I'll say the graphics have updated but I wish they kept the color grading. It's like if the Twilight movie was color graded differently, the blue tinge is just a part of the story!
The remake is even bluer. I think people are just confused by the earlier clips with the sun setting, but the game looks way darker and bluer in the remake, in comparison the original looks greyish.
I've found that choosing every option to be nice to Josh (not stabbing him with scissors as Ashley, not hitting him with the plank as Chris, telling him that you're there for him as Sam) also contributes to him feeling remorseful later on. As well as making sure his biggest fear is isolation.
About Chris’ character, Will Byles (The writer and director) confirmed in a Podcast that Chris did not know about the prank at all and was just written out of it entirely so Josh wasn’t “drunk on his own.” So I’m definitely leaning towards him not wanting to make Ashley feel bad too.
I appreciate that kind of “Word of God” confirmation from showrunners and writers. It silences a lot of unnecessary debates. I understood the thought process some people had with it (that Chris’ role in the prank was to get Josh drunk so he’d be out of the way), but the psychology never sat right with me. Chris is Josh’s best friend, Josh is incredibly close to his sisters, and so presumably, Chris is close with Hannah too; would he really take part in something that’d hurt those he cared about when he had nothing to gain? You can imagine that Matt and Ashley got misled or pressured into participating by the popular members of the group and Sam seems to have a problem standing up to her friends (her actions with the prank, the gun, and even her long bath display a tendency to avoid social conflicts), but Chris’ rationale just doesn’t add up for being in on the prank. Even if Emily or Jess tried to convince him to get Josh blackout drunk, Chris is the inquisitive type and would’ve asked why. If anything, it seems like Josh pressured his buddy into going head to head with him in a drinking contest; Josh’s high tolerance from his alcohol abuse means Chris would’ve passed out first just like the remake implies.
It’s also possible that Chris’s line implying he knew about the prank was something from an early draft that never got revised when it was decided Chris wasn’t going to know about the prank. I never saw it as he intentionally got Josh drunk.
I do wish they kept the static camera. I always love how it made you feel small when compared to the environment, as well as the feeling that you're being stalked
Small thing about Josh's mental health crisis being mentioned in Hannah's diary, that's also in the original game and has been for years. Most people just don't see it because they don't swipe right.
We do not need a sequel. I think the story is as expanded as it needs to be, and I don't think there's more that needs to be learned. I think Until Dawn managed to tell its story with great pacing and satisfaction. The only thing I'd want more of is justice for Josh. He truly is a tragic character, and even since the original, I wish he got so much more than death or stuck in the mines and turning into a wendigo.
The remake added a third option where he's found before he has to eat the Stranger's body (or he simply chooses not to) and there's the original VR sequel all about him and (spoiler) being possessed by the Wendigo! It's sadly fitting that he bears the brunt of it, the tropes he fits into are never kind to the mentally ill character
my biggest thing is it looks like every scene takes place in a big open void, especially scenes taking place in the lodge. i get it is dark, but it really takes me out of the illusion. Really enjoy watching your streams playing it though!
My hot take is that not everything needs a sequel. I love this game and it's characters for this story, to attempt to extend past this game could cause potential character assassinations for the sake of fan service. I would rather just continue to love this game and keep coming back to it then get something new that could potentially ruin an already amazing story with amazing characters
it sounds to me like they couldn’t get a full orchestra for the soundtrack this time around. which is a shame because the sound of strings makes the game feel like the horror movies of old they were paying homage to. 🎶
Oh sure, the remake has better animations, models and things. I think for older fans like me, we see the difference a lot and it changes the vibe of the game
My interpretation of the inclusive dialogue Chris uses with Ashley is that he still feels guilt for what happened, and he may have internalized it in a negative way. Main evidence ofo this for me is his attitude towards saving Sam; he sees abstaining from helping her at all as "killing her ourselves", which makes me think that even if he didnt know about the prank, he felt responsible in some way for the twins disappearing because he wasn't awake to stop things from escalating. Which, I definitely agree that it should have been elaborated on or phrased better, cuz while I feel that's a valid reading, its also extrapolating from confusingly worded dialogue.
The music of the original was part of the identity of Until Dawn, each pieces of music was made specifically for a scene, sequence, and even characters (Sam has her own theme that plays in chapter 10 on her way back to the lodge). Depending on what choices you'd take during a chase the music would react, adapt, evolve to something more dynamic or more intense. Remake sounds like music placed here and there to fill the void, with no style, intensity, it's flat. 39:50 I think the remake wanted to emphasize her pacifist personality, you know not taking any side, being impartial, or even not getting involved in any drama. By doing so it shows how destructive it can be to do nothing in some cases. For instances when you play as Sam during the lodge finale if you choose to do nothing in all of the decisions making the result are the death of someone else or hers (first one is prevented by Mike who comes back to save her). That's one thing i can't take away from the remake, they really tried to add something to each characters' personality with new scenes or interactions (well apart from Matt and Jess who got nothing lol), and that's cool because the prologue manages to show how Sam knew about the prank and chose to do nothing until it was too late.
