Wow, did I ever learn a lot from that that episode! Especially the marlin/wahoo section. I’m sure that you’d have to have heavy duty fishing rods and reels to troll that fast with all the weight of the lures!
Thanks for watching and leaving some great feedback. Yes, for Marlin & Wahoo, I use a Penn International 30TW spooled with 50 lb test mono. It's on a 5'6" bent butt rod. Very informative thanks. Also teaching us to use waay cheaper lures than most channels, who promote the expensive stuff you buy ready made.
Also your leaders are much lighter than what Im used to in South Africa ( my home), where we use 150lbs leader on 30lbs gear for example. It impedes the action

Fish don't understand the concept of fishing line, but they have evolved to know when something doesn't look right. Also, the lures I show in these episodes, are what I have used for years. I am not wealthy by any means, so I have to fish on a budget and be smart about my selections, in order to get the most productive outcome. Thanks again for your support of the channel. Its winter now in South Africa, we now target Queen Mackerel ( looks like Spanish M), all kinds of Tuna - quite far out, and bigger bottomfish. In summer the mahi, sailfish, tuna, marlin are around. Will try these lures in summertime. The king mackerel and Wahoo are also around now

Hi heath, instead of Treble hooks un the deep diver, you can use inline hooks for lures, great video 😃🎉

My favorite lures are the Billy bait turbo slammer in The color pearl blue and white bucktail jigs from SPRO.
Hi Heath, That was a really good video on the different trolling lures. I use the white bucktail jigs for flounder, blue fish and striped bass. They can be cast from shore and worked close to the bottom. A trailer makes them swim along the bottom. If you add a Gulp swimming mullet as a trailer, they are great for flounder. Since I don't have a boat, I don't use the other lures. I wish I lived in Florida !!!! Stay safe and good luck, Mickey
Hi Mickey, thanks for watching. Those bucktail jigs are the most useful and versatile things around. That's why I have a rod with one on it all the time. I've never tried the Gulp products. Guess I'm gonna have to give them a try. Our weather has been nasty for about 3 weeks straight now. I'm itching to get back out fishing. Hope all is well with the family. Take care :)
Hi Heath, Hope you're all well. The Gulp works good on species that are enticed by scent. Some predators don't take the time to smell the prey, they just attach. Flounder will follow a bait for up to two minutes before they bite. There are several videos on UA-cam of flounder following a bait. The scent works while they follow and usually get a strike. When I'm out going for tilefish in 500 feet of water i catch tiny flounder that are the size of my hand

Great job Heath, your series of vids are tremendously informative and practical. Being a novice at saltwater, I wonder how far behind the boat do you troll your lures? I know speed and weight are factors, but let's say the 1 oz. bucktail at 6 knots, as an example.
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback and asking a good question. When it comes to distance behind a boat it's not too complicated. If you're over shallow reefs like I'm currently showcasing fishing down in the keys you'll want to let your line out about 50 to 75 ft. If you're out deeper over to deeper ledges of The reef in about a hundred feet or so and even deeper out into the stream where I can get up to over a thousand feet you want to let that line out about 150 to 250 ft. If you're running multiple lines you'll want to scatter them at different distances so when you make turns or fish strike they won't cross over each other. And rule number one is if you ever get a fish hit make sure you reel in the shorter of the two lines or how many ever you are trolling. This will keep you from getting tangled. Hi Heath, another great informative episode. Just wondering about the connection between the wire leader and your main line. Is it attached wth a swivel and the haywire twist and the mainline has a snap swivel? Thanks again.
Hi Rick, thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. For trolling, my main line pretty much always has a snap swivel. I will connect it to wire leader, with just the loop of a haywire twist or the loop that has been crimped by cable. If I have a mono or fluoro leader, I will use a barrel swivel on the leader up 60 lb test, then I make a crimped loop. Hope this helps. Very informative videos! One question i have is, can you set up a cluple of small king busters as teasers if your using the rapala top water or deep diver lure? Or would you ruin the way the lure swims?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I don't really have an answer for that. I've never reall though about it, but I'm sure it would work just. The power of the rapala lures design should overcome any resistance created from smaller teasers like dusters... I use my deep diving Rapala magnum for high speed trolling for wahoo, so I don't add anything to it. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer, but it's worth a try if you believe it'll work. Thanks a boat load for watching and asking a great question. No leader required unless you are using braid... Or going foe toothy critters... It's all topical to what you are targeting... Personally, I have never used leader... Just hooked it to my main line ... The lure I showed in the video is almost 10 years old... Those treble hooks take a lot of the fight out of fish. Heath...great video! Especially for someone just getting into trolling. I am over in St. Pete and looking to start with topwater and deep divig plugs before attempting planar. I'll probably be trolling the TB shipping channel and the reefs out about 8-10 miles. My question is with the rigging on the Nomad/Rapala lures. I have braid mainline with 40lb mono top shot. What would you recommend from the top shot to the lure? And should I use a snap swivel on the top shot? Thanks in advance!
Your 40 lb top shot is good. I'd probably go with about 12 to 18 inches of 40 lb wire leader... you got mackerel out there. You can use either a swivel or tie it directly on with an Albright knot.

