie on the go. Can’t say enough about the white buck tail either. We’ve caught a bunch of Mahi over the last two days alone on the buck tail down in the Keys. Stay well. Jay
Hi Jay, thanks a million for watching and sharing. When I learned the spider hitch years ago, I stopped tying Bimini's, I actually this the "poor man's Bimini twist" definitely a lot easier and quicker for keeping the lines in the action. I 've used it for trolling for so long, I can't remember. It provides great shock absorbency for setting the hook. And, yes, the white bucktail is not only game changer, but it has saved many days where nothing else gets hit. Thanks again for all you do for the channel, I truly appreciate it. Hope all is well with you and the family. Tight lines & take care ;)
Great teaching! and yes.. those dual motor, radar and 60miles/hr boat can move easly 10-20 miles to find fish find birds etc.. and if none is there lets move another 40 miles !!! But from small boats is another fuel / fun / time equation... thats why I always have line in the water too captain! As always great video.. i got a couple of buck tails but Im yet to use them since Im still trusting ballyhoo rig.. will give a try next time!
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. So, sometimes if I see life, I gun for it, or I'll give it a little while depending on the conditions, but a good deal of the time I just want a line in the water.... can't catch fish without a bait in the drink, right? You definitely give them a try. Everything in the ocean eats a white bucktail... Heck, you might even give up on the bally once you see how well the jigs work. Thanks again for all your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Hi Heath, The Black Fin was waiting for you to get the jig into the water. He must have been hungry. Sometimes I added a felt trailer to my jigs. You can get a sheet of felt at Walmart's craft department for $ 1.00 per sheet. It comes in several colors. Cut strips of felt about 3/8 inch wide and as long as you want. Put a dab of glue on one end and then fold it over to get about 3/8 inch overlap. ( double thick ) Put a weight on top to keep it down. After the glue dries, take an ice pick to poke a small hole in the center of the double end, for the hook. The felt gets stronger when it gets wet. It makes a great trailer and you get about 30 trailers for $1.00. Sometimes I put a colored trailer on a white bucktail jig. It's a trick I saw on UA-cam, "Fish Your Way." The Flounder and Striper fishermen use it in NY and NJ. Say "Hi" to Avi and "The Fishing Girls." Good luck and I'll talk to you on Thursday, Mickey
Hi Mickey thanks for watching and sharing. I'll have to give that trailer trick a try. I'm always at Walmart so it's not an extra trip. Really, I think that Blackfin just wanted to be on the show and join us for dinner. Avi and the girls say "Hi Mickey" everyone here is well, and school is almost out for the summer. Hope all is well with you and your family. Thanks again for always adding some value to the channel. I can't thank you enough for all you've done over the years. Sincerely. Talk to you Thursday. Take care :)
Hi Heath, I'm glad the family's well. I bet everyone's happy that school will be done soon. Thank you for all your fishing knowledge that you share with us. Too many fishing channels just show the guys fishing and they never describe what they are doing or why. For me, fishing channels are entertaining but should have some educational content included. Hi John thanks a bazillion for watching and sharing. Yes sir, you're gonna want to give troll them a try. I rarely ever use them as bottom fishing jigs. Decades ago when I started trolling them and got into the bite... I was amazed... I haven't looked back since. I've pretty much caught every type of fish in our local waters on these jigs. My favorite size is the 3/4 ounce. Good luck in your fishing adventures... May fish Fear You. Thanks again for all your support, sincerely, couldn't get this done without you. Hi Keith Ive watched a gazillion YT videos about lures/fishing and yours are the best. BUT ... I troll from a cruising sailboat (Florida waters) and it's catch whatever bites. Almost all power boat captains troll at 6-8 knots or more and that is super fast for a sailboat. Often is shallower water. Would be GREAT if you could do a video of best lures and trolling rigs for us slow speed rag baggers!!
Slowing trolling from a sailboat works the same as with the faster trolling on a motorboat. Difference is, you can't really planer troll at that low speed. At the slower pace you should consider trolling fresh baits Like ballyhoo, mullet or squid.
