I started doing calf raises and one leg calf raises. Also I walk backwards for about 20mins daily. That has minimized the pain day by day. I can feel the pain slowly going away.
@jeromep4148 I wanted to thank you for taking the time to create this video. I'm 46 and I absolutely love basketball and I play it 3-4 times a week. A few weeks ago, for the first time in my life I started to feel some pain in my Achilles. Ever since it's been a mad scramble of trial and error trying to find a solution. I started to get a bit depressed thinking that I would have to give up playing. Your simple taping technique has made a world of difference. Thanks again buddy!
I don’t play basketball for two years because of my chronic achilles tendon. I have tried everything. Pain comes again after a few trainings. Hope that this video lesson will work.
Totally agree with the taping method as I can only imagine how those sports where you're launching and changing directions quickly would aggravate the heck out of the achilles. I have chronic tendinopathy in both ankles and only after a year and a half, I am steadily improving through a multi pronged approach. Home use of a massage gun, hand massage, gentle stretches but most importantly plenty of calf raises and farmers walking. I now do about 400 raises a day and now I walk with 33 pound dumbells for a long distances including up hills. It's all about forcing the tendons to normalize and heal and I believe it is possible at any age to achieve this as long as the approach is steady and not overloading the tendons too early.
@@podgurje100 Not back to 100% normal but much more resilient and much less pain. It doesn't bother me anymore. If I have a big day walking around I will still come home a bit sore and limpy but after some massage and a nights sleep, I will recover really well. All in all, I would say an 70% improvement plus I'm fitter and healthier.
Hi Jerome, thank you for sharing your story and taping technique. I was starting to have Achilles tendonitis and tried the tape before jogging or playing basketball and my Achilles tendonitis is no more. Before trying the tape I would exercise or play basketball only to wake the next day barely being able to walk. Now i wake up fine and am able to continue the next morning without any pain. I am extremely happy I came across this video and am thankful for UA-cam.
I've tried most solutions on youtube. This one gave me the most resolution. I tried ice, wraps, ibuprofen, gels, rest, etc. Athletic tape is a fantastic solution. Thanks Jerome.
Will give this taping technique a try. Thanks for showing the tape you use. You're right about rest. I'm a lifelong runner. Achillies tendonitis always comes back.
Thank you so much for making this video Jerome. I have been suffering from achilles tendonitis after playing pickleball for about a month. I followed your taping suggestion and today is the first time that I have no soreness in the achilles after playing for 3 hours!
Thank you so much, Mr. Jerome, for this incredibly helpful video! I've tried almost every treatment for my Achilles, including PRP, eccentric, and plyometric exercises, but nothing seemed to fully work. As a basketball player, dealing with Achilles pain has been a huge challenge for me. After following your taping method, today is the first day my leg is not painful at all. I’m so grateful for your guidance-it’s truly a game-changer! 🙏🏀
That so great to hear. If you are like me, your Achilles is asking for 0:04 rest so it can repair itself. For me taping helped reduce the load enough so I was achieving “active rest”. But you may need to cut back for a while - and work on your “Luca no jump fade away”.
There are many youtube videos showing achilles taping techniques. A big difference here is that you can do this by yourself. When you are training everyday, that is a must.
I have chronic Achilles insertional tendonitis. I am an athlete and runner. The pain is pretty bad. I’ve picked up pickleball about a year ago and my Achilles have been aching. I can hardly walk in the morning. I went to a podiatrist, inserts, brace, massage, eccentrics and still the same. I have been doing this taping method for a week and I am not miserable after playing. It’s not magic but I am seeing a huge improvement in my post play pain. Thank you!!
If the tape only allows you to “survive” but you don’t believe you are gradually improving that’s a problem. Sometimes you just have to rest it - like it or not … very hard to do ….
Normally I press on the back of my ankle and it hurts and I have to ice it. I have gradually been feeling better and better. I’ll repost in a month how I’m feeling
I don't use the tape during the day, but I use it at night when sleeping to keep my foot from plantarflexion and I have no pain anymore throughout the day.
Thanks for sharing. At 52 years old I am having tendinitis for the first time and it's a roadblock to me staying active. I think the tape investment is totally worth it.
Hello, I tried putting the elastic tape, then holding it with non elastic on both sides. I can clearly say that your advice helped me big time. ! I feel like not having any pain anymore. You are a legend thank you 👍
@@foxtrotcoinsbitcoins6455 I play football which is way more intense than slow running. If you have Achilles pain it means you overused them. You have to put the elastic tape vertically and the normal tape horizontally on top to hold the elastic one. Then you'll have absolutely no pain. Keep doing it for months and the pain will be gone.
@@foxtrotcoinsbitcoins6455 I would say : yes and yes. But everyone is different. Give it a try. Just buy one roll of tape at cvs and see if your body responds.
This is an amazing solution that worked wonders for me. I'm a soccer referee, and I was sidelined for a couple weeks with an achilles flare-up. Started rehab with progressively increasing load on the achilles, which is showing good results. But this taping technique enabled me to get back out and work as a referee with confidence much sooner than I would have if I waited until my rehab completed.