I figured out how to consistently get the remorse option. It’s simple, and I got it the first time I played the remake. Something I noticed from the original is that if you pick specific options with dr Hill, he and Josh will start heading towards Josh’s true fears; isolation. So basically, answer everything as if Josh were answering the questions. The root issue of his trauma is that he fears isolation. So talk about it with dr hill. The farmhouse is nice looking but it would feel lonely there. If you pick that option for example, dr hill delves deeper on Josh’s isolation fears. Just stick to that and you’ll get the remorse option for sure 👍
They removed the O death song at the start?! Firstly that song is beautiful, eerie but at the same time beautiful. Secondly, the song has connotations linking to the identity of the game, specifically Hannah and her descent into becoming a wendigo. That’s a disappointment to hear
To get the ending, you have to 1) make sure everyone survives 2) Josh has to know Hannah is the wendigo 3) choose they hurt me first, then the sorry option should open up This is the method I saw someone use in a different video, and it seemed to work
This remake is certainly a mixed feeling for those who played the OG. The graphics are an improvement and the glad they kept the OG voice acting, 3rd person camera is nice but I do like the OG fixed cam. I liked the new prologue showing the prank setup more so you can know who's who better, it does feel outta blue and slight confusing in the OG. As you said the music is a BIG factor that's extremely missed in this remake, especially the chases and wendigo reveal AND THE FINALE! The only time I think the new music added something was during tension building moments with the Saw and Emily bite argument. I look forward to the mods that add the og music back in. For the sequel im not 100% sure what they could do, maybe sam is cursed and goes to find a way to break it, i also don't expect her to reunite with the other survivors, unless they're cursed too. She probably just mention them and what happened to them, could even have it depend on who lived or died in the first game. Another idea is Sam is more of a surprise cameo character that will help the new characters in the sequel. Despite my gripes im really happy this game is back on the radar for new players.
I've had a special spot in my heart for the original and constantly rewatched playthroughs, seeing the new prologue cutscene was....underwhelming The dialogue between characters is awkward, it's like watching a Disney channel show without the laugh track. Unnecessary pauses in a conversation that should flow smoothly, and when there are gaps, there is no new dialogue to fill them. We just wait until they load the next segment of dialogue and go from there. And when it comes to Hannah and Beth's scenes, they didn't even try. Writers just said "yup let's add in some grunts and huffs exchanged between the two in place for dialogue that should be there because we couldn't be bothered to ask them to record new lines, or write new ones" (idk which actors specifically returned to record lines just eyeballing here). Even when the whole charade was exposed that "it was just a prank, Han" (glad this is still here but with raytracing), Hannah just silently storms out without saying anything, making her seem selectively mute, rather than a girl with feelings that are very hurt and KNOWN in the original. The remake has hits and misses, the og is only hits imo.
I think the reception suffered with how close its release was to the SH2 remake. There were only 2 days between this release and when all the preorders for the later hit and everyone began streaming it
They couldn’t use the song again since it’s copyrighted and most likely expensive. A remake of this size just wouldn’t have the means for that song again (considering all the changes they wanted to implement.)
About the whole tangent on chris and his inclusive language. I was waiting for you to also give the possibility that he was simply feeling remorseful himself for not being aware and capable of stopping it, but you didn't. I sure think this is most likely the case. More so than just liking ashley. He blamed himself for what happened and considers himself just as involved.
That prank feels planned from even before Chris got blackout drunk, so I think he was aware of it and speak up to stop it. I think that’s why he feels guilty and includes himself in the prank.
i wish they kept the ambiguity of whether Ashley let Chris die out of pettiness. Ashley had such an annoying air about her where it seemed like she was just as vain and arrogant as Jessica and Emily but had this hypocritical sense of superiority and “justification” for her actions that I think made her the most complex character in terms of personality in the original. And even though I hated her guts and wanted her to die every single gameplay I watched EACH time I watched I always analyzed her behavior and wondered “Is she actually being honest right now? What kind of person is Ashley really? Does anyone in the group hold her accountable or do more obvious bitches like Emily let her fly under the radar? Does anyone else in the group see through her?” and in the original that scene is like you’re actually getting a look at who Ashley really is when no one can challenge her or is able to expose her true nature to other people and the depths she’s willing to go to punish others for not falling for her manipulations. That’s SUCH a huge marker for good character writing for me and it’s such a shame they took that out cause Ashley was a way more interesting character when it looked like her annoying ass personality was just a front and an exaggerated way of trying to get people to do what she wanted. tl;dr Ashley is SO ANNOYING and I fucking hated her but she was WAY more interesting when it looked like she was secretly a vindictive and petty person underneath all that.
I think the reason why people’s views on Ashley are so polarized is because, among all the protagonists, her personality can be shaped and molded the most by the player’s choices. She has the most opportunities to express remorse over the prank against Hannah, and whether she does or not is up to the player. Whether she’s brave or reluctant, loving or vengeful, it all comes down to the player, their actions, and how they react to her. She’s not lacking in personality, but it’s like she’s a bit of a blank slate that people can readily project their feelings upon. You hate her guts and find her fake and annoying, and I want to underscore that’s a perfectly valid read. Personally, I *tend* to like Ashley. I observe her timidity and lack of confidence and feel an instinctual urge to protect her. Dr. Hill mentions her greatest fear is the dark, and while I get it if you find her screaming and freak outs aggravating, I feel like her reactions to the terrifying and traumatic occurrences on the mountain are among the most believable (all of us like to think we’d react to danger like Mike, Sam, or Emily do, but come on, be honest with yourself, we’d probably be like Ashley to some degree). Finally, call me a sucker for a love story, but I like her and Chris as a couple and enjoy their growing connection throughout the evening. So while I view her one way, you see her another, and probably many more people fall somewhere in between, I think all of these interpretations have some merit and it’s actually really cool there can be such a variety. In the end though, we’re beholden to the game designers’ vision. It seems that with that porch scene, they wanted to clarify how the original interaction was meant to be taken.