I am a huge fan sir I'm all the way from the Philippines and I was enjoying every content while learning, I specially enjoyed the slow pitch jigging methods and tricks you though me, I just hope someone can give me a solid slow pitch gear set so that i could catch more
Heath, great info as always big fan of the spro jig and the channel. Ive been tying these to my main line just using a clinch knot and trolling them that way and just got sooo many line twists. Does the spider hitch and no name take the line twists out? Ive been thinking of using a swivel but wanted to keep the tackle stream lined. Because of the line twists Ive just been using my spro bucks as a caster on weed patches.
Thanks a million for watching and sharing. Honestly, I would stay away from swivels... But if you're consistently getting line twist, It's probably in your best interest to try it. I hit weed patches with the bucktails all the time.... I always have one locked and loaded.... when I troll by if I see mahi, I'll pitch it to them and try to get hooked up before the trolling rigs swoop by the patch. Everything eats a white bucktail jig. Line twist occurs on spinners, because you're always, well, spinning the line (no pun intended) especially when you have pressure from a fish on the other end.... If the twist is super bad, you might want to consider re-spooling. Thanks again for all your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight liens & take care ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing A little trick I use for line twist. Since it’s probably a good habit to re-ty. I let out about 150 to 200 ft of line with nothing tied to it. Let it troll a few minutes then reel it in. The drag from the water will untwist the line. I bet the Professor knew that. Or the “Old dog” taught the young Pup a new trick! Great stuff Heath. Keep at it.
Great content heath … your material is spot on. Heath why this combination of a spider knot/no name knot vs just tying an Alberto knot or FG knot directly from leader to braid? A couple of other quick questions sir: do you ever put a Bonita strip on the jig head? It just looks like it needs something extra lol. Lastly can you tell me what’s your best way of bleeding a tuna? Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. I use spider hitch to no-name on mono to fluoro, when it comes to braid to fluoro I'll use an alberto knot. I stay away from the FG, too much for too little. Next, the jig doesn't need any bait on it, I've caught more fish throughout my life on a plain white bucktail than anything else (bait or lure). Lastly, to bleed tuna, I reach under the gill plate and yank out as gills as I can, these are just like jugular veins and the fish will bleed out quickly. Hope all this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Hi Heath. I was just viewing this video and agree that the white jig is a great jig to have in the fishing arsenal but, I was a little confused as to not have some type of barrel swivel on the business end of things. Wouldn't the line after trolling get so twisted up that you will have to spend a very long time untwisting it? I normally have a barrel swivel on it. Thank you for posting and providing lots of details. It is appreciated.
No swivel needed. Jig trolls straight as an arrow. I ha e loads of videos trolling with it. The only lures I troll that spin erratically are Clark & drone spoons. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching
Thanks a million for watching. Nope. I never add anything to it. Here's a couple more vids that show how well it works: Key largo Giant Mutton Snapper ua-cam.com/video/2LwTscSWnYo/v-deo.html Sight fishing Mahi with bucktail Jigs ua-cam.com/video/1-YpaXAEd6E/v-deo.html Sailfish on Bucktail jig ua-cam.com/video/dNvMoQ8DR5A/v-deo.html Enjoy... and good luck on your trip down here ;)
My go to bucktail jigs sizes are 3/4 & 1/2 ounce. I never go bigger than one ounce. When you're trolling they won't dive down much more than 12 inches below the surface
Tried this for the first time today up shallow in boca. Something hit it really hard and cut me off. Not sure if it was a cuda or king but now I have to go buy more…

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I use jigs that range in sizes from 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce.... my favorite "go to" size is the 3/4 ounce. Hope this helps. Thanks again for all your support of the channel. Couldn't get this done without you. Sincerely. Tight lines & take care ;)
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. A top shot is a long leader that you put at the end of your braided line that provides for shock absorbency so that you don't yank the hook out of the fish's mouth when it strikes. When you're using braid you want at least a 50 ft top shot or shock cord the names are interchangeable but it's essentially just a leader when I'm using 20 lb for 12 lb braid I use 20 lb fluorocarbon leader as my entire top shot. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Personally I go with the 3/4 ounce bucktails for trolling. However, if you've already got the 1.5 definitely give it a try. I e never fished with a 9 foot rod, but I'm sure it will do the job. Should give you some good shock absorbency due to the extra length. Troll at about 5 - 6 mph. Should pick up tuna maybe mahi.
