Vtec Solenoid Gasket Replacement

  • In this video I'll be replacing the Vtec solenoid gasket on a 2002 Honda Accord 2.3L. Vtech solenoid gaskets are very common for leaking oil. This one is no exception. It was leaking very badly for some time. The the gaskets are made of rubber and usually become very hard after many years of being exposed to very hot temperatures. As they get hard they loose their ability to seal.
The method I use in this video, as mentioned in the video, is not "by the book". Its a short cut. By doing it this way taking the thermostat housing and the EGR valve off will not be needed.
There is a draw back to doing it this way though. As mentioned in the video, you will not have enough room to get to the 3 bolts that hold the Vtec solenoid to the cylinder head with a torque wrench. This may prevent proper torquing of the bolts resulting in an oil leak potentially catastrophic engine damage. (As in you may ruin you engine if all the oil leaks out due to this oil leak).....SO DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I make no guarantees that by using this video you will make a quality repair. However, if your mechanically inclined and are experienced in auto repair then this video may help.
As for what to use to clean the mating surfaces of the Vtec solenoid and the cylinder head, I would recommend something equivalent to Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty scour pads. (NOTE: WASH SOME DISHES WITH SCOURING PAD FOR AT LEASE A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE USING. THIS WILL SOFTEN THEM UP. INITIALLY THEY ARE A LITTLE HARD. ALSO WET THE PAD WITH BRAKE CLEAN BEFORE USING) They are green and should not be too abrasive as to cause deep scratches on the mating surfaces. I wouldn't go with a metal scouring pad or anything more abrasive that the Scotch-Brite pads. Note: only use very light pressure when cleaning surfaces. Use scouring pad on another like surface that isn't a mating surface to insure the pad used does not damage the surface before cleaning mating surfaces. If it damages the surface then use something lighter and repeat test.
Here is a link to a web page showing the recommended scour pad.

Here is a link to a video showing other methods of cleaning mating surfaces on engines and engine parts.

I followed your video to do my gaskets today. I could not get the bolts out following your video, not your fault I am 72 years old and my strength in my hands is gone. So I removed the Thermostat housing and got the bolts out pretty easy. Put all back together with no issues, took me all day but in the end total success! Your video was excellent! Hands down the best video on the internet for this specific repair. I just HAD to do this repair myself and it was a real pain in the neck. Nothing about this repair is complex, its using all of your tools, wrenches and angles to to get to the bolts in a very narrow space. You might as well replace the coolant hose from the therm housing to the heater core (connected to the firewall )... mine was swollen and ready to burst and removing that hose gives you a little more clearance to work.
Thanks again for an amazing video guide.

If you’re reading this before you do this job, save yourself the trouble, remove the air box, unplug all the sensors, take out the egr valve, and cut a 10mm wrench to be about 5 inches long, and remove the coolant hose from the therm housing

Best video I've found for this job
*UPDATE - Just did this job. One thing I’d add is you don’t have to fabricate the shortened/shaved 10 mm wrench. A Pittsburgh offset 10 mm I bought as part of a set at Harbor Freight fit great and had plenty of leverage to get the lower bolt out (in fact great for all 3 of them). I did remove the EGR valve which made things easier, just have a new gasket.

Just finished this job, 17 Mar 2024. A few tips: 1. Remove the EGR. 2. For the lower bolt, I used a shallow socket with a 6 pt back mounted on a 11mm wrench. Part No GM4234 at O'Reilly. Gave enough space to put plenty of leverage on the wrench. I suppose a 10mm socket wrench would work just fine as well. 3. Clean it well, and be patient. Working those bolts out using your fingertips takes time. 4. Have your magnet ready.

Thanks so much for a very detailed, helpful video. I followed all your instruction and everything worked great. I would like to add just a couple of things that ( to me) made it easier.
I used a 3 inch 10mm wrench for the bottom bolt( difficult to see and get to) . Also I used a stubby 3 inch mini ratchet for the other two. And finally I found it very helpful to remove the EG valve just to open up some space around that area. Thank you so much for this video.

Honda Accord 2002 - V4 - 2.3L Engine - 200,000 mi. I'll start with the result. The car runs better. It took me 16. hrs. approx. I worked on my car for the first time. Tools you will need: Socket Wrench, I think mine is 3/8, Husky (brand). Get a normal size socket wrench and a mini/small one. That is two Socket Wrenches. A 12mm socket proper and a couple or few 10 mm sockets proper. I lost one. It's somehwere underneath the hood. I don't think it will damage the engine, hopefully it falls out somewhere. Oh, you will also need a deep 21 mm socket. And you will need a socket wrench extension - like the one used to take out spark plugs - to take off the EGR valve. The 12 mm socket attached to the socket wrench will unbolt the EGR valve and the 10 mm socket attached to the mini Socket wrench will unbolt the Solenoid. The 21 mm socket will unbolt the Oil pressure switch. Also, get a stubby 10 mm wrench. that has the teeth on the other side to rap around the bolt head, not a suggestion. but a must. Google for terms. Use gloves for at least two reasons. Your hands will get dirty. Use separate gloves that have grip to unbolt. My hands were oily as were the tools and that made it almost impossible to unbolt. Gloves will give you a grip where you lack leverage. You will lack some leverage but don't fret. You have to take off the EGR valve first to get to the Solenoid. I didn't take out my air intake duct. Removing the air intake duct would have made things easier. Also, unhook the terminals to what the man in the video refers to as the harness (2:40). Like the man in the video said it will give you a little more room and flexibilty. Remember, my tools and job was for a V4 2.3L Engine. I think, I unbolted, a total of 8 bolts. I changed out the solenoid that came with the gaskets and the oil presure switch. I didn't change out the gaskets or oil pressure swtich separately. You got this champ!

Great video on changing the Vtec solenoid gasket or the part itself! THANK YOU! AND SUBSCRIBED! You can also use the rough side of a dishwashing sponge to clean the surfaces of the VTEC solenoid itself and where it goes to. For the bottom nut, I think a swivel 1/4-in rachet should do it? I would also clean the entire area before putting back the Vtec solenoid.

Keith, outstanding and very professional vid in everyway---among the very best car fix vids I've come across---likewise liked and subscribed. Lots of vids out here on this job but yours was so thorough in detail it gave me the courage to try it. My gaskets just didn't look bad at all so can only help regardless this stops the leak which was coming from this side. How many mile to you find it takes before these are bad is this is such a common issue----------my Honda has 130,000I had no problem with the bolt below the electrical and did not have to cut down my 10MM to do it but I had a hell of a problem with the back one next to the EGR. You dropped your drive in there with no issues of clearance but I just could never get mine to fit in that clearance---don't know if you had a thinner drive or shorter socket than me so I don't get it why you got to it with such ease. I had to remove and put that bolt with a box end and with such a short turn distance took me 30 minute + both out and in. If I have to get in this again ill have to buy another tool perhaps ill never use again (but can justify it since saved the cost of shop doing the job) ie a ratcheting wrench that takes a socket---------$15 at HF------since that would fit in that clearance and saved me $15+++++++ of grief. Thanks again for the great vid---I'll be reviewing your others
