- okay so I finally tried off bug spray on my yellow clear one tail lights for my '96 OBS Chevy Silverado and buy a surprise they actually came clear by using off bug spray
#obs #silverado #shorts
Now, whenever you tailgate, skeeters won't bother your peter!
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I used the exact same kind, don't let it sit, just coat it real good and wipe it right off, it works way better that way!
I redid it it came out better
I let it sit on there and now have permanent stains wheee I sprayed it
@@ConnerV cuz you shouldnt use that its like an acid eating the plastic
@@ConnerV Should have used acetone 🥴
The Higher the Deet the better.
I use Repel 40% DEET!
Your supposed to Spray it on An With 2 or 3 fingers rub lens an work around in Circular Patter while continuing Spraying.
An wipe off with a Terri cloth WHILE WET. DONT LET IT DRY THEN WIPE OFF!!
LAST ABOUT 3 MONTHS AN DO OT AGAIN.
3$ A YEAR BOUGHT REPEL AT WALMART .
Perfect product to spray on your skin.
Yeah I know right like how safe can this stuff actually be if it eats oxidization
You mean it also repels mosquitoes??
@@ludicrous7044 No, it literally melts away oxidation. Yet, we spray it on our skin.
I just spent a night sleeping in a room full of glue remover and an opened isopropyl apcohol, is it dangerous?
@@giggittygiggitty7283 it doesn't really matter. I spray brake cleaner and carb cleaner to clean my hands and I use gasoline to remove paint from my hands. Gotta remember to use lacquer thinner to clean your face, and then the windshield wiper fluid to shower
The higher the DEET the better it works.. Managed a detail center and we only used the Deep Woods kind. BTW it works most of the time, there always is a point of no return.
If I paid to get my car detailed and they used bug spray on my headlights, I'd be pissed.
@@spiralnapkin Most places do, it works better than the chemical made for it. The dude that taught me the trick works in Vegas detailing luxury cars.
😂😂😂😂 SAME
It eats through the plastic, takes the top layer off. Did it on my headlights. They were good at first but quickly became worse than they started off. Gotta seal it with something after. Better off just using something like Griot's headlight restoration kit. Those work pretty good.
Clear coat them right after
What about polish right after I use the bug spray
I use the Meguiars Kit
@@Popcorx polishing isn’t going to coat them with anything so you’ll still end up with the same or worse oxidation/yellowing some short time down the road. Gotta at least have a regular schedule for applying some kind of sealant or perhaps if you can afford it have a local detail shop apply some PPF film over the lens. Ideally you’d just sand them to a certain grit and then use a quality clear over top of the lens, but that’s not the only way either.
@@Gstar5150 if the UV sealant drips down onto your masking tape, pull it off immediately. I left it for maybe 10 minutes because i didnt want to accidentally touch the sealant before it dried while taking the tape off and it pulled my clear coat up.
Correct me if I'm wrong; but I was taught that lense yellowing is caused by condensation deposit on the inside of the lense. Usually from a damaged gasket.
The yellow came off pretty easy
Finally someone with a brain
I use mother’s aluminum paste, it’s the white paste. O’reilly sells the 5oz for $8 and you only need a small amount. Clean area with soapy water and remove dirt particles, polish with a clean/dry rag and that’s that.
That's the only aluminum polish I will ever use unless I get sponsored
@@straightpipedchevy yeah, I know what you mean. I know for a fact if they make tooth whitener it would sell. Colgate now with Mother’s bahaha
I don't particularly like to share any of my detailing secrets but, simple paint compound would leave them like new for a long long long time it removes all of that yellow film and oxidation and leaves a nice glossy sheen too
I've had several people share their detailing Secrets but that's not really a secret because everybody knows compound and polish goes a long way
You know what works longer than a few hours of bug spray. 600 grit sand paper, soapy water and finishing with uv protection aerosol spray. Now you can charge 60 bucks for headlight restoration too.
I've already sanded the tail light down as I stated in the video and it did not work as well as the bug spray
600 is too course, it'll never clear up with 600. Use 1k, 2k, 3k. Then Polish compound.
@@straightpipedchevy i think he meant all together in steps spray it first then sand itll probably scrub the yello better and take more with it than just wiping :)
@@straightpipedchevy takes some more elbow grease and time
@@ANOTHERMFER basically what happens when you're sanding it's not necessarily scrubbing the yellow clean as much as it's literally removing plastic. So it shaves down the yellow until it's gone reviling the clear plastic underneath. So its better to start with a lower grit sandpaper I recommend 1000k because you're gonna stop at something around 3000k an if you start too low it'll take a lot longer to get up to 3000k
With my headlights we used some brake cleaner fluid, once we wiped it off we used a new UV clear coat. Now they look like new!
I just use compound and polish and it still crystal clear
You could also you synthetic car polish compound. I had great results with something like that... it works well on scratches too!
Check out the newest video
That's the power of deet baby
She likes it
If it works that well on the taillights, just imagine what it’s doing to your old clear coat and paint with all that overspray that you didn’t wipe off.
Doesn't look like he cares tbh
Lmao have you seen what the truck lookes like?
Wouldn't make much of a difference
The real issue is keeping it from oxidizing quick like again. Because unless you can seal it with a clear coat afterwards. Then no matter what methode you do. You will continue to deal with the same problem. I give it a month tops .
Been using that shit since 80s, never doesn't work yet. Great job!
Thank you for your support and thank you for your service
Hit it with a lil baby oil every few days or after a rain. Mine been lookin new since 2018. I used a magic eraser to get the oxidation off though. Still got the same baby oil bottle from the dollar tree!
I hit mine up with McGuire's ultimate cleaner wax every few months
@@straightpipedchevy I will give that a try
That stuff works pretty good
I've been saying this for years. It also removes permanent marker.

