The kitty cat is there for the "licks" 😂😂
Can you do your self a little bit better
He he ..Good one..!!! 😃👍
I see what you did there🤣
I had to paws before responding.
Can't understand how this guy only has 36k subs..he's bloody awesome. I love his intro licks ..any chance Max of doing a few tabs for us newbie guitarists ??
Hey Airblazer! I'm actually working on an instructional video right now, full length with tabs! It's basically essential shred licks and concepts! Thanks tons!
that's fantastic to hear...please please please include the one from the fake fender? I absolutely love that and listen to it every day ua-cam.com/video/TPACrNIOopk/v-deo.html
@@GuitarMAXMusic will the cat appear in the vid and what guitars will you use? Will you upload it here?
Some of the other genius players have low numbers (so far) - Wings of Pegasus, James James, Arnold Plays Guitar, even Mike Pachelli.
Some of the guys with huge subs numbers really do a lot less for me than these great players.
Kevin Hoover yep a case of quantity over quality.
I would love to see you demo more Harley Benton guitars
Thanks for making this video for us. Very helpful resource for those considering the Harley Benton fanned fretters.
Since Max shows amazing tone in great and cheap guitars I stopped to buy expensive brands; Thanks Max
Nice Carlos!
What are these brands except HB?
U can't compare an HB and strandberg Guitar... prefere buy 1 awsome guitar than have 5 piece of shiit at home
@@iangirod9169 yeah ur right...cant have 5 piece of shit strandbergs instead of harley bentons...lol
@@MathiasBronnes Strandberg guitars beat any shitty market guitar you could find by that price
Seriously....always looking forward to your uploads, love your style of playing. AWESOME... thanks for the info Max.
Thanks Chris!
Seriously! Max makes playing look so easy! Then I get on a guitar, and it sounds like I'm killing it... :( I need more practice.
Hi Max, thank you for the review. Excellent playing and by the way you shirt made my day!:)
Hey Brad, I've ordered this via Thomann. Thanks so much for covering this guitar with such a pro demonstration :D oh and I loved your full improv intro
Thanks for the explanation of the purpose of fanned frets. I’ve always wondered. Now that you explain it, it makes sense looking at the relationship of the strings between the nut and the bridge. Wound strings, longer string length for more tension. Unwound strings, shorter string length for less tension.
Always great reviews !
Much appreciated! I was looking at this very guitar on Thomann last night, but having no experience of fanned or 7-string machines, had no idea how to judge. It just went to the top of my treat-yourself list :)
Always a pleasure Max - your videos are very well presented. Adorable cat - lovely wee pal to have rockin' out with you. Thanks also for teaching me the value of the fan fret in relation to intonation, I had wondered what that was all about! One of the best guitar channels on youtube. Cheers!
Thanks Allan!
I subscribed because James Franco playing Tommy Wiseau playing Harley Benton.
Great review, man. This is an unbelievable price for what looks like a good entry level multiscale 7 string for under $175 with shipping. Exactly what I prefer to spend for something that might end up collecting dust in the corner. With the rest of the things I buy without thinking through... :/
I'd buy it if ya signed it, you are a working class man's hero! thanks for all the stuff you point us to!
Thanks Max! My wife ordered the 8 string version for my birthday and I can't wait to get it!
How to you like it?:)
@@Dapno_ It's a good mod platform, Mine needs a new nut. The tuners are shit, and I find the pickups a bit muddy sounding. The frets and neck were fine.
Love the cat who is just chilling on the couch in the background, taking it's daily cleaning licking.
Well done!
Thanks for the review!
Great playing brother , and I love that guitar and it’s on my list !
This video was for me the reason why I bought this Harley Benton. And indeed it's a great guitar. Only other pickups and a little polishing the frets. Thanks for this video!! Helped me a lot!! Joost, Holland.
Do you still have it? I would like to know your opinion about the guitar 4 years later.
Excellent video, Max! Really liked your explanation at the end about the differences between this and a conventional guitar. I do think fanned fret guitars are taking off big time. They are the future, I don't own one but I've tried them and liked it.
