  • Dan Buettner is a National Geographic fellow, in charge of leading expeditions - he’s essentially a real life Indiana Jones. Having him on my podcast meant we got to discuss all the incredible places he has been and how it has led to his work on Blue Zones, a term he’s coined to designate the healthiest places on earth. Through research and study, Dan and his team were able to identify the 9 commonalities between all the Blue Zones - and those 9 things might surprise you. Tune into this brand new episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy for more!

I enjoyed this discussion. Both of you are very visible on social media including UA-cam and offer very valuable insights. Thank you. What I like the most is the Blue Zones offer a very clear path to health nutrition and none of them are identical to what others are consuming. However what is consistent is the source of the food and water plus a healthy culture. Nobody is reading the latest book or report. They are not researching like I am as well as others because most of us live in an unhealthy culture.

This is my least favorite video of Doctors Farmacy. Dr. Hyman talks in other episodes are articles about how grains aren't good for you, and Dan advocates eating lots of grains and beans. I don't do well with grains, and when I eat beans (even prepared "properly) I feel tired, sluggish, heavy and nauseated and sort of like I ate a big rock. It all comes back to the fact that we're all not the same. Some people thrive off vegan diets, others get very sick.
Dan also says about grass-fed beef "nobody buys that". Wow, what a statement to make that is definitely NOT true. I am really lucky to have access to tons of hormone and antibiotic free, free range, grass fed meat where I live. He seems to go to two extremes "omnivores are unhealthy and eat at McDonalds", "vegans are all healthy". Much of my diet is plant based, with a little bit of meat, I don't eat junk food or processed foods. A lot of vegan foods are highly processed foods.

You have to do a lot of research evaluation on your own to determine what information is most accurate. People who propose certain eating habits usually have done this - at least the reputable ones do. Not all research is quality. There are usually multiple variables that can affect results. You have determine what habits are most effacious. It takes a lot of work. I believe Dan Buttner is right on target about most things. I listen to Dr. Danial Amen as well. He talks about how toxic alcohol is to the brain, kidneys, liver, and mitochondria. We've known for decades alcohol destroys brain cells. In most Blue Zones people embibe of alcohol. Sometimes foods/drinks that people engage in do not prolong longevity, however, people live a longtime despite adverse habits because all the orher habits are so beneficial.

So people in Blue Zones ate meat and/or fish about 3-4 times a week, but he is purposely downplaying that to push his vegan agenda. Not to mention I'm sure they ate plenty of goat cheese, milk, and eggs too, but that's never mentioned either. I think the key aspect to their diet is that they didn't eat any refined sugar, processed foods, or seed oils.

The blue zones are mostly subtropical and tropical weather zones. I agree about these areas ate more meat. One individual who was born and raised in Italian island (a blue zone) said poor people could not afford a lot of meat but were very active and ate like you said, Chris. I agree about the vegan agenda. Grass fed animal products can be regenerative and the animals are moved around the field to get the most nutrition packed grass or fields.