Ive been doing martial arts since 10 YO. Have good technique, tried all fisio protocols, never understood why my ankles/achilles hurt and everyone else was fine. This year started taping and its life changing the difference. Now I have average structure at that joint and problem is G O N E . Don’t believe the “tape makes you weaker” 27 years late but still have time to kick hard.
Tried this for the first time yesterday felt way less pressure on my Achilles and pain the following day was halved. I’m 28 and developed Achilles tendinitis after having surgery on my ankle and years of abuse due to playing soccer my whole life. This helped a lot.
@@eriklarson5257 I have just been wrapping it before I play sports because I only feel inflammation and discomfort after I play sports but you could wrap it on a day to day basis if it’s that discomforting. However in the long run you should focus on strengthening your calf’s and adding isometrics and plyometrics. There is a UA-cam page called squat university that talks about rehabilitation of Achilles tendinitis and it has helped me a lot. Those exercises plus icing and massaging from my calf down including my foot has helped me personally reduce the pain by a massive amount.
I just did before sport. i tried it one day at work when i knew I would be on my feet all day long. It was during dry winter months. At end of day, tape took my skin off when removing. Never did that again!
okay i’ve struggled with this for less years than most of you but all i did was roll my ankle skateboarding and didn’t let it heal. worst mistake of my life if i had one with that’s what i would undo even taking a step of a curb would make my foot hurt the next day and this is the best streak ive been on in years so i’m really hopin this will help me get to the next level of being able to do calf raise rehab without the fear of messing it up all over again
I've been limping every day for the last 2 months! Mornings and evenings! During the lunch time the foot kind of warmed up and wasn't as exhasted so I was able to walk normally. I'm gonna buy the tape tomorrow - I need a solution. Thank you
Of course constant load on you achilles helps over time. But I have bad ankles anyway, so I wear swede-o high ankle braces. This helps a tonne, and I strengthen the achilles in my spare time (calve raises, jogging, speed rope). Anything where I have to react quickly to someone else's movements; I wear the braces.

Hey I found this video and it worked today! Wow! You had me watching saying you’ve had it for years with no fixes, cause same. Thank you so much! Going to continue doing this
Why would taping it fix the problem though? I haven't been able to play soccer last summer and I probably won't have any luck this summer because I have tendonitis on both of my Achilles tendons but mainly my right side. I'm just confused as the how tape can solve the pain? Thanks and let me know.
@@TheGizmo360 iv had insertional tendinitis in both feet and it’s the hardest to treat because of the blood flow what I did was first I got a cortisone injection and gave them a rest for a couple of weeks then I started strengthening exercises then after 5 weeks iv started playing 3 games of footy a week before every game I strap my Achilles roughly the same way except I use 1 strip of good quality Rigid tape from the bottom of my sole to roughly half way up my achilles then I double it up with a good quality kinesiology tape and what I found is that compression calf’s socks work wonders it isn’t a cure but it helps me get back on the field now I’m planning to do PRP injections into the Achilles and my advice is for u to go and get some orthotics made up for your feet

Hello long time runner here. I have had a severe Achilles Tendonitis back in 2018, and it became a chronic issue up to this day. I was 38 when I got it, I am 44 now. Tried a lot if things, Physios, even the machine you have :) lots of treatment and exercises but it was never corrected. Starting two weeks ago I stated kinesio taping just like you suggested and within two weeks it works like magic. Don't get me wrong, probably just like you suggested regular taping would work too, but I took my chances with a rocktape. At least in the morning I do not feel the stiffness and taking the first 4-5 steps are not painful anymore. Thanks a lot for the advice 🙂👍Very much appreciated.
That’s great to hear you came up with an approach that is providing help. Just don’t let the problem persist long term (it does need to eventually “go away”). For me , it seemed like the longer the inflammation persisted, the longer it took to go away. I have heard people say it took them years!!
@@jeromep4148 True, it takes a while. Unfortunately it is an injury that doesn't simply go away if you stop doing what you are doing or exercising. It actually gets worse if you don't use your archives tendon at all, unless of course you rupture it completely which is the last stop in this journey 😄It is not a simple injury in that sense, that you have keep doing some kind of moderate exercise while not making it worse 🤓
I wanted to post a follow up response. Since I posted here about a year ago I'm doing much better and do not use tape any more since I no longer have pain in the achilles. I had both insertional and mid achilles tendonitis. All I changed was me shoes from Asics to Altra (no heel elevation) , cleaned up my diet and exercise normally, get plenty of sleep. Occasionally I have some pain but it much better now. When I go on long hikes now I notice soreness the next day in the upper portion of the soleus where its supposed to be sore.
This has been an abslute lifesaver for me.I am 36 and have had bad achillies pain for over 1 year from playing lots of sports. This is only thing that stops the pain when im playing soccer.
That is great to hear. Just a word of caution. Long term Achilles tendonitis can be really bad. You can develop calcification issues where the Achilles connects to the bone as one example. The taping should be sort of a crutch to let you stay active while healing is occurring. So ultimately f you are healing you eventually don’t need to tape anymore. So just be careful with it!
