Hi, I'm Joëlle, bicycle mechanic and trainer at the CyCLO DIY workshop in Brussels. A few days ago, I passed a qualification exam of wheelbuilding. The wheel fulfilled almost all of the jury's requirements. I obtained 95%, because a wheel can never be perfect ;-) Dear Calvin and Truman, THANK YOU very much for the great videos! Always very instructive and nice to watch. Let's keep learning👩🔧
I did it! First time building wheels and it has become another fun part of my hobby. Tried it about 15 years ago but this time was a success. Thanks for the precise and clear instructions.
Well done ! I have many wheels ideas and wanna give it a try hassle free. I'm a good non professional mechanic already, what do you think are mandatory for building wheels, same as suggested in the video ?
This is an exemplary video in every way - production quality, presentation, content, clarity, supporting information... and I see from the comments that other people recognise it too. Six stars! I'm about to rebuild a wheel for the first time with complete confidence.
This is masterclass of not only wheel building, but instructional videos. Followed along step-by-step and built my second wheel. My first one a couple years ago seemed like such a pain.
hi, i ve built a wheel using this tutorial and a couple others. i had to tighten the spokes afterwards 2-3 times after i rode on that wheel but i think i did about 1500 km on that wheel and no spoke broke yet. It has been a fun process for me, i ve built it in a couple of days, i think i worked on it about 30 mins each day. this tutorial has been very helpful to me, its nice because i could follow along while building the wheel.
This has to be one of the best produced videos on bike mechanics I've ever seen. Great editing, voice recording, super simple to understand. Thanks so much for sharing this.
A friend is helping me build a wheel to convert my fixie to a 3-speed. While his help has been great and he suggested I watch this video, his suggestion came AFTER we laced the wheel. I wish I had known about this video first, it was great!
I just put a bike together which I collected from peoples garbage. Spokes were a wreck. Rim all damaged. Found this video and it helped me fix a wheel. New bike from people's garbage. Made it run like new. Thanks to this video.

Wheel building is an amazingly liberating experience!! Was a USCF Cat III many years ago and was on a 250-mile per week regime back in the day. Blew up a wheel on Sunday morning and would be doomed to miss my training ride. So, I cracked a book, de-laced the potato-chipped wheel, got a new MA-40 and replacement spokes and began lacing. The WHOLE KEY was spoke length. From that moment on, I went on a wheel building binge -- even doing it for my team mates! I became a cycling God and the go to wrench for those guys. Nossir! No more begging for autographed water bottles or old jerseys from the arrogant shit Cat IIs on the team! _THEY_ made appointments with me and I made them grovel. I even got one of 'em to give me leadouts on the 30 and over weekly crits in exchange for building him wheels!
Greetings from Germany, I've just ordered the blue book 4th edition. You are doing a great job. Just Built my 6th wheel, two rear with motor and four front wheels. I always com back to your colored setup, which helps a lot. Great explanation. Keep on going with good stuff like this. Dietrich Winsen upon Aller - Lüneburger Heide - Lower Saxony
Great video! I've already built a few wheels myself and was watching to learn any new tips and tricks. One that helps me a lot, but wasn't mentioned here, is to number the spokes after lacing to help keep track during tensioning and truing. I write the spoke number starting at the valve hole in marker pen on the brake-track of each side (in this case 1 to 16). This helps me to remember which spoke I just tightened/loosened and which are loose or tight.
Your wheel building videos are fantastic. It had been 20 years since my last wheel building lesson ended in failure. This time, with your help, I have made wheels that are laterally true, radially true and have proper spoke tension. And the spoke tension values are all within 10% of each other! You have provided excellent videos and tools, thanks!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was given some printed instructions with a different method which worked OK for a front wheel with an instructor standing over me. Flash forward a couple of years, me needing to build a rear wheel without an instructor to correct me and failing miserably on several occasions using the printouts. First time using this video and it laced up marvellously. Chapeau, Park Tool!
I've been a motorcyclist for years but recently just got super into mountain biking. Alongside that I love tinkering and customizing. The idea of building a wheel was the most foreign concept to me but this video gave me a ton of confidence. I really want to try building my own bike now!
