    #425 makes a 3-day system-wide tour spanning the R&N's mainline trackage, from Reading, PA, to Pittston, PA. The locomotive powered the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway's excursions of the 4th of July, proving to be quite popular.

    Awesome film. That "Southerner" definitely has charm. Rode behind it a few times and the last time was to Lehigh Gorge, when the engineer opened that throttle wide in Glen Onoko the sound with echo bouncing off the cliffs was spectacular

    I love the trains. Grew up in Reading, chasing trains along River-road starting under the Buttonwood Street Bridge. We used to climb through the arches under the bridge to the other side of the Schuylkill River. Caught my first scrub pigeon under the arches of the Buttonwood Street bridge. Those were the days 1952/59 'Our Gang' River years. Me, Austin 'Sonny' Pinder, RIP, Billy Key, RIP, Alvin 'Bugs' Scott, Ricky Hoy, Richard Mayo, and the some time tag alongs Larry & Harry Battle made up Gang

    The R&N should do one day possible future occasional excursions from Reading to Pittston, Bethlehem, Scranton, Sayre, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Wilkes Barre and Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania.

    The grades on the R&N are much more then that in the video, plus there were a pair of helpers on those trips between Hoboken and PJ. The ferry move was made without helpers part of the way. It still does pretty good for size, and sounds great.

    Well, R&N (when she was BM&R) #425 pulled a 15-car train (14 passenger coaches and 1 freight car) + an auxiliary tender all by herself from Hoboken to Port Jervis. Now, I don't if those grades are the same as the ones she tackles now, but it does prove that she can pull a 14-car train with no assistance. You can see this in "Blue Mountain & Reading #425 from Hoboken to Port Jervis (1986)" on dcoursey82's channel.

    The 425 is a light pacafic and was in no way designed to pull 14 coaches up the grades that it runs today.

    Where's the bridge at 9:36?

    • @fuscoproductions
      @fuscoproductions  4 роки тому +1

      That is the original Nesquehoning Bridge, which still stands, however the same view cannot be had anymore. They have built the "new bridge" in front of it which essentially creates a wye connecting the Lehigh Line with the Reading division. This allows them to run trains straight from Reading up the Lehigh line without needing to run around the consist. The new bridge was completed in 2020.

      It’s an “office car special” for railroad executives and invited guests only - hence the short train of private cars. Day 2 of this video is the only one that featured public excursions on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, hence the much longer consist.

  • @DonCormack
    @DonCormack 15 років тому +1

    That's wonderful but irrelevant. 425 w/ 3 cars will achieve 40 mph WITHOUT the conditions specified above!
    Excuse me, what do I know anyway? 40 years with the B&O means nothing probably. Sure hope 425 holds up!
    Just a little FYI: That groan coming from the bent F. piston rod, might be considered a issue, but you guys are the experts because you've been operating steam forever right? No? Oh well, pardon me for mentioning it.

  • @DonCormack
    @DonCormack 15 років тому +1

    I'm sorry but they beat the piss out of that poor engine. There is no need to be in the corner within yard limits shoving a THREE car train with the throttle wide!

  • @acdc9902
    @acdc9902 15 років тому +1

    Well i guess running steam for over 20 years means nothing to you. The noise you hear is bad valve rings. Rumors get started thanks to people like you stating things that arent true. The Reading and Northern runs steam like it went ment to be run when they were built. Last time i checked a passenger train didnt leave the station at half throttle back in the day.
