@@billystratos6295 yes. Even in an AWD vehicle. You still have all the weight over the front because the engine is there. Some added weight over the rear axle will keep from the front end just pushing instead of steering through snow by trying to balance the weight distribution better.
Its a classic old pick up truck technique for the winter months in the snowbelt.
I honestly thought it was to prevent molding and absorb moisture but okay.

The bag of sand/gravel is for driving in snow. Helps add weight on the back end, which is light, gripping the cold/wet/snowy road better. We do that here in Canada, and it’s likely they do in ND too

Sand bags are normal here in Michigan, they normally put them in the trunk if they drive the car in the winter to weigh down the back to get more traction.

I think the story of this car is that a young adult in the service bought it new, used it, went on a deployment and unfortunately passed. Leaving his family to put it in the barn for not knowing what to do with it. Maybe?

You need to mount a drop light on the lifts so you can see underneath.
Make sure and closely check the front subframe there is a recall for them rusting out. The rear is aluminum and the rust your seeing is on the diff support.

flint michigan here, just wanted to confirm, that rear qp rust is from here, the heavy bag confirms it was winter driven for some snow donuts, you're lucky that thing still has a subframe.
Evan, the rust stains on the driver floor is from salt. From getting in and out of the car and walking through the snow. The snow and salt sticks to your shoes and when you get in those metal brackets rust out. The heavy bag was to help the rear be as heavy as the front end

Sand bags like that are used for weight for us bothers folk with snow and ice. Had a little s10 and I had 2 in there because any time I went to ship I’d almost spin out

Just span unistrut vertically and attach to the horizontal metal supports. Then you can mount the a piece of plywood to the unistrut and attach the mini splits mounting plate to the plywood. I would also buy the hangers to mount your outdoor units off the ground so you don’t have to mow around them.

If you see salt or sand bags in the trunk of a vehicle, mostly likely the original owner lived somewhere up north where there was snow..obviously the sand bag adds weight to the car for better traction in the winter months..

Rent-A-wreck is a local owned gas station and car rental place in Minot, ND. Being as we do have the MAFB it could have been a military personnel’s car. There is a pretty good car scene up here! On a side note as well, no one up here talks close to that.

Small piece of advice after seeing that the rust is rotted through. I own a Honda in Canada so unfortunately I know a lot about rust and rust repair. Check both sides of the wheel arch, where it meets the side skirt and where it meets the bumper. On my car the rust was in a similar spot and due to some water entering through the rotted area, I discovered It has started to rust in those areas as well when doing the repair. Just trying to help out!

May I suggest... more lights in the Shank Shack. Some shots are super dark. Cannot wait to see more on this car.
Be interested to see if the frame is bent, the rear you have a few options. If the clutch is a Tilton Its basically the most expensive clutch ypu can buy for the car. I will keep watching and help as I can

I still doubt its an MR because of the roof. Basically, the 8 MR roofs and 9's have the ridge in the roof an inch inside of the black roof trims An 8 or earlier model won't have the ridges next to the roof trims, will just be flat. Better you check the vin/chassis number asap!!! Btw if this evo are OEM MR it would have aluminium roof, came from the factory
