  • What can be said about the Honda Gold Wing? Introduced at the 1974 INTERMOT motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany, it has been the yardstick for all touring motorcycles since. Before I ever smelled the glorious mix of gas and oil going into my first trail bike, the Honda Goldwing was a household name. Whether you were a regular on two wheels, or a contestant on Jeopardy, “what is Honda Gold Wing?” would have been common knowledge for the average Joe.
    Fast forward over 40 years and a lowly D.C. based motovlogger gets to swing a leg over his first (certainly not last), Gold Wing. The 2018 Honda Gold Wing Tour DCT leaves literally nothing to be desired. Boasting a 1833cc horizontally opposed 6-cylinder, producing just under 98 horsepower and a staggering 108 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheel, the 833 lb frame is propelled without pause. Standing at a very rider friendly 29.3 inches, the seat height lends itself to all shapes and sizes, but hey, you can read the specs in the brochure. What you came for is the first hand, first ride review and impression.

    I just did the world's first 2018 GL1800 reverse trike conversion and this has to be the nicest motorcycle ever built. It's a joy to ride and the DCT is awesome. It's about time motorcycle stepped up to automatics which have been on cars and trucks since the 50's. Great job on the review one of the best I have seen.

    Sold my 1995 GL1500A (20th Anniversary) with 110,000 miles on it and still going strong. I had been waiting for a "real" change to the Goldwing. 2018 was the change I wanted to see. I've been waiting a year to see if there where any chnages on the 2019 Tour, found out there were none and I've got mine ordered. Should receive in about a week. I went with the airbag and picked up 3k of goodies to add to it. I'm really looking forward to getting it!

    I rode the 2019 , Honda Goldwing DCT for 48 miles round trip on a straight highway road, and my ankles were starting to really feeling uncomfortable. I then put my heels on the foot pegs to try eliminate the discomfort with my ankles. I then tried putting the front end of my boots on the foot pegs and this made no difference in the discomfort. I think Kuryaykn makes fold out highway pegs that bolt onto the valve covers. I would have to have these if I bought a 2019 , Goldwing. I absolutely LOVED the power of the DCT model in ' Sport mode ' and The sound of the exhaust sounded just right too when I wound out the gears hard! At cruising speeds the exhaust sound was really pleasant. Roll on power for passing was outstanding!

    I got to test ride one today (DCT). Definitely the smoothest ride I have ever experienced. Watching the front suspension work was pretty cool. Absolutely nothing bad about this bike. However, the thing I look for in every bike is pure fun factor but this bike was like riding a sewing machine....very soulless to me. Again, amazing machine but it was like driving a Honda Car on 2 wheels. I own an HD Road Glide Special and I am no Harley fan buy but the RGS has so much soul, unbelievable torque and with my Russell Daylong it is even more comfortable than the GW. I can totally understand why some people will love this bike but it just does not tick that box that puts the ride smile on your face.

Secondly, you also said that this bike has airbag(s) built into it, I know that cars have theirs in the steering wheel, and other locations, but since I am ot a motorcycle rider, Dont have a clue where the airbag(s) would be located on a bike...LOL

    If you're young and can't afford a garage, you can't afford $30k for a motorcycle! The top case should have been big enough to fit two large full-sized helmets. And the panniers should be top-opening. Personally I'd have preferred a fully digital dashboard, but otherwise hard to fault.

    Comments about the bike are spot on. To say it's comfortable, smooth, and incredibly balanced isn't strong enough imo; the term "magic" works for me.
    Beyond this, though, I think your youth and inexperience are showing. For example how do you KNOW it's more reliable or less maintenance than the K1600 GTL. Difference between what you know and what you think. If you were speaking statistically then maybe you're right, but you should qualify statements like that. I mean c'mon, we're all capable of making guesses.
    After 45,000 miles on my F6B Goldwing I blew the transmission TWICE. I still love the Goldwing but it just may not be up for my riding style. I now have 9,000 miles on a K1600 GTL which has been rock solid. So for me personally, the K1600 may turn out to be more reliable.
    And the storage capacity. Yes 50L is the topcase only... which is reduced considerably from the previous generation's 61L. Two full face helmets will no longer fit into the top case. This is a HUGE deal! Couples tour cross-country on these bikes. Two riders equals two helmets. When the side cases are filled with luggage, where is the 2nd helmet supposed to go? Yeah I just paid $30k for the ultimate touring bike but I gotta carry my helmet around or leave it out in the elements.
    Lastly the fuel capacity. Don't be afraid to call out the negatives! Otherwise your reviews are just manufacturer mouth pieces. 5.5 gallons?!?!? Good luck getting 45 mpg two-up and fully loaded. More likely high-30 mpg's which means BARELY 200 mile range if you don't run the tank down to fumes. The reduced fuel capacity and less storage compared to the previous gen bike are huge fails and need to be called out.
    As *tremendous* as the Goldwing is, however, people will learn to manage those shortcomings and buy the bike anyway... but it's good information to help people make buying decisions. (and don't call me a CONSUMER :-) (an ugly word propagated by corporate types who think it sounds professional but it carries a cold, distant, and selfish connotation) (I'd rather be a customer or client)

