When Star Wars is more technobabbly than Star Trek you know something went wrong.
Star Wars: The Force (or the "M" word)
STD: S P A C E M O L D
I like the Walker visually. It looks almost NXesque with bits of Akira. I like the texturing and detail, you really do get a sense of it being the Miranda predecessor visually and what little we saw if the Shinzo in action. More technical info would be nice whenever we get to it.
If someone told me it's a DS9 era ship, I would've believed it all day long mate!
The position of the bridge below the saucer and the aerodynamic shape of the hull might suggest a ship designed with planetary exploration and surface operations in mind.
which makes sense, we know they go into the atmosphere
Also Discovery seems perfectly fine sitting there on invisible legs for hours - which sort of raises the issue of why ships need landing legs then.
@@90lancaster Complete power loss?
@@randomlyentertaining8287 Disco might be a bit unusual in that she has power to burn.
So far, this is my favorite Eaglemoss model. It's twice the size of their standard Trek models, has incredible details and a superb paint job.
We got to see what it was like serving on a Miranda class in the first two episodes of Disco
but the miranda class wasn't invented till after this period!!! It first appears as a relatively recent ship class in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, then appears several times in TNG!!!
I love the Walker class... much better than whatever Discovery is
Discovery is a dumpster fire class
@@michaeldecuffa8762 Crossfield class, the discovery is a Crossfield class refitted with a spore drive or as i call it, the HIGH WAY drive
Just got my own Shenzhou from Eaglemoss just yesterday. The ship is very well made, designed and detailed. It joins my Defiant, Thunderchild and Klingon Bird of Prey on my sci-fi collectibles shelf. I was disappointed at the lack of ship capabilities listed in the little magazine accompanying the ship. Overall, a beautiful addition to the Star Trek ships collection.
Something else to note about this. If the details Eaglemoss were given are correct (and I'm certain they are) this thing is MASSIVE compared to the TOS era stuff. The scaling in this show doesn't fit previous shows, but fits perfectly along side the JJ/Kelvinverse scales so take from that what you will. The Discovery is longer than a Sovereign. Hell, it's longer than the JJPrise! Internal volume isn't quite there but it's still a pretty big ship. The inner saucer is about as big as a Connie saucer for some idea of scale.
funny thing about that? The constitution was supposed to be massive and that was a big deal..
It was, for the time. Considering at the time Star Trek first aired the biggest thing we'd sent into space were a few small satellites and some capsules. Something the size of a contemporary aircraft carrier zipping about in space would be considered massive to audiences of the time.
It was supposed to be for the federation as well. One of its biggest vessels.
See, if they had just said "This is part of the JJverse, that would solve so many problems. Still not great, like those movies, but better.
Saying "this is part of the same canon as 60s Kirk" just kills any ability to set aside disbelief and watch.
I watched 3 episodes of STD and said, enough.
"A jack of all trades and master of none is better than a master of one." - the full quote.
Great looking ship really love its design think its too advanced looking for the era its based in and a little too alien looking with its paint job to be fully accepted as starfleet. Perhaps it could have been an early attempt at a federation ship and for this reason it had motifs using tellerite and andorian design principles? love this ship exterior not keen at all on interior and scaling i think is off for the era but never the less beauty of a ship to look at
Gerald Ward well, “alien” I think is a good thing, because the federation can’t just be a human-centric organization.
In the first scene when the bridge was first shown it was surreal to hear the TOS era bridge sound effects with the cutting edge visuals.
While I do like the Walker class, my personal favorites are the Crossfield, Shepard, and Cardenas classes.
+Danny Holocker I look forward to doing them
:] While I'm at it, the Engle class doesn't look too bad either (runner-up in my Disco favorites)
@@dannyh13100 If only someone who can actually build worth a damn could build the Engle Class in Space Engineers. Then we'd have a complete set. (And I do know someone has built a FRAME of it but so far no one has built a complete Engle class
And here I thought phased cannons were supposed to be 22nd century beam weapons.
Phasers also apparently invented by 2233 and this ship class was supposed to be commissioned by then, so it shouldn't really be armed with "Phased Cannons".
Don't worry, I'm not holding this against you, though. Star Trek Discovery has left many gaping holes in continuity and this is just a drop in that ocean.
The history of phasers has already been subject to retcons and inconsistencies. Possibly only pulse phasers existed in 2233?
"I cant stand the series, but i do love the ships and visuals."
That just about sums up my feelings. The prop department and some of the writing team must have been avid fans of Star Trek... and then the main writers were imported from somewhere else. Season one Game of Thrones like you said, while Season 2 feels like Doctor Who.