Try: 1) This man's taping method. 2) Gradual strength training for calves - many videos on this, not just bouncing through calf raises. 3) Find Kneesovertoes guy on youtube -- strengthen knees and posterior chain muscles that stabilize in sports (Calf works too hard if knees are weak). 4) Walking backwards on treadmill with incline if possible - 20min per day. 5) Prioritize grassfed beef, eggs, chicken and reduce carbs. This helps muscles and tendons recover and helps you drop weight that puts more stress on joints. Reduce added sugar to near zero if possible.
I have flatter feet and my arches have been causing issues the last few years. The last 6-7 months I’ve had issues in my left foot that have now moved to my Achilles tendon. This has been VERY helpful since my job requires me to be very active! Thanks for taking the time to explain everything!
I’ve had chronic Achilles tendinitis in both heals forgoing on 7 years. I’ve tried everything too and I’m feeling desperate. Doctors give me conflicted advice. So I’ll try this
We have too much iron in our system. Take vitamin k2, copper and zinc, vitamin A and E, and magnesium. All the taping and physical therapy only goes so far, they are at best temporary fixes.
This is a great way to get some relief. However, there are great physical therapy interventions to help any type of tendinitis like issues as it is when the amount of muscular use has exceeded the capacity of they local muscle tissue for long term results. There are specific isometric exercises (ie. volume, duration and rest parameters to name a few) that help address lower extremity tendinitis as well as implementation of progressive overloading training patterns that can help one get back to sport symptom free or for every day. When the capacity of the respective tissue source(s) exceed the demands of what the person places on it, there is no more tendinitis.
A lot of us, myself included, have a tendency to continue our activities while our body is desperately trying to recover from an injury - not always a good recipe for success. Seeking professional help early is never a bad idea.
I have chronic Achilles tendinitis in both ankles :( it sucks. I can’t walk for more than a few blocks without pain, sometimes a few steps hurts. I’ve been going to physical therapy for two years and nothing ever really helps. I reinjure so easily. I too have a bunch of different things I’ve bought to try to heal myself. I hope your suggestions will finally help me overcome the pain!
Thanks so much for the video. I have exactly chronic Achilles tendinitis in both ankles. And I tried most methods you tried too that didn’t work. I just bought some tape and will give the tape method a try. I played a lot basketball and soccer. The stiff structure of soccer cleats in combination with playing on firm artificial turfs does the most damage in my mind to the ankles.
Thank you for this video! I will try the tape. I am not going to rest…I lap swim, run, hike, and play pickleball. I appreciate you taking the time showing all the products you tried.
Thanks for this. I have had tendonitis in the past where the only cure has been rest. The cause was overuse and not resting enough. I tried your taping technique on a couple of runs a few weeks ago but I was probably coming back too soon. I do think the taping reduced the amount of extra damage I was causing but decided to just bear it out and not run for a few more weeks ( difficult as us runners are paranoid we will lose all our fitness!) until the pain went down. Luckily my other tendon is fine so was able to compare against that. I did keep on walking though and just had to get through those first few minutes of walking. The pain went from 3/10 to 2/10 then 1/10 then probably 0.5/10. Until it seemed like zero. So unless my body was going to play a cruel trick, I taped up and ran a reasonable 5k out and back run. At the turnaround point, it was very tempting to extend it to my 10k route but thought why risk it? So I completed the 5K and it is absolutely fine. 10k next in a few days - then if that is ok, I'll do my 10 miles at the weekend. I'll tape them all. My only criticism is that it can feel a bit like a brake on my running pace at first. So I would hope at some point I can run without the tape.
Thank you, thank you! Two things are helping my Achilles Tendonitis, Eccentric Stretching and Taping. No one else suggested taping so I didn't tape until I watched your video. Simple solution and I was able to ride my horse without any flareup. Thanks again for posting this really helpful video.
I took a year off last year after nine years of cheerleading and that’s when my pain began in my right Achilles. This is my 2nd season off and now I am debating whether or not I should go back to cheer and do a bunch of crazy flips, because after excessive research, I believe I’m in pain because the Achilles is not getting enough load like it was getting a few years ago. The tape helps me with the most support until it ends up loosening up and then i will have to stop what I’m doing and rewrap because the pain begins to come back. I have not tried wrapping your way but I will try next time. I have tried a compression sock with elastic straps attached to it. The thing with that is the straps eventually become weak having me to wrap my ankle super tight to feel the affect then my foot goes numb because it’s not getting any blood. Im on the couch right now with a heating pad on. My drs appointment is coming up and I will be sure not to cancel it after canceling 3 already. I am not going to do physical therapy and am going to see if I can get an mri right away. This tendinitis makes me feel like I’m trapped inside my body. I’m 21 and it feels like I am going to have this for the rest of my life. If you have any recommendations for tennis shoes I would appreciate it thanks
I know it's hard gabey. I'm 24 and have a plethora of chronic pain from sports injuries. It may mean changing up your habits and resting more than you used to but you can do it! No matter what never give up trying new treatments and finding hope - it's a hard battle. I'm still in it and it's been a few years arm back and ankle pain - it's a lot...
