    I never knew or understood until now that people could build or replace parts of a wheel. I always had thrown away my bicycle wheel when it went bad and I end up buying a whole new wheel with the free wheel (freewheel) or cassette as well. Now I know that four basic components of a bicycle wheel (Rim, Spokes & Nipples, Hub and Freewheel or Cassette) can be replace rather than discarding the whole wheel. :) Excellent explanatory & demonstration video! Thank you for posting this excellent explanatory & demonstration video! :)

    Thanks, great video and easy to understand. I like the fast forward and the stopping and showing close moments. Now this looks so easy ... let´s do it myself :) Thank you for the effort of putting this together.

    VERY GOOD VIDEO
    The hub used here IS the generator guys !!! The generator is in the hub, you will notice a power plug coming out of it.
    When you buy this type of generator, you have no choice but to rebuild your wheel from the spokes to the rims !!!!
    This video also applies to building a wheel from a regular hub (non-generator) !!!!!

    Haha! The comments here are amazing! The world is full of such bright people! Personally I was expecting you to build a nuclear power plant inside a bicycle wheel, and was a little disappointed that you didn't. Was it because plutonium is hard to find? But anyway, since I am also installing a generator hub in my bike wheel, it was a very useful video! Thanks!

    This was great. I was looking at power generating hubs but had no idea if I had to buy a new wheel with one pre-installed or if I could add it to my existing wheel. This vid allowed me to understand hub replacement and boosted my confidence to attempt it myself.
    How about doing one for a conversion to an internal gear rear hub (+ whatever is needed overall) ?

    • @CantitoeRoad
      @CantitoeRoad  10 років тому +2

      Hi Dan, There's so much going on inside an internally geared rear hub (see Sheldon Brown's excellent explanation: sheldonbrown.com/internal-gears.html) that there's simply no room for all the mechanical components involved in a dynamo hub. Best to leave power transmission to the rear hub and electricity generation to the front.

    • @BlockCylinder
      @BlockCylinder 9 років тому +1

      I think Dan might have meant converting a derailleur bike to an internally geared hub. The process of building the wheel is the same, Dan. Converting the bike introduces more variables. Shimano gear hubs require a few additional small parts which are included with some models but not others. I think all Sturmey hubs come with their small parts. Then of course you'll need a cable and a shifter, and you'll need to route the shift cable. Routing may require some creativity if the frame was made with a derailleur in mind.

    You use a tool, to check the tension of the spokes, what exactly is that? Does it have a measuring dial, or what exactly and how exactly do you check the tension? do you have a link to the manufacturer of that device?

    The only thing that makes me really afraid and worried of death is;-Am I going to find a good bike there in that other world to ride it 6 hours a day or not?If not,well,that would be a real hell to me.

    I am planning to use my bike soon enough for delivery with Doordash and Uber Eats. I might want a generator bike wheel to recharge my battery packs. My bike was bought at $675 in 2014 and has none of it. I'd like to upgrade my bike to recharge battery packs that I mount on the back of it. Because it will keep my phone charged and my vape batteries charged.

    • @EspenFrafalne
      @EspenFrafalne 4 роки тому

      My nitecore charger for my 18650 batteries needs 9V, and most dynohubs only generate 6V... If you vape at 150 watts and 1 set of batteries is not enough for a work day, then just bring an extra set of batteries to work. I vape the Aegis Legend (like i saw you had in a video), and it lasts me the entire day when i vape at 64 watts.
      If you bring a pod to work (i have the "smoant pasito" rebuildable pod, and it is actually pretty decent), then you can charge it with a regular battery bank, and if you have one with 2 outputs, you can charge your phone and pod simultaneously...

    Simple stuff,don't know why people think there is some sort of black magic to it? Maybe it's because of people tensioning the spokes by ear and matching the tone when pinged? Always built my own. My jig is an old pair of forks and a couple of pointers and a digital calliper. Tension gauge was bought second hand from aircraft industry.

    Where is the generator? - is a FAQ in all the comments.
    Well, a dynamo, which they are building in that wheel, is an electric generator.
    But, you will be disappointed when you try to turn that wheel with the axle in your hands! It is g e n e r a t i n g a lot of resistance - also at daylight ... - and your wheel will stop turning very soon. It is a brake on your bike. Then look out for a road racing bike of someone and give it's wheel a turn. You will see.

    No information about the price of the generator hub (US$150) or the wheel (US$400); but, if you didn't want to add the expense of a 6-volt battery to power your bicycle's headlight and taillight, I'd guess that this is a solution to your problem. Then, too, this generator wouldn't store any power. If your bicycle isn't moving, no power, and, thus, no headlight and no taillight, unless one adds a 6-volt battery.
    I'm not certain as to why anyone wants to spend $150 just to charge up a 6-volt battery while riding their bicycle, if it's only to power up the headlight and taillight. This looks like a lot of expense and work for what a rechargeable battery pack could do.

    • @conniemullin5998
      @conniemullin5998 7 років тому

      Kevin Engele+ yes that would be a great idea however he's not building a wheel for a turbine, he's building a wheel for a bicycle, it's a dynamo hub, it generates electricity when your rolling down the road to power lights & such, so to install a dynamo hub your rim needs to be dismantled removing your standard hub and then rebuilt using the dynamo generator hub

    Before buying this stuff, take a look here: www.cyclingabout.com/best-dynamo-usb-chargers-bicycle-touring-bikepacking/
    Excerpt:
    --------------------------------------------------
    "Example One: 2.5-Watts (12.5km/h on the Cinq Plug5 Plus)
    Once a 3-watt dynamo hub has been converted from AC to DC the output will translate to roughly 5V and 0.5A, which for an hour of riding is 500mAh. Charging a 5000mAh battery will, therefore, equate to 10 hours of riding. However, when we factor in the small losses in the charging circuitry, we lose around 20% of the total generated power. Adding the 20% extra ride time (10 hours + (10 hours x 0.2)) and we’re looking at 12 hours of riding to fill the battery from scratch.
    Example Two: 4-Watts (17km/h on the Cinq Plug5 Plus)
    If we use fancy circuitry to boost the output power to 4-watts (5V and 0.8A), we can fill a 5000mAh battery in 6.25 hours of riding. When we account for the ~20% losses in the charging circuitry, this results in 7.5 hours of riding to theoretically fill the battery from scratch."
    -------------------------------------------------
    This was not as good as i was expecting, so i will definitely have to do some "circus tricks" and use a GPS that uses AA batteries (which i can get almost anywhere. Phones drains a LOT more power), and a camera that uses AA batteries. That way i can leave my phone turned off most of the time.
    I would think a 15-20watt solar panel will be better alternative for me (both options would be ideal, but the dynohub seems a bit complicated and expensive). I will mostly just use my phone to upload a few pictures to FB, so i will mostly "need" power to watch some videos on my smart-glasses (a 7000mah battery bank would last about 8 hours of video time, if i take into account the 20% power loss, like in the example above)... Im guessing a 15-20W solar panel should have me covered, and if it is not fully enough, it will not be something important i need it for anyway...
