From the engine, to the gear box, to the air intakes, almost everything of this car was produced by his mind. A real genius throwed away by the Fiat management.
indeed. the GTO Evo had poor drag coefficient so Materazzi asked for a different shape to be drawn and wind tunnel tested for the F40. a lot of the intakes, vents, the 3rd middle pipe for the wastegate, the very light interior are his ideas. the car got criticised for a number of things which happened because after he left nobody implemented things like the option of different size seats or on-track training which Enzo had agreed would have been offered. Fiat simply pocketed the money and made many more than originally planned.

If you're having trouble imagining just how quick 200mph is, in 1989 I was standing on a small parking lot next to Autobahn 7 (I think, we were driving to Austria and I was sharing driving duties with my dad) when one of these came by at full pelt. Before I'd said "Dad, look, a Ferrari!", it was all but out of view.
I remember seeing a very old video filmed from the cockpit of a car - my memory is saying it was an F40 - going flat out, 200mph, on a regular highway/autobahn/motorway/whatever. Seeing how quickly it approached and passed regular traffic - traffic that would have been moving at 60-80mph probably - was downright scary. Literally no margin for error at that speed.

Tell that to Ralph Lauren who owns basically all of the 250 series Le Mans racecars. He'll laugh so long. A cheaper quality Ferrari from the 80s has nothing on all-time legend classics. The F40 doesn't have any true, inspiring history. It was just a product.
I’m a 90s kid (born in 89) and I agree. This car is just perfection and just looks like the ultimate driving experience. Wish I could drive one one day.
i saw an F40 in a fuel garage in the UK about 15 years ago. i was on a yamaha R6. i started chatting to the guy and he showed me around the car. he was keen on his bikes too. as we were leaving he said ' i guess we should see what's faster' it was pretty tight up to 160mph (we were 2x up on the bike). i remember it just sucking up the autumn leaves from the road and spitting them out back, it was just a glorious sight to see. he turned off and gave us a wave as he left the dual carriage way.
Beautiful and well kept... Almost like showroom condition... With all the nooks and crannies, must be a big pain to get it the way we see it before he took it out... If I was the owner, Mud puddles and even water on the road would be like land mines to me.
Spokane Wa 1994 my uncle Jason RIP picked me up from fifth grade in a yellow 308 gts Ferrari. Spokane is a smaller city for sure, probably 250k Population back then. Not known for any exotic cars, it was amazing he had one. And many others porsche, lotus, lamborghini. My uncle had them all, not at once, just trade in/upgrade. However I always got to ride in the exotics. I got more seat time then anyone, besides Jason himself. Acura NSX, Dodge Viper, hot rods, muscle cars. So I got bit at a early age and still have the sickness. The 308 was awesome and I'll never forget the smiles per gallon and thumbs up. RIP uncle Jason and thanks for the memories. I haven't seen a Ferrari in Spokane to this day. They recently built a Porsche dealership in liberty lake, that is about it. Now the population has doubled and someone could probably do well opening a car lot for these cars, a smaller lot of course. CDA idaho not far and the "Celebrities" are buying up vacation homes on lake CDA to the dismay of locals. David Lee has some pretty impressive Ferraris in his Collection. Jay in another episode of JL'sG drove David's 275GTB 4 cam. Born in Hong Kong and son of Chinese Immigrants, he took his Father's Jewelry business to another Elite level and made him wealthy enough to be able to own 12+ million dollars worth of Ferraris. 26 yrs is an eternity in the Auto World when talking technology. Back in the 60's if your Car could reach 60mph in under 6 seconds, that was considered a muscle car. This F40 was something in the low 4 second range back in the 90's which now days is a turtle when compared to even the ZO6 Corvette which is in the high 2's with the 8 speed auto. I'm not a fan of Computerized Super Cars so the F40 is still really an old school Car. I'm sure now that Jay has driven his first F40 he will probably be looking for one to add to his massive Car Collection, Good Luck Jay...
I think Jay is warming up to the idea that his collection needs a Ferrari. An F40 would be a car that he could obtain. Expensive but not as rare as say a Ferrari 288 GTO which for me would be the ultimate Ferrari to own (other than the original GTO and Ferrari California from the 60s). David should make Jay drive the 288 GTO, I think Jay will love it.
David Lee is one of my favorite guests on Jay's show. He's super humble, really knowledegeable about the cars he owns, and actually asks Jay some interesting questions. And I love how Jay teases David about his socks, LOL.
I'd happily give up socks to be able to drive a F40, any day, anywhere. I'm grateful that I get to see and hear cars like this on UA-cam, vehicles I'd never get to see in the wild, on a street in real life. I don't live in LA, I live in New Zealand at the bottom of the world, but I'm not complaining, it's a good life here, just not so many guys driving around in their F40s everyday, in fact we're a little short on most rare n collectable cars n bikes out n about around here but it's always a buzz when I see any. This is why Jay's channel, Doug DeMuro's etc are such a wonderful thing for guys like me so thanks to them all from the bottom of my heart, much appreciated.
