One of the most underrated channels ever
Very kind words.
Holy shit, yes! Been waiting for a new video ever since I found your channel a few months ago!
I bit busier these days but I'll do my best to keep the videos coming.
I remember when I was maybe 14 and I first picked up killzone. I hated the fact the weapons felt 'heavy'. But as I played through I ended up feeling it immersed me into the combat much more. Similar to BLACK on the PS2 you really felt you were carrying body armour and slinging huge amounts of lead at the enemy. It forced you to play a bit more slowly and use cover, which isn't a bad thing IMO.
I was glad they kept the feel of it consistent on killzone 2 and 3 and I loved all of them.
i can still remember playing this game like it was yesterday, loved the campaign and playing as that stealth chick with alternate flank routes and sometimes fun to run around as Rico with the heavy chaingun to mix it up, beautiful maps like that one with the pink leaves cherry blossom trees, i'm pretty sure it was on hardest difficulty i once beat it on bcz that last mission i just died over and over trying to complete it lol
Something worth mentioning is that the game was re-released on the PlayStation 3 digitally and as a part of the Killzone Trilogy. Keep in mind that if you want a digital copy, this is your last chance to buy it as the PlayStation 3 Digital Store will be permanently closed as of this July.
Such a shame what they're doing to the PS Store.
I downloaded this on the PS3 store recently. I was impressed with the improvements they made to it. Made it more enjoyable to play . Thanks for the review
I'd be interested to try that version.
Hey!, nice to see you back, and don't worry about you sounding harsh on a game, it was your experience and it will vary for each person.
Killzone is a game series i just know it exists, i didn't even remember (or probably didn't know) it was on the PS2, i'll keep an eye out for it.
It's certainly worth experiencing. I liked 2 & 3 much better though.
InstaBlaster...
Recently found your channel and was bummed that you hadn't uploaded in five months. Glad you're back!
Glad to hear you enjoy my stuff. Appreciate the support 👍🏽
Love the killzone series. I wish you could map out controls on the second and third game like you can on this one
Excellent review! This game was really impressive for the PS2 hardware.
Thank you.
Very nice to see a new video from you!
It's great to finally put something out again.
Already working on my next video now, hope to have it soon.
YEAH! Love your retrospective review, keep them coming!
I'll do my best.
Welcome back! This was a game you played mainly for the action, the story just gave you a reason for the said action. Luger was one of my favorites to play as not just cause she was good a sneak attacks but also she kinda broke the mold for lady gaming characters at that time. She was pretty cool but by no means a "babe" so to speak. I thought that was a welcome change for a game at that time.
I also liked Hacker and I enjoyed his dialogue towards the end of the game, there's a great scene that I won't spoil where he is talking to the main villain and gives this nice dialogue about our differences. This game had tons of hype on it's release. When I picked it up, I liked it but didn't think it was anything grand. Much like you, I liked it but didn't love it. Same with it's sequels....I like them, but I don't love them. They are good enough for a playthrough or two.
Almost forgot to mention....I found it hilarious how when you change characters, they express annoyance at you. Templar frowns at you or Luger rolls her eyes or Rico scowls and pouts at you. I found that really funny.
I think if the hype around it at the time wasn't so big, it would've been received much better.
Really pleased to see you back
Glad to be back
Pretty much agreed with you. Looks fantastic and has the components to be great, but the shooting feels off and I think the game's technical issues have to do with that. The games would improve dramatically with KZ2 though!
Great review, glad to see you back!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt this way.
great review...finally an honest channel i can subscribe to.
Funnily enough I actually just started a new channel yesterday. You can see my latest video for info.
fair review . this game is so much fun i remember me and my sister played the multiplayer a lot
I still need to finish this, but from what I've played I agree with you entirely. Great review mate
Happy to hear that I'm not the odd one out.
Well well well look who is back haha love have you back man your Channel was a big part of my life before the world got mad remainds me of the good times
Well that is a tremendous compliment. I've been a big busy of late, but I'm doing my best to get some more videos out. Working on my next review right now.
I loved this game. It was the first PS2 game I actually finished...and played a second time. Each to their own though.
Killzone is not a tight feeling shooter in the vein of Call of Duty, but it has a focused design that makes for some of the best atmosphere you'll ever find in a shooter. It's one of those games that's probably best played as you turn the lights off, crank the TV, and lock in.
