Thank you Megan, glad you enjoyed it ✌ great pick ups with those species! My next purchase might be some Calicos, wouldn't mind the long fins! Good luck with your fish mate!
I breed mine at 27C in a 60 gallon community tank I keep in a grow tent. My male likes to let her in right around every full moon. They seem to vastly prefer bug bites over super green repashi. I don’t do water changes, no stem plants, lava stone capped with black sand. I seem to get about 50 every month from a single pair. I use plant watering spikes but the male prefers a unique piece of wood to spawn. I use 24 hour grow light full surface covered in frogbit. During a move they spawned at room temp in a pressure cooker pot in my counter
That's really fantastic to hear! I am very glad you found the videos helpful and that you have had good success because of them! Congrats on your spawns mate!
Thank you for the video. It has been helpful. I am currently the proud surrogate mother of about 50 Bristlenose babies. Mum and dad were both albinos. So it looks like all my babies are too. The first male I had, didn't like looking after his eggs. He is the father of my current babies. Someone kicked the eggs out and I managed to get most of the eggs into a separate tank. They are now ravenous and healthy babies. My new male (the father died) and my albino female have had some eggs together. The other female kicked them out I think, because the male was guarding them and the eggs got kicked out overnight. Couldn't get them hatch. My current babies are few weeks old and growing. It's helpful to know to do more frequent water changes to help them grow faster.
Not a problem mate, glad it was helpful. Congratulations on your new Bristlenose babies! Oh ok eggs getting kicked out and sometimes be from a competing female who wants to spawn with the male. Not, always the case as immature males can also sometimes do this but if you have more than two or more females in there with one male then that can sometimes happen. It is a shame you didn't get a chance to try save the other clutch of eggs but it sounds like you will have lots more Bristlenose again soon! Yeah water changes are the key to growing them fast. But that does go for most species of fish as well. Good luck with your future spawns!
Thanks heaps David, really appreciate it. No sorry, unfortunately I have never kept them. But they are beautiful fish! Would definitely like to give them a go one day though!
In my tank mate I have 4 f 1m and I didn’t know about resting the fish you may have saved my breeder super red male thanks very much!!!they are running this male ragged vital information mate!🙂👍🏻
Hello i have 5 blue eyes lemon bristlenose got them small about 5cm ..in a community tank with angelfish and tetra in a 5 feet tank..will these maybe form a pair from them? Still small..at what age they mature?
Great video, congratulations and thanks for share your experiences, in you opinion, what would be the best cave dimentions? and if do you think a PVC pipe would work. Thanks
Not a problem mate. It depends on the size of your male. Just as long as he can block the entrance with his body will be good. PVC will work. Just cap one end off or if you don't want to get an end cap, just use a heat gun to weld one end shut. Hope that helps.
Excellent video! My male and female bred only once (November) and haven't since. He seems to bully her so she stays away. Really unfortunate because they made some beautiful fry. Hopefully they start again 🤞
Thank you for that! I hope they spawn again for you soon. Bristlenose do go through phases with their spawning. Sometimes they spawn every month for a few months. Then have a break for a while. Could be why yours stopped.
woahhh mate that was a ripper care video! hahaha hope your eye is okay.... i need to get my hands on bristlenose, ive got a 10cm wild caught L397 pleco and and two 5 cm juvies that i can hopefully get to breeding!
Thanks heaps Bodgie ✌✌ a lot of editing went into this one. Mate, the L397's are an amazing looking pleco! Would be awesome if you can get them to spawn!
Jason, odontodes are not the bristles on the head. They are the external teeth like structures next to the mouth and on the pectoral fins of your fish. You can see an example at 6:37 of the odontodes on his fins.