The white toothpaste like Colgate and a cotton polisher for the drill. The best I’ve seen!

Or you can use the $12 rustoleum kit for head/taillights works like a charm!
Might as well lol can of bug spray is about that price
I wanted to see what the hype was about this bug spray
I got like 10 cans for free lol
Have you tried turning it off then turning it back on first?
And it keeps the bugs away while sitting on the tail gate 😂
Oh for sure for sure
The craziest thing I've used to polish lights is fine-grit hand cleaner, smeared it on, rub it in a bit and wash it off, it works surprisingly well.
Wait for real I got some i might try thst
Orange pumice works great
i tried that too didn't work great
Nice step side!👊🏻
Thank you my brother
Those tailights were so popular back in the day
I love them
Definitely doesn't cause cancer! Nahhhh
Right like wtfffff
I just use plastic cutting compound. It cost about the same as off but last a lot longer and looks way better.
Works to clean them but you need clear coat so they dont get yellow again
I already did that it came out really good looking but I'm going to restore them better
To those of already mentioned it but yes it does work. You need to wipe it off immediately and only way prof one or two times before it dries or it will start streaking up. Great little trick if you’re flipping cars or just looking for a quick cheap fix
I ended up redoing them because it looked horrible after a few days I sanded them down and Polished them now they look new

Learned this about 2 years ago the stronger deet the better and just leave for 2-3 seconds if you let it dry it gets sticky
I did it on my front turn signals and it removed all the yellow and they look so amazing
I heard vinegar works wonders too lol....
Had to add a vinegar comment somewhere

