With its manual configuration, you can get started right away and add hydraulic attachments as your milling needs grow. Plus, when you're ready, upgrading to a fully hydraulic system means your sawmill can handle more of the heavy work, letting you mill for longer periods of time.
Assembling your own sawmill can also be a great way to get to know your machine and become a pro sawyer. But if you ever have questions when assembling or operating your Norwood sawmill, feel free to contact us. We're here to help.

Doing fine. Just sawed a bunch of 2x4s to frame up a new building I'm putting up. Also Dave I noticed on my HD36 when I lock the log dog in tight it raises the cant up off the bunk on the side of the dog. If I leave it loose enough that it doesn't, then dog will fall out during the cut. Is something wrong with dogs, they both do it?

@@woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc Thanks for your question. I haven't noticed this problem. Does it do this on a big cant or when you just have one or two boards left to cut? You might try having the cam handle about half way down when you ram it into the cant, so it doesn't move the spike so far in. It is great to have full range of travel when it is going into bark but, especially with hardwoods, it is hard-- and unnecessary-- to start with the cam handle all the way up. It might also help to leave the last 4 or 5 boards on the cant after you saw them so there is as much weight as possible holding it down. Hope this helps. I wonder if it would help to grind a sharper edge on the clamp.

Thanks for the comment. The hydraulics definitely make the job easier, and make it possible to tackle logs I might otherwise have passed over.

      Good day Ronald Stevens,
Thank you for your message and for expressing your appreciation for Dave's videos on sawmilling. Dave is indeed very passionate about his work, and it shows in his videos.
Regarding your question about the sawmill engine size, Dave and I agree that the choice between the 18 and 23 horsepower motors depends on what you plan to cut with your sawmill. If you're going to be cutting large logs or hardwoods that require a lot of power, the 23hp motor might be a better choice. However, if you're going to be cutting mostly softwoods or smaller logs, the 18hp motor might be sufficient.
I recommend that you give the team at Norwood a call, as they can help you assess your needs and recommend the best engine size for your specific situation.
I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best in your sawmilling adventures.

To add to Norwood's response, the 23 hp was the best option for me. I live in hardwood country (oak, hickory, walnut, maple, and sycamore), and saw logs that push the mill to its limits in terms of size. I've never wished I had a smaller engine. The 18 hp will work through the big logs, but it'll just take longer.

Great video. Have you ever used a green line laser module for alignment ?

I've not used a laser line on the mill. It would probably work well in a shed where it is shaded. I think, after a while you develop a pretty good eye for alignment. If you do use one, I'd be interested in hearing how it works for you.