@@bugdomrulezSame. That's why I dislike Jessica, she appeared honest but was the kind of snake that would even betray her closest friend (for a man no less!). Emily has her reasons but she's open with her anger and meanness. Jess is the opposite and when she strikes back she'll act like the victim. Ashley is wishy-washy, a bit too happy to indulge in bitchiness and clearly holds herself as a nice person. Sam has pushover tendencies but she has the emotional intelligence and strength to eventually stand up for herself and others. She might not initiate conflict directly but she'll find a way to fix the situation and can step in if it's too dire (ie: the prank, the gun scene). Emily and Sam are honest. Jess and Ash aren't. Ash might not do something as bad as Jess but she'll certainly stab you in another way and is easily swayed (explaining why the player can influence her personality the most). HOWEVER her decision not to open the door for Chris is something completely different. The trauma is taking its toll, her mind is breaking down (between the Wendigos and Josh targeting her and Chris, she's gone through a lot) and she's so confused and lost if she does kill Chris (one of the only deaths we have no direct influence over!) tells me that she didn't mean it, she didn't think he would die. My interpretation is that for a split second she wanted to see him squirm like he made her but she snapped back to her right mind and it was too late. She didn't think the Wendigo would be so fast, she wasn't herself. She sounds so small and horrified trying to explain it. Something a lot more telling and more in-line with her personality though is her yelling at Mike to shoot Emily. Yes she's scared but she has zero hesitation to kill Emily (well, get Mike to do it, she wouldn't have done it herself) without proof of her being dangerous or trying to get her to leave. Mike's reaction is a great indicator that personality played a hand here: he needed to keep everyone safe and Ashley's panic stressed him out. He gave her the option to leave, he doesn't like it but he explains why and tries to keep his cool whereas Ashley is working herself up into a frenzy. He draws the gun, probably intending to scare her, and Ashley is demanding he kills her. He's clearly distressed because of her and she's actively worsening the situation, eventually convincing him to either shoot or keep her. If you do shoot her, Ashley doesn't show that much remorse when you learn that she wasn't a threat. If you don't shoot her, Ashley isn't apologetic even when learning she almost got Emily killed for nothing. IMHO even her apologies and remorse about Beth and Hannah's deaths feel a bit forced, like she truly doesn't think she's guilty or the worst one of the bunch (true but that's not a normal reaction to accidentally driving your friends to die). I always got the feeling that she's mostly saying these things to look good (for Chris then for the "ghost"). I really dig how everyone is a douche in a different way tbh!
@@Unownshipper this is my interpretation. To be honest, everyone in that friend group has some issues. The person it's hardest to point at doing something bad is Chris, with Sam close behind. I don't think Ashley is fake and vindictive. She's just afraid, and panicking. And as a young adult maybe sometimes she doesnt want to fully be accountable. Like to be fair, not trying to specifically defend Ashley but she is right. The prank, even though it was cruel and wrong, didn't force Hannah out the house. I feel like any normal person would've run to their room. It was her decision to run outside, deep into the forest during a snow storm. No one forced her to do that. They are at fault, but not all the blame falls on them IMO. Hannah was just, no offense, kinda dumb. They take a lot of the blame but not all of it. Chris and Ashley are my favorite. I can understand why people think Ashley is annoying, but we have the same opinion that everyone thinks they'd be a Sam or Mike but most of us would be more like Ashley. The amount of stuff she's went through is ridiculous.
Sam being hesitant to stop Mike from shooting Emily could work if that was apart of her character in the sequel. Like she’s an extrovert introvert maybe. She’s adventurous but doesn’t want to upset her friends or stand up to them which explains why she doesn’t stop the prank. Problem is I don’t think the writers thought of that and seems like a mistake on her character
I think that was always supposed to be a part of her even if it’s not addressed overtly. It seems evident to me even during the prank itself. Consider what is actually seen in the original game: while everyone runs off to the guest room to participate in the prank, Sam's actions are deliberately made ambiguous: she heads upstairs, has a pained look on her face, and calls out Hannah's name. This is either a failed attempt to warn Hannah of the prank, or Sam caving to peer pressure and playing her role by directing Hannah towards the guest room/letting her know Mike is waiting for her. Everyone assumes it’s the former, but why? Is it because she’s the “final girl” type and their trope is being morally upright? Is it because she’s played by the wonderful Hayden Panettiere? It’s never expressly made clear, so why do most people not even consider the option that Sam couldn’t stand up to the majority of her friends until it was already too late? It’s repeatedly hinted at throughout: she takes a bath rather than deal with the drama her friends are getting up to, she doesn’t intervene harder during the bite incident, etc. Honestly I think engaging in the prank adds a layer of needed complexity to Sam. She wants to be there for her friends but can’t stand up to the provocateurs; she wants to comfort Josh whom she’s close with, but feels guilt for not stopping the prank that killed Hannah. It all makes her transition into the hero character more compelling and more of a growth arc. It’s certainly more interesting than believing she’s practically perfect from the start and simply just ineffectual.
if they are really working on a sequel i really think strongly that josh will be in it. for one, because he is the fan favorite character but also because of the addition of the josh ending where he survives. plus, the character sam was the closest with was josh. so if the sequel is about sam, i can also see how they bring josh back for her story.