Rubbing alcohol works also
I just bought new headlight housings for my car & all new LED bulbs for the low beam, high beam , blinkers ( amber ) also reverse lights & fog lights . All LED. I literally can’t wait to get it all installed this week . Gonna be so amazing just the headlights will look so much. Better no more like yellowish fog oxy headlights .
Deet in high concentration will eat through the top layer of an oxidized plastic so you could just wipe it off and it'll look new but this lasts about a week in Florida before you have to do it again because of the sun here.
Ill have to try it
Don’t let it sit I did my headlights a year ago and there still looking brand new
It only sat for like maybe a half a minute
Sand it with 800 grit, go back over it with 1200 grit, and coat with minwax semigloss wipe on poly... it will be crystal clear, and last longer than the other store bought methods. Takes some practice, but I've been using it for years on customer vehicles and my own.
I already know how to do all that go check out the new video
Off with DEET. I’ve used it. Requires buffing for sure.
I might try it
Now I need to try it
It worked way better on my lower turn signals
U won't be disappointed for a quick fix
it is actually dissolving the plastic making it weak and more prone to cracking from heat. Like the heat like the lights produce
I decided to go ahead and send them down and polish them check out the newest tail light video to see the end results they look almost brand new
Everything works till it washes off after a rainy day

Keeping the paper and housing with a spray bottle Sand with 2k up down left right until its not cutting. Repeat last step but change paper to 3k grit. Sand until you feel like it's not cutting anymore. Wash soap and water. Get microfiber rag and your favorite polishing compound and hit them shits up until they look brand new
I did that with the passenger side tail light and it didn't come out that good at all I use a 1k 2k and 3k and polish
@@straightpipedchevy damn. Might've went thru it too fast maybe. I've always sanded an polished. With each grit I sand it until I don't feel it cutting anymore and at the end I wash it really good and dry em off. Put polish on it let it sit for like 5 or 6 minutes maybe an microfiber rag em clean. Only didn't work the 1st time. Also WD40 works ok too. But it leaves a smokey glaze on em like that spray you were using too.
You can buy those taillights new for $20 each online lol
But if I did that I wouldn't have almost 400,000 views on a video
Seafoam deep creep. Wipe it on a rag and then rub it on real quick, we used to do that at my old shop when someone would bring their car in. Of course it’s temporary but if they liked the idea of freshened up headlights we would sand/buff their headlights.
Yeah I started to sand them down and I'm actually getting ready to polish them today
The uv protective layer is the only thing that turns yellow. Strip it, re apply protection and you're good to go
I already did that with clear coat they turned out amazing
@@straightpipedchevy yeah. It looked like that's exactly what the big spray did. It's crazy to think we use that on our skin.
It works! I just did it! Wish yt allowed pics post. Get it! And I did the nail polish remover truck a couple weeks before. That only got some off. This takes it all away! Nice and easy! It's about $10 but worth it! DO NOT BUY A HEADLIGHT CLEANER OR DO AN OTHER TRICK FIRST. DO THIS FIRST! TRUST ME! I WAS A GUINEA PIG!
🤣🤣🤣 well I’m glad you got it to work man I need to polish mine again.
@@straightpipedchevy All good. I just wanted a temporary fix before I order the newer and stylish ones 😀😀😀
I damaged the finish on a rifle with that stuff. I think it would easily strip oxidation off plastic. Be sure you get it all off when your happy with how it looks.... Good video.
Why would you use it on a rifle LOL thanks for the comment
@@straightpipedchevy I squirrel hunt with an old Belgian made Browning .22 rifle. So I didn't exactly use it on it jus got some on it.
Be careful, it’s working because the DEET in the spray is chemically melting the top layer, that’s why it’s harder to wipe off but it’ll also make some lights softer and will yellow and scratch up pretty fast. After you do this was the lights very well with warm soap and water and coat with a thin coat of car wax… it’ll help it last.
I did
I’ve used Off on light bezels and tons other home products I found that MILSEK works the best for just about anything cleaning sunglasses scuffs on shoes jewelry linoleum floors cellphone computer screens
That sounds like a good product that might have to try it out