Both of mine developed these knots on them! Within the past year plus… I think having weak leg muscles plays a major role also along with overuse and weight gain… among other factors as well sometimes I fight through the pain but it’s not a good idea…
You might try eccentric calf raises. You mentioned weight gain. You might consider poor blood circulation issues at the end of your limbs (feet, ankle, achillies).
I did my own style of taping and it does help to feel normal and supported. . But, a word of caution.. The tape ripped the skin off the top of my bare foot ... so I tape over my thin socks to prevent this injury. It took weeks for the skin tot heal. taping on the skin of my heel and bottom of the foot is fine.. but I put on my bootie sock before finishing the tape over the top of my foot.
I have only done the tape for non sport activity once- I wore it all day and had the the same issue. For sport stuff where I am sweating a lot , no issue.
Thanks for posting this video. I never would have considered tape if not for this video. My story is similar - I did icing, rest, NSAIDs - only to find that rest is notoriously ineffective for Achilles (studies show this! - why do they still recommend it?) I have tried the heel lift exercises. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. (Studies show three sets of 15 reps 3x/day will actually make a difference for the vast majority of folks. Not for me!) I did the cross friction massage. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. I did the "crystal" type thing - i bought one in stainless- and essentially, under pressure, drug it's various surfaces up the Achilles several times each day per PT recommendation. Helpful, but did not get me back in running shoes. I did ultrasound therapy. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. (studies show ultrasound can help with quality of the fiber/repairs during healing). I did exercises to strengthen the arches of my feet. Very helpful in stabilizing my foot strike but didn't get me back in running shoes. I corrected my running form! (I was going deep to put this to bed.) Very helpful, didn't get me back in running shoes. (Did fix another nagging issue though!) I changed running shoes, three times - only to go back to the original because that pair was the last pair I was running pain-free in. I also did voodoo band work. Very helpful, but didn't get me back in the running shoes. I gave up and taped due to this video. I taped differently though. I taped 'around' the Achilles. i.e. taping from ankle, around achilles, to other ankle from just above the sole of my foot to 2-2.5 inches above the ankle. No tape on the front of my ankle or leg and none on my foot, at all, but overlapping layers all the way up. (The tape has got to really seriously STICK and has to have some body for this to work.) I did that for two days 24 hours per day. The pain relief at 24 hours was stunning. At 48 hours, I was back in running shoes, pain free after MONTHS trying all the above. (I will keep doing the heel lifts, the arch strengthening, cross friction massage and voodoo band work, to try and get permanently beyond this but the taping.... amazing. I never would have believed ---> Tape!! Even writing this, that just seems stupid - but the pain-free step out of bed the last two days and the pain-free run this morning says it works. Bonkers.) Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Edited: added voodoo band (forgot that and it was important)
All I can say is WOW. I made this video because taping helped me , and at the time, I couldn’t find any decent videos on taping for Achilles issues. Maybe you should consider doing one as well showing your technique. I am not a UA-camr,but I have done several videos on stuff of interest that I could not find elsewhere. Something for you to consider …

Thanks for posting; I've been doing something similar. I use much more tape, & to excess. This method does lessen the re=injury chance until Ican go 100% without tape.
That's OK if that's all you have...KT-Tape is much better and you only need one long piece and a short cross piece where the ankle hollows. You "must-have" proper tension all the time. I call games alone for senior men's ball and KT "stays on for a couple of days". The white tape does not breathe and you can see the slack on the back strap with the white tape. That means it lost tension as you played and you risk re-injuring the Achillies. The KT stays on all the time when I am on the field, it's also helping the two heel bursa heal. LOTS OF ICE for the injury. Dr. Ho TENS also helps me quite a lot. It sucks getting old, body parts are worn out, and I'm a 60's model.
I tried kt tape initially and for whatever reason I abandoned it. It am actually using a different tape that has super good elasticity and it’s working phenomenally well. It’s the elasticity that is making a big difference for me. So I like your idea on the Kt. I am actually going to experiment with yoga bands. Just have to figure out the attachment. I am going to try it out in the next week or so. Once I nail that I’ll go on shark tank and team up with Mr Wonderful ;)
@@jeromep4148 Do you have hairy legs? I had to shave the area that the KT tape was going on. I like your tape job and could have used it when I was logging and jammed my ankles. I think my wife enjoyed taking the tape off along with my hair😯...Game night...fresh tape on now. $13cdn for KT-Tape at Walmart.
@@jeromep4148 I may try adding white tape over the KT when the injury is more painful. Almost like a splint. I jammed my ankle into a hole in the batter's box following the batter-runner to 1st, and that is how I hurt my Achillies/Bursa.
You know how basketball and football players tape their ankles when their have ankle sprains. It doesn’t fix their ankle , it provides a level of immobilization and limits range of motion while the sprain heals on its own. To me it’s basically the same thing. Immobilization and limiting range of motion so you can overcome a problem. Does it always work for everyone? No!!
This is interesting because I have a pair of boots that are very flexible and Cinch around my ankles, i always feel some relief when I wear them. They are essentially acting like that tape. I think I’ll try that tape. Unfortunately my left hurts just form walking, I do try to get 10 thousand steps daily. 😊
Hey Jerome. Fantastic video sharing your experience and what works for you. Question. I am assuming here you also woke up in the morning with a lot of stiffness around the Achilles. Do you or did you ever tape it up before bed time? and if so did you find that helpful? Just curious. Thanks.