It has its charm.
I made several purchases based off of ur reviews, Cold Fear in particular
Glad I could help you find some new games.
that was the first "death stranding" experience we had with this love/hate relationship, if only they managed to balance the animation with the gameplay it would be a complete masterpiece, yet god damn good memories (: still worth checking out the PS3 HD version tbh.
That animation does look great, which is the biggest shame because it gets in the way.
@@RetroGameRater yes, they are too heavy :C
This review bring me back to my past
Always my aim.
I agree with everything you say, but it was one of the best of it’s time.
Welcome back!
Thank you.
You chose one of my fave games to come back Great
as im making this comment im playing killzone, and i really love it! what i love about it, its that the graphics are great! especially that its made in 2004.the thing i love the most are the npcs in offline mode, they seem like real players, what do i mean? well one time i was playing it and i saw a minigun and there was a camper. and they know shelter is a real thing and they always spin around trying to confuse the enemies!
For all its flaws I still liked the game at the time. Nice vid from you as per, thanks.
Glad you had a good time with the game.
I played Killzone HD on the PS3 recently and had a very similar experience. Controls felt janky and just really took me out of the experience. I wanted to like the game but just couldn't.
Great video man!
Good to know I wasn't the only one.
Awsome dude
Thanks.
100% agree, this game feel so heavy, but not always in a good way (those sequences with the machine gun or the sniper are atrocious to play)
It's been really interesting seeing the response to this review so far, I really did think I'd be the odd one out with my opinion on this title.
Good review! Where have you been lately, Mr Rater?
Thanks.
My wife gave birth in November so I've been focused on Dad stuff.
Trying to get some more videos out now though.
@@RetroGameRater fair dos, Mr Rater. Take care of your child in addition to reviewing games!
Perhaps this would have benefited from being a launch title for the PS3 instead.
Missed you bruh 🤘👌
I'll do my best to have more videos soon.
@@RetroGameRater life gets busy it's all good 😁
It was a solid 1st attempt but Killzone 1 was definitely held back by its PS2 hardware. Killzone 2 is everything Killzone 1 couldn't be and honestly the best entry in the franchise in my opinion.
Miss the days of the Halo Killer competition. We got a lot of fun FPS games that weren't just indie knock offs of Doom/Quake like today.
"Solid 1st attempt" is the perfect summary.
I like Killzone 2 more in a general sense, but Killzone 3 is better from a gameplay standpoint. It's just nicer to play, to shoot and everything. Though they've completely wasted the atmosphere and the aesthetic
Never played this one, but I like second game a lot. Guess I'll check KZ3 rather.
I enjoyed KZ2 & 3, felt like they got the chance to work out some of the issues with the first game.
Hi there! Try to find the Kiillzone Trilogy Collection for the PS3; it comes with a great HD version of the first Killzone + 2 & 3 in one package.
@@arioca Hey Arioca, didn't know they publish trilogy. Will search for that than, thanks for the info!
I really enjoyed KZ3. Definitely give it a try.
@@Bole_ZG You're welcome. It came out in Europe, Australia, and the US. Here's the link: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps3/682635-killzone-trilogy/images
It's a shame really because Killzone literally pushed the the PS2 hardware to it's limits , i feel like they should of made it for the PS3 instead of the PS2. Overall I'd personally say i've play throught single player multiple times and it's rather enjoyable but If you want a tony bit more challenge I recommend you putting it on The hard difficulty because it feels like a different game and it's actually more engaging to pass levels I feel.
I was very hyped for this game and Halo 2 back in 2004, thought both were great in their own way.
I can certainly see myself enjoying this more back then. Never got around to it because I was into Xbox Live quite a bit at the time.
dont know what your talking about, this game is great . love every beat of it
Glad you enjoyed it.
It surely looked great, but in exchange of framerate, in any big stages like this cherry garden it had like 10-15fps
One thing that made Killzone age badly imo is the framerate. I replayed it a few years ago and I forgot how low it was.
It does seem to struggle with everything that's happening on screen.
Killzone was ok at best. Definitely was way short of being the "Halo Killer" it was touted to be. I was let down by it when it came out and last time I tried to go back to give it a fair shake again I found it a bit painful to play but I can appreciate what they were trying to get a PS2 to do.
Agreed.