Question: Have you tried casting and retrieving the squid skirts if top water predators are observed feeding (like the Jack Crevalle or Mahi Mahi etc.)? Or, are these predominantly recommended used for trolling? Here in Trinidad, fishermen have set out some FADS (Fish Attracting Devices) and currently the Mahi are in the waters and tend to hang around these structures to feed on the bait fish. Normally we use Bucktail jigs and they are VERY EFFECTIVE...just wanted to know if you have had luck catching the Mahi using the squid skirts as a cast and retrieve lure. Thank you again for your response in advance.
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I have a funny story about casting out of squirt squid to prove that yes what you are asking is a viable question. Years ago when I was a teenager we were in a school of dolphin and a big 50 lb plus bull dolphin came up. The first thing it did was it ate one of the schoolies that was on our line. So I grabbed a big spinning reel and tossed out a little squirt squid and when I was retrieving it hit. That's the biggest dolphin I've ever caught in my life and it hit a squirt squid that was being retrieved just like you're asking. So yes it does work just toss it out and wind it in as fast as you can and they will hit it. Glad I could share this story with you. Love the channel. You mention you use your main line to the rapala... we're gonna start pulling one (or nomad) in our spread for a deep lure. We use a lot of hi viz line. Do u think that hurts when going straight to the plug? Or any lure for that matter) I like hi viz but always worry about fish spooking unless I use a long mono or floro leader.
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I tend to stay away from high vis line, unless I'm kite fishing. High vis line is also great for trolling, but like you mentioned you're gonna want a good 25 to 50 foot leader on top of it. Not sure if fish can see it or not, but speaking from experience, I'd use a leader. Also, I'd go with the nomad lures... Rapala magnum x-raps are great, but nomads seem to work better for me. Also, I'd use a about a 10 foot leader of 150 pound test leader on it... if a king or wahoo hit it your gonna need that extra meat on your lure. Hope this helps. Yup. I dont put a trailer on my trolling skirts and have zero issues catching fish. They hit it no matter what.

Hello, you seem to use a 40lbs test monofilament of around 6 to 8 inch from the lure. But what do you recommend for the rest of the line? Thanks for the vids
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Most of my main line that I fish with, is 20 pound test mono. For planer trolling I use 80 pound braid as a main line. And for the bigger high speed trolling lures, my reels are either spooled with 30 or 50 pound test mono. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;))))

The Yozuri bonita weighs 300 grams, so it's heavy enough to stay just below the surface of the water, even when trolled at high speeds like 18 knots for wahoo. You don't need any weight for it. I enjoy your videos and appreciate the lessons. I am a sailor and want to troll from my sailboat. Dolphin and tuna is what I want to catch. What is best set up for me? 3-5 knots are my avg speeds.
For something simple I'd get medium size trolling gear 15-30 pound class. Spool it with 20 pound mono, using 40 pound leader and a Billy bait mini turbo slammer as a lure. Dragging this behind the boat at that speed is sure to find the fish for you.

Heath, at the 7:44 mark of the video you can see the barrel swivel directly connected to the first hook. I'm new to this, why isn't it directly tied to the hook there, what is the benefit? Also what size/pound barrel swivel are you recommending? thanks in advance!
I use size 7 barrel swivel. It adds length to the hooks so they hang out just beyond the tail of the lure. That's where predator fish strike to disable prey. Good luck in your fishing journeys
when you make those tandem hooks on your squids and skirts do you just simply run the hook through the eye of the second hook/ thanks
Yes... but you have to open the eye of the leader hook and close it.

When your trolling with skirts like the squid how do you keep it in the water? Mine wants to skip on top.
It's gonna periodically skip out of the water then it'll dive down just below the surface. If you don't like the skipping action, let it out further and that'll tame it more

I'll move up to 50 pound test mono for high speed trolling. And finally, I use 80 pound test braid for planer trolling. Thanks a million for watching and asking some great questions. Yes, the bonita is the large size (8-1/4") I like the bigger ones, they troll better and have better action at high speeds. All of my leaders for high speed trolling are 3 to 4 feet of 270 pound multi-strand cable. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care ;)
10:04 can you troll that plane without having attach to it? Can you troll 5 oz Bucktail? With such a weight, will it keep the Bucktail down?
Yes that's a Billy bait mini turbo slammer, trolls perfectly fine e without any additional weight. Personally I don't use bucktail jigs any larger than 1 ounce

Always worth a try... I've had them get hit on both the wind up, and when the boat is in idle.

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I've caught way more on the Billy Bait Mini Turbo Slammer than on the Ilanders. The color Pearl Blue works best for me. How much weight do you use with your 4.5 inch trolling squid?