Only have to tape for tennis … now. In my late 30’s when I played soccer and ran races I would have Achilles issues that would eventually cause hamstring pulls. Would go from one leg to the other. Was awful. Classic weekend warrior stuff. Today, I am a little stiff right out of bed but it subsides quickly. Good luck with your issue!!
@@jeromep4148 Hah, I'm not sure what answer I should reply to :) I'm referring to the Alfredson protocol, if you search for that on google you should get a good description. I'm just on a week of doing the exercises, and while they're time-consuming when done properly I think I can already feel improvements, more improvement than I have felt in a previous month of just resting and stretches. This injury is frustrating however, I find it very hard to measure progress, which also makes it hard to evaluate solutions with any level of certainty. The taping is a great idea, again I'm thankful for you posting the video, if on top of strengthening I can also add a layer of protection that certainly can't hurt!

The tape is good. but loading is king for fixing achilles. Load every day. start with isometric holds, gradually and progressively overload more. tape does alleviate symptoms though and can allow you to load more eg play. but loading is what fixed it
Hi Jerome. I am 58 and i had a complete rupture of my Achilles tendon (while playing Indoor shuttle badminton) on 2nd December, 2023 and had undergone surgery on 4th December, 2023. After two leg casts and vacoped brace, i am walking (with a slight limp) for the past 15 days. I don't want to give up playing, but i am afraid of re-rupture. Your video fascinates me and gives me hope.. Can i resume playing with the athlete tape on, even after my surgery? Your feedback please.
I think you need to get set up with a really competent physio and go thru a rigorous PT process - not skipping any steps and not overdoing it along the way. A tennis buddy of mine had a complete rupture and had a complete recovery. Taping IMO minimizes overstretching - even with tape , the achilles fires and supports a ton of load. Your PT is all about restoring the ability to handle load. Treatmyachilles.com has a ton of videos on it (all up on UA-cam) - another reference source for you. Good luck.
Long ago I had an X-ray that showed a bone spur on my heel. Don’t remember how it stopped hurting but now after dealing with TKR on the left leg the swelling and pain is back on the right heel. I believe it’s been over compensation. Is the bone spur the cause of most of these folks or just muscle? Taping - will it work with bone spur? Thank you - great presentation.
I too suffered for a couple years now with achilles tendonitis - I play soccer, and the the day after a game I can barely walk, and it would take the rest of the week for it to recover, and i'd be good to go by the next game - and repeat. I tried taping with KT tape 2 weeks ago, and it helped - I was able to recover quicker than normal, but was still sore for a couple days after. This week, I tried your taping technique, and the very next day, I had little to no pain, so a drastic improvement. So thank you so much! I might even be able to play more than once a week now. One question, I found it difficult to stretch my calves with the tape on, and felt a bit of cramping there. Do you stretch before putting the tape on? or are there any good methods to stretch with the tape on?
It seems almost impossible to stretch when taped up. I stretch a bit before taping. I have never big on stretching when cold, so I tend to stretch after activity more than before activity. Not saying my approach is the best, it’s just how I do it. Be careful ramping up your activity. The ideal approach is that the Achilles heals and you abound on the need for taping altogether.
I’ve been suffering with Achilles tendinitis in both feet since August….It was from walking up hills….for 45 minutes…once!! I’m going to try this taping thing in order to just walk without pain. Can you tell me what sneakers you wear also and what the heel drop is? Thank you so much for posting this video!
Thanks for the video! How much tension do you apply to the tape when putting it on your ankle? Not sure if i need to apply any tension or just apply the tape with no tension.
Hi, nice video, Wich is the objective of the tape? Reduce the movement of the ankle? Avoid to angle too much the foot so that strains the tendon? Thanks
I tape every time I play tennis which about 4 times per week. When I initially tape up it’s kind of tight restricting ankle flex. But the tape stretches during the warm up and by the time my match begins I don’t notice it so much. The role is to take some of the strain of the Achilles at full stretch. In some respect it act as a “stretch limiter”. This tape technique doesn’t impact lateral flexing at all. I hope this explanation helps.
@@totallyraw1313 yes I did that. It’s a good technique and easy to do. For me, worked when irritation was mild. Sometime we are too slow to address a problem. Your technique is simple and fast. Use it before the problems gets away from you.
for the parts that go around the foot and around the calf to hold your primary tapes - the ones going from the ball of the foot to the Achilles tendon - why not use reusable elastic cloth bandages (with clips for tension) ?
