After the glass is cut, which is only the first step you see here. Then the glass has to be ground on a grinding machine, cleaned dry, then foiled with copper tape. You have to lay out the panel and secure it, apply flux between each join of tape so you can begin soldering!
To my understanding, they use a glass cutter wheel to make a small scratch into the upper surface, and that makes it so that when they snap it, the glass is encouraged to break along the line. It still takes a good bit of skill to not mess it up. It’s a really cool technique

I think molten lead was used back in the day. Now they probably use some sort of resin/plastic.