We have just had a clutch of eggs ,sadly the male booted the eggs so we have put the eggs in a tub and we have 15 wigglers some still to hatch . What's the best thing to get for the baby's to put them in please as their in a 12.5 really useful rub at the moment , still got sacks on them
A plastic storage container is a very cheap option, I used to use them for betta fry, and they worked perfectly, the only downside I ever found to them is that they don't exactly look amazing. These days I just use cheap 25l fish tanks, but I would reccomend going bigger just to reduce the workload. Id also reccomend using pothos or peace lillies or some kind of external plant to filter the water, I usually add a few crypts, but don't go nuts on aquatic plants, they help filter the water, and it's something natural for the fish, but you also want to be able to catch them in a few months time... Trust me in a heavily planted aquascape that can takes hours, my first 2 batches caught me seriously off guard and I had to catch them to move them, wasnt fun, wasnt easy, and it wasnt a 1 day job, I think it probably took about a week to get them all out, and quite a few were probably eaten!
thanks for the video again i'm always watching this when i need some help for bn plecos! i asked on this video before but can I ask 1 last quesiton about the cleaning of sponge filter? i really don't know when to clean my sponge filter for my bristlenose plecos tank... so i want to ask usually when do you clean your sponge filter and how??? hope i can get a answer for this! thank you again!
Not a problem Kim, glad you find it helpful. I admit I am very lazy when it comes to cleaning them. Over a month can go by before I clean one of the sponges of my double headed sponge filters. I suggest if you have double headed sponge filters that you only clean one. And then clean the other. Alternate which one you clean so the tank always has seeded media in it.
I'm not familiar with that filter but I did google search to see what the filter looks like. From the photos I would say yes, the fry may go into the inlet. Find a sponge that could fit over it or warm fly screen around it.
hey jason great vid! i'm goign to collect some breddeer raised peppermints today in sydney! do you think 10 are enough to form a breeding colony? and what size is an adult pleco? ready for breeding?
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! 10 will be a very productive colony!! A large adult peppermint would be approx 15cm. Breeding depends more on age than the size of the fish though. That said, if your peppermints are above the 10cm size they are definitely breeding age!
I don't believe so, no. It seems that Bristlenose catfish sometimes get called Plecos for short. However, actual Plecostomus grow much larger than Bristlenose
I personally keep 1 female for 1 male. I find having multiple females in a tank with 1 male can stress him out as all the females try to mate with him. If he is already guarding eggs from a previous spawn and another female wants to mate with him, she may try kick the previous eggs out of his cave. However, experienced males will be able to raise more than once clutch of eggs up at a time. Just make sure you give him a break between spawns as it can be stressful for the male.
@@JasonsCichlids thank u so much for replying! I'm trying to seperate all the males and the females. One more question, does the size of the tank effect their breeding/spawning? For example a pair in a 10 gallons only or only a pair in 40 gals
They should breed yes. For bristlenose its more about age than size for sexual maturity. But if your male is 3 to 4 inches long then it should be around that age anyway
If the male is sitting over the eggs and fanning them then everything should be fine. Otherwise, if the eggs aren't attached to the driftwood you can try raise them in a egg hatchery, I have raised the eggs up in devices similar to the Fluval Holding and Breeding Box (but used a cheaper brand that isn't made anymore).
I have tried everything, and mine refuse to breed. I have 2 large adult males, 5.5 inch 4 females, all about 4.5 inches. Tried every tip i have found 0 breeding. I have totally given up.
I'm currently cycling a new tank to stop the breeding. My poor guy needs a break! I don't know what I'm doing but holy crap everybody's breeding and I can't keep up.
It is a great problem to have. But yeah if he needs a bit of a break you can try separate him from the female. However, bristlenose can go through phases where they don't spawn for a few months and then back at it again.
Done that 2 males, 4 females, 6 caves, varied diet, 2 cool water changes a week, 15 months later no breeding all adults around 3 years old all 4.5 inches plus.
@@intergalacticmuffin7071 I would assume it’s either your water is too hard, there is a buildup of nitrogen waste in the tank, bad stock or the caves are the wrong size. how many male-female can I keep together for breeding in the same tank of 150 liters?
Maybe 2 pairs. You will be inundated with fish in no time!
How quickly can you get them to sellable size?
Hmm really depends. If you're doing daily water changes they will put on size quickly but they generally take about 12 weeks to reach an inch.