Great video i put a new dynamo hub in my 700c rim I used my forks and cable ties as a truing stand Two glass jars with lids and coins as my dishing tool Took me about 4-5 hours my best tool is a spoke key My wheel is super smooth and your video is 100% thank you
I have assembled a wheel in over 20 years. This video is outstanding. Used this to refresh all the details. Put my new hubs, old spokes and old rim together in the time of this video. Did it on the floor of my family room. The dishing and truing will be done on my Park Turing Stand in the garage, on my work bench, on a warmer day.
Thank you ParkTools. This video saved me a bunch of money and is keeping me ridding. I was having issues with my current wheel set, so I figured a spare was in order. After searching internet and being told it would be weeks or months until a new set, i ordered the parts and got to work. It has taken me about two weeks to build the set, only working on in the evenings. I am more than satisfied with my results, I not only learned how to build a strong wheel, but learned what can make a wheel strong and keep it true and reliable. It has been two years since I built up wheels for my GasBike. As per your video, they were 3 cross lacing. Followed instructions, so it was straight forward. Two years later and I am finally getting around to lacing up a wheel for my Ebike. Difference is it is a 2 cross. I went back to your video to review, but was not quite sure if the process was the same, so i started to look at other videos showing a specific 2 lace process. They were completely crap. What I realized how good your video is, so with a minor adaptation it was an easy build. You and Park Tools are to be commended for your superior product.
By far the Best how-to video I've watched, I didn't scream at my phone or try snap it in half from frustration of hearing unnecessary information 😅, many youtubers could learn how to do a how-to from this bloke lol top shelf 👌
Learned wheel lacing the hard way, I have to use one of my older wheels as a reference and repeated practicing in my other old wheel for about 5 times until I'm confident enough to build my new wheel. Done it in about an hour per wheel and realized it's a skill worth learning. Great video for beginners!
Hi, I just wanted to say: We met in Frankfurt in 2022 at the Eurobike and talked a bit, and now I am back again learning from you on UA-cam! Infinite thank you for the knowledge you share here!
In an age where everyone is a critic and cynical I was happy to see people here felt the same as me: this video was just absolutely fantastic. I built a wheel all from this video, having never done it before. This video was clear, complete, AND concise, something extremely rare in this day and age. Well done.
Great wheel building instructions Park Tool. I now have a set of 700c disc gravel wheels that I built, it`s always a good feeling building stuff for yourself. Thanks guys.
I used to be terrified of building a wheel lol. Not anymore. Thank you Park Tool for yet another well done video and tutorial. Can't wait to give it a shot! Will report back to the comments with results.
With the help of this video, i built quite a few wheelset. I built a rare 2020 atomlab pimplite custom wheelset, for my dirt jump bike, and those are the roundest and the straightest wheels i've built so far. When built with a gauge, the wheels were at 130 kgf within a margin of 2% !! I loved doing it. Then i built quite a few downhill wheelsets, a few fixed gear carbon wheelsets, a bmx wheelset, and tried some variations in the lacing process. I'm literally having a blast spending les than an hour and a half for a complete wheelset !!
Just the video I was looking for! I have 2 “still new looking” 21spd Raleigh bikes where many of the spokes on all 4 wheels broke. My local bike shop wouldn't re-spoke them, insisted I just buy new wheels. Well, they no longer make these matching Xrims, so...... I decided to turn this into a DIY job.
