I Bought EVERY Headlight Restoration Kit At O'Reillys *And Tested Them*

- Headlight restoration is a huge deal these days. After cars switched to plastic headlight lenses we had to find ways to fix them when the UV coatings degrade and the plastic itself starts to break down. The plastic yellows or becomes hazy, reducing the light output and making the car look much worse. Now it seems like everyone makes a kit to fix them. Since I had 6 trashed headlights in the shop that needed fixed, I decided to buy every kit I could at O'Reillys and put them to the test.

The True Test is how will they look in a Week… or a Month from now?
Congrats on 300K! So excited and happy for you. Well deserved.
Damn he’s been on 300k for over a year?? That’s crazy. He makes great videos and I’ve been watching him for a long time, he deserves a lot more.
@@rileyn54 much agreed!!! Gotta keep sharing it and get to 400k! Such a good channel.
The Turtle Wax kit really impressed me. I was not expecting it to be that good.
Aluminum polish compound. Hand applicator, microfiber buff by hand, NEW looking with no headache in a minute or two
I used the turtle wax myself. The clear coat did not last long and the headlights hazed in a couple of months.
@@2011joser yep
I tried it once, my headlight oxidized again in like a week. And when the headlight hazed again it was worse than it was before I used the turtle wax.
@@soap38 Try the Meguiar's kit. The end results (for me) weren't quite AS good as the Turtle Wax, but the lights stayed clear for months.
Of course, NONE of these products are a permanent solution and the lights will always haze over again a few months down the road. The only way to permanently fix hazy lights is to replace the lens. If only automakers made these lenses out of glass instead of plastic, we wouldn't have this problem.
Great test, I really appreciate when someone takes the time and effort to review several off the shelf products. Excellent job!
Awesome awesome AWESOME-ER!
Being a retired mobile detailer (4 spine surgeries in 4 years) as you can probably tell by looking behind me at my polishing pads in my profile pic, I love seeing these reviews. I use to do a ton of reviews for Autogeek back in the early 2000's...I drove a yellow Ranger....and genuinely loved being surprised by the underdog product! As I was watching you, JRGo, use it, I could tell it was doing something special. I think honestly, because you didn't use a machine. With plastic, I think hand sanding is needed. Maybe the machine is making to much heat or can't contour enough, but the hand is better. A DA is better than a drill 100%!!!! I wish you would try it with a 3in pad and plate. Remember, with a DA you get more cut with a smaller pad as well.
Once again thank for the time you both spent doing this!!!!
I used the Turtle Wax Retorer and it has help up great now for 2 years. I am very please with it. And great price. 2002 Honda CRV. Food service glove? Worked great who needs more? Keeps cost lower. I was impressed with results for the price. Two thumbs up for me. 2 YEARS LATER IS STILL LOOKS NEARLY NEW.
I have used 3M in the past with a drill and it has worked well, but your result with Turtle Wax is eye opening. This is really useful, probably the most useful one you have every done. You may want to consider doing comparisons when it makes sense. How to fix cars is useful as well, but this appeals to a larger audience!
Turtle Wax for me, from my experience with it!
I used the Turtle wax on the brake lights and blinkers of my 99 Suzuki GSXR 750 and it made them look brand new also.
3m restoration kits the best, The demonstration here was wrong if they took the trouble to read the instructions first? The first two steps is dry sanding only!! It's the p3000 trizact you add water!!!🤔 😡
@@keithroberts5611 Ah, you are right. I forgot that as I used the 3M awhile back and it did work well. Perhaps that is why it worked better for me than here - I appreciate your pointing that out.
Used this video to get some over the counter headlight restoring products. I tried something from Meguiars before but it wasnt....good. After watching this and applying the turtle wax kit I can confirm it is actually the GOAT
I've been detailing professionally on and off for years and out of the thousands of videos I have watched, you boys crushed this. You bought what the everyday Joe would buy and gave them the test. This is my first video I have seen of you gentlemen and I was pleasantly very surprised. Not to technical and extremely honest in your conclusions. Way to go💪🤙
I have been using PlastX by McGuire's for the last 20 years. I started on a 92 Crown Victoria that I thought needed new headlamps. Using the cream and blue paper shop towels, the lights came up almost like new in under half an hour with no tools. I've been using it ever since on Arthur, my 1990 Volvo 240 wagon. Twice a year and the lights do come out looking like brand new. Only takes about 10 minutes to do both lights. Arthur is still wearing his original 31 year old headlamps, and they are hard to distinguish from new headlamps.