Thanks for the demo. I could see getting this guitar as a start and put some better pickups in.
Another great review looks and sounds great
Max I really think you should try to collaborate with some other guitar youtubers you’re amazing and your channel and videos and very high quality and honest. You deserve more recognition.
Great as always max !! yes unfortunately for us here in canada we have to pay $75 can shipping + we get nailed for import tax's up to 15%. I ordered a TE-52 tele + HBD 120 E cutaway acoustic & after all was done I had to play $390 can for it. You's in the usa definately have the big advantage in ordering from thoman with the better $ & not taxed on orders from thomann.
Very interesting review, thanks man
That's some serious shredding. Thanks for your review of this I got a 8 but thinking a fan fret may be fun to experiment with.
Your playing is really Good. Thanks to you i bought this beast
The biggest issue I always had with my 27" scale 7 string is that while low string tension is absolutely perfect (noticeably better than on a 25"ish), bends become pretty much impossible unless you use the lightest of string gauges, and I really mean lightest, which has its own problems.
I see on their specs list that the scale is 27 to 25,5, so that may just be what those of us who prefer that longer scale but still have a burning desire for bending strings need. I think I'll order one and see, it's so cheap anyway. Thanks for the great review and presentation as always. Best channel around for this sort of stuff :)
Try being a bassist lol
Fantastic keep up the good work!
I got one of these earlier this year and I absolutely love it, I'm looking at getting an 8 string fan fret from Harley Benton some time soon
I've been looking at the 8-string variant, since I want to get into guitar playing ( a bit silly to want an 8 when your starting i know lol), and even though this is for the 7-string, this is the best review I've seen when it comes to this guitar.
Great playing and demos for clean, rythm, and solo
Very insightful commentary
Awesome Han Solo shirt
Cat
great video and subscribed!
I am a bassist and actually bought this 7 string version, beacause 8 is too much for me. I tune it 3 different ways, B (H) standard, Drop A and (with changed lowest string) Double E - Low E, E, A, D, G, B, e.
Had a 8 string non fanfret and the top string is a bit muddy sounding compared to the rest so I am gonna trade my non fanfret 8 string for a fanfret 7 one.
I agree, I purchased one and I really like it. Like you said the fretboard is very nice and it does have a slightly deeper tone. Mine holds tune extremely well. It arrived set up and I do play it daily. Would I recommend it? Heck yea.
Everything in your hands plays great, Max 😉
I finally ordered one of these on Thursday, should be here (Pennsylvania) by the end of the week. Im so excited!
Hey I want to buy this guitar as a start to get into 7 strings but I hear mixed reviews about it so I want to ask if you like it or rather regret buying it
@@nobuna2114 Hey there! It actually just arrived yesterday. It took awhile to get here, but it did travel from Germany, to Chicago, than over here to PA.
I actually bought it to introduce myself to 7 string also and i think it was a good move. Honestly i dont have any real complaints, the action is super high so it needs a setup but that was expected. The pickups arent the greatest, but that's also expected. You get what you pay for. Im not a professional musician so i dont need professional gear, if i wanted the best i wouldve spent more money to get the best 🤷♂️
That being said, it really does feel like it should be MORE than $130, its actually a pretty nice instrument. It looks gorgeous and it plays decently enough. I don't regret the purchase at all.
As long as you accept that you get what you pay for, i dont think youd regret it either ✌️
@@wardkdouglas Cool thx for the quick response. Doing a setup is no problem for me and I will probably get other pickups too if I like the guitar. Just wanted to know if it is just garbage basically or actually usable after some changes and the latter seems to be the case
Have a nice day and stay healthy
Great review as usual Max. Will you do one for the HB R-446?
Excellent video as always ,Guitar Max. This guitar dounds great clean snd dirty. I have never played a 7 string guitar before but at the price Harley Benton are asking its worth thinking about to buy. Also I was wondering what is the model of Ibanez you have on the wall(the mahogany one). Thanks again for the awesome video.
Screw it, I'll just ask this straight forward... I NEED LINKS FOR YOUR ORIGINAL STUFF THAT YOU DID WITH YOUR BAND OR SOLO PROJECTS!
