- Does Tumeric Help with Tendon Recovery?
Usually when you strain a tendon, the body goes through an acute inflammatory response where there will be increased blood flow to the area bringing in the immune cells to start the repair process of the injured tendon. If you keep stressing and overloading the tendon, and not provide the area with some time to heal, the inflammation can be prolonged, and damage continues. When the breakdown of the tendon surpasses the body’s ability and speed to heal, this is where you get a poor adaptive response to healing making the tendon weaker and more susceptible to injury.
So how does turmeric help with tendinopathy? The active compound in turmeric that has all these good benefits is curcumin. Turmeric is the root of the spice plant, and curcumin can be extracted from the turmeric. I will be referring more to curcumin than turmeric for the rest of the video, since curcumin is the active compound in this delicious spice! Curcumin helps chronic tendinopathy in 4 ways:
1) Antioxidant
2) Antiinflammatory
3) Improves collagen organization
4) Analgesic