I feel the EXACT same way about the music/soundtrack. I was taking notes while I was watching gameplay (just for fun) and the soundtrack came up multiple times 💔💔🎶🎶
The change to the musical score was BY FAR my biggest disappointment but the OTS camera was a close second. The remake loses that cinematic feel that the original had, and I just DO NOT understand what the thought process was. Did they somehow lose the rights to their original soundtrack?? They still had the audio lines from the actors. Did they somehow think this quiet, mid-effort music was actually an improvement over Jason Graves’ tense orchestral strings and punctuating brass of the first game?! And as for the camera, it just feels like another lazy trend-chase: “Resident Evil remake had over the shoulder camera, so we’d better do it too! That’ll show how innovative we are!” So dumb. You summed it up well with the lack of worth. I think to make a game like Until Dawn work, you have to lean in heavily and unapologetically into the baroque nature of the Horror genre, the cheesiness of teen dramas, the over the topness of slasher movies and survival horror video games. You need the right team who believes wholeheartedly in the project like director Will Byles, like writer Larry Fessenden. I don’t want to say Ballistic Moon was unenthusiastic about handling this (although one gets the feeling they were just given this assignment: “this game made more money than anyone expected back in 2015, give it a new coat of paint for modern consoles.”), but it’s a big ask to be given someone else’s game and to imagine they’ll have the same passion or creative decisions. I’m not saying they had no appetite for the work, but it would explain why they were more reserved with the music. Also this was the company’s first game and I believe they were trying to find ways to distinguish themselves and show how they weren’t just cloning the 2015 game so they eschewed the fixed camera to seem more relevant. It’s just a pity they didn’t have the vision of the original crew. Maybe some of the detriments can be chalked up to limited resources. It seems the company laid off 10% of their staff months before the game shipped. That’d explain the glitchiness and cut corners. 🙄 I’m happy there’s renewed focus on the game. Anything that calls to mind the original version helps keep it alive. However, with this version, I just wish there was more to recommend about this than next generation lighting effects and skin textures. I’d really like it if Until Dawn became an anthology series (Dark Pictures Anthology just isn’t doing much for me), although that’s looking increasingly unlikely now. 🫤
The three points where I REALLY missed the original score were 1. Chris coming back to the lodge, 2. The climax at the lodge and 3. The mid-credits interview. The score in each of these scenes elevates the general sentiment of them infinitely better in the old version than in the new one. 🎵
My gripes were definitely how they chose to show that Emily was lying when she told Mike she cheated, and Ashley being to afraid to open the door causing Chris to die, I wasn’t alone in thinking she did it on purpose. Also with the cheating thing with the telescope scene fresh in your mind and how she treats Matt you believe she did cheat it is great that they added that Matt and Emily scene but still
If we have a sequel I want the whole group back idk how but I’d be really disappointed if it was only Sam I like Sam but I’ve also grown to really like the cast of characters we meet and I’m also wondering what happened to them after the original events
Great video❤ I agree with a lot of your points. It was a huge drawback finding out they couldn't keep the original score and sounds for the remake. The wendigos have always been my favourite part of until dawn! Their original screeches never failed to put me on edge, especially when they would put a distant screech that would ramp up tension in the upcoming scene for a character who hadn't seen them yet. It is such a shame that new players will miss out on that truly defining feature of the wendigos. When I heard about actors returning to film I was so hoping that Matt & Jessica's actors would be there. As i feel like all the original really missed was more time with Matt & Jessica slowly escaping the mines together at the end. I got the platinum trophy for the original ps4 version, and was ready to do it all again with the remake, however graphic changes, a few additional collectibles, and a secret ending for Josh (as much as it is a fan letter ending) just isn't worth it for me. If it is ever on sale or free on ps plus, then I will pick it up☺️
Fantastic analysis as always 💜👊🏿! And yeah I think for me the mixed outcome was sort of expected because they remade a game that didn't need to be remade. So a lot of people who missed out on the original game get to enjoy the game in its best performance state, esp with some of the expansions on the characters from the original, which is super dope but for the people who already played the game its one of those where there isn't enough changes to where you "HAVE" to play the game esp at new prices rather than a free upgrade to existing owners or a $5 upgrade type fan service. I think that's where some remakes differ unlike when we see like the resident evil remakes, the mafia remake and even recently the silent hill 2 remake that changes much older games into a next gen feel as opposed to games that were already in a great state (especially titles that came out on ps4 that were already backwards compatible on the new consoles). So you basically have to almost go all in with these types of remakes for them to dodge the inevitable mixed reception. But yeah gonna be interesting to see how they approach the movie and a potential sequel.
Love Ashley, glad they redid that scene. I had my own headcannon for it but it was really hard to defend with the way they framed it. Still hate Emily though, Ive seen that scene with her apologizing, I didnt know it was preorder only. I think my only issue with Sam is just that she is the character with the least amount of depth. She's a badass dont get me wrong but she's kind of a Mary-sue. But as you said I think it's probably because she's the one most likely to have survived.
I poked fun at it in my vid but I honestly loved it. I waited years to play it and enjoyed every bit of it. I understand why the OG players would be a bit critical, but the rest of us that never got to play it appreciate the remake. It's a great game and this will keep it around for another decade.
You waited years to play a game from 2015 that's playable on ps5 and sells for $10? Maybe you weren't actually waiting for anything and just love consuming flavor of the month remakes?
I'm mixed about this remake so Lets gooo, lets nitpick. The biggest positive is indeed, all the new people who are aware and playing UD now, especially in the Halloween month
JESUS HOT SAUCE CHRISTMAS CAKE! I also think they should do a sequel that focuses on Chris (and by extention Ashley, I hope my nerdy babies get married). He was the most connected to Josh that we see, and he saw SO MUCH SHIT, and saw Flamethrower guy die. He's probably got a lot of trauma they could delve into.
Sorry to say this as I actually like a lot of things about the remake, as me saying this gives even more leverage to the original, but Josh's mental health documents as well as that Hannah journal entry aren't new. They were both in the original. The documents are pretty easy to find being in a drawer, but it's understandable if you might have missed the journal entry as you have to swip the touch pad to flip the page in the opposite direction the game tells you to see it. Overall I really love the changes but I'm disappointed that they are done dirty by all the bugs at launch, especially for people who never played the game at all before. I really liked the music at the beginning during the prologue, and the entire Sam chase scene (her taking a bath to the end) But every other part of the game I also prefer the original music. Since the game is now on pc I can anticipate mods being made to re-insert the old music lol. It strikes me as funny that some people didn't want them to change much as I was disappointed they didn't change more. Both Noah Fleiss and Brett Dalton were with Until Dawn from the very beginning, and there is plenty of old audio to pick from from prototype builds. Add to that the fact they had Meghan Martin and Hayden Panetteire (sp?) And they could have done a lot more to add to the dialogue without taking anything away. Even if I wasn't sure if they were going to add anything else, the press for what they changed in the prologue had me hyped but while I enjoy greatly a lot of the new framing, it really struck me that they were really holding fast to only using the original audio, and it's disappointing, especially as people who maybe haven't played UD as much as I have keep saying things in the remake are changes when they already existed in the original. I definitely don't think this remake is bad, but it's not truly great either. They really fumbled at the finish line here. As for sequels... I think trying to make a definitive sequel to Any choice based game like this is a mistake. Every player is going to have their own favourite combo of events, characters saved and characters killed. But that's just my own opinion.
