  • People affected by pathologies should not do the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), unless they have the prior approval of their specialized doctor. In the case of serious or relatively serious illnesses (cancer, diabetes, or cardiovascular, autoimmune, or neurodegenerative diseases), it is important to seek permission and approval from a disease specialist as well as from a dietitian with expertise in the FMD or in therapeutic fasting. The use of the FMD for disease treatment should for the moment be limited to clinical trials unless the doctor determines that there are no viable options and the patient cannot wait until the conclusion of appropriate clinical trials and FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), and similar agencies in other countries, approval.

      i cannot recall if i fasted 2 or 3 days before the chemo. and the day of and one day after the infusion. i talked to dr. longo. i actually did a 6 hour dance performance the day after the infusion was finished. i did NOT do his protocol before my first round of full strength and did not do as well. i did chew ice during the second infusion so that also could have made a big difference. the morons did not have me chew ice during the first infusion and i got such bad mouth sores that i could not eat for 3 weeks. i could hardly talk or drink! i had to be on super strong narcotics to tolerate the pain. the second time they told me i would have worse mouth sores and i had NONE! my blood work was normal after the second round so it was safe to go back to work. i went back to work during flu season with no flu shot and many of my patients had the flu. i was working on a quarantined unit. i never got sick. i am not even sure what i fasted on. i may have done bone broth along with gatoraide and water. dr. longo will tell you if you ask him.

    On another video, Dr. Longo recommends a fasting protocol of 5 consecutive days per month, every month. On the eating days using intermittent fasting 18 hours fast, 6 hours eating window.
    While writing this I just had a thought about the before and after positions:
    *Before based on the standard diet* the fasting window is 8 hours, 16 hours eating and that is every day. This amounts to 5,840 eating hours per year or 408,800 hours per lifetime.
    *After based on the new fasting protocol* the fasting window is 18 hours, 6 hours eating and that is every day. This amounts to 2,190 eating hours per year or 153,300 hours per lifetime.
    *Meaning the body get a surplus amount of repair and cleaning time of 3,650 per year or 255,500 hours per lifetime.*
    This, of course, will have amazing positive results on the body and mind of the people able to do this in conjunction with a clean diet, who exercise and get adequate sleep.

      That's a really interesting point you made there from a sheer hours stand point. A lot of the research I've finding on IF lately has pointed to a maximum 12 hour eating window per day as being sustainable with 8-10 hour windows being much more ideal. So if you even just think of a 11 hour eating window vs a 16 hour eating window, that alone gives you 1825 hours of extra "repair and cleaning" time as you mentioned. That's the equivalent of 76 full days of healing per year.

      The problem is balancing fasting and maintaining muscle, which is important not only because of frailty but also for glucose control. I tend to think that it would be best to allow a longer eating window in the re-feeding phase to boost protein synthesis and harness the massive spike in the growth hormone and testosterone.

    • @LuIsSaNcHeZ510
      @LuIsSaNcHeZ510 3 місяці тому

      Sounds like that would limit blood glucose spikes. Some people eat high fat carnivore in a 4 hour eating window. And our bodies can produce any glucose we need through gluconeogenesis. So that keeps the blood glucose the most controlled. Basically carnivore diet puts our bodies in a “fasting state” but we have all the essential nutrients we need. It’s a bit more complicated than that but check out Dr Anthony Chaffee’s podcast with Bart Kay.

    I have always intermittent fasted only eating when i am hungry. Since my July 13 Diagnosis of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, I have upped my fasting and focus on eat foods that are lower in estrogen or inhibit the production of estrogen while regulating the foods rich in estrogen so I do not become unbalanced in the other direction. I have cut back on all meats and dairy and eat mainly veggies/fruits.
    So far I have lost 26.2 lbs (estrogen is stored in excess body fat), my tumors have already shrunk in less than a month -I feel fantastic and I get to grow my own medicine/food in my greenhouse and garden. I firmly believe in the power of fasting.

    I have been fasting for 7 days, every 3 weeks for the past 10 months. 5 days before chemo, day of chemo and 24 hours after. When not fasting, I eat low carb foods. It has helped immensely with the chemo side effects, I have had zero issues with side effects from chemo. I am still on targeted chemo and still do my every 3 week fast. I drink only water and black coffee. So far so good. I have a few issues the Drs. are watching like cysts and lesions on my liver, adrenal, and lungs, but none are growing and the Pet scans have been negative, as well as the cancer marker blood tests. I feel great. I plan to continue my fasting for 7 days every 3 weeks, even after my chemo is completed in June. I lose about 10 lbs each time, but gain it back within 1-2 weeks. I am tempted to stop, but I feel the fasting is keeping my cancer at bay, my Drs. believe the lesions are nothing because they are not growing. I am not willing to stop the fasting to find out if they will begin to grow or become active if I eat a normal diet.

