I have only purchased the bigger name brands of color pencils for many years, color pencils are some of the most fugitive art supplies I have used. You convinced me to purchase the square Brutfuner pencils for my wife’s coloring books and I have even used them a couple of times creating cards! They really are truly amazing for a budget pencil! I am so appreciative of your reviews and how truthful you are. I do like your mantra of use what you have, I did however buy a less expensive pencils for the coloring books that my wife has started doing for relaxation. She did need the activity more because of her job at the Hospital was extremely stressful and even sitting watching the TV was not doing the job! I hope you are doing well after your trip to NY ! I am looking forward to seeing more of your content. Please take care, be safe and enjoy your day!
Thanks, Lindsay, I got the square 120 set and the Macaron set. I think I proclaimed them 'Glorious!' When I plAyed with them. They are now out on my desk, in short Mason jars, and making me happy. I feel slightly guilty, as I have a bunch of older Prismacolor that used to live in a pitcher, but are boxed. Space is always an issue! Hahaha. Thank you for your recent storage videos!!
Thanks for reviewing these. I bought the 50 color set and really liked them. I think now that I've seen the 80 color set I'll try those as well. I think they would be good for botanicals. Great review as always.
I thought I was ordering the Brutfunner macro set from Amazon but it was this 80 set. I obtained the correct 50 set from Etsy. Thanks for describing their qualities. I like the macrons better. The square Brutfuner still my favorite. Appreciate your videos a great deal!🤗
The biggest issue with the 80 set is that there just aren't enough pastel shades. There's only really one tray of 20 pastel shades. Otherwise, for a ridiculously cheap price, they are OK and lay down a decent colour.
I totally agree with you I always told people some art supplies are expensive but you don't need expensive brand to create art you use what you have and buy what you can afford. When I was studying art in college we were very thrifty my art teacher had us bring in those trays ( that sometimes carry veggies or fruits) to put our paints on, and those plastic knives as pallet knives
So glad you did this video! I've seen lots of confusion about these two sets. I have just recently found the Macaron set up on Amazon but for a bit more than Aliexpress.
Thanks Lindsey. I totally love the Macaroon set I got and the Brutfunner squares I bought based on your recommendation. I took the macaroon set with me when I visited my parents and colored some prestamped images I had brought with me. Have a great day.
Lindsay always brings out the best in her, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, pastel pencils, whatever, she'll give you the best lesson in art,now where's my sharpener.😊😀❤️❤️👍🎨
Thanks Lindsay! I really like hearing your thoughts on these brands as the pastel colour palette delights me to the core. 😍 I've wanted to get the Macaron 50 but they simply aren't available through Amazon, Dick Blick or Jerrys Artarama, so instead I've been looking at the Indra 36 Macaron C.P. on Amazon. 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂🤣 I hope you had a great time in NYC at the convention!! ❤️😘
Thanks Lindsey. I have not purchased the macaroon set but do have the square set. I let the grandkids use those and not my Derwent lightfast, so they don’t get dropped 😳. So much fun to do art with them I think the macaroon set is in my future.
I got my Macaron set from Ali Express and didn’t know what to expect as I’d never ordered from them. They came fast and packaged in bubble wrap so the pencils were protected. I was very pleased how fast the shipping was, I was expecting weeks and weeks but they came in about 10 days or so.
I got the Macaron 50 from Aliexpress. They came in roughly 2 weeks. I was told it would take a month, so I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly, I love them and wish I’d gotten 2 sets. Between those and the squares, I’m quite content. 😁 I would like a harder lead budget set eventually, for fur/hair and texture, but it’s not necessary right now for what I do.
I bought the pastel set by Karismacolor from Amazon Japan. They’re amazing! It’s a smaller set, and doesn’t have a green, but the quality of the pencils is amazing!
I ordered both of the sets 🤣😂 I practice coloring flowers, so I couldn't resist them, especially after I saw the video with the Macaron colors. I am glad that I did get them both though. I am going to keep the Macarons with my Brutfuner square set (THANK YOU for that video as well!) I'll probably put part of the set of 80 colors in with my travel case, then I don't need to scramble for colors to take in the car.😊
Love this video watching today from Murfreesboro TN after a week off at home with the wife on our farm in Alabama. We’re off and running again hammer down chasing that $$$$
I Bought the Macarons after seeing Lindsey’s review because why not. I didn’t have any pastel color pencils just had to fill a need. I got them from Hippie Loves website and they were here within two weeks. Nice pencils. Happy with them.
Hi! Really wondering if the majority of colors contained in the 50 Macaron set are duplicated in Brutfuner 120 Square set (or at least of very close similar colors). Do you feel the opaqueness of the Macaron set is enough of a difference to ideally consider having both these 2 sets? Thanks for your thoughts, & another thoroughly explicit review!! Keep 'em coming - watercolors, pencils, paper et all!!!