Very good video! This helpt me a lot when changing hub on my kids bike for the first time. You can do this without any fancy tools ! If you are going to do this for the firs time i have some good tips. First of all take off the wheel. Take a knife and do a scratch where the spokenuts sits on the spoke, do one on each side of the rim. Take the rubber, hose and rim tape of. Take four papers and write. Left, inserted from inside out Left, inserted from outside in Right, inserted from inside out Right, inserted from outside in. Take a small wrench and skrew clockwise to release some tension on all spokenuts. Then use a screwdriver with a flat key, run it counterclockwise from outside of the rim and release all the spokenuts. When you have the hub free with all the spokes left on it you have to think in the bikes rolling direction. Gear side = right side. Start to take the spokes out and stay to the same side and type of spoke. *Left side inserted from outside and in* gose on the paper with that text and so on. You should end up whit four piles of spokes, one pile on each paper. And between 8-9 spokes/pile. Then continue as the video. When your done and you have all spokes in place you can place the wheel one the bike (upsidedown) Use the screwdriver clockwise and tightening the nut but leave one milimeter left from the scratch. Then you can take two zip ties one on each leg. One on the side of the rim and on over the rim. Then yo have to practice and learn what's happening and tightening the nuts. Use the small wrench now and tightening a little all the way around until the weel is straight and have some tension in the spokes. Sometimes you have to undo on one side to get it right but you will lern ! I did all this in just 2 hours and ended up with a straight rim. Good luck 🤞
I've built about a dozen wheels and I learned so many useful tricks in this video. I used to use a cut off toothpick to put on nipples but the Efficient Velo Tools Mulfinger tool is a metal version that works amazing.
Wow! I've built wheels for 20 years and this is the best explanation for lacing spokes so your pump has the free space it deserves. If your spoke measurements are correct, this video leaves you with a 90% finished wheel in an hour. I only wish I saw this two decades ago.
Best and very accurate video over UA-cam about wheel building which I watch so far. The steps are very similar to wheel building books which I read now about that. Also to stress relief with spoke squizing method is the best to be done.
Great stuff! A little tricky flipping the wheel so much. Just keep track of your spokes and which side they go on during your build. Can’t stress that enough. I also tap the j-bend side of the spokes with a rubber mallet to help seat them
ive built many wheels but not often so its great to have a video like this where i can skip through to the different labeled parts for a quick refresher such as which way to twist the hub on the 3rd set and where to put that first spoke. i always forget those 2 things
Does it actually matter? I can see it is important which side of the flange the elbows go to allow the 1st 2 crosses to not interfere with the path of the spokes.
@@guyaustin5962 if you twist a different way you are going to put a cross over the valve hole, whereas if you put the first spoke in the right spot and twist the right direction you will end up with two parallell spokes next to the valve and none crossing over it, allowing you to put a pump on it easier
@@andreysantos1945 It went great. Its not that hard as you might think. Just keep calm, stay focused and do little steps, have the overall balance in mind when turning a nipple.
I built a wheel. Thanks. It works perfectly. Feels like such an achievement and rewatching the video gives me good feelings on the well done job. I messed up the orientation the first time though lol 🤪
Great video, very very detailed and quickly explained without any useless information. A person who never put a wheel together will definitely be able to do it after watching your video👍, love the videos keep it up✔️✔️
Superb didactics, both in word and image. With other benevolent videos I quickly lost my way. Building a wheel may now become my ultimate passion. Ha! Thanks a lot.
I built a few wheels back in the 80's based on a book by Jobst Brandt called "The Bicycle Wheel" which was a great book but man I would have loved to see it in action like this. I find myself again needing to rebuild one after all these years and am thankful for your demonstration.
Park tool is the best of the best, they make exemplary videos in every way, personally i don't need to take my bike to the shop in order to fix something i just purchase the tools and i'm good to go with the help of park tool ❤❤
Great video... just did my first wheel. I took my time following carefully the steps from the video and managed to achieve even better result than the local bike service. Thanks!
I just built my two first wheels, thanks for the amazing explanations ! I had a single difficulty : it was hard to insert the third and fourth sets of spokes because the diameter of the spokes was really close to diameter of the hub holes, and the taping is even adding a bit of width. To solve that, simply "screw" in your spokes in the hub and once the tapping is passed, it should go fine. I also find it easier to insert 1 spoke and fix it before inserting the next spoke for first and second sets. Thanks, again Park Tool ! I am currently building a cargo bike from scratch and your videos are helping so much !
Jeez this page help you save lots of money i have an electric engine the wheel before was busted and i took the spokes of the wheel and the spokes from another wheel and i got confused when i had to put it back but if i look patiently at your video will be just great i will need a tool like that to measure tension and alignment but great video i will put myself to work tomorrow.
