    It is impressive to see footage of PRR k4 no. 1361 in operation during the late 1980s and also sad that the operation only last 1 year before suffering maintenance issues. The 1361 barely had time to operate in excursion service and this locomotive deserves another chance at life, hopefully the 1361 will be rebuilt and restored to operation in the future so that it can haul future excursion trains.

    Just took a trip out to Altoona. Was hoping to get a glimpse of some of the K4s parts sitting outside in the yard. Got a little bit more that that. Walked inside the quarter roundhouse and right away saw the WIP boiler sitting on a flat connected to the tender, which is fully restored awaiting paint. And on the back side of the tender, were the words "fire up 1361"... I'd say this beauty's future looks pretty bright!

    • @611_hornet5
      @611_hornet5 9 років тому +3

      Read a few things on a Facebook page. A photographer took a photo of the WIP boiler and stated that the boiler needs a new roof sheet. With that it'll pass FRA regulations. The running gear is supposedly in very good shape, but needs to be moved to the same building housing the boiler.

    • @TimMillerTmillz1361
      @TimMillerTmillz1361 9 років тому +2

      I've heard the same thing about the boiler sheet... and I have been trying to figure out where the running gear is actually located. I heard it was somewhere in Atlanta but that doesn't seem right.

    • @LamhirhAbriel
      @LamhirhAbriel 8 років тому +4

      The running gear, much less any other part of of 1361, never left PA, with the exception of her drivers which went to TVRM for new tires and profiling (plus 1 new axle to replace the one broken/repaired in 1988 and 1 spare axle in case another fails). When it publicly tarred and feathered the museum, the PRRH&TS made the outlandish claim the boiler was in Georgia. Which is borderline slander/libel, in my opinion, as it was actually still in Scranton when they published that, in the EBT car shops shortly thereafter.
      The running gear is stored in the building across the turntable from the roundhouse. With a bit of machining to her box shoes (new castings), she could be put back on her drivers.
      The team desperately needs 3 pieces of equipment to do much more heavy work: a Bridgeport end mill, a taper attachment for a South Bend 10K heavy, and a decent forklift. Of, and money to have the engineering for the new roof sheet done and a professional boiler contractor do the work.
      Flues are on a rack in the other building too. So yeah, really not a HUGE amount of work left compared to the average park engine that's been exposed to 60 years of wet weather.

    • @TimMillerTmillz1361
      @TimMillerTmillz1361 8 років тому +3

      +Eowaan you seem to know a lot about this engine... What do you think the odds are of her running in the next, say, three years?

    • @LamhirhAbriel
      @LamhirhAbriel 8 років тому +4

      Everything is dependent on funding. The museum has an account set up specifically for the restoration fund, but the board is...well, they're not open even with the volunteers who've taken on the project with how much money is in there. The crew will say the same thing as I do: Hesitant to set a completion date. One of the crew commented they'd like to shoot for Spring 2018 but also reminded everyone asking that nothing can be considered concrete.
      The team is playing can-opener with the board while doing what work they can with limited resources, basically. Once they get everything straightened out and settled in, and the funding is available, they're going to start contacting and contracting the work that needs outside professionals.
      If you could hand them half a million tomorrow, I'd say 2-3 years is very doable. Otherwise, it's gonna take 1,000 people putting $50/month in the hat for a year...not that I know what the total cost is going to end up being to finish the job (that's something even I'm not sure of!), but $500,000 seems like a reasonable gauge.
      IF you're wondering about my source: I live here, so I have the ability to frequently visit the roundhouse and see stuff happen (Thursdays after 3pm, that's the real time to check in). Also there's a facebook page that a couple people connected to the project have hijacked to be the 'unofficial, but official' source of current information. facebook.com/fansofprr1361/

    • @AdmiralColdhead
      @AdmiralColdhead 3 роки тому +3

      Judging by the time a steam locomotive has until they need their overhaul, if 1361 was still running and didn't have problems, she would've needed her Aux and her new valves, tubes, and springs in 2002. And the restoration most likely would've taken a few good years, maybe even a decade, to get all the stuff made.