The Walker was first mentioned by name in a 90s TOS novel that had flashbacks to Donatu V alongside the Shepard. They were described as ageing patrol ships then and that's almost a decade before Discovery. My theory is that the Federation of this period was expanding so quickly that Starfleet was struggling to keep up with demand for multipurpose Starships to serve that territory. That is why the Walkers, Yegears and Shepards are still in service with a haphazard mix of outdated tech. More like the Russian or Chinese Navy than the British or US utilising that ancient Russian wisdom (according to Chekov) that if it ain't broke don't fix it.
All these new ships look WAY more advanced than they should
Tbh the Walker and Crossfield classes are such cool sihps and i hope atleast the Walker comes back at some point.
It LOOKS like a great successor to the Miranda class, which is why it is a shame they wrote it as a predecessor. Why do they keep trying to change the past instead of forging into the future?
The bridge is also on the underside of the saucer, unlike most ships. The design seems to be slightly influenced by the NX class. We saw more in the Mirror Universe with the ISS Shenzhou.
I have a 1:2500 scale model of this ship and plan to light it, thank you for this post it helps me to see where things are like windows lol. I know I could just watch Discovery, but for some odd reason, it won't play on my phone from Paramount+. Yeah it plays on my TV but my phone shows me better close ups. Thanks for the post and wish me luck.
I want to see someone go through and Discovery up the Oberth, Miranda, and Constitution classes. Y'know, cover them with unnecessary gribblies and do-dads, divide the ship up into weird segments with staggered deck placements, use some stock CGI model skins from Enterprise then splash it in some awkward lighting and voila: Discovery style TOS ships!
Honestly I hate how much this series plays it fast and loose with tech and canon, saying it's in the prime universe then going for the JJ-verse. I hate the ship designs too, it's like if some angry white kids didn't like the soft hippie feel of Next Generation and started drawing what they thought Federation warships would look like. Still, it's what we got and it's not like I could do any better. Not yet anyways.
Well, we got to see what the Discovery Constitution looks like. Now we need to see what the Miranda and Oberth.
One thing i love is the battle senses between ships. Best part of sci-fi.
Looks better than the Miranda but it’s more of a Red Shirt than the Miranda seeing as it doesn’t have any shielding as far as I know
Probable explanation of why the deck breach: the bridge was a small air pocket with most of the rest exposed to vacuum. Is a more common situation in stories where force fields are not that common or don't even exist. Maybe the reason why it was so 'dramatic' was that they couldn't reach the escape pods and the writers didn't found a way to say it in the scene.
+Lore Reloaded Where did you get your time estimates? I don't see how it could be from the 30's or early 40's and be considered old. I had figured it was from either the late 22nd century, or early 23rd. I'd have put it between 2190 and 2220 (my personal guess being around 2216-2221), with some refits since then. Hard to date it though, when considering John Eaves designed it based off a 24th century design he already had. So do you have an official source for the time-frame you stated?
At 00:10...is that video of the Eaglemoss ship? Because mine looks nothing like that. The colors on mine are no where near as vivid.
i love this ship, it looks sweet, and has a somewhat hotrod feel to id, when i first got my eaglemoss ship and placed it neatly in myshowcase i was so so happy, love it ... also loved the captain that came with it
It does blend quite nicely with the Centaur Class, perhaps a forerunner if not in design then in purpose.
I really like the look of the walker class
NivekH 420 It looks like a Centaur class
The Walker class just looks like the Centaur Class from Star Trek Online - awesome!
At least it looks like it belongs in star trek. Discovery looks like someone just slapped together some basic geometric shapes and called it a day
I've looked through the ships of Eaglemoss ... is it possible that they have the Ferengi ship backwards? (like some other toy manufactures too)
I just can't get past the Nacelles not looking right for the era.
SeriousStoners its pre-klingon war. Even towards the end of the series they started going more traditional.
Nothing about this show is right for the era.
The era isn't right for the show.. oh wait whhaaaat? 👏🏿🤔
I recently got a good look at the Walker Class via a model, & I have a question for the Lore Master & everyone else here: Is it me, or does this ship look...kinda Romulan, like they built it as a Trojan Horse, but only after briefly eyeballing a few Federation ships? IDK, maybe it's me, but I look at it, & the Romulans come to mind. What does everyone else think? Please, I appreciate the feedback, any feedback.
If the Miranda is the basic version of the Constitution, then the Walker class looks like the basic version of a Sovereign.
The miranda utilizes the parts of the constitution and effectively works in similar ways ..how is this similar ?