@ninjapancake9 it actually gets explained in the "Events of the past" Clip that you unlock with finding the totems. I would recommend you watch that. It is an Essential piece of lore but players ignore it often.
🎶 if Sam were to return in a sequel, i would love to see her in more of a mentor role, like the flamethrower guy. Maybe the main cast could be a bunch of new characters who engage with the monsters in new and different ways (and maybe have their own "non-supernatural" threat going on, like Josh was in the first game). Sam could appear at one point and only allude to the events of the original game as something tragic, that way leaving more combinations of endings as potentially canon.
The skin texture actually threw me off at first The OG soundtrack, as a concept was also more a movie soundtrack than a game ost. I can sense that difference with the way they applied it to the remake
I agree with you a lot with everything about the remaster. I was disappointed with the background music changing/not fitting properly or just not existing. I’m mixed on the new totem mechanic, Residents of Evil(the guys I watched play this) were all getting frustrated with moving the totem just right to get the vision. While it was nice to see the setup for the prank and Hannah get ready to meet Mike, it always bothered me that there wasn’t any dialogue except the OG dialogue. I understand that most if not all these actors may have been busy with life or other projects but it was still a little disappointing. I was also disappointed that we didn’t get anything new for Jess or Matt. With the hunger totem pole I do kinda wish they did something more with seeing wendigo Hannah’s POV. I’m not entirely sure what they could’ve done to make it fit with the story flow but it still felt like a carrot dangling in front of the audience that doesn’t really do anything. I’m with you on that if they do end up doing a sequel for this story I would enjoy at the very least Sam Mike Chris and possibly Emily go on to be monster hunters. With either the rest of the group not being involved due to trauma or just not doing field work, like Ashley mainly doing research for missions. And this could just be me, but I preferred the OG wendigo sounds. The new sounds just aren’t as scary to me. The high pitched screeching just scratches my brain the right way with these monsters and also kinda gives a callback to the deer like features (or at least elk/caribou sounds) the original Native American stories mention.
Okay so i have a few points to discussion with you. 1. First of all Ashley the feeling that Ashley being shocked that she didn't open the door for Chris. I actually see this scene in remake differently - for me she is going back and forth thinking if she should save Chris or let her pitty win. At the end she decides to open the door for him but it is to late so when he is killed infront of her she feels even more guilty - she wanted to be pitty but she knows that at the end Chris didn't harmed her but not opening the door can get him killed so she decided it's not worth it to be pitty in moment like this because they should do everything to stay together till morning, but because of her dilemma it ended with chris's death. 2. I feel like Mike is not a character that didn't changed because of the remake. It may be just one simple detail changed because the facial expressions looks better but in thw og ver i always felt like he was 100% in the prank on Hannah. In the remake he actually looks like he doesn't want to do this, that he is the main part of the plan and he is almost forced but mainly manipulated by Jess and Em to do this. He didn't thought it will backfire so much and he decided to take a part in that and then maybe apologize to Hannah when they will have a moment to do this, without Emily too close to them. 3. I feel like the way Sam has so severe trauma after the events is 100% valid. I don't think she wasn't traumatized as much as the others. 1st of all she was Hannah best friend - she wasn't have tne strength to save her the year before main events, not only this but because she didn't stoped their friends on time, didn't stopped Hannah and didn't went out for her alone or with help of the other it end up with not only Hannah dying but also Beth. 2nd - she finds out how much of traumatic even it was for Josh, it not only made his mental problems worse, but so bad that he decided to traumatize them back. I think that after this moment she is already so stressed and traumatized that she can't do much without braking - that's why she doesn't fight more to stop Mike from shooting Emily. The adrenaline was mostly down in this moment - they're all (without Josh so almost all) save from Wendigo's so she wants to get it all sorted in her head but then the hell brakes lose again with Emily's bite, she doesn't have power to stop it and keep herself collected and she thinks is better in the situation without another person in the group with complete breakdown. Then she gets another Adrenaline kick to go after Mike and tell him what they found. 3rd - she finds out that her best Friend ate her twin, turned into monster and now trying to eat all of them in the cave. 4th after all of this she is responsible for her friends life, she needs to think fast and do the right things to save them all. One bad move and the rest of them may be dead. She already thinking that Josh, Jess and Matt are probably dead, and now she is responsible who else will come out from all this shit alive. Even in the option where all of them are alive at the end, the all stress she needed to hold in herself by all the day made her mental health to breake
Let me tell you what was the biggest difference on Jessica in the remake that you ignored: The song played on Jessica's phone was replaced. It was the "Hey hey hey" in the original version, which was fantastic and fit the vibe of the game. Now it was changed to some strange song that did not impress me at all.
the “sam” at the sequel clip sounds like the fnaf pizzeria simulator “michael” voice line where spring trap rises from the rubble lol plss someone say they know what im talking abt
Okay so I did get the option for Josh to be remorseful, but Jessica had already died and maybe Chris I can't remember if that scene is after his run for the house. So you definitely don't need them all to live. This is the thing though - I got the remorseful option and took it, I found the journal and Sam told Josh about it, Josh was kidnapped by Hannah when they recognised each other and HE STILL TURNED INTO A WENDIGO AT THE END
the fonts are disgusting, the lighting is boring, the female character models look worse, the music is much worse, the fixed camera was a good stylistic choice, it's full of bugs, this is a demake
the reason why im ok with sam being a bigger focus in a sequel is i think she had the second biggest investment in the game. she is the one who has been keeping up with josh checkin in on him. my biggest thing was. josh pranked the three people who had less involvement in the prank that killed his sister
Remake: 😬 Save Josh: 🥰👏 Ps* watch Gab smolders Until Dawn playthrough on twitch i watched it i wanna say last week and she had a list of specific answers you have to pick with Dr Hill to get the new ending, I can't remember them all because there were quite a few I can remember picking; uneasy of the house Something is in there It's not human Fear of men Crowds Snakes (every option you are given to choose snake which is more than once I believe) And telling Dr Hill you are sorry in the last meeting, I probably missed a few Anyways this is my favorite game of all time and although it can be cringe at times it never fails to give me major nostalgia of the mid 2000s variety when I was young, dumb and wearing a tiered mini skirt in Winter 😂
I still hate the totem-turnin-mini-event xD they really could just have left it as it was since there was nothing wrong with the animation of the totems in the first place
Ashley standing at the door not letting chris inside in the original is better cause it makes the player realize oh shit i chose wrong... you know the whole point of the game
Honestly, I think the new music is good from an actual artistic standpoint, but its usage in the game really does it dirty. I like both the original ost and the new ost but the original was clearly fit into the scenes so much better. I can't lie though I really love the new main theme kicking in during the remake when Mike breaks the light bulb, that goes hard.