You are too good on the melodies, Max! It's a blessing for our ears that we get to hear such melodic playing while checking out the products that we are interested in. You changed the game of reviewing gear big time. Gone are the days where a dude would just show a guitar and then play the intro riff of Master Of Puppets and then add a few random chuggings.
But, yeah, there's one problem, your cat still steals the spotlight from you xD. So adorable.!
Ive bought this exact guitar due to watching this video, hopefully a good start to 7 string playing
@National Trolliosis Foundation I am not really a fan of the guitar if I'm honest. The pickups are horrible. The nut is really high and sharp, for the money though, you cannot complain.
These guitars are hot garbage, you get what you pay for. Even with an expensive set of pups and locking tuners this guitar would be terrible. Multiscale guitars require a lot of close attention in the factory.
If you want to dabble in 7 string guitar, buy a jackson dinky.
MindlessMatt The nut is an easy/cheap fix, and you’d usually want to replace pickups on guitars in this price range anyway.
Very cool!! For the price it's certainly a viable option for picking up a 7 string with fan frets....thanks for the review...
Thanks, this video is good! Guitar looks greit and sounds good.
Now i wait my HB R-457 fanfret guitar.. 💪😎
Thanks for posting this
Whoa! So awesome !
I love how your cat is just doing some licks in the back aswell xD
Yeah!
Welcome to the New Era where you don't have to spend a lot of money for an amazing guitar... and this is happening on every kind! Are you still willing to pay $5000 for a custom shop? Crazy man...
Great video man!!
Yea but if you look at a number of Harley Benton reviews on UA-cam, you will realize not everybody gets one with as few complaints. A lot of times the frets do have sharp edges, and it comes from the factory a bit more unfinished in these respects in some instances. White Gloss is easy to pull off, but on some of the quilt veneer models, people are mentioning inconsistencies in the finish overall. I just want people to realize ,9 times out of 10, you will get what you pay for. A serious player will want to swap the pickups and you may need to do your own finish work out of the box. Yours might not happen to stay in tune as well. It's just all these things that add up to matter on a combined instrument, that you cannot totally sub a $5k guitar for this one. You don't necessarily need to spend $5k to achieve great quality either, but certainly consider maybe $500-$1k or else you run the risk of cheapness anywhere on the build, finish, or hardware.
What effects did you use for the first demo and what amp? Really sick playing all along, much love! Also a pretty decent review since I am about to get one of these Harley Benton 7 Strings.
Always good thanks
Cat liked Max's riffage so much, it even wanted to do its own licks too! xD
Oh your back
Great review Max.. indeed fanned frets are in first instance for compensate the string tension. and that is something that exists for a long time. But lately they came back, for the "shredding" guitarist. I think it would take some time to get used to it. Especialy an 8 string i guess. To what note is the eight string tuned anyway ? And what's the actual advantage on that ? Even play higher notes, without going up on the neck ? I'm more a Blues/ Hardrock rhythm player and solo mostly in pentatonics. I think in the beginning i would put my fingers ON the frets i think. And than you have also to mute mostly the highest string. It's cool, but nothing for me.. for now. Maybee a treble bleed on the tone pot could help a bit out, or look for some Dragonfire pickups to upgrade ? Greets.
I love how the cat is oblivious to what's going on!👍😎🎸🎶
Will finish video later but how is the feel of it? I am curious about fanned frets and have not had the chance to try one. How does low tuning tone and playability? Thanks man and keep shredding.
I need help changing the pickups in this guitar. What kind of pickups I have to buy? Standard 7 strings pickups works? Or I have to buy something specific, because of the fanfret?
I've really been wanting to try the fan fret thing. This price probably going to buy it.
That purple wood is beautiful as ever
Like the way the cat syncs up it's licking to the rhythm!
Ooh his hair and voice so smooth
That is awesome very talented like your style
Hey, Max ! I wanted to ask you, between this HB and the Jackson JS22-7 which one would you recommend. I really want to get into 7 and 8 strings and I can't really make up my mind with which guitar should I start.
Which one did you buy?
