A load of crap is right. I was an automotive engineer in the USA and wondered how CR got its data. I remember when CR tested a car in the 1980's that was sold by Chevy and Toyota ( the exact same car with different badges). The Chevy got poor ratings and the Toyota got good ratings. Guess what? The car was built by Toyota. I never trusted CR again.

Have a friend who is a Toyota person. Bought bz4x about nine months ago. Been towed twice, ultimately returned to dealer for 'repairs' that took six weeks. To their credit Toyota provided a replacement vehicle while the bz was down.

@@vancity2349 We are immersed in the EV world. We listen to Sam. The people at Consumer Reports who put this report together seem to not have been. The BZ4X did have real issues, so they should have not scored so high. However, when I do statistics using samples, sometimes my sample base is too small and the numbers get skude in a strange way. Us looking at the stats coming in, since we know EVs would look at it and right away say, wait a minute. There is something wrong here. For the non-EV person, they may not have noticed. Toyota is a brand known for their reliability for its gas cars, so a that a person or a team at Consumer Reports wouldn't see anything odd about that. For me, I'm upset that Consumer Reports put this out there and are giving readers the impression that the BZ4X is something other than crap. However, having come across a lot of misinformed reporting on EV, it doesn't seem directed by Toyota or money under the table. It seems to me that it is just another frustrating case of bad information gathering and therefor bad reporting.

Instead they take "contributions" ($30milion in 2022) and "donations" ($9million in 2022) these 2 items represented more than 1/2 the money spent on actual testing and reports for 2022. There is also $290million on the balance sheet of "contributions" towards future reports.
If brand X makes a contribution towards the cost of producing a report regardless of any overt conditions or how scrupulous you think you are there will be a bias in the results.

    • @joelado
      @joelado 5 місяців тому

@@TB-up4xi So nothing you read is legit. Everything that you see on the Internet, TV, read on hard print, everything is not legitimate. Is that what you are saying. Not only don't believe any reporting, because you know all reporting receives funding from somewhere, reporting that can actually do research or investigations uses funds, all of it is bias. The only true sources are some dude working at a sandwich shop who tells no one that he lives a separate life on the Internet in his basement is legit? OK. I'm retired. I live on my savings. No outside somebody paying for what I do on the Internet. In my research, Consumer Reports at least tries to keep its bias down by separating its funding from what it does. Are they legit. As far as I can see yes. Other institutions are more beholden to their funders, others are totally illegitimate. Sam said "they accept advertising money." They don't. How do I know this? They don't have advertisements. None. Are they getting money under the table? I have no way of knowing whether they do, but then neither do you. Consumer Reports lives mainly on its subscribers. Being legit is important to them because it is where they get most of the revenue. If they were illigitimate they would lose the faith of their subscribers, and then lose their subscribers. Logic would dictate that protecting their primary source of income would force them to be legit. I love a conspiracy. I'm deep into the Internet. But, I'm pretty sure that if Consumer Reports says they don't take advertising publicly, they have to abide by that.

Never an issue, and I live in an area where nearly ALL of the dealers are totally inept with EVs - NO ISSUES reported. Nearly All issues result from a totally unequipped and unreliable service techs. I had a sensor fail, and the dealer took 5 weeks to repair it when it was a 30min fix and the part arrived in 2 days. Also, Consumer Reports listed the Mach-E as a 'no buy' and had to remove that two days later due to pressure and inaccurate judgements.

-$9million in grants with conditions attached ( we don't know what conditions).
-$2.4million in donated vehicles which they don't say is revenue but are listed as "auto test inventories"

@@mnhsty That comment is plain just funny. There are numerous good sources on car reliability in Europe starting with state inspection agencies to insurance companies and extended warrantee sellers who even post the average repair cost for each car. I do like CR and have used them for a long time when it came to car reliability and they were usually spot on. Also, their whole model is that they don't do advertising. It's mostly funded by subscriptions. And much of their data is from their subscription base filling out annual surveys. I got many of them. That being said, the surveys don't validate ownership of anything from what I remember. So if I didn't like a certain brand, I could lie and say I was an owner and filled out major issues. Perhaps this happened here? As EV's seem to be political these days and CR subscription base is most likely all ICE owners. They also had some back and forth conflicts with Elon years ago from what I remember so maybe they are biased a bit. But I agree, cars like Tesla that provide quick and over the air software updates to address recalls, should be weighted different vs actual part replacement or software updates that take long or require a trip to the dealership.

Once completed place in order of removal on a list from 1st to last.

I don't know which consumer advocacy produced the list, but like Sam, I question the validity of its worth. There is no mention of how many cars in each category were reported-on, nor the type of issue reported. And Sam is perhaps too young (like many here) to recall a report by Choice (Australia) Magazine years ago where they declared the Toyota Crown to be Australia's most reliable car, despite it being withdrawn from sale well over a decade (if not two) earlier, and from 10 or so survey reports received. Clearly, the term "sample size" is a term the staff are/were unfamiliar with. So without further information, I'll happily discount this "report".

Consumer Reports has changed over the years and are not the same as they were back in the 1960's and 1970's which is sad since they're coming up on their 100th birthday in 2036. I owned some of the cars they blasted as the absolute worse and found them to be trouble free aside from normal consumables for well over 100,000 miles over 20 years of ownership.
Hyundai/Kia have a lot of tarnish to clean up before I trust them after the Theta2 Engine Failure Issue, Fire Recalls and Unfixable Transmission Issues (solution was to drive in fuel wasting Sport Mode) not due to the issues themselves but how they treated the owners of those vehicles so I have trouble taking a recommendation on their vehicles seriously since I've seen them sidestep warranties and SLA's made in class actions basically telling people See Ya Wouldn't Want to Be Ya when their vehicles with less than 36,000 miles failed and were undriveable.

@@robertfonovic3551It is very good news that EVs are getting a lot cheaper. Cheap second hand EVs are particularly good news in opening up the market to those who currently can't buy new.
EVs are not just transport they are an electronic good. Like all electronic equipment they have a much greater modularity and lower parts count than the mechanical ICEV they are replacing.
Once development costs have been recouped and production scaled up I expect over the next few years very good EVs like the Seal, will be selling around or under US$30,000 and enable prices up to 20% lower than comparable ICEV to be fully sustainable in the long term. EVs will then become just another consumer good, like a flat screen TV.
If course its the early adopters on the bleeding edge that bear the ramp up costs, but that's the way it has always been. This is something I am very familiar with, forty years ago I was the proud new owner of a very expensive Commodore 64. It became obsolete in the wink of an eye.

This means that speed queens last forever, and it's better for the environment to use slightly more water but not replace your washing machine when it breaks. Most experts agree on this but consumer reports values 'shiny' over buying something for life. Anyone can open up the washing machines and see the size and thickness of belts, materials made, sway, rattle, etc and confirm this.
