they got the creatures right and the CGI wasnt noticeably bad so it looks like an actual effort was put into this so I dont think its going to be in the really bad category. Afraid I'm not. When they showed the barbarian as a trash talking typical strong woman... then the badass druid gal... and both of them ganging up to demean the leading man... That is so typical of a modern movie that is more concerned with checking boxes than telling a real story. Don't get me wrong, you can absolutely have those characters. But for the love of the gods... stop including the same woke formula from every marvel movie in the past 5 years. The goofy, dumb leading man, the carefully diverse cast, the overwhelming number of trash talking strong woman types. It's so old it hurts.

Forgotten realms, ebberon, spell jammer, planar portals.
Like..... the greater DnD lore of multiple realms/material planes fits perfectly into a cinematic universe. Not just fan favorite characters, but events, and all manner of iconic strictly DnD stuff. I cant even begin to imagine the depth they could take it with a fully realized DnD CM.
And you want to know the best fucking part?
EVERY PLAYER'S CHARACTER IN EVERY HOMEBREW OR CAMPAIGN OR WHAF NOT WOULD BE FOUNDATIONALLY CANON!
Try telling a bunch of Marvel Fanbois that your OC Avenger fought in Endgame in the last scene and see how they take that.
But my Paladin Naga-Ed-Der from Anagnorsis?
Or my Mystic Theuge Waywocket from the Kingdom in the Mists?
They LITERALLY exist in the greater cosmology of all DnD. Gate is the most fucking amazing spell ever. It can literally take Player Characters from their homebrew setting to Neverwinter, or Baulder's Gate, or where ever. So long as you know those places exist.
This trailer looks like I'm glimpsing into a world I've literally been a part of for decades. And there is something very amazing about that.

Opening up a druid to shifting into monsters! Third- Silver dragons have the head frill- that dragon is the statue from the start of the actual trailer so you can see it is clearly a Gold Dragon statue- Slow spell is not an AOE it's a multi-target within an area- you choose the targets in the area that are slowed. You can find all their classes in the video introducing the cast. Bard, Barbarian, Paladin, Sorcerer, Druid, and HG is indeed- a Rogue. Regardless- great video glad to se you got something out so quick!

A D&D world has easy access to an option I have long thought would be a good idea for a cinematic universe: The various films aren't linked as pieces of a larger story, but rather they just use a common setting.
This would solve a long standing problem movies, and to a lesser extent TV shows, have with fantastic settings: You don't have the time to do worldbuilding that you need to go beyond 'here are some stock tropes'. If you keep reusing the same setting, you get to lean on the things established in earlier films even without the films being sequels

Striding up to the counter you place your order but, just as you're about to pay, the man behind the counter opens his mouth and says in a droning, monotonous voice: "I'm sorry, sir, but your membership card has expired. *Things that have been confirmed:*
    1. This takes place in Neverwinter and Icewind Dale, including specifically the Revel's End prison, which was actually created for this movie, since the writers/directors worked closely with Wizards of the Coast on it from the beginning.
    2. The party makeup consists of a bard, a Path of the Storm Herald barbarian, a sorcerer, a paladin, and a druid.
    3. There will be a cameo by at least one person famous in the D&D world, though they wouldn't say who.
    4. Everything in this trailer.
    5. Hugh Grant is the only member of the cast (including the writers/directors!) who has never played D&D and knows nothing about it. Everyone else has either played since they were younger or at least played in a cast game before filming to understand it.
    *Things that are speculated:*
    1. The necromancer and his followers are probably Szass Tam and his Red Wizards of Thay.
    2. The chonky red dragon is probably Themberchaud, who is explicitly known to be chonky.
    3. The horn in the beginning is possibly the Horn of Orcus?
    4. The cameo will be from either a member of Critical Role or Joe Manganiello.
    5. The druid being able to wild shape into an owlbear is probably Rule of Cool, but some people are speculating that maybe it's hinting at an upcoming druid subclass that can actually do that. I think it's the former, honestly, but a Circle of Monstrosity could be cool.
    6. The paladin might be an Oathbreaker, given that he's working with thieves and the line about being glad he's on their side. That one is just my personal speculation, it could just be creative license or some "greater good" motivation for him (i.e. maybe he didn't work with them before and only joined up to help them stop Szass Tam).

I do love the Thor Ragnarok vibe as I think that's what D&D generally is about (groups of friends who just have a good time and make stupid jokes while playing a fantasy game). Main thing I'm not happy with is the usage of real world music (same thing I disliked about Ragnarok). I hope they only used it for the trailer though and won't use actual songs in the movie itself and instead get a good score that could actually be used during home games. And some of the jokes were a bit meh imo. Other than that, it looks surprisingly good.

From what Kendrick and Crawford were saying in the video from the "official" channel, this seems actually to be set in the Forgotten Realms.
Crawford mentions at one point a meeting early on where the film production/development group were at Wizards, sharing and workshoping ideas, and they asked about an already-lore-established prison. When Crawford realized that "there wasn't one", it led, eventually, to the inclusion in Icewind Dale~ Rime of the Frostmaiden of Revel's End, a prison run by the Lords' Alliance, which they then point out in the trailer.
Crawford also mentions Waterdeep, then goes on to talk extensively about Neverwinter, Mt. Hotenow and the eruption in 1451 DR, and the conflict in the region.
When you add in that the wizards doing the necromancy thing are spot on for Thayan Red Wizards...

I’m a bit disappointed so many members of the party are human when there are so many other races available. And while I do believe Chris Pine will be charismatic in this role I wish they leaned into him being a bard more, the scenes with him running around in armor give him more of a paladin or fighter look.
Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure the Critical Role callout is them casting Keyleth, they just gave her a haircut. And it looks like the white/silver dragon is the fountain/statue from the opening scene walking through town.

If Marisha Ray doesn't get to give sass to Dollar Store Keyleth in a cameo I will be sorely disappointed.
For real though, this does look like it's got some *real* potential to be a lot of fun. I've been fighting against hype, but I've got to admit that I'm hopeful!

Let's be real tho, Sophia Lillis is really good for her age. Marisha isn't the type to harsh the vibe of Sophia, but maybe the knock off Keyleth.

@@davidpitts5522 oh 100%, not trying to disparage the actress at all I'm sure she's great! But the design is, uh. Familiar.
