Reading & Northern 2102: First Test Run to Reading-April 6, 2022

- After a lengthy 6 year restoration, Reading & Northern 4-8-4 no. 2102 is finally back in service after sitting dormant for 31 years. 2102 will make it's passenger service debut on Saturday May 28, 2022, hauling an Iron Horse Rambles excursion from Reading to Jim Thorpe and return. 2102 was painted in all black and was equipped with a Reading Single-Chime hooter.
Last minute we caught wind that Reading & Northern's ex. Reading T-1 no. 2102 would be operating a special test run to Reading Outer Station and return to Port Clinton.

RBMN 2102 History:
2102 was originally built as I10sa 2-8-0 no. 2044 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in 1923. 2044 would be tasked with hauling freight trains throughout the Reading system. During World War II, the Reading Company needed stronger longer locomotives to handle all the wartime freight. Due to wartime restrictions, the railroad could not build a brand-new locomotive class from scratch, however, a loophole in the restrictions allowed them to rebuild 30 of their 45 I10sa 2-8-0s into T-1 4-8-4 locomotives. 2044 was rebuilt in 1945 at the Reading shops and would be renumbered to 2102.
Following its rebuild, 2102 operated freight trains until the late 1950s when it was placed into storage, but then was temporarily brought back into service in 1962 for the Reading Company's "Iron Horse Rambles". Following the conclusion of these excursions in 1964, 2102 was retired from service.
After a lengthy excursion mainline career from 1966-1984, 2102 was sold to Andrew Muller for use on his Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad. 2102 operated on the BM&R from 1985-1991. In early 2016, Reading & Northern announced that 2102 would be restored to operational condition, with her first official test run completed on April 6, 2022.

I can’t believe that I have been able to see the returns of such legends of the rails, up 4014, C&O 1309, and now reading 2102! It’s truly a dream come true!
May the dream continue for many years to come.
AND both N&W 611 and Santa Fe 2926! The last 10 years have been one of the biggest for steam preservation since the 80s. Don't forget Reading 2100 (2102's sister engine) is being restored as we speak! Hopefully a new generation of steam fans is being forged.
❤️🚂❤️
Absolutely. The challenge now is to make sure to see them all in person while they're under steam. I missed out on the 4014 last year due to a last minute emergency.
A lot more things coming back very soon too
Glad to see this Reading & Northern steam engine finally back in operation! I remember seeing it in the Lots & Lots of Trains home video series back in the early 2000s.
I missed your Thomas and friends games
Wow! What a beaute. Hats off to the restoration crew. Now Lionel has something new to manufacture!
Nice catch of the booster being tested at the end there.
I wondered if it had a booster and if it worked. Thanks for the information. They did a hell of a job on this restoration!
@@1940limited never knew that!! had to look that item up.
Congratulations to the entire team for getting her up and running again, and what a debute! The ATSF #2926, who I played on as a kid, is still longing to be reconnected to mainline track so she can truly stretch her legs. Welcome back to the line #2102!!
FANTASTIC!! What a beauty. And that whistle, might only be one chimer, but exactly how I think of an American whistle! Greetings from Birmingham UK. 🇬🇧 Thanks for sharing, 👍👍👍
I like my American steam whistles to have at least 3 chimes; they sound much more melodious and commanding. Actually, I wish the whistles on your UK locomotives had more than one chamber; big, dignified steam engines (and even not so big) deserve whistles befitting their stature. Greetings from Los Angeles, CA.
@@ericemmons3040 👍👍👍👍
Glorious! Just glorious! 2102 was TOO good to keep in a shed forever, it was bound to come alive again sooner or later.
God bless Andy Muller and his crew of true believers!
Thanks for the video East Penn! And it looks like that dreary day didn't dampen anyone's spirits!
This was a great chase, the highlight of the entire day was that northbound return trip. Great seeing you again!
Thank you! It was great seeing you again too! I hope our paths cross once more
Very good to see another steam loco back on the tracks. Love looking at these videos.
From Reading, Berkshire, UK
Awesome footage. Great to see 2102 return! They got to put a reading 6 chime on it though.
Nah, that whistle is unique why make it sound like other locomotives.
@@5695q It certainly does sound unique, but it sounds like the whistle from a 4-4-0 built in 1870. An engine of this stature needs at least a 3-chime whistle that befits its dignity. . .
@@5695q Because those old peanut whistles sound like something from the 1800s and the reading 6 chime is an AWESOME whistle much more fitting for such an enegine.
Lovely stuff! Can't wait to see her pulling excursions.
