I’m from just north of the border in Canada, our oilfield was also booming around the same time, many of the companies ran in both the US and Canada. We also experienced somewhat of an increase in drug and crime around this time, but I can truly say that it wasn’t near what it was in some of the US towns/cities, this case being an example. It’s sad to acknowledge that something which was so good for the area economically at the time has caused the lasting damage that it has. After the crash, there’s whole floors of apartment buildings empty, that’s how much of an impact the oil industry had, there’s still high unemployment, drug use and crime happening as a result of this time period.
Its hilarious when a big guy with tatts starts crying cos he did the crime but can't do the time.😆 Congratulations on 1 million subs Mike! Much deserved👏💚

One of my young workers went to the oil field to make the big money. A year later they found his body in a ditch by the highway with his wallet missing. Left behind a young wife and two-year-old daughter. Where there’s big money, there’s always vultures…
Yeah, I knew someone who went to ND to work in the oil industry; they ate that sensitive guy alive; he returned home to Detroit and killed himself. I mean, Detroit so hard-hit for jobs since the car industry moved out; he thought he would go and try to find his niche . . .
@@NoBootyBeauty no, he was a bright eyed talented young man eager to work hard in exchange for a higher standard of living for his family. By vultures I mean opportunistic immoral people who don’t care whom they hurt or steal from, instead of exchanging goods and services in the free market.
Same thing happened in Odessa TX. People came to work the oil boom, cost of living soared. Then it tanked and all these people were stranded there with no jobs and no money. They started getting desperate and the crime rate became so bad, you had to be careful just getting gas, someone would try to rob you...
@@nateknowles1426 Very, very true. I know three or so of them that moved and now live in ND doing the oil field gig. Lifted and soaped up trucks, atvs, backward hats with expensive sunglasses and famous t shirts. Magically bulked up like crazy after high school and leaving to the oil fields. They were the raging douchebags from our area. Now all conjugating in poor ole ND. James looks fits them to a tee.
Being from and in ND, you are hilarious. I can’t believe how many personal details covered in snark about these small towns you cover. Playing old western music for our barren wasteland, for example 🤪 you are awesome at what you so. Also, ND was pretty terrible during this boom, it’s gotten better but it’s not the same place I safely grew up in.