Regarding Okinawa....Sometimes it seems modern researchers come and discover what they want to see, especially those with a plant based bias.
The whole pig was fully utilized in Okinawa. They had no soy bean or olive oil for their stir fries. Those were cooked using lard.
Furthermore, as noted in this overview citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.695.3883&rep=rep1&type=pdf:
"Pigs were first brought into the Ryukyus by Chinese immigrants in 1392, but they failed to become widespread because of a lack of food in the farms of the time. When sweet potatoes were introduced from Fukkien Province in
China, however, the practice of pig breeding spread rapidly, marking the beginning of the meat eating culture.."
When you actually look at these earlier surveys, sweet potatoes were a considerable portion of the "every day diet". But only to a degree since as detailed further below, there were numerous festival days, so "festival day diets" were a large part of Okinawan diets. Okinawan sweet potatoes are also high in polyphenols. The diet in general was a medicinal diet, and pork was an essential component of this approach. They ate the entire pig including all the organs, fat and parts including joints (full of collagen). As previously note, fat (lard) was and is used for cooking vegetables. So the traditional Okinawan diet was not a low fat diet.
Now a problem with a lot of the current research was that it was conducted after World War 2. The occupation and battle for Okinawa not only wiped out over a third of the population but also all the livestock. Needless to note, with war and the subsequent depravity, people weren't very festive. So surveys taken after the WW2 don't fully reflect the dietary patterns of every day and especially festival day diets.
Another problem with post WW2 research like the studies conducted in 1949, like ‘Survey of Japanese People’s Diets,’ weren't specifically done on centenarians. There weren't many alive at that time, but as shown in figure 1 on page six of this study www.demographic-research.org/volumes/vol25/7/25-7.pdf the number of centenarians didn't start increasing significantly until the 1970's and even more significantly until the 1990's. This may be due to a number of things including but not limited to diet .
Now regarding "festival day diets", pork and goat meat were consumed primarily at festivals. However, if you look at the number of festivals celebrated in the link I just provided up above, there were many festival days including numerous days for Festivals for ancestral spirits, Agricultural festivals, Festivals for Warding Off Evil Spirits, and Festivals of Foreign Gods. So, pork and goat may have not been frequently consumed as part of the "every day diet", but pork and goat were consumed frequently as part of the "festival day diet." So given the number of festival days that's a lot of pork and goat being consumed throughout the year especially in January. February and March. So meat consumption wasn't just once or twice a week or month. Meat consumption as part of "festival day diets" was a frequent occurrence.
Nonetheless, as I noted previously above, increased longevity is a more recent phenomena. Plus what would also be interesting to see is data on the height of Okinawans in 1880 versus the height of Okinawans in 2010. Most older Japanese are traditionally short in comparison to other cultures. Though modern Japanese are taller than their ancestors. The difference isn't genes, nope it's the diet that contains more protein. Spinach and steak may have similar "grams of protein". But all protein aren't equal. Steak, pork and goat as well as other proteins has much higher concentrations of essential amino acids.
So, in other words, eating MORE animal protein (meat) may have been directly and partly responsible for the increase in Okinawan longevity as well as most likely an increase in Okinawan height. However, more refined carbs in the form of fast food and high glycemic carbs like rice have also increased the Okinawan rates of obesity. Okinawans didn't traditionally eat that much rice. Using vegetable (soybean oil) oil is also obesogenic as this study notes dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0132672 This use of highly processed vegetable oils too is part of the modern American diets that have been more recently introduced to Okinawa post WW2.

It's a shame Dan seems to be more interested in following the latest plant-based trends rather than reporting accurately what these people really eat.
Let's just take Sardinia for example:
the villages he mentions with the centenarians are literally shepherd villages!
    SHEEP HERDERS.
every single sheep herding society on planet Earth eats sheep ( lamb meat ) and dairy .
    Lots of dairy.
    Daily.
And lamb meat is extremely fatty! And by the way not any kind of fat, but saturated fat.
oh and it's red meat also

I agree whole food plant based nutrition should be a large part of the diet. That is vegetables because I prefer low carb high fat.
But, this myth that global warming is caused by the meat production has to stop. Fossil fuels cause global warming, not cows and pigs.
Raising fuel prices won't make people walk more. But I'm not against it. It will accelerate the transition to battery powered transportation. 🙂
And don't teach kids to learn about food and cooking in the place of math. Math is not a bad thing. You want people to eat better, teach them science so they can understand why food is important. Higher educated people eat healthier.

    • @peterfaber9316
      @peterfaber9316 6 років тому +4

Yes that's true. But the increase of methane doesn't depend on just cows. It's actually less than 20% of all methane production. Most comes from plantbased microbes, and fossil fuel mining.
If we reduce fossil fuels, methane will drop too. If we get global temperatures to lower, less methane will be produced by microbres. It's all going back to fossil fuels. Most methane released into the atmosphere comes from natural sources. We can do something about that, but not a whole lot and it certainly won't have a huge impact on global warming.
And I really don't see why we should focus so much on the animals while we can have a much bigger impact going electric.
Having said that,.. I do believe factory farming isn't the right way to produce meat.
We only need about 50 to 100 grams of protein per day. On an average diet that is about 10 to 20% of calories, on average about 15%. That's lower than what people actually eat. Part of that should come from plantbased food so we really don't need all that much meat. But the world's population is growing so even if we reduce it per person, it won't have much of an effect on total production.
We need to switch to solar/wind energy and electrical transportation.