Damnit Max! I’m running out of space for all these guitars you’ve influenced me to buy! Can you make a video that explains to my wife how every guitar sounds different and no guitar player is content only owning 10 guitars
May be able to trade thw ife for a few guitars, depending on what kind of shape she's still in. More guitars and no more questions!
Yeah call mine too. She says I can only play one at a time. What the hell does that mean? Excellent playing and tone!!
This sold me on the R458 Progressive series.. just ordered it... happy birthday to me it'll come before my birthday which is on Xmas.
How is it
@@joshlyons5652 Get one just get it set up and change the pickups, it's a work horse.
@@meltyboys946 What pickups would you recommend?
@@h0nza_ I would recommend Fishmans because my buddy has the R458 as well and his has fishman fluence pickups, excellent. I have D-Activators which aren't as nice as the Fishman pickups but they are good for this guitar at the moment.
I intend to get the fanned fret R458 and retire my current to my backup guitar and run Fishman's in it. Can't beat the price of these guitars and they're a great platform for modding.
Hey nice review Thanks. Can you pls run it through - clean sound per switch position i.e. without the fx. Thanks
Hey Max!! ........ is that your listing for yours in the link?
Great review and playing as usual Max. Awesome !!!!
Yep! Thanks!
Guitar MAX
....... awesome !!
Good vídeo dude, new subscriber 😉
Thanks man!
Not bad for the price thank you sir 🤘
Thanks for the awesome reviews you do on this channel, Max. I am curious about what Dragonfire or GFS pickup would be your "go-to" for prog. What would you choose for an active set & a passive set?
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to try out the active pickups from Dragonfire or GFS. As far as the passive pickups though, I did really like the clarity and punch of the Hexbuckers from Dragonfire. That would be my go to for Prog, but again there could be a good active choice that I'm not aware of.
@@GuitarMAXMusic Looks like I found my pickup for my DIY headless build. Any experience with a headless guitar? And thanks fort the response!
Hey @GuitarMAXMusic, i found your channel by pure luck when I was looking at picking up the Ibanez RGA42EX-BAM. I'm currently looking at picking up my first guitar at around the £400 price point and looking for something which I would be able to play bands like Slipknot, Architects, Beartooth and Bury tomorrow. Would you suggest this as a good starting guitar, or would you suggest something slightly different for this sort of music? Appreciate the help!
Metalkitty is back
Was looking for an inexpensive great guitar 7-8 string ( was unhappy with the Ernieball JP7. Is this still the best guitar on the price ? searched your channel but this is the closest on multiple video ( i dont mind a diy kit if thats the route, actually enjoy the process)
I can’t do anything you do, I can barely do anything with a 6 string but I want this guitar now.
You should try out the Dragonfire Actives on this guitar! They make a 7 string set.
Was thinking the same..
Would the dragonflies active fit in the angled cavities?
I have dragonfires on strats that I like.
@@callmecraig3046 those pickups are luckily not custom slanted they are simply tilted standard pickups, so theoretically any pickups with same dimensions will fit.
@@jensenparker5504 I've since gotten rid of that guitar, hopefully your comment is useful to someone else though.
Would you say it’s better than the Jackson JS22-7? And what’s the scale length? I might buy one if it has a longer scaled neck. I’ve grown accustomed to my 26.5 neck and now everything else I play feels to small.
I wish there was an amazing youtuber like you who could demo the uk side of cheap brands. Like i wanna buy this guitar from dawson music called a redwood r3 but theres no independent youtubers to review them. Like there are brands like subzero, redwood, stretton payne, that really need reviewing
I traded my Harley Benton r458 regular for a r457 White fanfret model with Maple neck today and have to say that Harley Benton fixed the pickups on the Maple neck model. It finally has some mids now even tho its not a super high gain sound but that's easy to tweak 😈
Hey sorry to bother you man, thinking of picking that exact guitar up as my first 7! What do you make of it now with the different pickups & maple neck?
@@michaelwalshe1799 pickups are more clear than the non fan fret 8 string so the pickups are an upgrade, the neck looks beautiful on the fretboard (shiny look). The pickups are not very high gain but very clear so you might up the gain a bit more with the guitar but that's pretty much it. Great value fan fret 7 string guitar.
