I finally picked myself up a 67 mustang after 22 years. And all I ever knew looking under the hood of my dads car, was how badass the red touches of the ignition system looked. MSD HOOK ME UP!!!
You can never have "too good" of an ignition system. Even if a car is just an appliance to you - you still want your ignition system to be the best that it can possibly be. Having the best ignition system possible improves torque, horsepower, gas mileage, and it also makes your exhaust emissions be cleaner.
I have been using MSD ignition for many years and works great. But there is a problem with using the unit if you have to get a smog test every year. The MSD can drive the smog computer at the testing station crazy and can cause you to fail the smog test. The smog test computer clamp on RPM pickup expects to see just one spark per crank shaft rotation. The multiple sparks in the plug wire confuses the smog computer causing a test fail when it cannot determine the engines correct RPM. So I have to disconnect the MSD and install a stock Ford ignition Dura spark control module before each test. It is not that difficult to do but do be aware of the problem if you happen to fail the smog test with your MSD setup.

It is a very valid question to calculate a very valid parameter, (energy). Please explain your offensive reply...A YEAR LATER! Again, SuperDave, do you know the capacitance (C) of the capacitor. Igniter vs Points distributor vs HEI I have a 1990 Lincoln Town with the Windsor V8. Looking for tune-up advice, how to get the best fuel efficiency. upgrading does sound like less maintenance but questioning ROI Return On Investment? btw the car has sat for 8 years and running well on warm days. but if I don't let it warm up 20* F or colder and try to drive off after 10 min it seems rough until it gets to operating temp. also after 45 to 1hr idle to op temp. it will kill the motor most of the time when I change gears R or D. I haven't noticed during warmer days dying during gear change but I have only had it for three weeks.
I need to pull Timing for nitrous. But all the msd ok some do the nos step but i think its got to much . I just need a plug set up so when 12v is seen it pulls some timing out . Any help or information on a way to do this . Any help would be helpful
MSD ignition boxes are garbage as fuck. The old 6AL's from back in the day were tanks. Those things never went bad. Bought a brand new one from summit. Lasted all of two days and left me stranded in the middle of an intersection. Took it back and bought a HP digital box which is cheaper, smaller, and puts out more voltage. Haven't had a single issue since. Their distributors are decent but I'll never buy another MSD box ever.
Why don't MSD make a distributor cap with a sensor in it to read the exact location of the rotor, a set wires connecting it to a ignition box with mounting holes and spark plug wire post. Electronics inside to tell which spark plug to fire depending on the location of the rotor under the cap. Plus a power supply wire and hardware, plus longer spark plug wires and mounts for them.
