I sometimes think the Beatles are the only four people who never truly realised the power of that unit. They were fantastic as individuals, but there was just something magic about them together. As insiders, they couldn't see what we can see, which makes us the lucky ones.

There’s something really nice about this interview - an air of tranquility as they walk together on the beach. John seemed like he was finally at peace in regards to the whole breakup and could now look back fondly without regret. I can almost feel the nostalgia of those highs and the sadness of those lows. Such a shame he’s gone. He was truly one of a kind.

John had natural Liverpool wit, the people of the city have it naturally. Look at the way they wound the media around their little fingers at New York airport when they arrived. The 4 of them had it. Sometimes this is misinterpreted. Liverpool humour at the time was quite mocking. In Liverpool if you applied that to others you got it back, so all was equal. But when you did it to others not accustomed to the humour it was taken as an insult. John never knew when to stop it, Paul did.

Obviously, I'd defer to Elliot Mintz on the subject -- but my sense is that John had a much easier time letting his guard down with Elliot than with other journalists. There was genuine trust there.
And, Elliot, thanks for all you've given us for so many years. I used to listen to "The Lost Lennon Tapes" in the mid-to late 1980s every Sunday morning. I was very pleased to discover, many years later, that your good works continued, representing the likes Bob, no less. My utmost respect and admiration ...

John was my favorite. He had a deep sensitivity for the world. His music was so simple yet very complex in it's outreach. He packed a lot in his 40 years on earth and it's heartening to see new generations discovering the soul of this man..

I agree. Elliot has class. He and John had an obvious rapport, which wasn't always the case with many reporters. John didnt suffer fools gladly. Fortunately, sometimes a journalist of Elliott Mintz' ability comes along, and got to interview him, as well.

Great insight. Latter for sure because of the bond with NYC. Live Aid is a tougher one. I guess it just depends where he's at with live performing at that point. If he hadn't toured again by '85, it's very difficult to go from zero to live stadium show.

A snippet of this interview is in the movie. I'm very grateful John thought to document so much of his life. He was an inspiration to me, because of his humanity. He had flaws, we all do, and he worked to address them. His death stings to this day. RIP John, and thanks for the great interview Mr. Mintz.

No kidding. John was talented guy. But he was a real person. At times tormented by fears insecurities etc. He was a bad dad to Julian. He was a wonderfully flawed human being. He was a peace advocate. But many were at the time. John went through drug addiction, too much booze etc. Most of us did at the time. I love his music. Frankly i think George was always the most spiritual Beatle. Gone to soon like way too many of us of that time. RIP John Lennon

I used to see him too mostly without Yoko . I saw him with Yoko at a Japanese restaurant a few times. I remember John walked with a kind of bounce in his step & always answered when someone spoke to him. New York City people are jaded & see celebrities often. Every morning you can see Barbara Walters walking in Central Park, Madonna runs there a few times a week, Ive seen Paul McCartney a few times in the Hamptons shopping in the small A&P. & at the Met. Museum which I live a few blocks from. Paul is not as friendly as John was I notice he does'nt acknowledge people all the time & Ringo isn't friendly I saw him at The Rainbow room I think Liza Minelli or Dionne Warwick was the act. I never saw George.. Linda was always a New Yorker at heart & not friendly at all. If anyone spends time in NYC you will see celebrities. Bloomingdales, Macys in Herald Square, Barneys are good places to see a celebrity. At a Billy Joel concert we sat next to Pink & her new husband Corey. She requested a song because it was their favorite & he refused to sing Just The Way You Are in honor of their wedding. Im a registered nurse in a major NYC hospital & have taken care of many celebrities during childbirth. NYC is the best city in the world. People literally die trying to get here. Im lucky enough to have been born here & lived here for my 60 years on this earth. Im not unique in seeing celebrities they're all over the city. I even saw Yoko when there was an exhibition at the rock & Roll Hall of Fame annex with John & Yoko belongings. The staff did not like her at all. I also remember the phone with a direct line to Yoko & she would call & speak to fans. I have never asked anyone for an autograph.

This is about as normal as I've seen Lennon in a interview.
A re-union would certainly have been something to see. They made such great music/songs it's hard to bet against them not producing new gems. We all know McCartney (my personal favorite) went on to produce more excellent songs. So, there's proof "time" had NOT stopped that Beatles talent. They ALL went on for years being quite successful. So, a return to a Lennon/McCartney collaboration (Harrison/Ringo too!) would have given us more wonderful Fab Four music...siiiiigh, what might have been. 💔

Well, John (my personal favorite), was, apparently planning a world tour, for early 1981. Beyond that, I'd say the lads would've 'worked it out', by the mid to late 80s. Either way, the main thing is, we ought to have John Lennon around, still walking the earth. His was a tremendous loss to his family, friends and countless fans. He was one of a kind.

A couple of months ago I finally made the trip to NYC. Took my kids and stood at the entrance to the Dakota where that terrible incident happened, I wanted them to understand why John Lennon was so important to people and why his music and art touched so many lives. Afterwards, we went to the Imagine memorial in Central Park to sit quietly and be reflective of life in general. I'm glad I was able to finally visit these places after being a life long fan and thank you Elliot for sharing your interviews and experiences with John.

Elliot Mintz (whom I’ve just discovered) is quite possibly one of the greatest interviewers of all time. And I don’t say that lightly. He seems to have interviewed everyone in entertainment in their respective primes. And the thing that highlights him as tremendous is all his interviewees seem to genuine have an affinity for him. And that goes a long way in interviews and it shows in his work and in the responses to his queries.

thank you, michael for your very generous compliment. i would never ascribe such adjectives as 'greatest' to what i've done during my broadcast years. but will acknowledge that i always treated my interviewees with respect, listened carefully to their comments and attempted to provide a platform so they could express themselves freely.
i think they recognized those characteristics in my line of inquiry, so they allowed themselves to be more revealing.

Sadly John Lennon died 7 years before I was born, but like everyone else, I grew up listening to The Beatles and his solo work. I've seen many interviews and documentaries that JN appeared in and it seems like John was quite relaxed and put at ease in this short clip. It look like he wasn't playing up for the cameras, he seemed calm and reflective but also a happy, secure and settled person finally at peace with everything that was going on in his life at that particular time of his life at 33 years old. The sad thing is that John was denied the opportunity to watch his sons grow up, continue to make great music, and get to 80 as he would be this year.

What a overwhelming vista of memories John Lennon would have had.But yet he remained humble and detached himself from the mythology. It takes great maturity and courage to do that.

    • @elliotmintzvideos
      @elliotmintzvideos  3 роки тому

john was more about reality than mythology.....especially the kind of mythologies that emerged about him. his vision of himself was closer to being 'a working class hero' as opposed to 'the man who founded the beatles'. in our conversations, he would sometimes chastise me for speaking about some of my 'heroes' who have passed .... or were still alive. audiences marvel at the ability of the magician who can pull the rabbit out of the hat. but, to some degree, john was the rabbit. that experience gives you a vastly different perspective. the only time i personally witnessed john in an almost 'fan like state' was when we went to see jerry lee lewis performance. jerry was part of the mythology of john's youth and the re-visit appeared to be very meaningful to him.