Fun fact: The hull breach shown in the video would have seen shrapnel throughout the bridge, shredding most in its path before the vacuum would have sucked it back out to space. Shrapnel and spalling moves at the speed of a bullet. The whole emergency shields at this timeline seems really out of place as well. Even Constitution class ships only had emergency bulkheads and it wasn't until the Excelsior class did we see anything like it. Plus they were SLOW to activate. Hell they were slow to activate on the Sovereign class Enterprise E when the bridge had a hull breach and sucked the conn officer into space.
Yea, that's something I didn't think about.. Expanse does 'realism' a lot, lot better..
I give the Expanse a lot of credit but at the same time it has it's own issues.
Ever notice how they only use "hard" ammo and no energy or radiation based weapons? It's 2017 and we're already putting lasers on ships. No ECM, no anti-missile missiles, no energy based CIWS, no armor (even WWII planes had some armor), etc etc. If you were to make an Arleigh Burke US destroyer airtight is would probably out fight many of the ships from the Expanse.
I still say it looks like something the Romulans built as a Trojan Horse, but it's grown on me.
I think the Walker Class is a sleeker version of the Miranda.
agreed
I personally love the walker class, I feel this would of been a much better hero ship then the crossfield.
I feel it bridges the gap between ENT and disc very well for me and feels like a natural progression for Starfleet after the success of the nx class, can't wait to add this to my collection of nx class ships.
Drexler's muscle car hood-scoop and fenders taken to the extreme. The deflector dish should be pointing forward and not up.
What about the Miranda Class?
This model is so gorgeus! Giveaway would be perfect.. for my colection at least :D
Gonna see what I can do ;)
I agree this ship model is just awesome
Recently Star Trek Online added the Walker Class as well as the Crossfield Class to the game. While full technical information isn't available in game. It is a game after all, the developers have been very good at least getting details correct. From what has been released it appears all the "Phasers" seen in the "Battle Of The Binary-Stars" were full phaser arrays. They were given the pulse effect seen in the Reboot movies due to licencing and production restrictions. Paramount produced the series and uses effects and "Tech" they owned visual rights to, as not to spend money on licensing visuals from CBS as the rights to Trek are split between the two. In the end it comes down to money.
Star Trek Online is not considered strictly Canon and we would disagree that they get technical information accurate as they are an MMO and what you can outfit a Constitution class with is.. by far.. not what you could do in canon.
I am with you. I've never watched any of this series, but I gotta love the ships.
They are very pretty
Well The Magee Class is the one the other ships hang around with to make them look better.
Cardenas is one of the coolest looking though the bridge placement is kinda suicidal.
Nimitz class (Europa) is the one i'm keen to have in hand and see what it looks like from all angles.
The Klingon ships (mostly) look like they belong to another race entirely - heck one of them looks rather Like a Cardassian Hideki class.
I really like this ship it's design is amazing.
I would not be surprised if the Walker-class was related to another ship-class we already know. I remember reading somewhere, though I can't find it again and I don't think it was canon, that the Nebula-class is considered a successor to the Miranda-class. Those two definitely share a lot in terms of appearance, and if they really are related, then that would give a precedent to outdated ship-classes being used alongside new models.
The Nebula has the same CONFIGURATION as the Miranda, as the NX has the same configuration as the Akira. That doesn't make it a direct successor though. The Centaur-class could also be called a Miranda successor, maybe more accurately.
Chris sonofPear it’s not it’s look that made the nebula the successor it was its purpose the nebula was a multi role ship designed for exploration battle medical you name it.
True, it's a good all rounder. The Centaur seems very cramped, according to Adam Buckner, it's designer. Don't know how rounded the Walker would be.
Like the ship, look awesome
You the man!
Great vid as always lore! My thoughts on the ship are thus, as oddly non canon to the star trek tos Era build designs that the the shows ships 'show' I can jive with the walker class being ahead of its time a little bit. Being 125 or close years old as a ship class puts it after 'enterprise' Era which would mean one of the first groups of full federation supported ship design and building. All the sleek lines and angles that look vaguely familiar to the nx design mentality, we would see again in the 2200's but this ship had more andorian, tellerite, vulcan and more space faring races assisting. Then 100 years later design fashion starts going back the classic geometry of 'cigars' and saucers for the bigger cruisers like the 'connie's, Miranda' and the like. Everything looks great but the show is sucking hard to like more than an epic or two the rate they're writing keeps going; and that's even worth an open mind as well!
.....It's nice looking. As to the show...It has Star Trek in the title.
Indeed, that good or bad?