@@shagstars Thanks for the insight mate!
@@michaelwalshe1799 you welcome, its a nice guitar for the money. Even with inflation its cheap.
Doesn’t the fanned fret layout impact the intonation in a positive way? For example, piano bass strings are long and the treble strings are short. Also, the only time I played a fan fret guitar, it seemed to me that the left hand ergonomics were superior to the regular setup, i.e. the fan fret felt more natural and comfortable.
I just purchased this guitar from HB and am waiting for it to arrive from Germany. The multi scale wide neck was the most important reason for choosing this model and the affordability closed the deal.
Your videos are excellent. Thank you for your precise, concise evaluations. Oh, and by the way, your playing is incredible.
This guy always has a cool t-shirt
Metal cat in the background was totally unphased. Haha. That's great...
nice!
lord Farquad gear reviews lml
8:45 its also used to make the upper string less loose so it doesnt bop the frets while playing. Which the 8 string version fanfret or not suffers from. & string seems the better way
I own this and the eight-string standard fret there not bad guitars for the money and it now has a maple fretboard which i think looks better, the one issue i did have was the frets made a weird grating sound when bending had to give the frets a good polish and i did change the pickups in the 7 string to EMG 707 as i had seen reviews that said they were a bit weak i already had the EMG's before the guitar arrived but the stock pups were not that bad for the price however the 8 strings pups were pants and i swapped them out for some second hand EMG 57-8H and 66-8H both guitars now kick ass well above there price range even with the cost of the EMG's factored in
Really like that guitar
Any budget pickup suggestion for this model ?
Cat really vibing in the background 😂
can someone tell me the exact pickup dimension? i think i’ll buy this, but i have to change them with some emgs
Nice review, and it does sound good especially for the price... but I'm sorry but i was staring at the cat the entire time haha
Hey Max! What amphead/cap do you normally use? I'm currently looking to upgrade from my lowend amp to something better and I'm trying to find out what brands and models sound like what.
I typically use a Blackstar ID Core combo amp for my videos! I can't recommend them enough. If you need something to shake the walls down, go for the ID 100 TVP head. You can't find them for around 200-300 on the used market and they are superb.
Why do you have a polysander overlay? Where can I buy this version of the guitar?
Gear doesn't matter :) Nice playing, Max!
you really should do a review of the 8 string version!
Harley Benton has a single cut (Les Paul style) SC Progressive 1000 Active guitar in a vintage black finish that you should check out.
Great looking guitar. They only make 'em with the maple fretboard now, which I think clashes with the white finish too much. This one looks a lot better.
you have to have the cleanest cat around. everytime I see him he is cleaning himself 🤣🤣
If you still have that thing around Christmas ill surely buy it off you, if its not still listed by then looks like im ordering one from germany
5:36 really hear that pop as you switched the three positions toggle. What say you as to the electronics of this guitar?
Pickups are a bit muddy, but for the price, it'd be nothing to upgrade them later on. Everything else seems pretty solid.
I bought the HB SC-7 fan fret and it is taking some time to get used to! When I play an E chord it looks like I'm playing an A minor. Kind of disorienting at first. Ergonomically a bit more difficult to play first fret barre chords too because of the extreme first fret angle. Anyone have any difficulty playing a fan fret too? Love the channel Max!
Great video as always. ..and my H B'S.
I have the same guitar only the 8 string model, R-458. I replaced the pickups with a Lace Aluma x-bar on the neck, and a Deathbar on the bridge. Which still put it just over $400 ish. And to honest the thing plays and sounds like a 1K guitar. And at the price that Thomann sells them for, I may buy a few other HB's, and do some different configs.
How long does it take for shipping tho?
Kitty is cleaning to the beat. Cool guitar.
That cat in the background 😂❤
Hi Max, have you heard about the Eagletone guitars? They seem to be another in-store brand from the Woodbrass.com shop. I thought you would be interested. Cheers and keep up the great work !
I'm interested in the Eagletone SG style guitar.