You reviewed this AFTER 'Black', and still seemed to imply that 'KillZone' is better looking ?
I’m going to blunt when I say this, but I really hated playing this game. The gunplay and controls felt terrible; specifically, the guns were horribly inaccurate, dealt inconsistent damage, and no dynamic crosshair means the bullets never seem to go where I thought they would. Combine this with there being absolutely no aim assist whatsoever (which I’m surprised you didn’t mention in the review), goofy control oddities like the sniper rifle’s crosshair floating around when you move and then snapping back to the middle when you let go of the stick, weapon switching being delayed to show a weapon readying animation, and the extremely low, jumpy frame rate just make the basic act of shooting a stressful - and often angering - experience.
According to several reviewers who researched the game’s development, Killzone wasn’t originally meant to be a ‘Halo killer’ or even a AAA game at all; Guerrilla conceived it as a budget title. When Sony picked up the game and saw the success of Halo, they moved it up to AAA status despite it not being conceived as one, pushing and hyping the game as often as they could. I think it’s safe to say Guerrilla had a disappointing start with both this and Shellshock: Nam ‘67, which was their other game in 2004.
No matter how good the other bits are, if the shooting isn't good, the rest of the experience is dampened.
Yeah the aiming is a bit tricky but I wouldn't say it's the worse game I've played or of all time. Once you get used to the aiming I'd say gameplay wise it's average at best
Odd, I felt the exact opposite on the weapons. They all felt weak and sometimes downright insignificant. Every standard enemy takes almost a whole clip to take down. That combined with the sluggish aiming really ruined the game for me. The weapons are the star of an FPS and when they don't deliver, then the game just isn't good.
Controls were clunky as fuck.
I played the 'hd' version on PS3 a couple of years ago... Average at best. No.2 is much better. Where is the music in gameplay? I thought the version I was playing was broken at first.
It is oddly quiet during the gameplay.
Rating: 4/5
I played this maybe a year ago and I enjoyed the first few levels and then it got to the level where you are on the beaches and it honestly just got so repetitive bland and boring and It’s honestly one of the most boring first person shooters especially on the ps2. Also the shooting just feels kind of pants and the shotgun is awful! GreAt video as always :)
All the right pieces but they just don't fit quite right.
@@RetroGameRater yeah that’s definitely it! 2 steps forward and 1 back type situation glad it was only a £1 game though tbh
Hello bro you super
As someone who enjoys this series in general I must say that the first game is terrible and I can't comprehend how it got a sequel, although I'm glad it did cause the next games are really good. And no, this isn't because it's a PS2 game or even because of its low frame performance pushing the PS2 to its knees. It's a 2004 console shooter, there were other shooters from what they could learn a lot like Timesplitters, Medal of Honor, COD and Halo but things like gunplay and even moving around the levels feels akward and sluggish.
Ah yes, the putative Halo killer! Xbox players really had nothing to worry about in the end
The funny thing was, It wasn't PlayStation or the developer that called it the Halo Killer, that was completely driven by fans and put too much pressure on the game to perform at the same level.
@@RetroGameRater Actually I talked to a journalist about this back in 2006, and apparently at E3 2004, when questioned about "Killzone vs. Halo", Sony called it literally a "Halo-killer", only to backtrack from this post-launch. When it was apparent Halo 2 outscored Killzone in the ratings and sales figures, they started saying "We're doing our own thing"
To add on a couple of things that you said in the review though:
1) The sloggish motion and accuracy was done intentionally to invoke a sense of realism. Players were intended to try to single-shot or fire in short bursts, instead of aiming at the enemy and firing until the enemy goes down.
2) Of the 4 playable characters, Hakha is by far the most powerful one since he is not only more accurate than the other players with most weaponry in-game, but his general stats are also superior to the "all-round" character of Templar. Although Killzone favors the "defense","health" and "regen" stats heavily on higher difficulties, the guy who has the highest of it (Rico), is also pretty immovable and only useful with his base HMG. Personally, I find Luger useless altogether, since her accuracy is terrible AND she dies after only taken a few hits on the highest difficulty, which is horrendous for a game without any decent amount of checkpoints.
Still, glad to see you've been able to play this game, and I think the developers agreed with your assessment given the route Killzone 2 took. :)
Great response.
Interesting to know how all of that stuff got started.
I think xbox players should worry about 343 industries they are real halo killer, lol