I basically agree with everything you mentioned in this review except for the stuff about Sam being a poor choice as a main character for a sequel. Now do I necessarily think this game needs a sequel? Not really lol... In general I think that sequels are never as good as the original and often can feel like pointless cash grabs. But that being said I think if there is a sequel in the works, Sam is honestly the only character it makes sense to focus on for it! She's a well liked character, not overly complex but she has that typical Bad Ass Hollywood Hero vibe going on which is great for a protagonist imo! Plus if they're going the route of having her being traumatised by the events (which was hinted at in one of her interview segments at the end of the game where she insisted she was fine when the interviewer tried to get her to open up, mirroring Josh's own refusal to admit how much his sister's disappearances affected him) I think we could actually get a really intriguing side to her character! Mike or Emily are great characters but they really wouldn't have worked as a protagonist for the potential sequel imo (especially when Sam is so much more intertwined with the Washingtons than any of the other characters, except arguably Chris)... But yeh other than that totally agree with your thoughts, I was really excited when I heard about the remake but it honestly kinda feels like they rushed a lot of the details which is crazy given they've had 9 years to work on it lol...
The new music really is a huge turn off, to me it ruins a lot of moments, especially compared to the original. As much as the graphics look good (except the removal of the blue filter), the new prologue looks fine and Josh's new ending is nice, the music missing the mark makes me want to play the original rather than paying full price for a new inferior version.
Until then, I can wait for mods to restore it. Sure it won’t be as faithful, but it would make do for the PC players. So far, not much updates were made about it but time will tell.
When the remake was announced I was annoyed for some reason even though I never played it and didn’t plan on playing the remake lol. But it does seem like there’s some nice stuff in here, and hey, maybe a potential sequel will be great ❤ I think I was bothered because in my mind, the OG looked really good and didn’t “need” an update, but actually the new work on it looks pretty good
Yes, the graphics are nice and adds a bit more depth to the characters BUT that’s about it. The random music at times where a scene should’ve been serious or put fear in the players head wasn’t there (it also wasn’t as good as the OG). My play through was a bit laggy and I felt like it played more as a movie instead of a game. The jumpscares were a bit whack and I felt the “don’t move” segments were easier. I give this remake a 4/10
nahhh... sam makes the most sense BECAUSE shes the least traumatized. chris doesnt have a brave bone in his body, same with emily. mike, maybe could take her role in a potential sequel, because he was the only one to be brave enough to INTENTIONALLY seek out the monster and Jess. but because she wasnt there, didnt experiende it, i sense a bit of morbid curiosity in her reading about mountain curses, and wanting to understand what happened. the others are too traumatized, and i hope they never have to face any monsters again lmao. id be willing to bet too that Josh is more likely to be locked up than mike. agree to disagree on a lot of your points. but still an interesting video/perspective ❤
A sequel wouldve worked with Sam if they do a version of Laura from The Quarry all that trauma wouldve led her to ending the curse with a different cast along with Mike as like Max but more action packy.
I do not know sadly for the josh ending. I did end up getting on a first run, i didnt try for it i didnt even know the dialouge to be remorseful even needed to be unlocked. I can tell you that reddit thread is wrong bc i did not answer the questions like that at all. I had everyone alive, i stabbed josh with the scissors, i did not hit josh with the bat, i also was not aggressive with him in the shed. So. 🤷. I hope you find it tho! And i hope my steps help maybe
The remake is just to damn expensive especially where I live where the remake I $120NZD when I can just buy the original for $32NZD. It's even more harder of a sell since I already bought the game. I also already got spoiled on the new ending because some guy just straight up put it in his title and thumbnail day 1 and I had the misfortune of it appearing in my recommended and killed any Interest would've had to get the remake.
In my opinion the inclusivity of the way Chris talks isn’t really a big deal. Josh already blames himself and Chris could blame himself too. He could be just trying to spare Ashely’s feelings. Maybe he is just saying it like that since the psycho is clearly blaming all of them for it either way.
I don't understand the confusion with some of the character actions-- tldr we don't need to be spoon-fed information, as human beings shouldn't we be able to deduce conclusions on our own?
I have one gripe. Yes, they changed the scene where Chris dies by removing the ambiguity, but that only takes away from the remake. The original still has that ambiguity. The remake existing doesn't overwrite that.
I agree about the music. It just wasn't there for me. But I love how Emily basically just girl bossed her way through the entire game depending on how you played. I actually am excited for the movie. Video game adaptations have been improving in the last few years. So I'm not too worried.
