Thank you for sharing and going to the cost of transferring these treasures. This brings back many good memories of a guy who grew up on the SP mainline in southern California.
Thank you for sharing this incredible footage. Caltrain is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Peninsula Commuter Corridor at the end of 2013 into 2014. We will definitely feature this video.
Amazing footage. Thanks God there are people like you who are making all those efforts to digitalize the old films and load them up here for us railfans! Thumbs up and greetings from Mega :)
This was some great footage, and the sound was great too, very nice job. The coast line runs by about 130 feet from my back yard, and now and then I get to see some vintage varnish and coaches for specials, it's nice to see the historic SP.
I lived just about 150 ft off the Coast Line near Santa Susana and I sure do remember those SP steamers and in WWII they leased some Burlington steamers too! The most impressive to me were the 3 cylinder 4-10-2's. You could tell what they were fro 2 miles away. They sure had a distinctive sound. Thanks for sharing this!
NSHammerhead , you just never know. Mr. Sage worked for the Central Railroad of New Jersey as a Big Boss and had a great hobby in rail fanning along with taking film. I'll be putting up other's in time. I have 8mm film he took too. Len.
they had a passenger and ferry terminal in sausalito too. freight yard was in tiburon, and freight ferry there too. fire in tunnel n of san rafael in the early 60's caused that trackage to be served by ferries again until the tunnel was rebuilt in '70. i loved the nwp too back then, i was a just a kid who bugged my dad back in the early 70's. after they got the tunnel back, they abandoned the tiburon line, and now its condos. The sausalito line had a yard at marin city.
I believe that the Niles Canyon (Historical) Railway has some of the passenger cars that used to be used on the Peninsula Commute Corridor. I also believe that one of the steam engines is sitting somewhere (not sure what the condition is). You might be able to get a hold of these and set up a special historical train run. :D
Wow. Hard to believe that this area went from Southern Pacific Steam and now CalTrain electrification. Caltrain is nearly completely done with electrification
4449 and other GS Class steam locomotives had (and still do have) first generation air horns mounted on the front. Now in excursion service Daylight very rarely uses the horn (only in emergencies or to get attention) and is therefore very uncommon to hear in a video. But in the 40's and 50's these were the main auditory devices used at crossings as the air horn had a sharper noise and got your attention much more efficiently than the smooth pretty sound of the steam whistles. GS's had both.
Well, this footage came from 16mm movie reels I bought at a flee Market/Yard Sale. From The Late Mr. Sage's collection. His widow was selling them off. She had already sold a box of movie reels to another person a few years before, I bought the rest.
Its rare to see GS-4s and GS-5s and what I'm guessing to be a GS-3 doing daily tasks. Also that cab forward shot really rumbled the ground when it caught some speed. I guess thats what they call "Rollin Thunder".
I really like US steam, even though I'm a Brit. Thanks for sharing these fantastic images. Pity it all ended so early in the US. They could still do a job today, as the UP challenger, 4449 & 844 among others still do
Great Peninsula steam action! Love all of those MT's with the skyline casings. I assume the first film clips were from Coastline (looks like Santa Margarita in the opening scene?). Where is the closing footage from with the SP 3706 and the fairly long bridge? Somewhere in the CA central valley?
Everyone! Go look up the video "Murder in the Private Car 2"! It's 1934 film, based on the Southern Pacific Railway. There are train chases, shots of an active SP yard and roundhouse, and by far the coolest whistles I have ever heard. It's SP railfan heaven!
Ditto the thanks below. One of my favorite SP steam was the "streamlined" 4-8-2 Mountain. IMO, they have a handsome appearance. Too bad none of the 4-8-2's were saved. Fortunately I have a pair, one in HO and the other in O-scale (streamlined). I display my O-scale SP power at Christmas, after all, what's Christmas without trains?
I WILL TRY SOME THING IF I CAN TO SEE IF I CAN GET A LIST OF MY FAVORITES LIKE THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAIL ROAD I USED TO WORK THERE. I SEE AQ LOT OF FAMILIRITY THERE.
Fantastic find. Great footage. They did have music in the 1940s and 1950s. It would have been a lot more appropriate than the 1980s "made for tv movie" soundtrack. Or just no sound at all. JMO
Wonderful coordination of the added train sounds. Delete the music. Did they really use the horn on that steam locomotive? How boring. But being directional it likely was louder ahead than the whistles.

Thanks for this -- it isn't easy to edit and add sound and I don't know why anyone wouldn't be thankful for your efforts.

Thanks, You just did, :)
God bless the man who took these videos! And the one who posted them too.
This video is fantastic! Great job on the sound-editing also!!!!!
Thanks for the time and effort you put into finding and converting these films. Beautifully filmed; I'm glad thee haven't been lost

---> Precious movie, extraordinarily beautiful, thank you for sharing.
---> Prezioso filmato, straordinariamente bello, grazie per aver condiviso.
This is really nice, it's got both sound and a little music in the background, yet the music doesn't overide the sounds.
J'ai passé un bon temps merci.
Thats great vintage photography
thanks for sharing, awesome videos and great quality video, hard to believe you could get such quality back then.

Man, those Cab-Forwards sure had some get up and go when they needed to!
Outstanding video! Thank you so much!
These are just plain awesome, len! Glad u were able to find these! I wonder if there would be anything like this waiting at Green Dragon...
Pure awesomeness!!
Awesome old video.
5:30 jeesh! He locked up the wheels! That'll leave some flat spots.

too cool ,great find
prima Video !! Walter O
I've got a Pentrex video from 20 years ago that has all of these clips.

I love the SP! Especially in the 1940's and 50's.

What engine did you record for the MT-4 going into the tunnel? I loved that small bit of a whistle.
Rode a few of those Harriman's.
i love this

Great video and original sound track...why the totally un-necessary 'soft-rock' music?
Fantastic find. Great footage. They did have music in the 1940s and 1950s. It would have been a lot more appropriate than the 1980s "made for tv movie" soundtrack. Or just no sound at all. JMO
I can't use copyrighted music, It get's my video's pull by UA-cam. So I used what I had in my video production program.
Mozart? Khachaturian?
The color looks like the 90s era
How did you get recordings of the Cab Forwards air pumps?
Why was I born in 1990?
Why is there a diesel horn on a steam loco?
Wonderful coordination of the added train sounds. Delete the music. Did they really use the horn on that steam locomotive? How boring. But being directional it likely was louder ahead than the whistles.
The GS-4 had both whistle and air horn.
Secondary Horns exist too you know
Great video, but the '90s-era acid rock music was not appropriate. Maybe a little Perry Como?

I dont mind hard work myself... I don't fancy the way everybody seems these days either...
Coast daylight
Oh please no music!!

Great sights and sounds ,apart from terrible music
