When we hear the phrase “Blue Zones,” most of us think of the healthy, long-living populations in places like Greece and Costa Rica. And while the large majority of these communities are indeed abroad (there is only one Blue Zone in the US), there are some hidden traditions that cooks around America have passed from generation to generation that we can embrace to create our own Blue Zone at home. It’s interesting to note that at the same time we’re seeing a huge interest in longevity, we’re seeing a drop in life expectancy for the first time in living history over the last few years. The biggest culprit is our processed food supply.
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dan Buettner and I break down why chronic disease is so rampant in the US, what we can learn from the Blue Zones around the world, and how to bring Blue Zone principles into our own kitchens while embracing American traditions. Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world- dubbed Blue Zone hotspots, where people live the longest, healthiest lives. His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.

I made a soup that Dan suggested in one of his videos and it was terrific. Two ingredients: purple sweet potatoes and coconut creme. I eat it every week now. Occasionally I add red onions. So glad that I have this recipe.
That was my grandma. Every day when we were kids, she'd put a pot of pinto beans on the stove and let it cook. Poor people. We knew how to stretch a dollar and feed a family. Beans, rice, tortillas. Now look at these rich people writing cook books and marveling at the diets of poor people. Poor people with hard lives. Eat beans!
I love that type of Vegan food! I just add some hot sauce, turmeric, ginger, Black pepper, cinnamon, Allspice etc.!
This is what is called - We The People👍👍
Dan is great on explaining Plant based menus & food!
Only a few minutes in & I already love this video!
East Indian markets are a great place to buy affordable bags of beans and rice without a pricey Costco type membership.
The Mexican markets have it too! They eat them for
protein!
This is great. Please fix spelling to BUETTNER... this way people will find easier in searches.
Great work guys..
Dan is the favorite of us normal people!
Excellent advice and lentils are a great source of nutrition too!
Yes lentils are superfood. Lentils are low in sodium and saturated fat, and high in potassium, fiber, folate, and plant chemicals called polyphenols that have antioxidant activity. These nutritional properties have led researchers to study their effects on chronic diseases.
Funny to hear eating mice mentioned. Years ago a book about Canadian homesteaders had a recipe in it for “Field Mouse Casserole “ which required 6 plump field mice. Never tried it.
Don’t blame you. 😮
Shhuu🤫 Don't give the evil globalists/Eugenicists, who want us to eat bugs!
Thanks for this. 🙏🏼
Okay, I just do fasting regularly and can eat anything moderately except carbs/anything sweet.
@@CiaoCiao-ic9sf You dont need Fiber, it is indigestible and extremely inflammatory to the gut.
@@CiaoCiao-ic9sf whole grains also increases insulin and very bad as well. The different only the timing due to low glycemic index mixed with fiber, but in terms of the insulin number are the same.
You are what you eat. Your diet impacts your health.
Lower stress, reduce obesity and more exercise are key to a healthy life.
Obesity in children and adults is rising across the world.
Fast food and sugary drinks are contributing to the problem of poor health and obesity.
Eat a healthy plant based diet and exercise regularly.
Reduce or ELIMINATE cows milk, eggs, cheese and meat. Eat more salad greens, beans, fruit and vegetables. Eliminate fast food, snacks like cookies, cakes, chips, and sugary drinks and juices.
Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly.
Regular exercise will help you sleep better. Yoga is a great stress reducer.
Obesity is all too common today. Get off the couch. Get off the phone, ipad or video game.
A variety of stretching and other exercises help with increased mobility.
Ride to work, ride to school, ride for fun.
Every city should be a bicycle city.
Speak up for bicycles in your community
Agree with you with one exception. I did not eat eggs for 25 years due to high cholesterol& diabetes. Since I’ve gone on keto diet with IF with very occasional 48 hr fasting I eat 2 PASTURE RAISED chicken eggs maybe 5 times a week. I lost24 lbs the vast majority I needed to lose, reversed my diabetes and my cholesterol and CRP optimal except LDL IS 186 but this is typical for keto diets and usually it’s ok cause the vast majority or all of ldl particles are neutral non dangerous fluffy ldl and not tiny dense dangerous ldl. Will be taking the NMR lab test to look at my ldl particles for clarity. Every other numbers associated with h my health is optimal. I’m pretty confident NMR will be fine but I’m doing my due diligence even though it will cost me $100 with my lousy Medicare Advantage plan.
Agreed! Chose your meats well! Bike is free!!
PLEASE bring Anthony William #MM in the program! I would love to hear a collab between two giants in this industry! You rock Doc Human!! Thank you so Much for another absolute Gem of an interview!
Well, there's ONE piece of good news, Thank God:
Sourdough Bread isn't so bad.