Not holding high hopes for the movie. April is the 'deadzone'. Thats when studios release the movies they dont think can compete in crowded release slots or more often than not, movies they expect to perform poorly critically and financially. If they thought the movie would do gangbusters theyd release in OCT or theyre so slaphappy confident that itll be an easy Financial Q1 boost that releasing it in APR will make them look real good. Great decisionmaking comes out of Sonys film studios as weve seen in the past 5 years. - Someone that worked distribution for a cinema
Ashley was always my least favorite because of that door scene with Chris, however I HATE that they changed it. Although I dislike Ashley, I love that door scene because that's exactly the type of shit immature and emotional teenagers would do in a life or death situation like that. I dislike Ashley but that doesn't mean I want her removed or improved. I don't have to like a character as long as they have a place in the story. I like her role as the emotional and vengeful one because that's the way a lot of people would act in her situation. Also the new door scene looks so awkward to me. To me it doesn't look like she's contemplating or in shock, to me she looks like she legit can't hear Chris. At least in the original one it is obvious what's happening. It even shows a flashback to Chris choosing to shoot Ashley. But in the new version, I would have no idea why Chris died in that scene. If I never played Until Dawn I would so confused as to how I would have prevented that death. These are just my opinions though
18:46 Might be a delusionnal Ashley Defender but she aint lying, The prank was dumb but thats not an excuse for how dumb it was for Hannah to just...Ran into the woods with barely clothes on
I personally would LOVE a sequel. It would be awesome to have all the characters back, but I don't see a way to get characters like Jess and Ashley back to the mountain. Sam and Mike seem invested enough to hunt the rest of the wendigos, and Josh coming along might make sense for the purposes of getting closure (along with Sam probably). Or, maybe they rescue another group of people foolishly up on the mountain, perhaps someone looking for one of the people that went missing noted on the stranger's board of wendigo sightings? Heck, I wouldn't even be mad at Handigo surviving if they went that route. I just love this game and want them to explore these characters more (and possibly answer the questions we STILL have).
I'll say the graphics have updated but I wish they kept the color grading. It's like if the Twilight movie was color graded differently, the blue tinge is just a part of the story!
Exactly
Bruh they looked like smurfs
but the remake is still blue...?
but the remake is blue
The remake is even bluer. I think people are just confused by the earlier clips with the sun setting, but the game looks way darker and bluer in the remake, in comparison the original looks greyish.
I've found that choosing every option to be nice to Josh (not stabbing him with scissors as Ashley, not hitting him with the plank as Chris, telling him that you're there for him as Sam) also contributes to him feeling remorseful later on. As well as making sure his biggest fear is isolation.
I don’t think the therapy sessions matter, it’s just being nice to him
About Chris’ character, Will Byles (The writer and director) confirmed in a Podcast that Chris did not know about the prank at all and was just written out of it entirely so Josh wasn’t “drunk on his own.” So I’m definitely leaning towards him not wanting to make Ashley feel bad too.
I always thought this was obvious, wild to me that she’s so hung up on it.
@@ondiiinathe VR sequel is actually a prequel about the 1952 miners and the origin of the Wendigo
@@Hardc0riste No. I'm talking about Rush Of Blood which is a sequel. You're talking about The Inpatient, the other VR game, which is a prequel.
my biggest thing is it looks like every scene takes place in a big open void, especially scenes taking place in the lodge. i get it is dark, but it really takes me out of the illusion. Really enjoy watching your streams playing it though!
The og felt like being up in the mountains during a blizzard. The remake feels like being in a dead by daylight trial

I was introduced to this game via the remake. I feel like a newcomer would get more worth buying the remake than a long-time fan would.
I also think Chris knows he would have participated if he wasn't passed out.
Nothing else matters afaik. But might as well do the other things just to make sure
They removed the O death song at the start?! Firstly that song is beautiful, eerie but at the same time beautiful. Secondly, the song has connotations linking to the identity of the game, specifically Hannah and her descent into becoming a wendigo. That’s a disappointment to hear
Spoiler alert
They lost rights to music, same for the choosing sounds and butterfly effect sound
I actually really didn't like the version of O Death they did in the game, it was really grating compared to the version I'm familiar with.

@@jakedizzle the game came out 9 years ago if you haven’t played it before the remaster then that’s on you
To get the ending, you have to
1) make sure everyone survives
2) Josh has to know Hannah is the wendigo
3) choose they hurt me first, then the sorry option should open up
This is the method I saw someone use in a different video, and it seemed to work
This remake is certainly a mixed feeling for those who played the OG.
I've had a special spot in my heart for the original and constantly rewatched playthroughs, seeing the new prologue cutscene was....underwhelming
The dialogue between characters is awkward, it's like watching a Disney channel show without the laugh track.
There were only 2 days between this release and when all the preorders for the later hit and everyone began streaming it
What iks me is lack of "Oh death"; because of how it ties to Hannahs character and her transformation
OH MY GOD, i totally forgot that was in the original! it was badass and got you so hyped. now i’m sad they excluded it.
Does anyone else in the group see through her?”
and in the original that scene is like you’re actually getting a look at who Ashley really is when no one can challenge her or is able to expose her true nature to other people and the depths she’s willing to go to punish others for not falling for her manipulations.
She literally begs you to shoot her 🙃
I think the reason why people’s views on Ashley are so polarized is because, among all the protagonists, her personality can be shaped and molded the most by the player’s choices.
It seems that with that porch scene, they wanted to clarify how the original interaction was meant to be taken.
i also hated ashley because i cannot STAND fake people lol like emily is horrible but at least she says it to your face.
The amount of stuff she's went through is ridiculous.
it definitely sounds more like dr. hill than josh at the end
Sam being a pacifist who has trouble standing up to her friends is her character for sure though. Unless you mean something else.
The music changes are like when you’re favorite show came out on DVD and immediately being disappointed because any music changes effect the mood
It was just a prank Han!

I feel the EXACT same way about the music/soundtrack. I was taking notes while I was watching gameplay (just for fun) and the soundtrack came up multiple times 💔💔🎶🎶
So glad to hear you say emily is your fav because that was a hill i was sitting on seemingly alone for nearly the past decade
I’m happy there’s renewed focus on the game.
