I just (3weeks ago) bought a second hand eGolf in Germany (Wolfsburg actually). It's a brilliant car. Yes the range is not ideal. But it's for travelling around the city, to and from work (I live just outside the city), doing the grocery run, running errands. And I love the car. It's so good. I'm really sad they discontinued it. Only to bring out very expensive EVs that the Germans also say are too expensive. The ID range? Come on. Far too expensive for what they are.
I don't think I'll ever let my 2017 e-Golf go. It's perfect for urban living and even regional (100-200 mile) trips with the 36kWh battery. Really fun to drive and extremely well-engineered.
@@slk23 You're right - regional trips are also great in the eGolf. I bought a 2020 model, and it was well looked after. There is a pedestrian noise but it’s pretty subtle compared to newer cars, it’s not a bad noise actually. Had an e-golf here in Canada and was amazing. Replaced the front knuckles to support 55mm struts and installed a golf R suspension (struts and springs) all around. Great upgrade for it.
Love, love, love these videos of “POS” EVs and doing a little work to them to get them driving okay. Miss seeing the Leaf, so this is going to be a great series of videos to watch. Thanks for buying it! I can’t wait to see more.
This version vs the latter ones was soo different : I got mine in Feb 2018 and it was pure joy all around. Especially the fact it had a 35kWh battery - which I could eke out over 250km of range summertime and able to survive winter with about 140km, made it a great 1st EV.
We have a 2016 egolf SEL. It is an awesome city car. And 80,000 miles and zero maintenance and virtually zero battery degradation. I would not take it on a long trip but for daily use it is great.
Kyle, I watch your videos of driving Taycans, etc. on epic road trips and they make me want to upgrade from my 2017 e-Golf. It's nice to see this underappreciated car get some love.
Good choice Kyle! Earlier this year I bought a second hand 2017 e-Golf (35 kWh) with just over 60.000 km and a mere 5% battery degradation and I love it! It's just a pleasure to drive. So much comfort and very efficient. Very underrated car in my opinion. In a small flat country like the Netherlands where distances are not that far its just perfect. I can't wait for your next e-golf episode!
I traded in my 2016 e-golf for my Audi etron. I love my etron but I'll always have a soft spot for the e-golf. Great car and never had any issues with it.
I have a 2020 e-golf in Canada with only 39,000 km on it. I love driving it. It's perfect for the commute to work and running errands. The car is rated for 201km range, I consistently get 230-250 km range( VW was known to under estimate this). In the winter I'm getting 160-180 km range with winter tires. For someone looking for the perfect commuter car this is it.
Low 12v can cause a lot of spurious error messages in modern cars; I would sort out the battery, reset the error messages and take it for a drive to see which ones popped back up.
22:16 As a former pizza delivery driver, I appreciate this test. One of my friends likes to say I have my car moving before the door is closed. Not having to start a gas engine makes it much faster than it used to be.
This video was an absolute joy to watch. The e-golf is the first electric car I’ve driven and I still have a soft spot for it. I went to go buy a used 2016 sel in March of 2020 and the dealer informed me they had just sold it over the phone to someone in Sweden. If I ever see a clean example locally in Urano grey I will probably have to pick it up just to get it out of my system. I look forward to future content getting this car back in shape. I would like to see an efficiency comparison between the stock and aftermarket wheels. There isn’t much information available on that subject.
Nice to see the second hand EV market building up. In some countries a second hand EV could soon have the lowest cost per mile once you factor in the fuel cost. And thank you for showing how to return to the current location in the Tesla map view!!
A great car that is a great deal is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq EV. I have been beating mine up and it’s so reliable and now can be found very cheap. I still have 120 mile range on mine.
I drive a mk7 Golf TDI that has 110K miles on it and I'm amazed at how beat this thing is. Mine is minty in comparison. It blows me away how badly people treat their vehicles. You could probably make that e-Golf 'decent' with a bunch of work, but it looks like service was mostly ignored. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
I recently bought a 2015 e-golf, my first e car, in general is in good shape, interior is in good condition, outside just some minor imperfections here and there, 80K miles, the battery seems to be in good shape, I am getting 70 miles for around town, for highway I am getting around 55 miles, since the battery is small it chargers fast with fast chargers, only issue is that it doesn't like EVgo chargers for some reason, it only likes ChargePoint or Electrify America.
