I like them both. But "Promises, Promises" is definitely my favorite of the two. In fact, there are a few other Naked Eyes originals that rank higher in my book than "Always Something There To Remind Me." Although all of their material is great!
First time, I've heard this song in over 40+years. You could play that song right now, and it would be a top ten hit! And no one would know the difference. Just a badass song.
This is one of those songs where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So much goodness and subtlety going on that makes it a bonafide and timeless ear worm.
Was in Europe in the 80s, when this song hit the air waves. Sounded good then--sounds just as now, in 2024. I always say that the 70s was my decade for the music that I loved, but the 80s had its share of great reminiscing and thinking you're on top of the world music. Promises-Promises was definitely one of them.
While "Always Something..." was indeed a cover song, it may interest you to know that Burt Bacharach (RIP), it's composer, considered it his favorite version of all its iterations.
This is a VERY underrated song. This is a quintessential 80s song. This is one of the many key songs that defined the era we've come to know as the 80s. . . . What an era it was. I miss it so much.
Agree with you with one difference. The album version is IMHO, better than the single version which is used in this video -- better intro, some lyrical differences and most of all, _longer._
Also a big MTV hit in 1983 a great year for music. Bought this 45 around the second week in was in the top 40 and still have it. Their keyboardist Rob Fisher died in 1999 age 39 (stomach ailment) so sad.

Original second verse and chorus words before they were changed for this version: Second time around, I'm done retrieving, I'm losing my ground. This time around, there's no relief (belief?) in what you wanted you found. Now you're saying you and me are not your style or cup of tea.
Thanks for posting the lyrics to one of my favorite songs of the eighties. Another one with a similar message is Taken In by Mike and The Mechanics. Very jazzy. Most remember The Living Years but Taken In has a special place in my heart for songs about fools. Everybody Plays the Fool sometime. That one's from the seventies. Then there's Promises, Promises by Dionne Warwick from the sixties. Totally different song but just as good. Written by Burt Bacharach RIP. Who also wrote There's Always Something There to Remind Me. So full circle.

Trusted too true
In the beginning

Arm in arm we laughed like kids
At all the silly things we did
You made me promises promises
Knowing I'd believe

You knew you'd never keep
Second time around
I'm still believing words that you said
You said you'd always be here
"In love forever"
Still repeats in my head
You can't finish what you start
If this is love it breaks my heart
You made me promises promises
You knew you'd never keep
Promises promises
Why do I believe
Arm in arm we laughed like kids
At all the silly things we did
You can't finish what you start
If this is love it breaks my heart
You made me promises promises
You knew you'd never keep

Why do I believe