I compared them to that set here: ua-cam.com/video/ONveLtMduEk/v-deo.html there is little overlap. It's justifiable if you want to add pastel tones to the range. If you don't use those colors it's not.
Interesting! I had been curious about those. I noticed them on Amazon recently as well. I actually decided to take the plunge and order the smallest available set of the Marco Square pencils in the pastel shades off AliExpress. It'll be a while before they get here. I've tried their (round) metallics before and I wasn't blown away but I'm also not a metallics person. If I'm scanning or photographing for prints I'm better off shading and blending to imply a metal sheen than cutting corners with a metallic pigment and hoping the light catches just right at capture time.
Hello! I received the 50 Macaroons one week ago, and i made the swatch chart, and today I just received the 80 oily pencils, so i m gonna do the swatches too, so I can compare them! 😉 Thanks for the video!🙏 Have a nice day!🌸🦄🌸 PS : i received the 50 metallic ones and the 26 skin tones too so that’s gonna be a full Brutfuner cession 😂
I purchased the 50 Macaroons on Ali Express from Lyoo Art for $15 and free shipping. Even though they said it would take 30 days it only took 11 days to arrive. They were completely wrapped in the strong bubble wrap tubes and were in perfect condition.
Thanks for this video: super usefull for me that have de 80 set and didn't know if it was the same that macarron set. Thank you so much! A kiss from Portugal
Would you consider a best of all the pencil brand in categories such as, texter, pigment, lasting time and sub categories of color groups (bold, neon, pastel and so on), oil to wax, chalk, water colors and ink? An all in one comprehensive comparison video.
@@thefrugalcrafter oh you did? I missed it! I am definitely going to check it out. I'm especially interested in pastels and neons in an oil based or water color pencil. However, as I expand my collection of art supplies, I really want to know what's good and maybe try to save some money not buying things that I won't use. Thanks Lindsay. Have a wonderful and blessed evening. 💖🌺
I have one from office depot or office max that takes 3 sizes (standard and a bit larger and a bit smaller) you need 9mm hole as the 8mm is too small. Or you can use a knife.
"Oily pencils" always makes me laugh! 😂 I don't have a dedicated set of pastel coloured pencils yet; the macarons look decent (though I'd still love to get the Holbeins).
@@thefrugalcrafter I'm pretty sure the 180 black barrel ones are white labelled, but I'm not 100%. I've seen too many sets that look exactly like them, so I haven't purchased any of those sets.
Honey, so do i! It's really odd. I don't know if they manufacture their own or white label them as they are all a bit different. I think they chase the trends.
Hi Lindsay, I'm a bit surprised to hear you wanting to eventually replace the macarons with open stock Holbeins, as I'm not so certain they're vegan. If I'm remembering correctly, I believe I'd read something about there being animal fat in the oil content. Though I have no idea whether that is pure speculation, or whether it was based on actual fact or knowledge, as it was people's comments that I was reading... (but can't remember where exactly since it was at some point as I was delving down a rabbit hole that'd started with Sarah Renae Clark's video in which she'd mentioned and linked 2 _very_ different, or rather: polar opposite, "reports" regarding Holbein's so-called lightfast ratings, and what had apparently been said about that directly from the horse's mouth, the manufacturer, and with both sources being reliable & trustworthy according to Sarah). But for what it's worth, I'remember having read it in a few different places during that trail down the rabbit hole, which is why it'd struck me as perhaps more than simply speculation or hearsay. So, knowing how important that is to you and many of your viewers, perhaps you might want to see if you can find out any more about that and whether there's any truth to that at all...???
My diet is vegan but my lifestyle is not. I use paper with gelatin sizing for instance. If there is animal fat in the pencil (which I doubt because it could go rancid) it would be a byproduct from the meat industry meaning that the animal was not killed for the fat. If they didnt find a use for it it would go to waste. I'd rather have all the parts get used rather than it go to waste and then have a synthetic chemical made to replace it. Holbein is very secretive about its ingredients so I doubt I could uncover anything.
This was strange. I was actually using the 80 set as I clicked on your video. They are OK, but not many actual pastel shades. But they work and they are so cheap in the UK. There are some nice bright shades. But this set can't really be used on it's own. It's a weird colour pallet.

It's good in Combination with standard colors. The macaron colors are light but you need darks too for realistic work.

Do Mararon Gel Pens Exist?
Yes, the milky line us pastel toned
Thank you Lindsay 🥰‼️
Do they sharpen well. That's important to me
Yes

I purchased mine for 36 dollars on Wish, although they did take 1 1/2 Months to get here but I love them.