There's a bunch of stuff I plan on trying to see what works the best
it works for a few days good quick fix
I ended up sending them down and polishing them check out the newest taillight video for the results
I've read other comments stating that doing this actually strips the clear coat from the manufacturer & that's why it's better to just use actual headlight cleaner
Idk
Well the clear code that the manufacturer uses that's what actually turns yellow because it gets tarnished by the Sun the bug spray removes that layer of clear coat
Acetone works good too. Gotta be quick.
I don't have any I just wanted to try the bug spray
As soon as it dries it'll be blurry again but if you get some 2,000 grit sand paper and sand it really good , then paint it with about 2 or 3 coats of clear coat, it'll be better than new which means it will last longer than yr vehicle
Go watch the new video I already did it
Just use regular car wax. You can also use transmission fluid. Any oil or wax product will get them clear temporarily.
I sanded one of them down and Polished it with car wax and it's Crystal Clear
Gotta sand! 👍🏾 I’ve been doing this for 15 years, works so good 😂😂😂
one I dig your name two I sanded it down and Polished it check out the newest headlight video to see the results they look amazing
it burns plastic. That’s why the first layer plastic comes off. In the future your taillights won’t be repairable with sanding. You have to use bug spray each time and it gets more faded
I use the bug spray on at one time and wiped it off and sanded it down a polished it they look amazing now
I found depending on the coding that they use or somebody uses on the lights it will it will clear it then after it dries it will turn white where you can't see because it's melted the original coating you have to sand that original coating off and then that stuff still works
I sanded one tail light down and use the bug spray on the other one and the bug spray removed all the yellow it worked better than sanding
Degreaser works aswell like super clean or purple power
I have purple Power I might actually try to see if it works.
The higher DEET content spray works best!
Spray it on, sit for 2 minutes, and repeat if necessary.
Thank you for your support I will have to try that
You said you sanded the headlights but obviously didn't use a 600-1200 grit sandpaper or finish with a baking soda buff to polish it a little. Big spray/wd 40 just fills the micro cracks with oil and oil is translucent so it appears to work till it drys or washes off. Works if you re apply every morning and evening but just $10 and you can get a piece of 600-800-1,000- 1,600 and have a way better finished product. But you can home skip the fine sanding if you sand up to 600 ish and just clear coat it with clear plastic enamel or any clear plastic paint. That will fill the micro cracks permit and look brand new for 5-10+ years
Um yes I did jack smfh yall no nothing about cars

If you wet sanded and clear coated your headlights wouldn't look like you dragged them across the concrete. You can say you did it but you didn't spend the effort to do it right. It's not hard , only takes 30 minutes . Don't have a to be a dickhead but I see you are what you eat
1500-2000 wet grit sandpaper and some polishing compound oughta do it
Did that didn't work
Using the wrong stuff. Make sure it has atleast 40% deet in it. Spray on wipe off. Or get a turtle wax headlight restoration kit. You can make it look brand new

Must be whatever solvent is in that particular aerosol, I bet there are a bunch more products that have it, too.
Well this is America so of course there is I mean for crying out loud they put paint thinner in certain cereal brands
You are supposed to sand it down starting with a course wet and dry then move up to an ultra fine grit then clean it with alcohol and spray lacquer over the top let it dry and polish
I did that but it didn't work
Almost all clear headlights and some taillights can look like new just water sand them like if was car paint them buff them with buffing compound and then with polish and u r done! I'm a car painter and I started doing it before anyone back in the early 90s!

I'd rather just smoke a J and do some wet sand/buffing. It will only last about a year IF that. Some people 800grit sand it and then clear it and call it a day. Problem with that is....once the clear starts to decay, it's time for a new head/taillight assembly
😂😂 for sure
The reason is because of the acetone in the spray. You're basically melting the plastic.
It doesn't look like it melted the plastic it's not blurry or super hazy it looks like it just pulled the yellow off
After you sand it down or spray the bug spray on take and give it a few coats of clear coat..this is what keeps the lights from getting foggy.