Turtle Wax, winner of the prestigious "WatchJRGo Headlight Restorer Award". I assume you're going to do a special for 300k. Congratulations on that, man!
One tip on the old fashioned sanding kits. Park it outside, and put the garden hose on fast drip, sitting on top, dripping down the face, and then you can sand away. The continuous water keeps you from burning the lens and keeps the paper from loading up. Used the sanding disk kits for a long time, but that RainX kit will be my next purchase.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video and spending the money on these products, definitely helps a lot!
As someone who doesn’t know where the nearest O’Reillys is, I appreciate you making them feel happy with your business.
Gonna try the Rain-X quickie product on my DIL's Sentra headlights. They're pretty bad so even a quick and maybe temporary improvement will be good enough. We'll see.
Sylvania kit is jands down the best on the market .it exceeds expectations! Your headlight will look brand new! The clarity is equal to factory brand new ! Absolute fact!
For a headlamp thats not too bad, can you skip the 1st two sanding stages and jump to the foam sponge (powerball) and paste?
Getting Project Farm vibes with this one and I LIKE IT!
Interesting finding this today. I just used the 3M kit with my drill today on my 98 Suburban, then added some new and improved bulbs … and, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I quickly removed the grille assembly, so no masking required. Such a simple upgrade.
I used the 3M ultra on a 9 year old Mazda 3 with projector headlights. Before the restoration there was no defined beam cut-off that you normally have with projector beam lights. I used plastx polish and it didn't do much. It cleaned them up some but still had a terrible scattered beam pattern. Somehow the algorithm gods brought this video to me and I watched it and thought let's try turtle wax or 3M. Man it did not disappoint. If you look really close you can still see some faint scratches but from 5 feet away they look almost new. I am a quality inspector so most people probably wouldn't see the faint scratches. Dope product, next time I'll try the turtle wax on my old E46 headlights.
Great side-by-side comparison. My only suggestion, besides a better head-blocking camera angle, would be to provide a shot of the cost of each product that you tested. Thank you for a job well done.
Excellent analysis. I am off to buy the rainx kit for my 2001 v6 accord with 96k miles on it. I like the very good result with a quick and easy application. Thanks for the excellent analysis.
I used the Turtle Wax on my Prius headlight, but it did get hazy after about a month or so.
It would be nice if you could find identical lamps and do a time lapse for a month to see which ones hold up.
try a ceramic coat, gyeon trim q2 or any decent headlight UV protection coating you can find
Why don't you just make videos of that? You never know. You could just make a new headlight restoration kit for the world.
get a film coating like XPEL. I have one on my (then) brand new 2014 Forester, and it's coming up on 10 years and the lights still look brand new.
3m swirl remover for dark cars is the best headlight polish for cleaning headlights and tall lights, then follow with ceramic wax of your choice for the win.
Thank you for sharing! Here is a tip for you. Please consider using Meguires Headlight clear coating G 17804 after cleaning and polishing headlights.. I have tried several kits, but found the electric drill pad attachments 500-3k grit , with compound are easier and quicker. Use water as a lubricant first on base polishing, then switch to quick wax as a lubricant. They all look clearer after using the clear coat regardless of the brand.. They last about 6-12 months and are easily restored, This works much better than using a clear coat Rustoleum paint, which seems to melt the plastic and may yellow in time..
Off bug spray is absolutely magic on headlights. spray on and wipe off. Magic!!!
My experience of using different products including the Turtle Wax kit, Meguiar's Plastix, has been they all do good on the day you clean them and none of them stay clear very long and then right back to being cloudy. So I go with the quickest cleaner and plan to do it on a weekly or more often basis.
I used the Turtle Wax kit and finished it with the Meguiar’s PlastX before putting the ceramic coating on it that’s in the Turtle Wax kit and it looks great.
I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.
This video was right on time! Daughter just got her first car, everything great on it but the headlights, will try the turtle wax.
In the last couple of years Turtle Wax has really put out some great products. They've started being more visible on the "socials" and I've found that most of their recent Si/Ceramic products "got game" - they're not really a "joke" anymore - The "Wax n Dry" is my go-to for post wash spray (although it doesn't last much past the next rain). Stuff usually goes on sale here mid to late spring I'll buy my year's supply....
I used the Ultra Heavy Duty 3M (gray box) for my severely yellowed 2007 FJ Cruiser and they look brand new now. When using this one, I used barrier paper and masking tape all around the headlight and removed the grill to keep from damaging the surrounding areas.
Off spray with a high deet count works really well also with a microfiber
This was such an informative Test!