    • @DukeOfDC

      Well someone ate their wheaties this morning haha.
      I love the information here, and I can tell you knowingly that my subscribers will very much appreciate hearing from someone who has in fact owned a very long term Honda Goldwing and has now switched to the BMW, so thank you for that.
      I only get so long with these motorcycles (about 2 hours, max) and in that time I do my best to call out the positives and the negatives, and trust me... when there are negatives, I don't hold back. I was truly surprised when I rode the Goldwing, and although it may have some shortcomings that wouldn't be seen until a mid-long term ownership review, as an initial test ride, it blew my socks off.
      Regardless, thanks for watching and safe riding out there!

      I test rode a 1600 Grand Tour BMW and the 2018 Goldwing. There was no comparison. The Goldwing was way more comfortable. What do I mean by that? The sitting position was a lot better on the Goldwing and my hips on the Goldwing weren’t cramping up like on the BMW. The other thing was that the shifter on the left side is too close to the foot peg. The day I did the test drive I had my sneakers on instead of my boots and my left shin got all tore up. I just like the Goldwing better. I currently have a 17 Road Glide Ultra that I am trading in for the Goldwing. There was no comparison to the smoothness compared to that bike. The Goldwing was superior. Wait until you get a service on that BMW and that is where you will pay the price for having a BMW. In the end you should drive what you like. The review was on the Goldwing was very professional compared to other vid bloggers out there.

      @user-cx2bk6pm2f 5 років тому

      @@stevesalins7561 Congrats Steve! Many safe miles on your new bike.
      I think what you said are the most common critiques of the K1600. The riding position seems to fit some riders but not others. I'm sure you're aware that BMW offers different seat heights... from 29.5 to about 32 inches to help this. For the footpegs, however, I'm not aware of any "fix" for that; it's just in the wrong position when stopped and your feet are on the ground. The pegs feel like they interfere with my legs but for me, for my specific situation and preferences, I chose to live with this annoyance and I'm still very happy with the bike overall.
      As for BMW service costs... I can't say one way or the other since I've done my own service up to this point. Valve clearance checks for the K1600 are scheduled at 18,000 miles, which I'll have the dealer do, so I'll get ready to pucker up for that lol. My previous Goldwing scheduled this at 36,000 miles and it was nice having that longer interval.

    • @NeilLauinger
      @NeilLauinger 4 роки тому

      DCT is duel clutch transmission. You dont use a clutch to change gears it occurs automatically or you can shift using paddles on the left handlebar so all models have a form of a clutch. You can also get this with a typical clutch and foot shifter. No way you can shift as fast as the DCT can...and if you live in or drive through large city's the DCT model is a blessing so you don't have to wear out your clutch hand.

    *I gave up after 4-mins of non-stop 'endorsement' of a dealer...I just wanted to know more about the 'Wing' & I'm hearing so little it's pointless to watch & listen*

    • @DukeOfDC
      @DukeOfDC  5 років тому

      Endorsing the dealership is one of the only ways I get on these bikes though. They loan them to me. I’ll try and reduce the amount of time spent talking about them in the future, sorry!

    • @gerrynightingale9045
      @gerrynightingale9045 5 років тому

      *I understand the need to give 'endorsements' and yet there must be balance involved in doing it without sacrificing actual content that's relevant to the 'Posting'...the 'Wing' itself* (considering how completely radical this machine is...I think I could easily use two-hours just going over the 'Pros & Cons' of owning one!)

    Hey I can come home at night and not have the neighbors bitching about there 3 week old baby being woke up lol. Why cant all motercycles be this quite? Like what is it about the sound that motercycle riders like? The honda goldwing would probably be the only motercycle id ride, its like 90% of motercycle riders loose brain cells when they hit the road....seen a driving a Harley tried passing a semi by going inbetween him and the one beside him....well long story short, he's then enough to stand behind a barbed wire fence post lol.