@@ghostytoasty2896 I'm sorry. I can't take on a mentality stupid enough to misunderstand my comment. And, sadly, I don't expect you to be able to make your understanding of this series of comments explicit.
They don’t cry because they’re sorry- sometimes it’s just fake, but it’s usually them crying out of self pity because they’re getting punished and losing their freedom.
This has always been a fascinating case for me. When this story first broke I was working in ND, had met Doug, i knew one of the arresting officers of James, and had another friend who worked at the pen where James was held. People that knew him definitely knew he was off. Very short temper and the whole town knew he was roided up. The story didn’t stop where mike said it did though. In 2018, another company James was an investor in had serious legal trouble and others were charged in connection to the embezzlement.
My dad always said he had a SERIOUSLY short temper. He had seen James fly off the handle a number of times and I remember he went to do laundry at a local laundromat and found a flyer hanging accusing James and Sarah "the ken and Barbie of the oil field" of being involved in some sketchy stuff. He called my mom that night to ask her if he should quit his job. I never knew my dad to fear another person.
Tex Hall is my uncle. I’m from North Dakota, my family owns multiple oil companies. This entire story is sad and tragic. I pray for the family who lost their loved one and for the people this man has murdered. Never met James.
I would love to see an episode about MMIW (missing and murdered indigenous women) surrounding oil fields in the dakotas. I'm not sure how easy that would be to document, but it would help to shed some light on something that is currently happening.
I’m Blackfoot and I believe our women are being taken as “novelty” sex slaves. And the rest are dying at the hands of our men and are being buried deep in the reservations. Tribal police are probably involved in coverups. Being a sovereign nation works against us in that way.
How many indigenous women have going missing or were murdered? Have any been found? I feel sad about this because it's the first I've heard of it. I think Mike did a video on the Highway of Tears, but later removed it as he wanted to re-create the video with more in depth information. Which I am curious to see ... Discrimination is a part of U.S. history: to discriminate against those that are different. Native American/Indian Tribes murdered and forced out of their homes and onto reservations. African American/Black people taken from their homes and forced into slavery. Japanese American forcibly removed from their homes and imprisoned in concentration camps... And it's happening to this day 😞
it's not about race as much as it is about who majorly populates areas, in my area black and white women are snatched up so often cops barely even bother most of the time unless you persist and get the media involved. police drag their heels for just about everything and treat everyone with equal amount of disinterest.
"Fear the Greeks when they bring gifts" This saying is so true to life even today. Never trust someone being nice to you and offering you free gifts or services, because you are being fattened up for the kill.
@@ontologicallysteve7765 That's what women have to do when meeting a guy they matched with online for the first time, or when a stranger approaches us when we're alone. If anything happens to us, _we're_ the first ones who get blamed for it, and yet men constantly get super offended if we're standoffish towards them in these situations. They go "why are you afraid of me, you think I'm gonna kidnap you or something? I was just trying to HELP you, you ungrateful witch". Unsurprisingly, the men who DO get offended by this are largely the same ones who blame women for being assaulted, saying we are "asking for it". Heads you win, tails I lose. And before someone inevitably comes along and says it, no, obviously not all guys are dangerous. Cmon, we all know that. But we have no choice but to assume any random stranger we cross paths with is, for reasons I hope are obvious. I know it sucks, but your mild annoyance at being prejudged is a very, _very_ small price to pay, considering what's at stake.
Interesting. As a Greek I know this saying but it is like this: Be afraid of Danaans (a Greek tribe in the city of Argos) when they bring gifts [Φοβού τους Δαναούς και δώρα φέροντας] Didn't know until now that the international translation was for Greeks in general. Thanks.
Glad to finally be watching these as they are released. Found this channel and proceeded to binge watch every episode over a several day period. Love the content and the wit. I literally loud out loud at least once per episode. Keep up the great work.
“We’re going to....North Dakota!!” Me: 😮😮😮 Damn, we’re going back? My mom’s from Bismarck. I was going to school during the height of the oil boom in 2012. So many horror stories out of Williston
The ratio of women vs men, the drugs spinning around, the human trafficking, the teacher that was murdered nearby in Great Falls while on a jog. I had an oil field worker pretty much proposition me while at my job-in a bookstore! I hid in our cafe until he left. I was shaken that he chose to ask if I could be his “friend” on the floor in the middle of my job.

Maybe going stir crazy affects your spacial awareness and judgment of dimensions of things? Maybe he was going to starve himself skinny first but decided that the escape just had to happen right away?

I mean, Detroit so hard-hit for jobs since the car industry moved out; he thought he would go and try to find his niche . . .
Oh man that is terrible!
Sorry for your loss
So your young worker who went to the oil field to "make the big money" wasn't a vulture???
@@NoBootyBeauty no, he was a bright eyed talented young man eager to work hard in exchange for a higher standard of living for his family. By vultures I mean opportunistic immoral people who don’t care whom they hurt or steal from, instead of exchanging goods and services in the free market.
Same thing happened in Odessa TX. People came to work the oil boom, cost of living soared. Then it tanked and all these people were stranded there with no jobs and no money. They started getting desperate and the crime rate became so bad, you had to be careful just getting gas, someone would try to rob you...

My father used to work for James.. he sometimes tells the story of when he "shook hands with the devil"
Please tell us more
This has always been a fascinating case for me.
Omggg chilling
Tex Hall is my uncle. I’m from North Dakota, my family owns multiple oil companies. This entire story is sad and tragic. I pray for the family who lost their loved one and for the people this man has murdered. Never met James.
I would love to see an episode about MMIW (missing and murdered indigenous women) surrounding oil fields in the dakotas. I'm not sure how easy that would be to document, but it would help to shed some light on something that is currently happening.
It's a massive problem in Alaska, too. It's sickening how little the US seems to care about indigenous women as a whole.
Fantastic idea. I hope it gets covered. It's disgusting how little attention the assaults and murders get. Racism and misogyny compounded.

@Ace Nothing Yes, that's true, but unfortunately, nowadays--- that's the exception. Better to be suspicious (and wrong) than to be trusting and WRONG.