Every time I watch an episode of JLG which I haven't seen before, I think "this is the best episode". Until I watch the next episode. The owner is a good guy, car is remarkable, lots of jokes, really great episode.
There's a great segment on an old ep of Top Gear UK. Richard Hammond reviews the F40 side-by-side with the Porsche 959 and compares them both. (Jeremy Clarkson calls the F40... "Possibly the greatest car of all time")
Brandon Mazzey he does own one. He did a video on petrolious with it. He also brought it to jay in 4 others. I hope they do a full solo video on it the 288 got is my favorite Ferrari.
Greatest car of all time. I remember saying to my best friend how I wish I had a house, cuz if I did I would've sold it and bought an F40. At the time in 2007 they were going for around £220-250k . Now they're basically unattainable.
Tell that to Ralph Lauren who owns basically all of the 250 series Le Mans racecars. He'll laugh so long. A cheaper quality Ferrari from the 80s has nothing on all-time legend classics. The F40 doesn't have any true, inspiring history. It was just a product.
@@CaptainFALKEN It's just a product? Lol ok. We're all talking your opinion on the F40 very seriously as you're driving around in your 20 year old Honda, Captain.
I drove one back in 1994. The power was explosive. The feel was amazing. It was a track car on public roads. Driven Dinos, countach, and many more but nothing compared to the f 40.
I like David - don't know a thing about him, but he seems nice and easy-to-laugh, but you don't "make it in life" because you own something or even attain great wealth. I could be wrong - I'm not - but for the sake of argument...
+aumkar chandan Yep. The beef should stay between Alejandro and David. The CupGang fanboys should just stay out of it, but of course no one on UA-cam listens to reason. Enjoy the cars and quit acting like blind sheep.
Absolutely beautiful, as all Ferraris are! I was very fortunate to have been able to drive two of my boss's Ferraris to the dealership in Chicago for warranty service many years ago. On one of the trips the dealer had both a F40 and F50 in the shop for service. What a treat to have been able to get a close look at these two classics!! Thanks for the memories Jay and Dave!
I like Jay so much and I LOVE how respectful he is of other people's cars, he wouldn't even touch it until David said he could. Unlike other people like Doug DeMuro
The sounds coming from that 'little' twin turbo-charged V8 are in fact a symphony to my ears. What a beautiful car! Old school all the way.. That gated shifter is worth the price of admission by itself.. Cars today are TOO electronified. They divorce the driver from..... driving... Visceral is the perfect word, no doubt.. I still find it amazing that there are so many 'kids' out there who have no idea HOW to drive a manual/stick shift. The first car I ever drove was a 1970 GTO with a 4-speed manual transmission.
vivostubes Bruh, even if you were rich you wouldn’t be able to buy this car for 2Billion. You need to be a certified Ferrari owner with many Ferrari’s already in your collection and then you’ll be put in a list where you have to wait and they have to choose you to be able to buy this car. Good luck finding an original one in good condition as well.
Here is the only thing you need to know about this car… I have been listening to Jay talk about cars on various formats for over 20 years now. He has a wonderful collection of cars he owns and he has driven and shared his experiences with countless other cars. This is the most excited I have ever seen Jay driving a car…ever.

This was the epitome of a supercar when I was a child and it still is today. Best car ever made.
Thanks to David Lee for sharing his car at Jay Leno's garage !!!
Fantastic Jay
Never any MIC battery issues anymore after my post :D :D :D
his laugh is fantastic hahaha
I get so much enjoyment from Jay’s videos. It’s worth tuning in just to hear the ‘mechanics’ of things, both old and new…
I love listening to people who are passionate about cars
When Jay starts the engine...Chills!
This is my favorite episode of Jay Leno's garage. And one of my top favorite cars of all time. Ferrari F40 and Lambo Diablo.
There's a great segment on an old ep of Top Gear UK. Richard Hammond reviews the F40 side-by-side with the Porsche 959 and compares them both.
(Jeremy Clarkson calls the F40... "Possibly the greatest car of all time")
Love the gurgling of exhaust and waste gate when lifting off throttle. No need for a radio at all this is rolling art no doubt.
Came for the car, stayed for the conversation. :-)
THIS was the car I dreamt about as a kid… What a beautiful work of art 👌🏼
✌️
Who ever designed the F40 was decades ahead of the game. Even if 60 years go by, it will still look FRESH AF.
Very nice video, as I remember David Lee owns a Ferrari F50 too, it would be great if he could bring it to Jay for test drive.
