I might of hated the more laid back and humorous tone in this movie if it released 3 or 4 years ago, but after that amount of time of actually playing DND… let’s just say it reflects the actual game more then a dark and gritty drama.

A quick shot at the table will show a D&D game recreation of whatever the final battle scene of the movie will be, and the player of whoever ends up dealing the killing blow to the BBEG will throw a Nat 20. That's when the camera pans to the DM, who turns out to be Matt, and he asks "So, how do you want to do this?"

From what I have heard from interviews, the inspiration for their tone was The Princess Bride. If so, I am less concerned as long as they can pull it off. It also sounds like it is more of a fantasy heist movie, which could be really fun.
Overall, I'd say I'm cautiously optimistic. As long as they can create some stakes, the characterization is good, and they don't lean too much into the comedy it could be a banger. We will see.

My guess is that the artifact is the Draakhorn, which allows the user to communicate with chromatic (evil) dragons within a 2,000 mile radius - though its true powers are actually a bit vague and may be somewhat different in the movie. Would also help to explain the high number of dragons in the film.
Plus, Horn of Orcus was used in Critical Role (which WotC doesn't own the IP of); whereas the Draakhorn is already tied to the Forgotten Realms - it appeared in the Rise of Tiamat adventure

The Draakorn is fairly large. The item describes itself as needing two medium sized creatures to hold it while a third blows into it.

With regards to the owlbear, the directors have stated that they wanted to make this movie feel like an actual D&D campaign, and so while all the spells used in this movie are actual D&D spells, they are playing it a bit fast and loose with the rules for a more "rule of cool"-type thing like you'd see with most D&D campaigns. While the owlbear is the most prominent example, there's also a character using Mage Hand as an attack, which technically isn't allowed. Also, there was a recently released clip where the characters use Speak with Dead and it is stated that once it is used, the corpse cannot be revived again. I don't mind this since, like I said before, most DMs will allow some "rule of cool" rule-bending, so it makes the movie feel more like an actual campaign.

While I enjoy running a much more serious and gritty game personally, I agree with you about them taking the right angle here. Getting more people into the game is better for the whole community, and showing the more serious side can be a turn off for some. Not to mention much more difficult to pull off, so higher chances of them screwing up the feel of the whole movie. Maybe the majority of the people it attracts may not be the kind of players that I enjoy at my table; but some of them will be, and with more people having fun rolling dice it'll be easier for us all to settle into the groups we enjoy playing with.

    1. I get the feeling we'll still see plenty of death, grit, and danger. The film makers have listed The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones, and Guardians of the Galaxy as their tonal influences. Indiana Jones definitely has its share of harrowing moments and gruesome deaths, while still staying in the PG-13 realms, so I can see this being true here as well. It won't be gory, but supporting and even maybe a main character might die by the end. I'd expect it to find a balance between those tones.
    2. I don't want a "generic" D&D movie that's supposed to emulate the FEEL of a D&D game to be too overtly dark and dramatic, bc that's just not how most (not all) tables play games. The drama and tension will be there, but there will be quite a bit of brevity as well.
    3. There's a rumored live action Drizzt series being developed at one of the streaming platforms by Hasbro, so I assume the appearance of that one particular Underdark city to be a lead in to that.

D&D has the potential to be so much more diverse in themes than comic movies. Sure, this may be a humorous, no-so-serious, action/adventure popcorn movie. That is fine. BUT, hear me out.... if this is successful, this could lead to other variations of themes. Examples being; A horror themed Ravenloft movie, a gritty Dark Sun themed movie, an epic trilogy akin to LOTR perhaps based on Rise of Tiamat, a Drizz't series, more animated content, many modules and campaign settings over the years brought to life. The possibilities are endless. From Planescape to Spelljammer, if the community doesn't eat itself over one film that appears to have a lot of care to the lore, mechanics, and typical table banter/play, then we could see a lot of content that goes way beyond what Disney could ever do since they limit themselves and their content.

It could be polymorph but if you look really close it appears she might be a horse before turning into the owlbear which means someone else would need to cast the spell on her and we don't see any spell effects. It could be the sorcerer using subtle spell but that doesn't fit with what we see of him in the scene. I'm inclined to say the DM went with rule of cool.
New subclass possibly but unlikely. Reclassification of owlbears as beasts also possible.
I don't really care it looked awesome.

      @goldeneye5919 Рік тому +2

@@nicka3697 Also don't forget that Polymorph only does beasts just like wildshape, so unless they're all lvl 17+ and the spell was True Polymorph or Shapechange it's more likely that it's rule of cool or a new subclass

Speaking of Neverwinter. The truth as to why the city is called that, at least, according to the books from R.A. Salvatore, is because there was an ancient artefact. One that is part of the reason Valindra attacked and allied herself to the Cult of the Dragon, but was later stolen and destroyed by Jarlaxxe and Drizzt.

The Printing-Theory is absoluteley a Thing I say.
So whats the Problem with a collaboration? The mutual respect instead of only one side presenting and the other recieving?
Movie wants to have an iconic scene and asks the Writers to include this in their Way so all is smooth? Hell, I wish for that respect more often as soon as I get to the 9th Level Spells.
I love how they got in the Pathfinder-Style of the Barbarian and "Mercers" Design of the Horn (check the background to this item, it is heartwarming great) - they do not only get cheap references in, they took Time and efford to have them be meaningful by beeing nerdaliciously geeky.
The Helmet I am not sure about, but I have seen it somewhere - my mind screams something about 3.5.

I think trying to go dark and gritty means you miss out on so much of what makes D&D fun. Mimics, owlbears... all very quirky creatures that lends themselves easily to comedy. This gives me hope that maybe we could see a flail snail in this movie.
Maybe we can get the sorrowsworn in the next movie- which of course should be an adaptation of the Curse of Strahd. But you have to reel them in with the funny before you do the horror.