If you read 'The Final Girl Support Group' (which is great), I can see that plot throughline being one that'd suit an Until Dawn sequel.
@@TheHasmith99why are you so triggered about someone enjoying a game?

I'm mixed about this remake so Lets gooo, lets nitpick.
The biggest positive is indeed, all the new people who are aware and playing UD now, especially in the Halloween month
Grabs popcorn!
My poor boy
I think people really like to nitpick. I thought everything was very intentional and well done and seamless
Really looked forward to your Until Dawn Remake stuff
Wasn't it always clear that Hannah was the wendigo that dragged jess, because the miner wendigos were trapped in the Sanatorium or am i lost now?
If they were all trapped, what would the Stranger have been fighting the night of the prank?
@ninjapancake9 it actually gets explained in the "Events of the past" Clip that you unlock with finding the totems. I would recommend you watch that. It is an Essential piece of lore but players ignore it often.
your editing is so good wow
🎶 if Sam were to return in a sequel, i would love to see her in more of a mentor role, like the flamethrower guy. Maybe the main cast could be a bunch of new characters who engage with the monsters in new and different ways (and maybe have their own "non-supernatural" threat going on, like Josh was in the first game). Sam could appear at one point and only allude to the events of the original game as something tragic, that way leaving more combinations of endings as potentially canon.
The skin texture actually threw me off at first
The OG soundtrack, as a concept was also more a movie soundtrack than a game ost.
The high pitched screeching just scratches my brain the right way with these monsters and also kinda gives a callback to the deer like features (or at least elk/caribou sounds) the original Native American stories mention.
i think the most important part to getting the remorseful option is making sure everyone else is alive up to that point
banger video, very underatted !!
I hated how when it showed the Wendigo or talked about it Native American generic sounds would play😭😭😭
Remake: 😬
Save Josh: 🥰👏
Ps* watch Gab smolders Until Dawn playthrough on twitch i watched it i wanna say last week and she had a list of specific answers you have to pick with Dr Hill to get the new ending, I can't remember them all because there were quite a few I can remember picking; uneasy of the house
Something is in there
It's not human
Fear of men
Crowds
Snakes (every option you are given to choose snake which is more than once I believe)
And telling Dr Hill you are sorry in the last meeting, I probably missed a few
Anyways this is my favorite game of all time and although it can be cringe at times it never fails to give me major nostalgia of the mid 2000s variety when I was young, dumb and wearing a tiered mini skirt in Winter 😂
O death is not only the only option thematically and tonally but it represents Hannah's story at large. Getting rid of it was a horrible choice
I still hate the totem-turnin-mini-event xD they really could just have left it as it was since there was nothing wrong with the animation of the totems in the first place
Been waiting for this one
Ashley standing at the door not letting chris inside in the original is better cause it makes the player realize oh shit i chose wrong... you know the whole point of the game
30:40 this secret page of the diary was in the original too btw
ooo this is gonna be good!!
I hope we get Sam and Mike/Josh in Dead by Daylight, and the rest of the cast could be legendary skins
The remake is superior in every way
Until then, I can wait for mods to restore it.
Sure it won’t be as faithful, but it would make do for the PC players. So far, not much updates were made about it but time will tell.
@@DeterminedTorres gonna be a little weird to play with the old music in chapter 1 with the sun still out don’t you think?
great video!
They did my boy Matt dirty😭😭 of topic soul ik the answer is probably but is it possible i can help in your chat for mod
When the remake was announced I was annoyed for some reason even though I never played it and didn’t plan on playing the remake lol. But it does seem like there’s some nice stuff in here, and hey, maybe a potential sequel will be great ❤
I think I was bothered because in my mind, the OG looked really good and didn’t “need” an update, but actually the new work on it looks pretty good
Idk if this can help but I played the remake in french and when Chris talk about the prank they translate it by "you"
Yes, the graphics are nice and adds a bit more depth to the characters BUT that’s about it.
I give this remake a 4/10
the $70 steam price tag might have something to do with it
nahhh... sam makes the most sense BECAUSE shes the least traumatized. chris doesnt have a brave bone in his body, same with emily. mike, maybe could take her role in a potential sequel, because he was the only one to be brave enough to INTENTIONALLY seek out the monster and Jess. but because she wasnt there, didnt experiende it, i sense a bit of morbid curiosity in her reading about mountain curses, and wanting to understand what happened. the others are too traumatized, and i hope they never have to face any monsters again lmao. id be willing to bet too that Josh is more likely to be locked up than mike.
agree to disagree on a lot of your points. but still an interesting video/perspective ❤
A sequel wouldve worked with Sam if they do a version of Laura from The Quarry all that trauma wouldve led her to ending the curse with a different cast along with Mike as like Max but more action packy.
problem with the music, is that it doesnt feel like an ost from 90s slasher teen movie. The genre supermassive are taking character archetypes from
5:15 should’ve been the end of the introduction tab
Honestly if i found that with pics in it of everything that happend... i say the same thing as mike... hes just real...
Uh Chris is not more interesting than Sam. And Jessica is far more traumatized than Chris.
Sam is the final girl. It makes sense she leads the sequel
Hopefully, your Chris issues are answered in the Until Dawn movie. Should be out real soon
Somehow Dashie got the ending so maybe you can watch his videos! And he missed the scissor stab with Sam...
I just got done watching a playthrough of the original game. I honestly forgot how much I HATED Emily.
The remake existing doesn't overwrite that.
she literally begs you to shoot her, for her to beg and then act so cold makes no sense
Your viewpoint is skewed the first time you see the wendigo proper is with Matt when it's trying to kill him
I heard you have to not hurt Josh with any of the characters and make sure you reveal his fear is isolation

These are just my opinions though
hate that the art style of the game is just gone
Yez please, we need Mike in jail
Where's the nit picking gangy
Does it have to do with Josh picking himself as the person he likes the least? That’s how I got I’m sorry in the original
they nerfed ashley :(