Ddimkas he also owns a Laferrari, + several others!
F40, F50, Enzo, LaFerrari, F328 and Ferrari FF.
David Lee?... You mean Roth?
I hope he brings his 288gto if he owns one
Brandon Mazzey he does own one. He did a video on petrolious with it. He also brought it to jay in 4 others. I hope they do a full solo video on it the 288 got is my favorite Ferrari.
"They did better than I ever could", really underscores just how humble Jay is.
I'm in love with the f40 since it came out... man what a legendary car
Mr Leno, Mr Lee, please acknowledge Engineer Materazzi , he was the brains behind the F40. I love it when this guy comes around.
Hands down the most beautiful car ever made. #1 in my book.👍👍👍
I notice Jay keeps both hands on the wheel with the F40 -says a lot!
The dynamic between Jay Leno and David Lee is the best
This car is a true statement to supercars.
Absolutely intoxicating.
I admire it deeply.
Wing and nose-point based on the '69 Charger Daytona
I drove one back in 1994. The power was explosive. The feel was amazing. It was a track car on public roads. Driven Dinos, countach, and many more but nothing compared to the f 40.
The only Ferrari I've ever cared for, and God damn she's still the most beautiful looking Ferrari EVER made 🤤😍🖤🔥
This is one of my favorites, my #1 favorite being the 330 p4
These guys bounce off eachother like pure comedy gold.
People who hate on David Lee are just jealous.
You have made it in life when you own a F40.
Yeah I don't get it, he doesn't seem like a very offensive guy.
Black King I know but Alejandro has a blind herd type of audience.
Basically what you just said!
+aumkar chandan salomondrin doesn't even make good videos anymore so I say David Lee>Salomon
I truly adore the F40. My kind of classic super car.
I'm surprised Jay does not have an F40 in his collection! For him being a big automobile enthusiast with a vast collection of rare models.
New episode of Jay Leno's garage featuring AN F40! Sleep can wait...
Loved the guy's laugh. Really made me get into the episode more. Favorite episode in a long time.
I like Jay so much and I LOVE how respectful he is of other people's cars, he wouldn't even touch it until David said he could. Unlike other people like Doug DeMuro
Its like an aviation mechanic and his tool box... You DO NOT TOUCH without permission.
I think doug would ask permission he seams a nice guy
David Lee seems like such a cool dude! I always like when he's on the show.
I can’t believe how down to earth Jay Leno is, amazing
You can almost feel like you're driving it by just looking at it. Awesome!
i still have this poster on my wall i bought at my elementary schools book fair. amazing car
I'm watching this twice. Outstanding. Mission accomplished Jay.
And I'll add you were a great replacement for Johnny. Easily my favorite segment here.
My FAVORITE CAR of all time!!! So glad to see this!!
He forgot to mention how visceral it was.
Jay Wigley 😂😂😂😂😂
New drinking game
He did! 13:20 and 13:37.
He first said 'Visceral' @6:00
If you need to be told that, you don't know what you're looking at in the first place.
"The best cars have always been one man's vision, be it the Duesenberg brothers" Jay Leno.
Hehehee
The sounds coming from that 'little' twin turbo-charged V8 are in fact a symphony to my ears. What a beautiful car! Old school all the way.. That gated shifter is worth the price of admission by itself.. Cars today are TOO electronified. They divorce the driver from..... driving... Visceral is the perfect word, no doubt.. I still find it amazing that there are so many 'kids' out there who have no idea HOW to drive a manual/stick shift. The first car I ever drove was a 1970 GTO with a 4-speed manual transmission.
and say money cant buy happines......please...!!!
No, they say money can't buy love. But in this case it bought both!
vivostubes - Ha! The only people I have heard say that don't have any!! 😂
Ever heard the expression: Money can't buy happiness...but I'd rather be sobbing in a Ferrari than sobbing in the back of a commuter bus.
You can rent happyness with it
vivostubes Bruh, even if you were rich you wouldn’t be able to buy this car for 2Billion. You need to be a certified Ferrari owner with many Ferrari’s already in your collection and then you’ll be put in a list where you have to wait and they have to choose you to be able to buy this car. Good luck finding an original one in good condition as well.
David's laugh is so contagious lol 😊
I love how Lee is constantly checking the gauges when Jay was driving. LOL.
@gilbert martinez you haven't seen the rest of david lees ferrari collection have you
@gilbert martinez hes filthy rich lol, he just cares for his cars (everyone would do this if someone drives his own F40)
Here is the only thing you need to know about this car…
I have been listening to Jay talk about cars on various formats for over 20 years now. He has a wonderful collection of cars he owns and he has driven and shared his experiences with countless other cars.
This is the most excited I have ever seen Jay driving a car…ever.