    • @MarkVA71

Well Peter, it's almost as if u'r hinting that 'you can't walk and chew gum at the same time'...This is one of the key M O s of the msm. Either, or,...This or that! C'mon, global warming (if it truly is occurring over sev yrs, which is anything but a consensus ) is caused by multiple factors, the key one is probably the sun as journal Science has reported ! Another is undersea volcanic activity. And one other very important fact that journal Science has reported on: Methane (natural gas) is distributed thruout the solar system. This would make some of our petroleum more ABIOTIC than plant based. The name they gave it a century and a half ago, turns out to be the more appropriate one.
One point on the carbon dioxide reduction problem: Why is it there is little shrift given by the proponents to encourage the mass planting of vegetation of all types? Again, like the msm and Soros, their negatively focused, biased agenda is highly suspect and most thinking folks can see right through it.

It cost more oil the ship their food in the winter time thus making more carbon but carbon has been higher in the past. Some say we need more carbon plants like it. So vegans want you to eat plants to save carbon footprint but plants like carbon. I rather do wild berries, eggs, bacon, grass-fed beef, salmon, and potatoes. I forgot raw goat milk. I think the New World Order would love to have population of weak Blue Zone folks. I think the Indians had it made, no disease, live longer, stronger. thanks, but we have to reconcile all the facts, and there seem to be at least a subset of humans who do poorly on plant foods, and vegan diets. And check out Dr. Terry Wahls' cure of her MS by changing from vegetarian to paleo diet.
The diet that explains all the observed phenomena is the proper diet, and seems to be case by case. And I'm beginning to think that it is not constructive to talk about a universally ideal diet. Different foods have different effects over different time frames. If I was atherosclerotic, I might go low-fat, no vegetable oils. But if I was sarcopenic, I don't think I would eat a low-protein, low fat diet. Now I think each person should monitor their biomarkers and hack themselves. And, frankly, the sickly looking vegans are not healthy when their functional capacity deteriorates as it often does. Compare the micronutrient composition and bioavailability of plants vs. animals. Animals are better in some respects, and, if too much, worse in some respects. I think you have to hit the sweet spot.

Okinawans eat lots of pork and seafood, and prize these foods much more than the plant based foods. They only ate so many carbs because of food shortages during ww2. Legumes and grains aren’t healthy even if fermented, they’re just there for calories, red meat and fat is much more nutritious than any plant and we can actually digest it properly unlike most plants, especially the seed foods(grains, legumes, nuts, seeds)

Okinawa? Really? A 1996 article in Health Magazine by gerontologist Kazuhiko Taira described the Okinawan diet as “very healthy-and very, very greasy.” The whole pig is eaten-everything from “tails to nails.” Local menus offer boiled pigs feet, entrail soup and shredded ears. Pork is cooked in a mixture of soy sauce, ginger, kelp and small amounts of sugar, then sliced and chopped up for stir fry dishes.
Okinawans (as of that writing) ate about 100 grams of meat per day-compared to 70 in Japan and just over 20 in China-and at least an equal amount of fish, for a total of about 200 grams per day, compared to 280 grams per person per day of meat and fish in America. Lard-not vegetable (seed) oil-is used in cooking.

Young people? The aforementioned article was from the better part of thirty years ago, and is thought to be reflective of the prevailing and typical Okinawan diet in the decades following the Second World War. That post world war timeframe (and pre 1996) would exclude current young people under 27 or 28 year old, as of 2023, and it would include many of the centenarians to which you allude.

A lot of folks with leaky gut can't tolerate greens. Broccoli has only been around for a hundred years. To make matters more interesting, the carnivore diet is saving people's pancreas. I wonder how the Blue Zone people handled insulin problems? You would think the Native Indians hunting Buffalo also lived a long time only on fat. I wonder if the Blue Zone people actually lived longer cuz it's exercise, air quality, microorganisms in soil, also they ate less. Raw beans can kill you.