None of these lesions grow after being identified. I have CT scans and MRI's every 6 months. I believe new lesions grow while I am eating and they die when I do my water fasting. The early 20th century novelist and muckraker, Upton Sinclair, wrote the book, "The Fasting Cure" and predicted within 20 years all doctors of good will, who cared most about their patients than making money off of them, would be singing the praises of fasting.
    That was in the 1911!!

    My wife fasted for 48 hours prior to her first round of chemotherapy after researching Dr Longo's work. I was nervous how she would respond to the chemo, like anyone is when sailing unchartered waters. Her response? Practically zero side effects. I was astonished. In fact, I was so astonished I was paranoid the chemo may not have been working as it should. Even after just 1 round, her headaches (she has large brain mets from lung cancer) have gone away, and the oncologist at our recent appointment was surprised and excited at the initial response. I believe fasting puts cancer cells in a vulnerable state giving the chemo a chance to melt it away. They need to, given the size of the brain mets. We still have a way to go, but its key research like this that gives us a fighting chance. Thank you to Dr Longo and his team.

      @jasonjohnson5408 Рік тому +6

      Thank you Laura for reaching out. You realise how many people are going through the same when you share online. I would like to share with you some further findings since my post. I strongly recommend doing IV Vitamin C the day prior to your chemo session. It can be an even more effective form of chemotherapy but without the side effects. Combine it with traditional chemotherapy (i expect you will be put on carboplatin + etoposide), as well as fasting. Chemotherapy stops cell division and induces cell death of standard cancer cells but it does not get at the cancer stem cell. It's good at killing the plant (tumours) but not the roots (stem cell). Chemotherapy rarely cures because it always leaves behind chemo-resistant stem cells, which multiply and it comes back. IV vitamin C can kill stem cells. Has to be IV because it has to be in big enough quantities in the blood to produce a pro-oxidant effect (chemotherapy is pro-oxidant too). Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant in small doses (it can actually inhibit chemo's effects), but high enough it's pro-oxidant. Taking vit c orally raises levels to a max of 220mols/litre of blood, liposomal vitamin c raises to 320mols/litre, whereas IV can raise to 12000-15000mols/litre. Start your fast 40 hrs prior to your chemo, then try to fit two IV Vitamin C sessions 24 hours and a 2nd up to 6 hours prior. It will utterly annihilate the cancer. You must seek at least 50g or higher per IV vitamin C treatment. Good luck

      Hi Jason! Where do you get the vitamin IV done? Conventional oncologists don't do this, right? Tia 🙂

    • @jasonjohnson5408
      @jasonjohnson5408 Рік тому +6

      @@VFEdge They don't and the clue is in the word, conventional. I'm in the UK and whilst doctors can prescribe drugs for off label use "where there is evidence" - the problem with IV C is that whilst there is some evidence, it doesn't meet their very high thresholds to make them feel comfortable enough to not get sued, yes the reality is a doctor cares more about his career than one patient's survival out of 1000's he will be caring for. Secondly the reason there is not more evidence is because there is no financial incentive for the big pharma to go and search for said evidence via bigger clinicial trials etc, IVC cannot be patented. But it doesn't mean the scientific theory isn't there. Unfortunately the above reasoning is used by quacks to justify practically any alternative treatment where there is literally no scientific evidence at all, let alone a basis scientific theory behind it. In IVC's case there is both. In terms of where to get administered, I can only speak with regards the UK, there's a place in Birmingham called Newhall Medical Practice that are able to get it done and very cost effective compared to London practices. It is actually as much a health/beauty practice that normally administer low dose IVC (up to 8g) for health boost reasons, but they are happy to administer high dose if requested. It's run by a husband and wife duo (mainly the wife) who are both qualified GP's, the husband is actually still a very senior consultant for main NHS hospital in Birmingham. They do require the oncologist to say they are fine with the high IV dosage and a G6PD deficiency test needs to be done (GP Surgeries can do the G6PD upon a private doctor request, or if needed it can be done privately for £120.) I've seen evidence to say to take IVC after Chemo is more effective than before. Our issue is the Oncologist has said it can only be done before.

    Fasting (and Autophagy)
    Nobel Laureate Yoshinori Ohsumi was rewarded for his discoveries of mechanisms underlying autophagy, a fundamental process for degrading and recycling cellular components.
    The word autophagy originates from the Greek words auto-, meaning “self”, and phagein, meaning “to eat”. Thus, autophagy denotes “self-eating”. This concept emerged during the 1960s when researchers first observed that the cell could destroy its own contents by enclosing it in membranes, forming sack-like vesicles that were transported to a recycling compartment, called the lysosome, for degradation.