Don't use ozone! The alternative is slower but does not deteriorate plastic and rubber. Hydroxil Generator is the name of the alternative. Wants a bit of humidity to help it create the hydrogen molecules. And it is safe around pets and plants.
On a car that old and beat up I don't think it will matter. If you clean everything first ozone isn't that hard on things because it only take a couple sessions. If you leave it in there for hours, then yes.
I have a 2018 eGolf. Great car. Very fun to drive, quiet and it gets about 125-130 miles of range on full charge. If you want a car to get around a city, this is a perfect car.
Regarding the ESC issues, I have a 2007 Audi where one of the wheel speed sensors was intermittent and threw a whole bunch of faults including some related to the steering angle sensor, once the bad wheel sensor was replaced and the steering recalibrated (turn lock-to-lock) followed by a short drive, all the faults went away. Might just be something as simple as that. Looks like a great little project EV. Edit: then again, given the angle needed to keep the car in a straight line, I think there may be a deeper underlying issue 🤣
Man I was considering buying that exact one! The dealer had been posting it on CL for a while, started at $5k. I ended up with a $4k Leaf instead. Can't believe I'd end up seeing it on your channel anyway haha
Original E-golf has 7.2kW onboard charger with DC pack. I also have one with small battery and the range after 6 years is 90km in winter and 140km in summer. Great little happy car that I take to the town rather than my ID4. Really underrated car for the price.
The driver's side floor mat (visible at the very end) is backwards. The squared off end goes toward the seat and attaches to the plug on the floor, which will prevent it from sliding up under the accelerator and catching on it, as it did when you first started your test drive.
I bought a 2015 E-golf for around 8000$ 2 years ago. It has been a great second EV so far. Not a lot of range on the small battery, but good enough for our use. No technical issues, passed the periodical EU inspection, and it is almost free to drive it around when charging at home.
I have a 2015 Jetta, all steering wheel buttons stopped working (including horn)... the "clock-spring" wire ribbon that transfers power to the steering wheel on my Jetta was replaced by VW recently under "extended warranty" as it was a known problem. Maybe same your horn/steering angle sensor? Your front end collision theory might be a bigger issue but thought I'd share.
Kyle, Kyle, Kyle! You should use voice commands more. The other day my Model Y windshield started fogging up. I just said, "Defrost", and whoosh, warm air on my windshield and face. So easy, so nice.
I've had my 2016 e-Golf for about 3 months and I absolutely love it! And as for the price, I paid $9200 for it (they were asking $12K), but it's only gone 32000 miles. It's in amazing condition and appears not to have been smoked in.
The minimum charging state is what it charges to when charge planning is active. It then always goes to 30% for example when it's set to that and then continues to full charge to the set time of departure (and waits in between depending on how long it estimates the charge to take).
love ours but its a 2018 so the refresh with the larger battery. Still not huge range but in warm weather my wife can commute to work all week and charge just at the weekend. Very efficient for an ICE conversion - 5m/kwh doable in good weather
I love her comments with the sound in her voice of trying to be supportive but not feeling it. Hopefully everything sorts out and the battery/efficiency creeps up with proper alignment and regen working.
The eGolf is the most well-rounded of the compliance cars for sure. Don't throw away those seats just yet.. They look identical to same generation Golfs and GTIs, but the frame is actually different because there are battery modules intruding into the (also different) floor pan. I'm also doubtful there's a true measurement of battery degradation available to any scan tool. Best I could get was max energy capacity, but you can back into health percentage from that.
Saw this car on CL for sale a few days ago! Was debating buying it but turned off by the price and body panel damage! Look up the 3D printed aero for the front grill to help increase range.... look up the EV chip to look into the claimed 10% range increase! (Plug & Play) Thank you for doing this video!
"can we even insure this?" "oh yeah, its a car!" ....i'm with you girl...that thing doesn't seem safe after the whole frontal crash damage, possibly deployed the airbag, but it's not a salvage title?
Many insurers do not want to spend money on properly having a new salvage title issued. If the insurer totals the car but the owner chooses to buy it back, nothing is changed on the title. So a clean title may mean nothing.