-An "Estrogenic" obese body is created ;by sugar , high carbs ,refine carbs , eating too much fat and over eating protein .Sugar is sugar .. fruits , ,refine carbs , fructose (sugar) in fruit . Eating toxic factory food , fast food ,, dairy ,cheese ,milk , , mayonnaise , all salad dressings , peanut butter , whey-protein shakes are all "damaged fats" are toxic to your liver, brain and heart , , all vegetable oils ,,"polyunsaturated fats"" , over consumption of any fat including healthy fats like saturated fats will make you gain weight . Drinking alcohol including red wine are toxic to the liver .The less you eat the longer you will live and healthy you will be . A slow unhealthy liver cannot metabolise process any fats including healthy fats .
The biggest problem with controlling diabetes (insulin) and weight through diet is that people are lazy . You can lead a horse to water but can't force them to drink. Most people rather eat fast food , , wheat , white flour , factory frozen food ,, can food , protein powder and dairy full of casein that destroy the cells in the pancreas and cause cancer and take pills or shoot insulin than to change their shitty eating habits .
We live in an "instant gratification" society full of "lazy people" with zero 0 discipline or work ethic. Sad but true. If you want to lose weight watch your intake of "carbs" , keep your sugar level below 110 by intermittent fasting and eating less .People who eat less live longer . Be careful since the equivalent of 12 teaspoons of sugar happens very quickly. For example:
1 cup of milk equals = 2 teaspoons of sugar *
1 cup of rice (cooked) equals = 9 teaspoons of sugar*
1 banana equals equals = 5 teaspoons of sugar •
1 baked potato equals = 7 teaspoons of sugar •
    1 sweet potato = 8 teaspoons of sugar •
1 cup of strawberries equals = 2.5 teaspoons of sugar (low sugar)*
    1/2grapefruit = 2 teaspoons of sugar -
Coca cola (one can) - 8.25 teaspoons of sugar -
Raisin Bran cereal - 7.75 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) -
Grapes fruit - 4 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) -
    Tomatoes - 0.7 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) -
1 Muffin (one chocolate chip muffin) - 4.75 teaspoons of sugar -
    Special K cereal - 3 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) - Corn Flakes -
2.4 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) - Alpen cereal -
5.75 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) - Mangos fruit -
    3.2 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) -
A cup of seedless prunes has, in effect, 25 teaspoons of sugar ! Scientists find in comparing the sugar levels in the blood after the consumption of a snickers bar that has 8.5 teaspoons of sugar the same as ""two bread slices "" ! .
The sugar equivalent is of 1 large bagel a whopping 12 teaspoons of sugar !...It is beyond what the body , the liver and pancreas can metabolize. We are practically growing "" cancer farms " !.
Lastly, it is worth noting that there are many breads that a single slice of which will raise your blood sugar more than a US Snickers bar (which has a GI of 68/97). to be healthy you must keep your blood sugar below 110 (""everything"" including eating too much protein will raise your insulin .)
Keep your protein portions and meals small , you cannot cheat your body Not even with paleo diet or ketogenic diet will not work for every one . Eating healthy and intermittent fasting is best solution to be slim and healthy for "" Me "" ) find what works for you , do experiment with your self and one day you will hit the solution that works for you ...keep trying !
Only water will not raise "insulin" hormone everything else including protein will raise your insulin , Try intermittent fasting . No carbs no cookies , no baked goods , keep your blood sugar around 110 or under .The less you eat the better you control your insulin hormone and blood sugar and you gain no weight . If you're addicted to carbs and sweets you will not lose weight .Get rid of your addiction and control your "mental health" control your "Cortisol" and "stress" or you not lose weight.
Taking mineral "Magnesium" its good for cortisol and stress.People who are magnesium deficiency have the highest heart disease , heart attacks and Irregular Heartbeat ,(arterial plaque ). Diabetics have magnesium deficiency , elevated blood glucose levels increase the loss of magnesium in the urine, which in turn lowers blood levels of magnesium.” So getting enough magnesium is especially important in diabetes and people who are border line diabetic or over weight .