    I am still fasting, for 7 years now. My cancer did return to stage 4 in 2022. I believe it returned because my cancer spread immediately after 11 needle core biopsies that pulverized my original tumors, there were 2. I took a drug (Arimidex) an anti-hormone drug that essentially put my cancer to sleep before my chemotherapy. 4 years passed and I was put on a growth hormone, for a hypopituitary issue which 5 months later woke up those cancer cells that spread to my lungs. I had surgery to remove all 5 cancer lesions. Lost 20% of my lungs when I had the lung resections. I was told the cancer is now systemic and that it will just come back. They did not want me to have the lung surgeries, but I prevailed and had them. They said I would now have chemo for the rest of my life. I did chemo for 1 1/2 years every other week, and I fasted every other week. I have CT scans every 3 months, and no evidence of cancer has returned. They claim it is because of the chemo. On October 25 2023 I stopped all treatment, except my fasting and I am still cancer-free, The next scan will be on March 11. I believe my chemo, my growth hormone (they also wanted me to stop this, but I prevailed and still taking it daily), and my fasting have cured me. I still fast 7-10 days every month even though I am not on chemo. My doctors are all aware of my fasting and support me.

      @@karthis5017 , I had surgery for my original bilateral IDC stage 2 breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy and lymph node dissection in March 2017. Cancer was diagnosed in March 2017. I have been fasting ever since, at least 7 days per month, and sometimes 7 days twice a month. Nothing has returned in my breasts, I had them removed. It did return in March of 2022 in my lungs. After surgery to remove all those tumors, I was on chemo again every other week for 1 1/2 years until Oct 2023. That was when I was fasting much more. I fast 5 days before chemo and until 24 hours after. The cancer that returned to my lungs in 2022 was a reoccurrence of breast cancer. I have been fasting now since May 2017-current, almost 7 years now.

    Disclaimer, I'm not criticising just enquiring. Im just thinking that maybe its a mistake to think of killing the cancer as with chemo etc. But it more to do with changing the cell messaging (which is not visible) as with fasting, which kick starts and which alters the body's internal environment. Because as Dr T Seyfried says cancer is a metabolic disease.

    The one thing we know is that the small intestine is empty during fasting, amd that is sheds ephitelial cells incredibly fast, and that that's the only way to remove iron from the body. There's also an ancient paper that has found that during fasting, the mammalian body mobilizes stored tissue iron and loads it into these epithelial cells to be sloughed off.
    So during fasting the body detoxifies itself of iron, which is a main risk factor in cancer.

    I think it is great hearing about people leveraging these ideas for cancer. I would suggest theraputic keto before fast then when fasting starts the patient will go right in ketosis. Two days fasting before chemo, then 1 day fasting after. On refeed, go back to the keto diet. maybe make it a triple whammy with high doses of vitamin c. the cancers think the vitamin c is glucose and gums up the cancer. HBOT combined with fasting would be another way, skip chemo.

      @@miteshjain3561 It took me about six months of studying and self experimentation.
      The person who was the most helpful for me was Dr Annette Bosworth's you tube videos and her book, Any Way you can.
      The key processes are firstly reducing carbohydrates and increasing fat consumption. This is described as becoming 'fat adapted', when the cells of the body become 'used to' using fat to generate energy.
      Once I was able to do this, it became easier for me to fast. Starting by eating later in the mornings, and earlier in the afternoon.
      I have found that if I have a cup of green tea at 4pm, I'm less likely to become hungry in the evening and can manage to wait for breakfast next day.
      During this time, my weight went down 10kg and I felt better in many different ways.
      I was then able to do longer fasts, up to 36hrs, 42hrs, and 48hrs, while checking my Glucose and Ketone levels and recording them.
      Dr Bosworth has a spreadsheet to record everything, so that she can see at a glance, how the person is getting on.
      I became used to producing increased levels of ketones, and lower glucose levels.
      And then one morning, I achieved the magic glucose to ketone ratio of One.
      My Glucose level was very low by ordinary standards, ( 2.7mmol/L(48.6mg/dL) and ketones more than 2mmol/L).
      It becomes necessary to be extremely careful at this stage of the proceedings.
      I am a retired GP in England, and I suppose that I may be slightly better in understanding everything than the 'Average Person'. It isn't too complicated, but understanding everything, and being able to put it into practice took me a while.
      If I had had a 'Coach' or a 'Mentor' who was 'versed' in all of this, I am sure that it could have been done much more quickly.....
      Hope that this helps, and stay safe...