With the previous owner's cards in the car, that pretty much guarantees either it was towed, and he let it go, OR he may have been arrested on a DUI or accident, and never went back to the car. Odds are there are some pricey surprises--and a battery pack. An ABS module can be a fast $1000. Run the VIN, see if there is an accident listed.
Granted it was a Toyota, but back in the day I had an 07 Prius, and it threw a light for the abs and stability control which caused it lose regen capability. Inside the front brake calipers there was a sensor that counted the teeth on a ring around the drive shaft. There was about 3 or 4 teeth that had worn down likely from the car having a bad wheel bearing that I neglected to fix in a timely manner.
I loved my 2015 eGolf, with its 85 mile range so much that i bought another one after the first lease ended (after 18000 miles). Still had the 85 mile range but that's more than enough for most days, including the 66 mile round trip commute I had at the time. I drive a BMW i3 120 ah now, with a mighty 150 mile range. If VW made an eGolf with ~300 miles I would've gone for that and never bought another car.
I've been through this. First wash/shampoo everything you can, carpet, seats, headliner. The spray all the fabrics with Febreze. Then last you run an ozone generator for 20 minute sessions until the smell is gone. It also helps pull the cabin filter and have the ozone get sucked through the HVAC ducts.
Getting SOH without any tools on the eGolf: Charge it full over night on AC. It has 190km of range and displays that the second you unplug it when SOH is 100% so if it says 180km instaed of 190km you know you've got 94.7% SOH It balances the cells even after you've unplugged it, so that's what happened after you have fast charged it. It used some of that precious energy. You basically need to AC charge it for some time after it reached 100% to balance and top up the difference
Almost bought 2015 egolf today that was in excellent shape….problem is range est 60 miles and round trip daily commute is 56miles….probably would’ve been pretty stressed trying to hypermile home everyday 😂.
Quote of the day “I don’t even know why I have to convince my self to buy it imma go buy it… let me go buy it😂😂😂😂 every car guy thoughts never vocalized😂😂.
21:03 "If It charges I'm buying it" I said the exact same thing when looking at my 2nd Nissan Leaf. Looked over "everything" and then took it to the nearest DC Fast charger. But I hadn't popped the charge ports, assuming it would have both the j-plug and Chademo (like all of the Leafs I had seen previously). Turns out the DC fast charging was optional and that particular one didn't even have the port. Wasted trip. Took it back to the dealer and said, thanks but no thanks. I should have checked the charge ports before taking it out.
I just bought a fiat 500e from a junk yard auction. It’s the same powertrain in a more efficient body. Gets about twice the range of the egolf and boy is it fun. I’ve had a few electrics and it’s totally a favorite.
If the 12v battery was ever disconnected or dead without having the software adaptations corrected afterwards, it will throw every BS code and refuse to drive correctly. German car BS, but solvable with the right dongle. Paid $13,000 net, brand new, for our 2016. Android auto, heated seats, dual zone climate control, heated windshield, for $13,000! No DC charging on ours but we've put 55,000 miles on it. Great driving car, handles Colorado winter with no issues. I compared it to the Bolt and Leaf at the time, and the Golf was the only one that felt like a real car.
Hi Kyle, You just bought yourself a “Money Pit”. As a VW owner from a teenager. I’m now 68 years old. Last VW I owned was a 2003 Golf GTI. VW’s turned me into a backyard mechanic, that’s the only way anyone can afford any used VW golf. I know these suspension noises and issues. Take it from me, don’t modify it with nylon bushings and lowering it with sport springs and struts. Unless you want a super harsh ride and more knocks, creaking and noises. As they say, “Kiss” (keep it simple stupid). Put all original rubber bushings and struts. And keep the stock wheels with a good set of EV tires. I have bought VW’s with your enthusiasm and paid the price in parts and repairs. My VW Golf GTI was twice as expensive to own and maintain than my 2003 911 Porsche, that car needed allot of repairs. Alyssa’s reaction to this eGolf was the right one, let this one go. It will be a fun car to drive, but it will cost you dearly, and you won’t be able to give it away. Sorry for the bad news. You and Alyssa have a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, keep up the good videos. 👍🏻👍🏻
R32 steering wheel in my '08 Rabbit! Also popped in front/rear cams with an Android headunit. I think I could pop in some Mk7 stuff in it if I REALLY wanted to but definitely can do MK6 stuff.
