  • On this channel, you’ve seen and heard me smilingly rant my way through the trials (my view) and tribulations of my Norwood HD36.
Well - now they’ve done it. Norwoods Generation 2 electronic circuitry, wiring harness, and wireless controller have me smiling big time. I’m ecstatic to report my view of this enhancement.

I do indeed! And there were those little surprises - one of which I failed to mention (I'm finding that there are three points I want to get across and invariably miss one of them.)
The sawhead raise and lower is also controlled by the powerfeed variable speed controller - which is what contributes to being able to hit that 1/16th of an inch adjustment the first time every time.

I got the wireless remote when i got my hd 38, and you are right it is awesome.. well mostly.. mine kept blowing fuses and didnt want to raise right. It always acted slow when raising. I ended up blowing so many fuses, it messed up the circuit board on the receiver. So i had to send it in and they fixed or replaced it. Its supposed to be coming in tomorrow. The weird thing is, the power up/down that comes with the hd38 standard, had way more power than wireless setup. Apparently, they also changed some parts, since i got one of the earliest hd 38's. They sent me a replacement for the pieces the cable wraps around. They one that originally came with the mill had a heavy taper, which probably caused it to try and raise and lower too fast, and that made the motor that controls the up/down to be under powered. I cant wait to get it put back on!
1 thing i noticed about your video, you say setworks in the title. That isnt the setworks, its just the wireless pendant for the power sawhead. The setworks is fully automated and sets the cut for you. Im hoping to get it soon. Its another 960$ add-on, if you already have the power feed. If you dont its 3k$ i think.
    Great video!

Huge thanks for the setworks clarification. I grew up around production level sawmills that always had automatic setworks, and so adopted that phraseology (incorrectly) across any setting device. Your definition is the correct one.
I do haver the power feed, so thanks to your suggestion will explore the setworks option.
Sorry you had issues with version 1. Here's wishing you better outcomes and results with the replacement.
Thank you for tuning in and for your contribution to my journey!

I've been way too busy lately - feeling kinda like I've got two full-time jobs. But we are indeed getting some projects close to completion.

    Good morning Howard!
I so enjoy your discussion of the technical aspects of using the sawmill. Mine is still likely not coming until later this year, However, I'm keeping a lot of notes and learning so much from your experiences! By the way, I love that hooded jacket you have on!💪👍

I'm soooo stoked about your mill arriving later this year. I learn a ton from every build and set-up experience that I hear about. PS - that is my favourite work jacket - so much so that you should not be surprised to see me wearing in the middle of summer.🤣🤣🤣

Great review, thank you for the hands on analysis and showcasing Norwood's innovation (and customer/technical service). I've been considering the power feed, this is very helpful. As to your question/thought about the sawhead's ability to travel faster now, it's technically possible that the new circuitries have better control of the motor and it's able to perform to its potential.
I don't believe I asked you about this before (shame on me), have you looked into specialty blades for sawing through frozen wood? I know it's not really the time of year to be thinking about it now, perhaps for next winter though. I switched to what's called a "frost notch" band and saw an incredible difference.
As always, thank you for the information and detail. Good to see you enjoying yourself and making progress

Oh wow - I had never heard of a frost notch blade. I may just have to relinquish my membership from either the sawmill community or as a citizen of the Great White North. hahaha.
I'm definitely going to look into that. Do you have a supplier name you can share?
One thing I forgot to mention in this video when talking about the improved ease of setting the sawhead with precision. During that function the speed of sawhead lift and descent is controlled by the same speed control used for the power feed.
      Pretty cool.

@@howardkettner no worries on relinquishing your membership, I heard/read about them for the first time not even a year ago 🤣 A fellow sawyer told me about them and recommended DW Bands in Pennsylvania. He's tried many brands and believes theirs are the best. They're an Amish family run business and you can tell they take pride in their work. The quality is superb, cut quality is awesome and they aren't just for frozen wood; they'll cut through knots and anything hard without breaking a sweat. The bands themselves were only $17 each when I ordered, shipping to Upstate/Western New York was $15 - not sure what it'd be to get them to you and if it would be worth it. The only downside is that because of the "notch" below the tooth, they need a special sharpening stone, or a special cam for the drag sharpener. They sell sharpening equipment, or you can send back to them and have them sharpened for $7.50 each, again not sure if that'd be worth it though. Let me know if you need help getting a hold of them.
And thanks for sharing that bit of info about the sawhead up/down speed being controlled by the carriage speed control. That was a nifty move by Norwood. It seems like they are making a conscious effort to streamline/simplify their products these days, that's one of the reasons I decided to buy their mill.

David Wilmot typing - discussing portable sawmills on UA-cam is not where I would have guessed we might reconnect! I've got an off-road, off-grid camp in northern Ontario and I've been investigating portable mills for a couple of years. Your experience has further solidified my feeling that this is not for the faint of heart (and I'm faint of heart). Good to see you, the hat gave you away.

Wow! Dave, sooooo cool. I need to hear more about the camp. It sounds fantastic!
Don't be discouraged about buying a sawmill because anything I've said. One can get started with a basic sawmill, no hydraulics, having someone else sharpen the blades, etc., all for a very reasonable cost, with minimal upkeep. It's a ton of fun, and might be a very useful piece of equipment as you grow or maintain the camp. Nothing like a custom cut piece of wood to add character and uniqueness to that repair or reno.
Would love to stay in touch.

Hey there Howard! This is Melodi from Williams Lake --we have just bought an island in the wilderness of BC and we also bought a Norwood mill this week! It seems as though you are happy with it - I'll have to watch your other videos to see the process... we are excited about it - hydraulics etc... delivery in the Spring!! Yay!!! @@natural4lifemiss Sadly, I did not do my first UA-cam video until about four months after the build of the Norwood HD36 was completed. However, if you bump into any challenges, or just want some photos of what hydraulic hoses go where, or how certain pieces are placed, just shoot me an email to howard.kettner@gmail.com, and I'll take some photos.
I had some serious challenges with my hydraulic pump and engine combination. After mounting, it literally would not start.
I took the engine off - intending to take it to a small engine repair shop to shave it checked out, and after dismounting it gaving it one last crank, and it fired up beautifully. Long story, but at the end of the day, the mounting plate is less than a robust piece of construction, and the driveline to the pump was binding. If I had been able to start it, it would have been hours to pump or engine bearing failure.
After I reinforced and compensated for the plate deflection by installing 1/4" shims, I finally had a working hydraulic system.

Have you had any issue with the throttle and water working but the horizontal and vertical movement not? Mine does this and will only beep.

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  2 роки тому

Yeah - for sure. Identical. Norwood may be able to share the test protocol they stepped me through at the time, but basically that exact situation confirmed that my circuit board was blown for reasons unknown. Cost me $2,000 Canadian to replace - albeit with the new improved wireless version.
in the meanwhile Norwood sent me a controller ($200) that allowed me to raise and lower the sawhead. I continued using the existing 'box' and controller for throttle/water flow control - and manually pushed the sawhead down the track.
Not ideal, but it was what it was. I suspect that despite this seeming to be a prevalent issue, Norwood will do nothing by way of price break or otherwise to assist with what seems to be a systemic issue related to a design or manufacturing flaw.
As a result I can only hope that they will suffer the well justified loss of reputation. Super short-sighted thinking on their part. I wish I could say it differently.