It is indeed sad when the boilers of these machines become too risky to use. That means one less steam engine to operate that becomes a member of the museum retirement clan. A steam museum is like a cemetery... These engines are so full of sound and life, seeing one not operate is hard to accept.

      Could happen. Steam engineers like Andre Chapelon, L. D. Porta, David Wardale and others claimed that with modern steam technology you can reduce the pollution to that of a diesel, increase the horsepower, increase efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs to a fraction of what they were during the last years of steam. And they actually did it.

      Mark Stockman not to mention the fact that steam can be generated by coal and natural gas as well... two energy sources the US has in abundance.
      the arabs can DRINK their oil. they'd starve to death if it wasn't for american grain farmers, so let them try to bake a loaf of bread out of a barrel of saudi crude.

      Federal boiler regs negate any cost advantages for steam operation. Diesel was able to lower the operating costs far below by elimination of these requirements.

      I've seen pictures of natural gas boilers that, rather than having their tubes arranged such that heat travels the length of the boiler just once, it circulates back and forth across the length of it a few times before it exhausts.
      I don't know what the pressure of steam is when it exhausts from the pistons, or how feasible it would be to harness it, but the idea occurred to me that if one were to build a 4-8-6 locomotive, the 6-wheel trailing truck could be a set of drivers from a diesel locomotive. The exhaust steam from the pistons could be fed into a turbine to generate electricity for the electric motors, and then be blasted out of the smokestack. But like I say, I don't know how feasible this would be.
      Rearranging the boiler tubes as I described above, however, would be much more do-able. I can't help but think that even that would be a great increase in the horsepower and efficiency in the locomotives from the original days of steam.

      Natural gas to fire water into steam . Fascinating idea . Clean and powerful . It's done in power plants , why not on the rails ? Interesting .

    1218 is not to bad off. It had a brand new rear flue sheet made and partially installed. I know as I laid it out and flanged it and the the rest of the GCRY boiler crew finished it. Personally I would love to see the M1 run at Strassburg museum. Any steam engine is fixable depending on what you want to spend.

    I've always noticed a similarity between the K4 and the LMS Princess Coronation class. The latter looks very much like a K4 cut down to the British loading gauge.

I'm really hoping to spend some time over in England to do some railfanning. It looks like there will be some excursions around that time. Its seens you guys have multiple events EVERY MONTH. Thats just awesome.

    I wonder if 1361 could be restored to her Prewar look. None of the large Pennsy steamers in preservation (except for 460 but I think it kept that look even after the war, and the G classes) are in their prewar look. I think the K4's look a lot more graceful in the prewar appearance, and it would give us an operational prewar K4. I don't know. There's probably a lot to it that would make it difficult to execute.

    If I Remember right the boiler had some stress cracks around the dome. The firebox had some thin spots as well. Belpaire Fireboxes were very strong in design with less stress. As a result they used thinner boiler plate on the wrapper than did radial fireboxes. So Pennsy engines sitting out side with jackets on will have problems there. Ultra sounds became required after the Gettysburg incident.

    @rboffill Yes any three of those steamers you mentioned would be a treat! I believe that 4483 is the closet Pennsy engine to restoration but the historical society that maintains the engine hasn't updated it in years. I just stay optimistic about 1361 I think she will get steaming again. It may take time but Altoona has spent too much money on her now to stop.

  • @jamesmccann1097

    The diesel was to extend the range of coal and water on the deadhead moves. 765 ran solo around the apex of the curve. 765 was always working but the diesel was cut in on the steeper grades to reduce wear and tear on the locomotive. Also as ready backup in case of failure so busy mainlines aren't tied up. Rumor has it a weekend around the curve next summer.

  • @Bassfanatic94
    @Bassfanatic94 13 років тому

    @EMDSD14R According to some website I saw she was in York PA in 1988 when she had a main bearing and axle failure. The fire was dropped right there and she was towed presumably back to Altoona where upon inspected of other areas other than the axles the firebox was found to have multiple cracks and the smoke box had worn out to being really thin. The smoke box probably got that way from years of soot, coal, and ash going through it during service.