Great to see a real-world test of these. Have been toying with the Turtle Wax kit for my slightly clouded Saab headlights. This has convinced me 👍
I know when I used the high end 3M kit, I sanded it down thoroughly and carefully followed the clearcoat wipes it turned out the same as the turtle wax. I will have to try the turtle wax and see how it turns out!
On Amazon the two top-rated kits are 3M followed by Sylvania
After watching this, I gave the Turtle Wax kid a shot on the lights for my son’s 12 year old Civic. Holy cow it worked great. Thanks for the video. Be sure that Turtle Wax sends you your commission.
My Dads car is definitely in need of this, so this video was really helpful lmao. Thanks man!
After watching this video I decided to go with the Turtle wax kit, and it worked really good, thanks for comparison.
I work at a car parts place and I get asked which one is the best at least 5 times/week. Thank you!!
Benn using Meguiar, 2 step--G2970-- for about 8 years. $1700. Looks like new when finished, lasts about 3 years. Enough in kit for about 5 or 6 cars.
I work at a competitor to O'reilly... And people sleep on that Turtle Wax but it's my go to and has been for a long time.
That turtle wax kit is legit. I used it on my dog lights just to test it out and was very impressed.
Thanks for the video, I was actually looking into different Headlight restoration kits as the Headlights on my 2004 Outlander currently look really terrible and thanks to the hazing and yellowing currently put out less light then any other of my cars, even though most of them are 30+years old (but they do have Glass headlights, so no oxidation there). So I guess Turtle Wax it is then, the Kit also seems to be rather inexpensive, I just bought it for 13 Euros over here in germany.
I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.
@@Lili-xq9sn Acetone will eat into the polycarbonate lens... it will etch & scuff it. What did you clean it off with afterwards? Did you seal and UV protect it afterwards? How's it holding up now?
@@birgip.m.1236 I finally did it a few weeks ago. I used the acetone right before I washed my car. Then put on the uv. My headlights are in the sun all day, but now it's winter, so not hot sun. So far they look like new still. I'll reapply the uv in spring.
Guys I appreciate you keeping it real. I tried the other quick like toothpaste wd40. They last for about a week. I have an older model car I am real into. From now on Orely's turtle
I've always used turtle wax products on all my cars it's unbeatable cheers from Australia good video
I tried Nulens on my 2009 pilot, worked very well and looked better than new!
I'm not surprised at all that TurtleWax was superior. All of their products are really top notch, now. And for much less than the elite brand names. I've used all their ICE products and ceramic coat products and they are excellent. I've also been impressed with the tire & wheel cleaner, too.
Turtle wax worked great for me!!! Great video! I've tried other "home" remedies that never really did anything. Then when my daughter got in an accident the insurance covered the repair they only replaced one headlight which made the yellow one really stand out and also I think make the unequal lighting quality unsafe in my opinion:(
Hi how are the headlights to this day? Just curious as to how long the turtle wax lasts
@@eliteice6737 Still looking good:)! The restored headlight that I used the turtle wax product on blends pretty well with the headlight that was replaced. Still very happy with how it turned out:)
ABOUT TIME you can walk in there without a maskl!!!
Actually, Mothers Mag and Wheel polish beats all of the "Kits" . Just use a microfiber towel and very little scrubbing required. Try it, you will be amazed.
All of 🐢 wax products are the some of the best on the market they are way underrated I love to use their products
I used a silica based whitening toothpaste and a drill brush. Worked great!
Turtle Wax also has the best carpet/upholstery cleaner too. Great Company with proven track record. I have a 94 Regal with glass headlights that needs done; will probably need wet sanded, compounded ( will use turtle wax compound) thanks for this.
Great content. Would like to see more product comparisons, tools, hacks and fixes etc now that you have a shop.
Flitz is the one I've used in the past and worked very nicely.
Thanks so much, RainX headlight restorer, on my way now to go get some. 👍 Because first two links give 404 error friend. Need to fix it.
GO TURTLE 😂 am gonna use it on my BMW, which happens to be the same model here.
Meguires finishing compound in the black bottle with the red hood on the label, $10. Quick and easy.
I don’t know what I used to clean my headlights I believe turtle wax...and they’ve been clean almost a year!
Congrats on 300k. Happy for you and well deserved.
Plan on using the turtle wax after watching this. I tried the 3 m polishing compound, took some off but not all. Disappointed. Thanks
Past 4 years turtle wax has come a long way.
Awesome! Will but the Turtle Wax Abd the Rain X as a back up or emergencies. Thank you for testing these products so we can make our decision
I would’ve loved to see the Cerakote in this competition. I’ve been using the turtle ultra and it always came out great but I’m thinking of trying Cerakote.
the chemical sprayer for water is genious, i’m going to do that now
It's full of our riseless wash. The ONR is perfect for this application so it seemed appropriate.