Thank you! I can't wait either
Interesting fact: While the Reading T-1s were pretty much too late to serve during World War II (the first ones came into service in late 1945), I've read that they were used on troop trains in the late 1940s and 50s, for the occupation of Germany and likely the Korean War as well (since a nationwide draft was again implemented). Their power made them ideal for the heavier than normal passenger consists. What a change in passengers for 2102 and her sisters, going from carrying hundreds, likely thousands of American servicemen to doing some of the most famous steam tourist trains in the country (the Rambles).
Amazing production quality and fantastic video as always! I’m so glad you were able to get quick and fantastic coverage of 2102’s return to steam. Incredibly cool to see.
Thank you Will! I hope to get more footage of 2102 soon!
Not only was this an amazing video but the footage was shot well, clear and has good shots of the engine, well done!
Thank you Harrison!
This is astounding !! They scared me as a little boy and so I hid under the dashboard of our car when we'd go to the New Hyde Park LIRR station in the 50s and I could see steam up the tracks arriving, when yet I had an HO 4x8 snap track layout !! All these restored giants have been making up for lost time !!
Great thanks to any and all who have rescued them and revived them !
Los Angeles
Very good footage! Glad to see it on the mainline again!
Thank you Matt! It sure is nice seeing her out and about again
Awesome video on 2102!
Man! She looks so good! Excellent captures.
Finally one of the Reading T1’s is operational once again. What we’re seeing in these modern times is the return of steam
I CAN NOT BLEVE THIS!!!!!!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Another momentous day for preserving railroad history. She's a beauty. Looking forward to seeing the rest of 2120's paint.
you found 2120?
I love this!! Can’t wait to see her this summer!
That is one beautiful sight to behold - thanks for sharing. greets from down under.
Brings back memories, I rode behind all 3 as a boy
GOD DAMN! That was fantastic, especially that whistle. Keep it up my guy.
Thank you Dan! I thought you would like seeing some Reading steam in action
@@EastPennRailfanProductions you got that right!
Great video, you really did a great job! Glad to see 2102 in steam!
Very cool video of the R&N 2102.
Nothing short of outstanding work can not thank the people that made this restoration possible enough just plain awesome
Love how for Leesport the 2nd crossing activated before the one your at. Find that interesting.
Great shots. Couldn’t have been better. Thank you ever so much.
Great footage! They really got it moving! Awesome video as always!
Thank you Tyler! Gotta make my way up there to catch the DL again!
@@EastPennRailfanProductions And actually see them running lol
A legend returns
It looks emaculate with its yellow handrails but I must say the black really gives it a throw back look to the days when she pulled freight. Gives it more of a rugged look, love it!
Thanks to senior management and shareholders for backing this project with real money.
I ❤️ TRAINS,but STEAM holds a special place! ❤️❤️. BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!!
Love the whistle on 2102!
A beautiful lady brought back to life. I’m a big steam fan and think rail is the way to go. There’s this Big Boy I’ve been crazy over. Your lovely loco has a whistle that is the most haunting I’ve ever heard. Thank you for this post. Coincidentally we are hoping to go to PA this summer to visit a friend in the Poconos, possibly to visit the Big Boy on static display there. See you then???
They have done a great job in this locomotive. I am looking forward to seeing it in it’s final paint.
This is incredible footage! You really nailed it on this one Harry! It’s fantastic!
Thank you Jack!
Mmm very nice HARREAH.
Thank you Brayden!
WOW 🤩 this is a very cool 😎 steam locomotive 🚂. But all of the Union Pacific Big Boys including Big Boy 4014 is just as cool 😎 I love ❤️ all of them so much.
I'm amazed that they did the first test run without the help of a diesel or the use of 425's aux tender.
Don't need the auxiliary tender. 2102's tender has a huge capacity.
Why was the aux on the 1988 excursions on Conrail? What changed between 1988 and now that prevents 2102 from running on NS besides the fact that NS ended their newer steam program? And NS won’t allow the open window coaches with friction bearings now.
Oh my gosh seeing my favorite childhood steam train 🚂 back on the rails makes me so happy 😁 so pumped to for it’s iconic return that is well deserved after 6 years . Also really excited for the 425 as well both steam trains are absolute treasures to Pennsylvania ❤
I was so born ready for this shit Lol. Welcome Back 2102
Thanks for the great video of 2102's test run!! I've watched a number of your videos and really appreciate them. I was trackside 31 years ago when the same 2102 worked freight runs on an April weekend in 1991 getting ready for the R&N's first Railfan Weekend. They're on my STC Yardmaster channel. Again, thanks very much for these scenes!!! I was at work at the time and didn't have any information when these were running.
She's Back .
Welcome back.
Great footage...I live and hour and a half from there but couldn't make it down just yet. thanks for sharing!
