  • Love Rollercoaster and Fire (2:40) are performed by Ohio Players. The funk, soul band's two biggest hits were live (not lip-sync) on Rock Concert December 17, 1975. "Fire" reached the top of both the R&B and Hot 100 pop chart in February 1975. "Love Rollercoaster" also peaked at number one on both charts in January 1976.
Ohio Players classic band lineup is Marshall "Rock" Jones - bass guitar, James "Diamond" Williams - drums, William "Billy" Beck - keyboards, Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner - guitar/lead vocals, Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrooks - trumpet, Clarence "Satch" Satchell - saxophone, and Marvin "Merv" Pierce - trumpet.

The Ohio Players were definitely funky, but also jazzy, and all with a tight, sophisticated, groove on their arrangements. Not to mention rhythmic quirkiness, along with Leroy Bonner’s unique vocal style.

Yeah I agree. Pretty sophisticated stuff. Ultra tight band. Horns give the knockout punch. Everyone equates funk with Sly Stone. Such a misnomer. OPs stand the test of time

Almost all good funk has jazz fundamentals. Fusion of course is the obvious example, but funk was born from jazz.

The thing is, many rappers and hip hop artists, from the past to present, were / are also musicians (Questlove and The Roots), vocalists (Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill) or play some instrument (Anderson .Paak, Andre 3000) or played some instruments at some point (J Dill, Flava Flav of P.E., others). Also, sampling is used little differently now. Actually, I think that it's really dope that old school rappers used or sampled parts of the music on which they grew up or what their elders listened to. Comments like yours are really so tired at this point. I mean, I think it's very foolish to proclaim or argue that all rappers and hip hop artists did not nor do not have musical talent.

My college days at OU were amazing. Friday nights there would be a party at the Alpha house. Man it was the happening place people jammed pack inside the house converted to a black fraternity house. The place was dark with a little light shining from area where the deejay was all they needed. And the Ohio players, Commodores, BT Express, Temptations, and unforgettable Earth, Wind, and Fire. It was all about the bands back then almost 50 years ago… That’s what time will do to you if you stick around long enough and nobody cares. But your music was memorable like Stop on By by Rufus.Chaka Khan. That was a time when the guys stepped across the room for a dance with the ladies rejected or not it was a challenge.. Oh yeah back to the Ohio Players those album covers probably people still have those albums and kept them from all those years. What a memory of some the greatest music, cause I want to know how you feel? Remember? Brothers Johnson, Thunder Thumbs and Lightening Licks. We were the cool generation and now a lot of those artist who created the music are gone but will never be forgotten cause it was the 70’s. LB Dec 1, 2022.

The song has a persistent urban legend, that during an instrumental portion of the song, a high-pitched scream is heard (between 1:24 and 1:28 on the single version, or between 2:32 and 2:36 on the album version). This was Billy Beck, but according to the most common legend, it was the voice of an individual being murdered live while the tape was rolling. The "victim's" identity varies greatly depending on the version.[3][4] The supposed sources of the scream have included an individual who was killed at some prior time, her scream inexplicably recorded and looped into the track.
Another version says that a girl has fallen off the roller coaster and was screaming to her death. Another version tells of a rabbit being killed outside the studio whose scream was accidentally picked up by the band's recording equipment - highly implausible, as professional recording studios are soundproof. The most widespread version of the myth, however, tells that Ester Cordet, who appeared nude on the Honey album cover, had been badly burned by the super-heated honey used for the photo shoot, which occurred simultaneous with the recording session, and her agonized screams were inadvertently captured on tape.[3][4] Jimmy "Diamond" Williams explained that the scream was nothing eerie or disturbing:
There is a part in the song where there's a breakdown. It's guitars and it's right before the second verse and Billy Beck does one of those inhaling-type screeches like Minnie Riperton did to reach her high note or Mariah Carey does to go octaves above. The DJ made this crack and it swept the country. People were asking us, "Did you kill this girl in the studio?" The band took a vow of silence because you sell more records that way

Despite disco, the '70s were the apex of pop music in terms of quality and diversity. You'd regularly hear funk, soft country-rock, instrumentals, heavy rock, psychedelia, ballads, and dance music, often on the same station and all before lunch.

The standard was so high. None of those groups was an overnight sensation. They worked for years to get there. That’s why we can sit and compare them 30 to 40 years later.

@@TheBigMclargehuge I’m gonna go way out on a limb and say that that they think it sucks. In 1992 I happened to met the keyboardist for Kool and the Gang. He was on a USO tour, when the man had a toothache, that were able to get taken care of for him. Nice dude, we talked for a while about the current scene. He was very disappointed that so very few of the current acts did not feature actual musicians.

@@michaeltaylors2456 mighty funny Sugarfoot embraced a lot of today's musicians before he passed on. George Clinton and Bootsy Collins did as well and guess what! James Brown did as well. these recognize that technology is the newest way to create music PLUS they still played instruments.

    • @bholaoates1542

I think a lot of the older *real* musicians probably don't like the newer stuff, but they can't say it publicly because they don't want to alienate the younger generations who might pay to come to their concerts or buy their records. The sampling of their music by younger people is also a lucrative revenue stream for some of them so they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. On another subject, a pet peeve of mine is the way the media often refers to rappers as "musicians" when they don't even play an instrument.