In my professional opinion the Meguiars kit is the best out there!
BG is what we used at the dealership. Best kit I ever used. Hate its so hard to find.
Headlight restoration requires mechanical abrasion and a clearcoat or or UV protectant top coating otherwise they will yellow in a few months. SEM 21013 is the single best topcoat and I have successfully used direct summer sunlight to cure the coating. Also some replacement lenses can be purchased from eBay and can be changed with a short warm up in the oven to warm the glue.
Missing the ultimate soccer mom UTR, the Chevrolet Suburban
It's the same as the GMC
The Envoy was the same platform as the Chevy Trailblazer not the Suburban. The GMC equivalent to the Suburban is the Yukon XL
In my experience with Headlight Lens Restoration, some product brands work better on different car brands. Mequiars PlastX doesn't seem to work well on any headlights, but Mequiars Clear Plastic Cleaner #17 followed by #10 Polish works amazing on Honda/Acura headlights but does nothing on Lexus headlights.
Deep woods off. 40 to 80 percent deet. White vinegar, and regular soap.
Spray the off on a sponge. Scrub until clear, quickly wash with the white vinegar and water mix, don't get it on your paint.
After you neutralize the deet with the vinegar, simply wash and done.
Don't waste your money.
I used the 3m that involved using the drill and worked well, then coated it, lasted a long time
Detail Dude for the win!
Used the turtle for my bimma then found your video and was pleased with both the results and your video. Thx!!
Damn that turtle 🐢 wax brand is crazy 🔥🔥🔥
I bought the turtle wax one today and gonna use it tomorrow. Kind of excited now ^_^
Great job. I am heading to O’Reilly now.
You just did my comparison shopping for me. I just need to do one vehicle so Turtle Wax it is. Off to O’Reilly’s!
Congrats on 300k subs
Have you reviewed bumper restoration? Back to Black, etc...
The mothers kit is the one I use and the 3000grit is supposed to be used dry. If it’s used dry like the instructions say it looks just as good as the turtle wax
Congrats on 300k!
Great job guys vary informative stuff thank's for the hard work
Meguiars Plastx is a great quick polish like the Rain X as well. I've been using it a lot.
I've used that bluemagic before an never had problems that's odd . An usually i put the product on the headlight an let it sit for a 1 min to dry an then take a different type of towel that has some more of a rougher feel to it an scrub it back off an the headlight will look good again cause Microfibers are too soft when comes to trying to get headlights cleaned good that are really bad .
I mostly use like Meguiars compound in a grey cream yellow looking bottle that has good grit in it , an a good buffer an then go to town an it takes all that junk off in seconds an last for a while too .
You’re the best. Thanks. Not hard to look at either.
Very enlightening. 300k subs, well deserved .
Best review yet for restorer kits! Very surprising.
Turtle wax for the best result.
RainX for a quick great result, especially if you can find a wipe on sealer afterwards.
I used RainX to clean my headlights and they came out great...can I put a regular paste car wax over the lens now , to give it some UV protection?....thanks
Turtle Wax has a new product called Heal and Seal and is supposed to be very good.
Cerakote Ceramic Headlight Restore is another very good one to consider.
I love the maguirs headlight restoration kit with that kit your headlights will last about a year 2 sandpaper a drill attachment brush to agitate the head lights for better results i recommend using a drill like Milwaukee or other drill sets... the kit also come with the paste and a small bottle that has sealant and a foam applicator most of these kits dont come with a sealant and headlight only last like 3 weeks or so then they start getting hazed again because theres no sealant protecting the plastic from the UV light the reason some of these headlights didn't came out good because they did it by hand drill set will come out even better remmber work smart and not hard.
I spray insect repellent on a clean cloth , rub it in rub it off. Small section at a time.
I bought ONE restoration kit. ONE. It was mediocre at best, and was temporary, which I knew.
Then I went and bought new headlight kits for the car. They're amazing, new and more brilliant than the OEM ones.
Just upgrade and get nice new ones. That's what I learned. "You get what you pay for." comes to mind here.
Nice to know I bought the best kit first try..
Hit 300k subscribers congrats dooooood
Thank you for doing this now I know what kit I am using on my SUV.
Project Farm had a similar test and the Turtle Wax blew me away then and now!
I've used the Turtle wax kit with good results.
I had no idea, and now I do, thank you.
question is how long it takes to go back to the way they looked before. Neeed a link to quality replacements