    • @QSing999
      @QSing999 7 років тому +8

    • @sphinx333
      @sphinx333 7 років тому +10

      Yes, thats right. I am currently in my 3rd fasting cycle of 5 days - The first time was the toughest: not only staggering headaches but excruciating back and hip pain for pretty much the entire time. COuldn't sleep at night, couldn't stand, couldn't sit - it was really hard to carry on. In his book he says this is all normal especially during the first cycle. I endured and completed the 5 days. Did it again a few months later and, much to my surprise, not a glimpse of pain. Nothing. It was a lot easier and although I was very hungry, I managed to complete. Now I am doing it again and I'm half way through.
      Based on my experience as a fit, healthy and vegan person with no health issues, I must say i highly recommend the fast mimicking diet. On top of all the internal benefits one has in terms of cells regeneration, the amount of energy after the 5 days is incredible. To be fair, the first day back to normal I felt very tired, but apparently thats normal because the body is literally receiving nourishment again and building all the cell it destroyed during fasting. The following days, however, the sense of wellbeing and energy is great. Also, something that shocked me was the luminosity of my skin after each cycle. As I said, my diet is always very clean as a vegan, but believe you me, fasting has regenerated my skin beyond any expectations. The last thing I noticed is some weight loss which, in my case, did not really happen while I was fasting, but gradually in the following weeks. Nothing drastic, I'm talking a couple of KGs.
      In my experience, the only cons I can highlight is he loss of quite a bit of muscle. You may not really mind - most people don't- but I work out regularly and have a good sense of my body, what it looks like and changes it goes through, and I could notice considerable loss of muscle around the arm and abdomen especially. I.e. your six pack may suffer a little :-)

      Hi, I'm also vegan, and I have never added salt or lemon to my water. You hear several of these little advices, but none of them are in the book. Re.feeling tired, I think that by day 3 or 4 it is normal to feel with no energy especially in the second part of the day. What I have noticed though is also a greater sense of wellbeing and mental clarity, probably also due to the fact that I personally sleep much better when I'm fasting. Hang in there, it'll be over soon! Very lucky that you aren't suffering from back pain or headache! These to me were a lot more exhausting to deal with than hunger. Good luck!

      I would NEVER recommend anyone NOT take a treatment their doctor is recommending. That is exclusively their choice.
      That said, my doctor has recommended I have my prostate removed because he found two very small, very slow growing cancers from my biopsy. My Gleeson score is 6. I will get a second opinion but I doubt I will be getting a prostatectomy anytime soon. Especially since my PSA has been high for over ten years and I've started fasting. We'll see if I'm making the right decision. Eventually.

    I am not a candidate for any of the following; patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis who do not qualify for surgical cytoreduction but suffer from the effects of malignant ascites, intraperitoneal chemotherapy can be safely and effectively administered via laparoscopic techniques. Short operative times, short hospital stays, low complication rates and ultimately symptomatic relief are the advantages of laparoscopically administering heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy, making it not only a valuable treatment modality but also the most successful treatment modality for in achieving palliative cure of malignant ascites.
    The presence of malignant ascites is a grave prognostic sign. While survival in this patient population is poor, averaging about 20 wk from time of diagnosis, in quality of life can be improved through palliative procedures[2]. Currently no effective anti-tumor therapy exists for peritoneal carcinomatosis. This is what I am dealing with right now. I am wondering if fasting will help me live longer.

    I've come to believe most of the diseases we get as we age are metabolic. Fasting is a heavy medicine for fixing metabolic issues, so it follows that it would have a positive effect on the mitigation of cancer. I certainly wouldn't wait around for a bunch of researchers to confirm; fasting is easy, so I would use it regardless. Nothing to lose if you're otherwise dying.

    It's mind-boggling how a learned person can consider his species so much more important than animals that he/she is able to give animals one of the worst diseases ever and watch the animals suffer day after day until they die. The ego is impressive in its ability to make a person lie to him/herself about the immorality of their job day after day whilst they continue making other beings really sick and observe the consequences. The human ego is derangedly impressive.
    Some sage said: "Humans think of themselves as the top species, the most important one! But humans is the only species on Earth that if we were to go extinct, the planet would be better-off".

    Not sure what people think fasting is.
    The correct fasting is as per Allah Ta'ala'a prescription - zero intake, nothing, nada, from dawn till sunset, during Ramadan. Additional option, every Monday and/or Thursday, or, every second day.
    He Says (regarding Ramadan) "if you're sick then you don't have to fast, but if you fast it is better for you, ONLY IF YOY KNEW"
    Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu-alaihi-wasallam said two words on this matter. "Suumuu, tasuhhuu" meaning "fast, and you will regain/attain good health"