Fantastic video… Been building great wheels for years and still learned a thing or three. Great content and clear directions. This is the kind of stuff that makes UA-cam good. Thank you Park Tools!!

I'm 69 and I just started thinking about learning to true my wheels.
I`m 66 and also thinking about, to build a wheel. And congratulations on your first built.
Congratulations on your first build. I plan to build a set of 26" rim brake MTB wheels soon.
I'm going to follow you probably next year :)

I think someone's cat got frustrated watching this video.
Left, inserted from inside out
Left, inserted from outside in
Right, inserted from inside out
Right, inserted from outside in.
When your done and you have all spokes in place you can place the wheel one the bike (upsidedown)
Use the screwdriver clockwise and tightening the nut but leave one milimeter left from the scratch.
Good luck 🤞

Best and very accurate video over UA-cam about wheel building which I watch so far. The steps are very similar to wheel building books which I read now about that. Also to stress relief with spoke squizing method is the best to be done.
Really nice job of teaching. How enjoyable to watch someone who can really teach a subject. What a pleasure. Thanks
Laced up my first wheel. This tutorial is one of the best out there if not the best.
Great stuff! A little tricky flipping the wheel so much. Just keep track of your spokes and which side they go on during your build. Can’t stress that enough. I also tap the j-bend side of the spokes with a rubber mallet to help seat them
i've build hundreds of wheels, but oil between rim and niples looks like very good idea, thanx
Great video with clear and concise explanation. Built my first wheel after watching this video.
ive built many wheels but not often so its great to have a video like this where i can skip through to the different labeled parts for a quick refresher such as which way to twist the hub on the 3rd set and where to put that first spoke. i always forget those 2 things
Thank you very much for the video, excellent presentation. I've built a weel with no special tools only 2 zip ties a fork and a spoke wrench
I can't tell you how helpful this video was! I just laced my first set of wheels and they came out great. Thanks!
I will try to build my first wheelset within the next weeks. 32 Spokes and 3 Crossings as you did. Thanks for this video giving me confidence
Can u tell me how it went?
@@andreysantos1945 It went great. Its not that hard as you might think. Just keep calm, stay focused and do little steps, have the overall balance in mind when turning a nipple.
I built a wheel. Thanks. It works perfectly. Feels like such an achievement and rewatching the video gives me good feelings on the well done job. I messed up the orientation the first time though lol 🤪
Wow! It makes it so easy! I never thought that it was that easy!
Great video, very very detailed and quickly explained without any useless information. A person who never put a wheel together will definitely be able to do it after watching your video👍, love the videos keep it up✔️✔️
Awesome video guys, thanks so much! Couldn't have done it without you! 😃
20 min video felt like 2, perfect knowledge in such a flow
Best wheel lacing video I have ever seen
Makes me want to go out and get a TM-1 and start building a wheel! Great job! Really, great job.
Superb didactics, both in word and image. With other benevolent videos I quickly lost my way. Building a wheel may now become my ultimate passion. Ha! Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot, this helped me build my new rig up from head to toe!
Best video of relacing on youtube
wheel building de-mystified! this channel really is a one-stop shop for all your bike mechanic needs!
Just built my first wheel using this video, spot on, easy to follow and I have a great wheel. Many thanks for the upload, it's super useful
You guys are rockstars. Videos like this are why all my bike tools are Park Tool!
I built a few wheels back in the 80's based on a book by Jobst Brandt called "The Bicycle Wheel" which was a great book but man I would have loved to see it in action like this. I find myself again needing to rebuild one after all these years and am thankful for your demonstration.
Mission accomplished...many thanks for the outstanding information how to... build your own custom wheel....
Hiyya. I'm at the start of my wheel-building journey. These videos are a fantastic resource both for beginners and improvers. Thank you.
Thanks!
For me this is the most satisfying video and easy to learn
The guide couldn’t be any better! Just built my first ever pair with ease following your steps! Huuuge thumbs up! 💪
Thanks Rark Tool! Just rebuilt my wheels using this guide!
Nice work!
Just built my first wheel this morning using this video ,Great explenations for each step.👍