Interesting. I wonder how long does it take for this method to allow you to return to your normal activity level? I've had tendonitis in my right achilles off and on since completing my one and only trail ultramarathon thirteen years ago. Sometimes I think it's tendonitis and sometimes I think it's bursitis, so it's probably both. At first I couldn't run for two years. Fortunately, it doesn't affect backcountry skiing at all because that is the most important thing to me. But I also love to run, both long and slow and short and fast. At age 66 I'm still strong and fit, but my summers are mostly devoted to not losing too much fitness so I can start the next winter strong and ready to climb and ski. I also wonder if the ski boot does much the same thing as your taping technique because it never hurts either skinning up the mountain or skiing down. This year, after a long road trip, my achilles tendonitis has returned, only on the right leg. Driving is the worst but changing to Crocs when I'm driving at least doesn't make it worse. But I haven't been able to run now for almost 4 weeks. I'm in the camp that icing is bad because at best, it masks the pain and restricts blood flow necessary for healing. Stretching too much makes it hurt to but I'm always testing myself. Not patience. Ibuprofen helps for a few hours but I wouldn't use it prophylactically because again, it is mostly masking the pain. Not being able to run is frustrating. I'll try this and see what happens. Thanks for your perspective!
If long term, get an MRI so you can see what you are dealing with - will tell you if you have bursitis, tears, calcification, etc. Then go from there. Podiatrist can arrange all this.
Wow, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! I’m on day one of accute tendonitus, I kinda over did it today by doing my planter foot stretches and riding my skateboard afterwards. So now my Achilles tendon is swollen and dicey to walk on. I’ve been looking up stuff for about an hour and I find your video. What a relief. Thank You❤️ I guessing I should ice it and stay off it for a couple days. Wait for the swollen/ inflamed area to go down and then get some tape. I work long hours on my feet but I’m off for about a week or two. I gotta good game plan in my head, but if ya can, please give me any advice or tip for this swollen stage and after. Thank You So Much…Mark Corey. Also please let me know what the name of the tape is that you use. Not the name brand just what type of tape I should get. Thank You.. Also between Nadal and Jokovich ( They both are Great) But I got to go with Nadal🔥🔥 That Fire He Has is Awesome.
Start with rest . You need to stop doing things that make it hurt. Taping is like an endoskeleton (like a cast). It has its role in specific situations … maybe yours. …
Appreciate your reply. I work as a chef on cruise ships, so long periods of time on my feet for at least 7 weeks straight no days off. But I have rest times and I’m only cooking. I got some time before I go to my ship to “Tape Up” and just walk and stand for awhile. After a good rest and heal period. Thanks Again for your video. Nadal Rocks🔥🔥🔥
I started doing calf raises and one leg calf raises. Also I walk backwards for about 20mins daily. That has minimized the pain day by day. I can feel the pain slowly going away.
Strengthening without overstretching - very helpful
I had it all through my 30's. I cut back on carbs considerably, now i'm in my mid 40's and have no problems.

Wow, that’s great to hear. Make sure you give it a chance to fully heal.
A long journey for sure …
So with this your tendon become normal again, without any pain??
@@podgurje100 Not back to 100% normal but much more resilient and much less pain. It doesn't bother me anymore.
If I have a big day walking around I will still come home a bit sore and limpy but after some massage and a nights sleep, I will recover really well.
All in all, I would say an 70% improvement plus I'm fitter and healthier.
@@ShadowHMask-os4wr I Wish to try this, thank you
Hi Jerome, thank you for sharing your story and taping technique.
Great to hear!!
I've tried most solutions on youtube. This one gave me the most resolution. I tried ice, wraps, ibuprofen, gels, rest, etc. Athletic tape is a fantastic solution. Thanks Jerome.
How does using this solve the problem? Could you tell me more about it please?
Will give this taping technique a try. Thanks for showing the tape you use. You're right about rest. I'm a lifelong runner. Achillies tendonitis always comes back.
What's your solution without tape?
What was your result of trying with the tape?
Thank you so much for making this video Jerome. I have been suffering from achilles tendonitis after playing pickleball for about a month. I followed your taping suggestion and today is the first time that I have no soreness in the achilles after playing for 3 hours!
That’s good to hear. Playing doubles I hope. 3 hrs is a long time!!
This was truly a game changer for my running pain in my achilles tendon. Thanks for posting this quality video!!
@@Sickgame999any updates?
Thanks for sharing. At 52 years old I am having tendinitis for the first time and it's a roadblock to me staying active.
I think the tape investment is totally worth it.
Just make sure you don’t ignore signs of an actual injury - try to nip it in the bud and avoid it becoming a lingering issue!
Hello, I tried putting the elastic tape, then holding it with non elastic on both sides. I can clearly say that your advice helped me big time. ! I feel like not having any pain anymore. You are a legend thank you 👍
Wow that’s great - particularly the “legend” part
I would use this technique.
Does this help with slow running And can i eventually run without the tape ?
Wow, that’s great to hear! Your situation is the perfect application for this technique IMO. Obviously, keep listening to your Achilles.
Very encouraging for folks trying to figure out their issue!
Tried this for the first time yesterday felt way less pressure on my Achilles and pain the following day was halved. I’m 28 and developed Achilles tendinitis after having surgery on my ankle and years of abuse due to playing soccer my whole life. This helped a lot.
Great. Good luck.
Are you doing this before your sport that you play only or would this be beneficial to do everyday?
I am a 76 year old pickleball player, and will definitely try this taping technique. Thanks for this video.

Good stuff!!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share, it's great, I can barely walk and is able to after the taping.