I haven't had any success with those sizes for the tactics I apply them to. The largest I go is 1 oz, but that's last resort. My favorite size is 3/4, gets the most strikes.

Great videos man…question, can you run 20 lb mono straight to the bucktail? Why the leader? I’m not the best at knots.. thank you
Yep you can do that. And just tie it on with a basic clinch knot.
Thanks mate Awesome
Heath a great video. Do you ever add a tail or grub to bucktail?
Thanks a million for watching. Nope. I never add anything to it.
Here's a couple more vids that show how well it works:

Yup answered my question on the video but do you ever use heavier jigs like 2-3 oz?
My go to bucktail jigs sizes are 3/4 & 1/2 ounce. I never go bigger than one ounce. When you're trolling they won't dive down much more than 12 inches below the surface
Tried this for the first time today up shallow in boca. Something hit it really hard and cut me off. Not sure if it was a cuda or king but now I have to go buy more…
Buy a few.... they will get tore up
How you think Stripers in the Mid-Atlantic would like it?
Check out John Skinner channel, he does exactly that. I like Heath’s rig though a lot.
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question... Hank Wright hit the nail on the head.... Yes they will catch stripers... Big ones too. John Skinner is definitely a good watch for more info on that. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Quality content, do you have an Instagram? Also, I recently got some of these jigs and plan to use them if I ever get out to Florida
Hi Alex, thanks for watching and always being here. I can't thank you enough for all of your support. No, I don't have instagram... I have no other social media other than this YT channel, which I try to treat more like a Bi-weekly TV show, more than Videos/content. The white bucktail jigs work everywhere... I wouldn't wait for Florida. Get some and fish them.... You'll see how well they work. Thanks again for everything. Tight lines & take care ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing haha it should be on fox sun every Sunday! Tight lines
Heath, what size weight buck tails are you using.
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Great, thanks for getting back to me.
What’s a top shot? Also you got a new subscriber
I really injoy this video great tutorial....how heavy the jigs you used? In grams...
Bucktail jigs I use are 14 and 21 grams
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thank you
I want to drag some 1.5 oz bucktail with a Penn 9 foot medium hevy rod and a Shimano Spheros 6000 40 reel and an 80 leader, what can you tell me... 😊
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thank you very much for answering me friend
hello can you add a strip of bait to it???
If you want to... of course. Personally I don't and I catch a ton of fish with it
And that knot is a ''Wilkins knot''
What is your opinion on 2oz and 4oz bucktails?
I haven't had any success with those sizes for the tactics I apply them to. The largest I go is 1 oz, but that's last resort. My favorite size is 3/4, gets the most strikes.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing OK thanks for the info.
What ounce jig do you recommend for trolling?
1/2 or 3/4 ounce is what I use ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thanks brother! You’re videos are so informative and really help . I’ve been inshore fishing all my life and just now switching over to offshore and wow is it different. Much more fun !
How far back in the spread do you fish a jig?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a good great question. Typically I let these back about 100 to 150 feet. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel.. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I get the stealth, but no swivel? I fish old Japanese feathers with swivel
Thanks for asking another great question. I don't use swivels because the jigs doesn't spin like a spoon. It trolls and jigs straight. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing so no line twist at higher speeds. I fish mojos and bucktails at low speed deep
@@vitofish961 none. jig trolls straight. the proof is in the video. There's no magic, or misleading info here. Hope this helps... I promise you, from me, what you see is what you get. Tight lines ;)
Cool didn't know 20lbs is all you need
In times when Y.T.fishermen only show their ''catch '' you show the rigging, troll speed and sometimes "location ''...and the "catch "!a like and a subscribe follows.
casting buck' tails for snook from Belize, mejico, cuba in me way to Florida never trolled one!guess what?...