Lore Reloaded My news year's resolution was to try to be nicer about things other people like. So not sh!t posting. All in all I rank it last in all of Star Trek.
Lore Reloaded LOL, Thank you!
Same here. I can't get hooked on it like DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise. It just feels...not Star Trek. Heck the J.J. movies felt more Star Trek than this. It is a shame because the ships like the Walker do look cool.
SonicArtemis117 Have you tried The Orville? I get TOS vibes from it. Well a bit goofier.
If it weren't for the fact Discovery is a prequel, I'd say that the Walker looked like a beefed up Centaur. Shame Discovery is, however.
Here's a question I have, are there no beam banks in the Discovery series? I haven't seen a single ship fire them so where they not made yet?
If I had the chance to name my own walker class ship. I'd name it Paul. I also like the idea of an "starfleet ship ATAT, walker class."
I do like the design. Far better than some of the others in the series.
agreed
i think the Walker class is great...
I don't mind the show, but I'm frustrated by it's lack of ship well anything.
Agreed..
I was thinking, from its name, that this was going to be some terrestrial federation ship with legs.
Love most of your videos. But as I'm not paying a fee to watch star trek discovery, would you mind adding something in the title to indicate those videos? If not I will trudge along best I can
Well I try to add enough information so that you don't have to watch the actual videos.. Are you just not wanting to see it because its discovery? I'm not really down with adding something to the title, but a disclaimer in the description I could do..
@@LoreReloaded yes I can't be the only one who wont / can't watch discovery until it's free anote anywhere would be fine ty very much
Hmmm something about ur model seems more detailed than mine. urs has white decals where they are just a lighter grey on mine. Otherwise great episode. Love to see one on the sheperd class
Will be getting them all.. This was from the eaglemoss website - mine is the same as yours.
Lore Reloaded ok
It most likely looks white because he'll have lit it more for the image. It's hard photographing light grey accurately!
Two thumbs up for the USS Shenzhou.
When I look closely at this ship compared to its Star Trek Online counterpart Perseus class they look relatively similar in design
Tactical - cut down power to lense flare generators and transfer power to the weapons - the additional 80% power boost should give us enough punch to blast through their shields.
Also their bridge on deck 7 was breached did u miss the scene where a projectile hit the bridge and disabled the ship?
The problem with the Discovery series to me is it seems to fall somewhere between the original and JJ-verse timelines, it's a bit of a hash up, and a messy one at that.
the federations hips look cool, the other species ships do not. discovery is just not doing it for me.
confirmed: Miranda class is a "minor refit" of the Walker class
The Walker class is a good-looking ship. as well as other ships from STD (with the exception of the USS Discovery, in my personal opinion). However, the Walker class , as well as the other STD ships, would have fit better in a post Voyager era.
The Walker Class looks like a more beefier Centaur Class
Discovery is as if you woke up to find your pillow soaked in bloody vomit.
I have a feeling that Eglemoss is going to be the standard for Star Trek model collections. I am thinking about investing in it is my primary collectibles. I have yet to choose one. I invested in several card types, but those are too easy (a hard learned lesson) for one break-in to entirely steal.
It looks like a Centaur-class if it was designed for the Star Wars prequels instead of Star Trek.
I find the ship to look really aggressive. I can't help it, but the much more spikey design than what we are used to makes it look more aggressive to me. Plus the aft view reminds me of an insect somehow...
I think the ship really looks like if during a production meeting the designers showed the ship and the producer went and just flipped it upside down. That would explain why the bridge is at the bottom and the nacelles are too, which is reverse to most other designs we know. AFAIK that is actually what happened with the original series - the designers presented the Enterprise upside-down first and Roddenberry flipped it over, liking it better that way... and a century-spanning design element was born.
The Eaglemoss magazine for the Shenzo show John Eaves' concept drawings and they started with bride and nacelles topside. So,yes he did flip the design over to come up with this! The concept design with topside bridge/nacelles became the Shepard class.
Great looking ship! A little weak, but the visual, as you said, is good.
You know, if the show was made as a continuation of the franchise, you could say this was a beefed up Centaur class... But nooo, they had to make this a prequel show...
I love std everyrhing about it lol and i play sto and uss the discovery ship cause i play a science officer but the walker class ship is my fav by far has more a trek feel to it than the other ships in my opinion...
If they changed the nacelles to a more enterprise era look, i would have liked it much more.