Before you start eating any meal take three spoons of Apple cider vinegar this will bring down your blood sugar . Eat Salads with no oils , only with lemon or vinegar .If you go to bed late you will not lose weight , if you have sleep Apnea it will be very hard or impossible to lose weight the best go see a sleep doctor . Sleep Apnea is a very serious sleep disorder disease .
Also don't eat fruit if your plan is to lose weight ; all fruit will cause your blood sugar to go up . Fruit sugar called fructose is toxic and will spike your blood sugar and raise your insulin .Fruit should only be eaten by healthy slim people in season.
Every morning drink with warm filtered water mixed with lemon everyday ,detox your liver ,kidneys with water and lemon . natural vitamin C from lime or lemons make your arteries strong and healthy and cleans your liver and kidneys water and lemon (warm) the liver prefer warm water .Try to drink at least a litre of water a day .
For breakfast eat a high protein diet or better don't eat breakfast . Eat no grains ,No baked goods ,No refine carbs ,not nuts ,No lectins ,No beans , eat a Lectin-free diet . If you feel hungry drink a cup of organic coffee with no sugar this will calm down your hunger spams .Coffee will calm down your hunger but don't drink more than one cup a day .The Amino acid called L-Tyrosine is a good supplement to take if your thyroid is slow .Anything you eat should be organic close to mother nature eat nothing from a can or package .No factory food . , Avoid salt (sodium) ,Avoid all Restaurant food is Cooked with MSG and lots of sodium and "damaged" toxic fats .
Eat for your ""blood type" ( Dr. D'Adamo's Blood Type Diet) is a good diet for losing weight .Very important If you eat high protein diet with vegetable high in fibre make sure you take vitamin B-6 , B-12 , choline , Vitamin C 3 grams a day to keep your "homocysteins" low in your blood so you don't get heart disease .Avoid all white flour , beans , corn but eat vegetables . Avoid damaged fats ,no cheese , no frying , no mayonnaise . no salad dressings . No fruit juice , no fruits are very high in sugar . Also over eating too much protein will raise your insulin and cause you to gain weight . Eat small portions do not over eat on protein .
To detox your liver and bring down estrogen eat sulphur vegetables ,Broccoli , cabbage ,onions ,garlic ,Red beets et.. Best supplement for the liver is ;Water with lemon , Trimethylglycine - (TMG) , malic acid and "liopic acid " .
"Excess sugar ""eventually affects every organ in the body, but initially, it is stored in the liver in the form of glucose (glycogen). Since the liver's capacity is limited, a daily intake of refined sugar (above the required amount of natural sugar) soon makes the liver expand like a balloon. When the liver is filled to its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids.
These are taken to every part of the body and stored in the most inactive areas: the belly, the buttocks, the breasts and the thighs. But then it affects vital organs like the heart and the kidneys.reason two meals a day is so beneficial is because it keeps insulin low and GH high. Insulin is the main hormone in your body that is responsible for fat storage.
Every time we eat a meal ""insulin is raised"" . When "insulin is high" you will not be burning fat or losing weight. GH -"Growth hormone" on the other hand is the main fat burning hormone in your body. Therefore it would make sense that we would want to increase this as much as naturally possible. A combination of "intermittent fasting" and only having two meals a day can increase GH - Growth Hormone drastically. Increasing fat loss and weight loss results dramatically. (If you're over 50 yrs. old and you have low testosterone take 50 mg. of DHEA hormone) and 6 mg. of mineral Boron .
Avoid all soy and flax seeds oils and fish oils supplements , avoid all polyunsaturated oils and food . Soy and flax seeds Though are not a chemical estrogen, but it is a plant-based estrogen, and can throw off your hormonal balance. Eat a anti-estronic diet ,Vitamin B-6 ,100 mg a day its good to take to lower estrogen ; Work out: Studies show that moderate exercise lowers estrogen levels.
A 2013 study also found that aerobic exercise helps the body break down estrogen so it's easier to flush away. Get enough sleep: When you don't get enough sleep, you can not lose weight make sure you go to bed early 10:00 p.m. .. The levels of the so-called "sleep" hormone called melatonin is disrupted and you will not lose weight ! sleep !
    Turns out that melatonin hormone has a protective effect against ""excess estrogen" . A 1999 study, for example, showed that melatonin helped block the growth of ""estrogen-induced cancer cells"" . Use a water filter: Public water supplies often contain chlorine, fluoride, and other industrial chemicals that act as xenoestrogens. Use a quality filter to reduce your exposure best book for weight lose ;