So, for his first car, and having owned no less than 6 VeeDubs since I was a teenager myself, I bought a used '19 eGolf for my 17 year old son as his first car, with a branded title @21k miles for $8k. Family owns a body shop, verified it was straight, and out of parental paranoia of a first time driver kid, I ***LIKED*** that it has less than half the range of my Tesla. He's at 100k now in college. Its the first VeeWee I've never had to fix constantly.
e-Golf is great, have a 2020 with 32 kWh nett capacity one for 4 years, it works. Ok, it needs at least 50% more range, to charge 2x faster, liquid battery cooling, other than that... Did a roadtrip from Netherlands to Switzerland, was a nice drive, because the EU has enough charging infrastructure 🫣
Thanks for the video, interesting. I have a question about charging the tesla. You don't seem to avoid being below 20 percent. is that not to be worried about? I have a 2018 Model S and 2019 3.
If I had disposable money to throw around on stuff like this, I’d 100% buy this. It’s basically fully depreciated and could be pretty much revived for $1000 and some DIY time (not like new, but good enough to be a cheap runabout). With this thing being a VW, every suspension bushing in this thing will be shredded. That’s why it clunks and wanders so much, typical VW/German car issue. They all do that and have since the 1990s. Tires in the size these old Golfs use are basically the most common 16” tire size ever, so you could put tires on that thing for $200 (not good tires, but tires). The steering angle sensor/Horn not working is a classic sign of the clock spring/spiral cable being broken. It’s common after airbag deployment, they’re kind of a one time use thing for airbags. If there is an ESP fault, it might disable regen.

Love, love, love these videos of “POS” EVs and doing a little work to them to get them driving okay. Miss seeing the Leaf, so this is going to be a great series of videos to watch. Thanks for buying it! I can’t wait to see more.
You need an Out of Spec fixer-upper channel. If you build it, we will come.
With donations the supporters to pay for the fixes!
I can't wait for your next e-golf episode!
as an e-Golf driver, i'm psyched to see how this goes
"So you're telling me there's a chance!"
I traded in my 2016 e-golf for my Audi etron. I love my etron but I'll always have a soft spot for the e-golf. Great car and never had any issues with it.
The etron is a lovely car, but guzzles electricity.
*Kyle is the ultimate "EVangelist" as The MacMaster channel would say*
This video was an absolute joy to watch. The e-golf is the first electric car I’ve driven and I still have a soft spot for it. I went to go buy a used 2016 sel in March of 2020 and the dealer informed me they had just sold it over the phone to someone in Sweden. If I ever see a clean example locally in Urano grey I will probably have to pick it up just to get it out of my system.
I look forward to future content getting this car back in shape. I would like to see an efficiency comparison between the stock and aftermarket wheels. There isn’t much information available on that subject.
After cleaning it out, try renting or buying an ozone generator. That should help get rid of the remaining smoke smell.
Your range should increase substantially once you fix the alignment issues.
Nice to see the second hand EV market building up. In some countries a second hand EV could soon have the lowest cost per mile once you factor in the fuel cost. And thank you for showing how to return to the current location in the Tesla map view!!
I loved my 2017 e-golf, my favorite car, and I've driven them all
I wish VW had offered a Mk8 e-Golf with the ID.3’s powertrain and battery pack for the US market.
or just the ID3... 2 million lines of code not withstanding
Barum is Czech brand (since 1947). Now low cost brand under Continental ownership. I didn't know that you can buy them in US.
My 2015 egolf with 130,000 miles on the clock has never even had the 12v battery changed! No brake maintenance or anything else, its solid.
I bought mine new and drove it 153000 miles without any problems in Norway. But now the ac compressor is being replaced. Still drives like new
I've had my 2016 e-Golf for about 3 months and I absolutely love it! And as for the price, I paid $9200 for it (they were asking $12K), but it's only gone 32000 miles. It's in amazing condition and appears not to have been smoked in.