I can easily give up every other kind of bread, even my favorite squishy-soft Wonder white bread, if I can have sourdough. Make that EXTRA-Sour.
Yaaay for Minnesota
Well someone else is eating the meat, refined foods and sugar for me and part of my family so would guess you have to double those bad foods for someone else. Not doing the dairy either so double it for someone else too.
@42:38 "But you can get sh- BLEEP!!-t done!" LOL!
Interesting about the billboard influence.
Almost like the subliminal advertising in the movie theatres (or drive-ins).
Idk if that's still a thing or not, but it was in the 60s.
First, and damn proud of myself.
our negative thoughts is what causes disease
And viruses
💯
Yes the way we view things has a major impact on our health. When positive thoughts are generated, when you're feeling happy, or optimistic, cortisol decreases and the brain produces serotonin, creating a feeling of well-being. Some benefits are lower rates of depression. Lower levels of distress and pain. Greater resistance to illnesses. Better psychological and physical well-being.
Are UA-cam comments and Hyman are what causes disease
Was that a box of doughnuts on Dr. Buttner's kitchen counter?
No chicken, beef, or pork??
Ookay . . . In that case, I'll have lamb, venison, elk, moose, salmon, tuna, sturgeon, trout, bass, lobster, shrimp, crab, crawdads, oysters, scallops, clams, & abalone. 😂
Two things I've heard in this presentation first is that an all natural plant-based diet is superior to the standard American diet which is basically fast food soda and corn chips. Why is it people that promote plant-based diets never compare them to people with healthy active lives that have a meat based diet but are careful to not eat processed foods not eat corn fed or factory farmed meat and only pasture raised. At least that would be an Apples to Apples comparison. Another thing I heard is that 3/4 of a million people per day die prematurely in the US because they're not eating properly and or taking care of themselves. So based on that in the next year and a half the population of America will be zero.
I don't understand.
I have cut my diet to meat and organic lettuce and some roasted vegetables 3 times a week.
It is very rare for me to eat anything else.
Even fruits and vegetables cause hard pain in my body.
He seems to be a bit off course to me.
Try Whals Protocol Diet.
Cook, that's all
Bingo❤️
life expectancy is dropped the last few years. Could being injected with some potion, that was only tested on mice before, might have something to do with it?
Bingo
What? You know all of if not most of those Blue Zone people have also had all of their vaccinations, right? Blue Zone diets don't protect you from highly communicable respiratory diseases.
Great food advise but Not their fault, Can't read a food label? Need a program to go for a walk?
Aaah...the book.
There's usually one to sell.
Or expand your granular knowledge and other strategies to help us since they can only speak to limited things in one video. Just sayin’.😉
Well everyone has to make a living so he can't do his research for free.
His books are really good. He was the first person to really go around the world and share how the healthiest people in the world live. What's wrong with him sharing his work? It's interesting and helpful.
Eat from scratch in natural form more god made less man made
More like 90%
who wants to live longer in this polluted world?
i no i dont.
It is not simply about living longer....but increasing your quality of life by being healthier. That is what the blue zones like Sardenia are really about
Go vegan for your health, whole food plant based.
Go vegan for the animals.
Go vegan for the planet.
A lower risk of heart disease and cancer for you and a better planet for everyone, human and animals.
Eating healthy is not a diet it is a healthy life style.
Vegan is terrible for your long term health ! Proven over and over. And being vegan is terrible for the planet, supports Mass agriculture using massive fertilizer and pesticide and massive amounts of water. Depletes and Poisons the soil and poison the water. Not to mention by being vegan your supporting killing thousands and thousands of small animals Birds in Mass agriculture harvesting.
The vegan diet is a disaster for human health and the environment. 80% of vegans give up their diet within five years citing catastrophic failure of health. Regenerative agriculture is the only way we can look after the land long term.
@Warrior all vegans are confused, their diet fails to feed their brains. Darwin at work
That's impossible to go Vegan for the Animals...they are burning whole forests..ELIMINATING ...Well Animals to plant soy, corn etc ...thats nota a reason tô honestly Go Vegan..thats Just lovelly Green wash 🥹🙏🏽
Vegan is not for the planet
You are responsible for your own health, don't blame the environment
Your kidding, just look what they feed our kids in school. At home they are happy with nuts fruit and veggies, we make healthy cake for the weekend, it's at school that they feed them all the garbage. and I have no sweet's at home.
So I'm responsible for Dupont Chemical poisoning our drinking water? Or could we say that's the environment our community was put in for many years until the truth was revealed
The environment effects our food .
Having a clean diet is good, but clean water, good soil, less pollution plays a part in good health too!