Great news. Keep the community posted with your ongoing results. Seems to be a lot of people dealing with this problem.
Major props. I'm over 65 and just recently my left ankle Achilles became cranky. I've been using gentle tape"but we'll try your method also!
Try:
1) This man's taping method.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, super interesting and helpful. I'll be trying the tape to supplement my excercises :)
Very informative. Need to be seen by anyone active & has Achilles tendonitis🤲🏼❤️ 🎾
I am going to try this ! Thank you for showing how to tape it !

Thanks so much for the video. I have exactly chronic Achilles tendinitis in both ankles. And I tried most methods you tried too that didn’t work.
Happy you found it useful.
Thank you, thank you! Two things are helping my Achilles Tendonitis, Eccentric Stretching and Taping. No one else suggested taping so I didn't tape until I watched your video. Simple solution and I was able to ride my horse without any flareup. Thanks again for posting this really helpful video.

Thanks for sharing this info! I will definitely give this a try.
Get professional help. MRI might reveal quite a bit. I would be icing , resting, and seeing a doc. Catch it before it gets away from you.
Thanks for tip. I will try this before next Sunday tennis.
No good for running miles then ?
I would think it would work fine. Works great for tennis.
Wow. Inflation is real. A box of 8 costs $26 in 2024. I can’t wait to try this! Thank you for sharing your success!
Thanks for posting this video. I never would have considered tape if not for this video.
My story is similar -
I did icing, rest, NSAIDs - only to find that rest is notoriously ineffective for Achilles (studies show this! - why do they still recommend it?)
I have tried the heel lift exercises. Helpful, but didn't get me back in running shoes. (Studies show three sets of 15 reps 3x/day will actually make a difference for the vast majority of folks. Not for me!)
I did the cross friction massage.
(Did fix another nagging issue though!)
I changed running shoes, three times - only to go back to the original because that pair was the last pair I was running pain-free in.
Bonkers.)
Thank you for taking the time to do this video.
@@jeromep4148 it would be my first if I did!! lol.
Top man, gonna order some of this mine is nowhere near as bad as yours was but it's taking ages and I just want to get back to playing football!! Thank you!
I am currently recovering from Achilles tendinitis. Love to run long. The pain is not as bad as compared to 3 weeks ago. I'm curious why the taping is so effective? I am glad I found this video, will try it. Thanks
Ive been using a foam type heel brace NEO G make. It gives support and eases pain. If i don't do any stretching and strengthening exercises,i suffer more. So far ive had achilles tendonitus for 3 weeks so early days yet. Im avoidng excessive use,any hiking ect. So i cycle to keep fit.
Thank you for the video! I will give this a try. I’m a tennis player (2-3 times a week) plus training for a half marathon at the same time
Did this work for you?
@@ghiriishsridharan5719 so the first time I did it, I tapped it way too tight and had to take it off after .5 miles. Yesterday I tapped it again. I felt some pain after the first mile but continued going. This morning my Achilles wasn’t tight.
@@anthonybrandenburg4411 thank you for the reply. I'm only 17 and I've had this for 2 years now it's really a pain
I have insertional achilles tendonitis caused by running and ultimately aggravated it by running on uneven road. I did the rest thing and started to just walk around my neighborhood and woke up the next day with it throbbing and me limping. Would your taping technique help with the walking. Like you and others have mentioned, time, rest, and inactivity does help but man does the inactivity deal a blow in terms of activeness, exercise, stress, and diet. Really appreciate this video!
By “insertional” , do you mean where the Achilles attaches to heel bone? That’s is what I have. The taping will definitely help. Give it a try!
@@jeromep4148 Yeah! Right where the tendon attaches to the heel. It's one tough critter to capture. Ordered some of the tapes you recommended. Can't wait to try it!
Right now I am healing from a partial Achilles tendon tear on my left leg and plantar fascitis on my right foot. This looks like it would work for both! Worth a try!
Ugh. Good luck.
I packed a role of Elastoplast tape in my working days, along with a compression bandage. I think my wife enjoyed taking the tape off along with my hair😯...Game night...fresh tape on now.
$13cdn for KT-Tape at Walmart.
@@jeromep4148 YOU DO WHAT WORKS 😎 for you
@@jeromep4148 I may try adding white tape over the KT when the injury is more painful. Almost like a splint. I jammed my ankle into a hole in the batter's box following the batter-runner to 1st, and that is how I hurt my Achillies/Bursa.
Which parts do you wrap when you use kt tape? I have used white tape too and it ends up loosening up like you said
Great ... just tried it.. and can walk without discomfort.. thinkin the rehab is head in in the right direction..👍
Wonderful!
Had it in both for about a year and a half no idea how you have survived 30 years of that pain
No!!
I use kinesiology tape after watching an ortho do it. Works great and if more comfortable. But it on temu. I'm finally healing
Thank you for posting, it was a helpful video.
Wow. Nice video. You are a life saver!!! Thanks. Its too simple to be true but it works.
It's made a difference to me so thankyou for posting this video.
Nice to hear. Good luck with it.