I love the walker class, or in love with the dorsal mounted bridge. ^^ probably the latter. >< the space frame kinda reminds me Miranda class starships, and I enjoy that, with the feeling of the nx class. ^^
While I absolutely despise almost everything related to STD, I must admit that except the abomination Crossfield class, Federation ships in the series look really pleasant. Not fitting into lore, but just look nice. My personal favorite is Gagarin, it's a real beauty, but like the rest looks more fitting for post TNG era, not pre TOS.
I don;t like the Discovery's aesthetic. Too many angled edges, protruding geometries, assembly joints, and excessive decals. This is not how Star trek build their ships, Trek's design from ship to uniform (fed uniform never has things like golden lining or other excessive rank imposing features) used to be elegant, modest, enigmatic and sleek, it withdraw from boasting extravagant or intimidation. While this ship is in itself is a good design, it is however not implemented in authentic Star Trek design principle.
Lol I think Discovery is their most beautiful ship
0:40 - no...im pretty sure its bad
It had no shields I think it is AWESOME ship
Can you do Andromeda ships?
The design of this ship would have better fittet a later period of Starfleet like maybe the 25th century or so. But like this is does what Discovery as a whole does, trying to rewrite and redesign the exsisting time in Star Trek.
Good Lord, the Walker Class is beautiful.
Wait a minute...something is off on this Akira class...I don't think this is an Akira class.
Still a pretty ship in a show I refuse to watch and a good looking model.
You're getting an akira class today as well.. YAYAYAYAYAY
The design works if they developed the show to be 50 years before kirk or after nemesis
I really want to like it, but havent been able to. I honestly wish they just said it was another alternate timeline or just call it a reboot. That would solve so many questions.
Well it's a ship from 30 (maybe more) years before TOS if that helps at all.
(I suspect not really as it looks like the rest of the fleet which is going to be a variety of ages - they all have rectilinear nacelles)
@Jim Knight still wish this was set in another universe or just renamed the show to Tardigrades ... ooops too far. SUE YOU CBS
Apart from the deflector which i still find kinda ok, i think the Walker Class looks amazing.
Anti Trekker calls it the 'lipstick ship'
I heard it was inspired by the dish on the Columbia NX-02.
Game of thrones style Star Trek ? The budget would be insane!
the budget is insane.
I've always been kind of partial to starships with underslung nacelles, ever since I saw the USS Reliant in STII.
The Shenzhou should of been the Discovery and the Discovery the Shenzhou. She would have been a wonderful "hero ship".
Its all bs until Chuck Noris gets his own class of shipps!!!!!!!
Chuck Norris wears Captain Sisko pajamas.
Legit tho ive seen people only disliking ship designs because of well how they look. But just think of this. If ur a captain and u had to go into battle, would you rather:
1) captain a ugly ship with very high battle capabilities
Or
2) captain a esthetically marvelous ship with hella low battle capabilities
*Note: before anyone tries to go all big brain thinking they are smart, u cant choose "or", cant modify the choices to be beautiful ship with high battle capabilities, and captain skills dont count as well as crew member skills so only ship capabilities*
That ship is now on Star Trek Online.
Completely missing that it's a sequel to the NX Class and precursor to the Akira class
Wait, they named a ship after Picard's evil twin, before... Picard was born?
I appreciate that youre doing DSC content.
We all have issues with the series, but all trek has had its issues. The only reason to spurn it is being out of touch and hating change.
I agree
Some people just don't like the story structure, or that it isn't Ensemble based.
I like her, nice, tough and will keep her crew alive as was proven at the Binaries
The water class looks almost insect-like. It looks like a jem'hadar fighter that uses Federation technology. It's indicative of this new type of narrative Direction and stylized fiction. It's like everything by Michael Bay all Style no substance.
Mike Vasquez Fed-Bug instead of Jem-Bug.
I like the design of the ship but I cant help think that if the bridge was located on the top of the ship and the nacelles were a lot more cylindrical to match the period of time in which this ship was supposed to be set, it would have been better. However, I think the lore of the ship ultimately ruins it for me, If ST:D was set in a period of time, say roughly 100 years after Nemesis, then the Walker class would definitely be a hit for me.
Yea, I think they tried to have an 'nx-01' vibe with it.. which would explain why its so old as well.
I don't mind most of the design, except for the nacelle shape and length, and the scale, which might not be consistent anyway.
I would just like to mention, it's ST: DSC, not STD or ST:D
People call it STD just to be cruel.
If they are like me "Mildly Mocking" then they Go with DISCO instead.
ENT, VOY and so on only really make any sense in lists of episode numbers or such other wise you may just as easily say Discovery or Voyager.
Though I suppose they have some small use to say you mean the show and not the object the show is named after.