Aero wheels work well - you should keep OEM wheels for more range.
Like father like son... addicted to buying cars
The minimum charging state is what it charges to when charge planning is active. It then always goes to 30% for example when it's set to that and then continues to full charge to the set time of departure (and waits in between depending on how long it estimates the charge to take).
Steering angle sensor may be the reason for no Regen. Normally deactivates all brake system and ESC aids
I had one of the 7.5 version of this for 3 years. It was a great car. The newer battery maxed out at 41 kw if all the stars aligned
7500 dollars for a EV scan tool? The most expensive ICE Autel scanner is 4k.
love ours but its a 2018 so the refresh with the larger battery.
I bought a 2019 egulf a month ago to drive while my R1T is in the bodyshop. I'm enjoying it very much.
BARUM is a great tyres, sold in Germany and more east. It's a co brand of continental..
I can smell the smoke through the video
Same here. If you once have owned a post smoker car you never can “unsmell” it again.
@@Harrythehunozznium helps...but it takes years to rid.
It’s good as a golf cart
My current car also jerks when I hit a bump like this one. Can’t wait to get my Model 3 next month.
Clockspring is probably your issue with the horn and steering angle. VW should have a lifetime warranty for some models clocksprings.
What does a replacement battery pack cost? I hope it's a LITTLE less than one for the "Ionic 5" which is $60K (not a typo)!
My guess on the regen is that it won't work until the ABS/ESC is fixed.
Saw this car on CL for sale a few days ago! Was debating buying it but turned off by the price and body panel damage!
Look up the 3D printed aero for the front grill to help increase range.... look up the EV chip to look into the claimed 10% range increase! (Plug & Play)
Thank you for doing this video!
If you want an extra set of hands to help work on things... or need an O-zone generator for the smoke. Feel free to reach out.
Channeling his inner Clarkson. The best car is a car with a personality. A story. Priceless.
"can we even insure this?"
"oh yeah, its a car!"
....i'm with you girl...that thing doesn't seem safe after the whole frontal crash damage, possibly deployed the airbag, but it's not a salvage title?
I am interested to see how you (or Coleton) gets rid of the cigarette smoke smell. I've never been able to get rid of it.
Ozone generator. Works like a charm, you still have to shampoo the seats and carpets and wipe everything down though.
Getting SOH without any tools on the eGolf:
Charge it full over night on AC. It has 190km of range and displays that the second you unplug it when SOH is 100%
so if it says 180km instaed of 190km you know you've got 94.7% SOH
It balances the cells even after you've unplugged it, so that's what happened after you have fast charged it.
By the way, that eGolf should have Apple CarPlay; the port is inside of the hatch just ahead of the shifter. Have fun with the car!
You can get some indication of remaining net capacity with "Max energy content" value in 19/Gateway unit.
I wonder how vagcom would compare to your scanner ; you’ll need something for this baby for sure 🙂
If you ever have a chance, drive a 2017-2019 model - it has a bit more range and power.
I have an e-Golf and it’s amazing!! Although mine is a 7.5 with the bigger batter (120-140 miles of range) but no DC fast charging 😢
I know a guy, who lights up like a kid on Xmas when an e-Golf comes along. 😅
Thanks for the video, interesting.
I have a question about charging the tesla. You don't seem to avoid being below 20 percent. is that not to be worried about? I have a 2018 Model S and 2019 3.
My previous car was an 2019 e-golf.
Loved the thing. only thing I didnt like was my 150 km Highway range in winter and 180 in summer.
"the guy selling it has an old Maserati with expired temporary tags so we know he's a trustworthy individual," had me dead 💀
Google reviews for that dealer are interesting haha.
Oh I agree Alyssa on the cigarette smoke. Definite no no for me. Yugh.
40 mile range when full is CRAZY 💀🤣
Our 2012 leaf charges to 18 mile range full
@@dorhocyn3 omg thats insane, whats the mileage?
@dorhocyn3
Damn.... If I see those figures, that I really take the my e bike......
The GOM probably needs recalculating considering driving 14 miles was a 8 mile range loss.
That scanner is like a check disk for EV's. Pretty cool. Might not go to far but Kyle loves a challenge.