This is interesting because I have a pair of boots that are very flexible and
Cinch around my ankles, i always feel some relief when I wear them. They are essentially acting like that tape. I think I’ll try that tape. Unfortunately my left hurts just form walking, I do try to get 10 thousand steps daily. 😊
The tape can remove skin if you have it on all day long. … at least it did to me.
@@jeromep4148 good to know thanks
The pro stretcher helps a lot as well doing it constantly
Good thought - thanks
Thank you! Good, comprehensive video 👍
Thanks, man
I'm super glad taping helped you, and thanks a lot for sharing this. Have you tried eccentric heel drops to also help address the underlying issue?
Not familiar with that. What is it?
Yes I did try that. I know it works for many though.
@@jeromep4148 Hah, I'm not sure what answer I should reply to :)
I'm referring to the Alfredson protocol, if you search for that on google you should get a good description.
Thank you! 🔥 I have insertional Achilles tendonitis and your taping solution really helped. Back in the game. Thanks!
That’s great!
Hey Jerome, I don’t think UA-cam allows the ability to private message. I wanted to thank you for this video. I’m in so much pain right now. I took TWO months off the ankle , I have felt useless and I gained around 20 pounds from being so sedentary. Not even that , but those two months off of rest didn’t even seem to help ! My Achilles Tendonitis is similar to yours. I’ve been taping my ankle and it’s the only thing that helps !! I use the expensive tape from Walgreens though , and it’s pretty good - but with the inflation it’s up to $22.99 for one roll!!! I’m going to buy the pack that you suggested. I also wanted to purchase the massage device, and I noticed it wasn’t linked in your profile. Can you tell me the name of that massage machine? Thanx Jerome. You gave me hope today.
Massage machine is now close to $500!!! Search for this on eBay: Beurer FM200 Device Massage for The Tendon Achilles
@@jeromep4148 thanx for getting back to me so fast! Another painful day I had. I’ll check that device out!
it took me 4 months of rest for mine to get better. this injury sucks. i used a stairmaster while injured to stay in shape. just my 2 cents. now I am using tape as well and it helps!

I am not athletic at all and i can hardly stand to walk the pain in my heel is so bad. Doc said achilles tendonitis. Im going to try the tape.
Be sure to adhere to doc’s advice as well. PT can be super helpful also.
@@jeromep4148 saw a podiatrist recommended a boot. No spurs they did an xray so no real advice
The tape is good. but loading is king for fixing achilles. Load every day. start with isometric holds, gradually and progressively overload more. tape does alleviate symptoms though and can allow you to load more eg play. but loading is what fixed it
Nice

Thx for your video.
Extremely helpful.

I think most who commented are not dealing with bone spurs. Personally, I did not have good success taping with bone spurs ….
I have regular tennis sneakers, but I did put in heel lifts that I bought at CVS. They help also.
@@jeromep4148 thank you!!
Glad you found it helpful
Man, the Hampton tape has doubled. You still tape so have you solved the problem or learned how to survive with it. Thanks for the video
One leg is fine the other comes and goes. I don’t tape anymore. So that’s good
Thanks for the video! How much tension do you apply to the tape when putting it on your ankle? Not sure if i need to apply any tension or just apply the tape with no tension.
@@naum900 No tension. The tape itself creates a somewhat rigid “system”
@jeromep4148 Thank you!
Thank you for the video sir. Is the tape to be uses through the day or just during sport?
I found if the tape was left on too long my skin would actually peel when the tape was removed. That was my personal experience.
@@jeromep4148 so just during sports / whislt sleeping?
@@Abi-v9p for me, sport only
Hi, nice video, Wich is the objective of the tape? Reduce the movement of the ankle? Avoid to angle too much the foot so that strains the tendon? Thanks
I tape every time I play tennis which about 4 times per week. When I initially tape up it’s kind of tight restricting ankle flex. But the tape stretches during the warm up and by the time my match begins I don’t notice it so much. The role is to take some of the strain of the Achilles at full stretch. In some respect it act as a “stretch limiter”. This tape technique doesn’t impact lateral flexing at all. I hope this explanation helps.
@@jeromep4148 Did you try putting a heel lift in your shoe? This may work the same way by preventing over dorsi flexing (pulling the foot up).
Thanks Jerome for the tips!!
thanks for this. Did you do any strengthening exercises on your calf / feet?
I did not - I just ramped up my regular activity.
Thank you for making this video❤
Let me know how you make out. You and I are similar age and I think similar activity level
I have it in both. It's really frustrating. I don't know what to do.
If long term, get an MRI so you can see what you are dealing with - will tell you if you have bursitis, tears, calcification, etc. Then go from there. Podiatrist can arrange all this.
Will give it a try thanks.
I don't play tennis but mine is so bad I can't even clean my house!! I'm going to try this!! Thanks!!
Thank You❤️
I guessing I should ice it and stay off it for a couple days.
Thank You..
Also between Nadal and Jokovich ( They both are Great) But I got to go with Nadal🔥🔥
That Fire He Has is Awesome.
Nadal Rocks🔥🔥🔥
thanks for the idea...don't you mean heels though, rather than ankles?!?
Thanks for this information, I will be getting some tape to try myself.