Wondrous footage, amazing job well done
Welcome back to steam 2102. Her whistle sounds a little like the CK Holiday locomotive whistle on the Disneyland Railroad in Anaheim.
My guess is that it’s a banshee whistle but I’m not sure which one she’s wearing right now.
That horn is wonderfully haunting!
Magnificenct locomotive. Congratulations to all those who worked on her, brilliant job.
2102 welcome back
Welcome back 2102 👍😎🇺🇸✌️
I rode behind 2102 around the Horseshoe Curve around 1980. It was owned by a group in SW PA. I think the shop was in Brownsville, PA. Two of my co workers were on the crew. The excursion started in Wilkinsburg, PA and turned around in Altoona. What a day! Insurance costs caused the sell.
Welcome back to the high iron, 2102!
Magnificent. I love your US steam locos. So good to see them being restored to their former glory. All the best from the UK.
Wow Amazing.
Flying through Leesport
They were clocked at 45 mph for most of the return trip. I tried getting more shots of them on their return trip but they were too fast!
That’s weird I thought the t1 was done.
It’s cool to see the looks of it better then the old fashioned cameras that were used since it first run in 1990s. Broadway limited imports is making a paragon 4
Reading T1 in N scale.
I love how these historic machines are being rebuilt and put back in service
Wow what a beautiful steam engine just love this video. Thank you.
Ok 2100, you're next!!!!
Woah its back
Beautiful!
Immaculate is a useless word to describe this loco . Outstanding is slightly better . WOW.
How about "Better than new?" I think this is probably the best 2102 has ever looked. Remember, it was built as a freight hauler, not a showboat. But it's a real showboat now!
2102 es una Locomotora grandiosa, y bella, gracias.
Delighted Thanks 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
That... is stupendous.
ZAMN
Thank you Eastlake Park Scenic Railway! (The Original 1903 Locomotive!)
How exciting!
Holy smoks! that is a lot of boiler ! Hate to brag but I live in JT and I'm looking forward to seeing this bad boy all summer.
Alright, Now It Need's Is A New Paint Job For The Reading T1 Locomotive & The Tender 😄👍
Oh my god is happening!! 😃
Something about that whistle echoing off the mountains and up the valley, different than other steam locomotives.
Sounds like a German locomotive. :-D
Yes, but it should be at least 3 chimes. . .
I'm a tram and I approve this video ding ding!!!
Reading & Northern is looking different!🫶🏻❤️🏳️🌈🚂🚂🚂🚂
Nice Video
Great to see 2102 back in service. Thanks to all members of the restoration team for splendid work. Will there be pinstrping?
Robert Shannon
Apparently this was the last time it ever wore the freight livery, and it soon stayed with the passenger livery.
Did you notice Railfan Rowan in the crowd? :)
Great video btw :D
Wooop! Woop!
awesome to see so many steam locomotives return to steam!
Que belleza. A estás locomotoras siempre se verán con vida, se ve el palpitar de su corazón.
2102 is a chunky northern type. Sorta reminds me of what the J’s look like without the streamlining
NS and CSX should let all the big girls on the main line to prove that East Coast can match the power of West Coast steam fleet.
How do you find out when it’s going to make a run?
Steamlok is wonderful !
When they put a real train behind the locomotive, then we can here her true voice.
The Chinese version of this engine is the KF7 class
So we have now:
RDG 2100
RDG 2102
C&O 1309
C&O 2716
ATSF 3751
ATSF 2926
UP 3985
UP 4014
All the Steamers that have returned (or soon returning to operational service as of the late 2010's and early 2020's)
When 2102 was doing a test run where was 425
Steam engines are so haunting. Nothing compares to that sound. And no diesel on that train, another plus.
Wonderful, a mighty 4-8-4 brought back to life!!! Question: are the covers over the outer firebox original? Seems like a great idea, since this is the hottest surface, and this area on steam locomotives always tend to look scaley, overheated and unfinished to me.
Firebox exteriors looked scaley, overheated and unfinished because they WERE scaley, overheated and unfinished! Paints available during the steam era, at least until it was almost over, were no-where near as good as what's available today. It was a waste of time to paint firebox exteriors and smokebox exteriors since the paint wouldn't last on those hot surfaces.
What WAS done was to rub the exteriors of the above with a mixture of graphite and linseed oil. That treatment had to be renewed from time to time but it lasted longer than paint would. It's the reason you see grey smokeboxes on a lot of steam locomotives.
Are the outer firebox covers original or replacement? I don't know. Could be. Does it matter much?
i can't believe that miss loud stack won't run for five years until we hear her voices again unless they plan on bringing her out this year later this summer
I though 2102 belonged to the B M&R in Hamburg.....
Holy fuck she's alive
That's Two Steamers!
Old school America engineering.
