Thank you so much for the reaction and the shout out. I’m glad you enjoyed the song. James LaBrie is polarizing even amongst the most loyal DT fans. There is no question that he has ( or had) talent, I think that his situation is very difficult. Instrumentally, Dream Theater is technically proficient. That only comes from hard work, discipline and sacrifice and unfortunately this particular vocalist falls short in those areas. Still, at times he can be quite impressive and at this point I cannot imagine another person in his place. I appreciate that you read and respond to comments and thanks again for reacting to my favorite Dream Theater song.
It was a pleasure, John! You’re absolutely right in what you said about LaBrie. He’s not to he best, but could imagine anyone else. Thanks for watching! - Nick
His vocal history is similar to the likes of Ian Gillian and Rob Halford. They don't always are at their best, if that makes sense. It's just that prog metal enjoyers are sort of picky and it creates this myriad of biases and expectations related to perfectionism. LaBrie is awesome, period. We're just a very picky bunch.
If one wants to appreciate James (at least his early stuff), one needs only listen to "V. Another World" from their song "A Change of Seasons". Their best vocal section of their discography and one of the best of any band. For recommending a single song, I'd choose "Innocence Faded".
My first reaction to this song the first time I heard it: “This is like a futuristic version of Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas and Foreplay/Longtime by Boston.”
I have been a Dream Theater fan since I bought this album in '91 or '92 whenever it first came out. There was no one who sounded like this back then and I was totally blown away. This song is my favorite off of this album and one of my favorite DT songs in general. Nice to see it get some loving on UA-cam :)
James has been a topic of many a discussion and criticism due to his vocal accident. However, please remember that Dream Theater played so many shows over the course of their long career that were “an evening with”, having a full 3 hour plus concert. In rock, that is unheard of, especially for such a long period of time. Respect 🤙
Personally I don't understand this polarizing issue about James LaBrie. He is a great singer, very proficient and steady, and has been matching perfectly with one of the most technically challenging bands in the whole world. Being able to keep up with the complicated time signatures and melodies Dream Theater comes up with and having done that for over 25 years straight, is not a lame achievement. And just for the record: he trains with an opera singer, so he is not any aficionado. Great reaction, and I'm glad Lex finally gave LaBrie an opportunity.
My worlds are colliding seeing a DT / prog metal fan reacting while wearing Leinenkugel's gear. (Family in Chippewa Falls, WI.) Great reaction to one of the best songs from an all-time seminal album. This is always the guitar solo I point to as my favorite ever.
Just discovered you two. Great channel. Huge DT fan. This track has one of the best drumming grooves ever. And one of my favorite solos from John Petrucci. Please check out Symphony X - Serpent's Kiss, Kamelot - March Of Mephisto, and King's X - Dogman or Over My Head.
As a fan from the first album, the addition of Labrie shot them up to becoming my fav band. Following his vocal accident he was never the same, but this stuff is very hard to sing over.
James LaBrie in the 90s was amazing. I thought he was one of the better vocalists out there. If you guys don’t know, he had an unfortunate bout of severe food poisoning in the mid 90s that made him so violently ill that he suffered some damage to his vocal chords. He can still sing very well, as can be heard on their albums, but he definitely has issues performing live. Sadly, sometimes he sounds more like a screeching cat than a singer when trying to hit those high notes. He struggles and it can really be very distracting. A lot of DT fans are very critical of his performances but I feel badly for him because that had to have been a very hard thing to accept. I’ve seen DT live three times and I thought he still did really well all three times. That said, his performances on record are still stellar. I can understand not being a fan of his vocal abilities live. My favorite James LaBrie songs for his vocals are: Another Day Surrounded Innocence Faded Voices The Mirror Lifting Shadows Off a Dream Space Dye Vest Anna Lee Blind Faith Endless Sacrifice Octavarium The Ministry of Lost Souls
Michael!!! ;)
I recall when I first discovered Dream Theater describing them to a friend as if Metallica was fronted by George Michael, and I don't consider that a bad thing.
Are you familiar with Fates Warning? They pre-date Dream theater and are considered one of the godfathers of prog metal, and a big influence on DT in the early days, they're form the same neck of the woods as well. The founding guitarist and original vocalist (who left in 1986) joined up and made a couple albums in the last decade which are two of the most amazing prog-metal albums I've ever heard. Try Arch/Matheos "Stained Glass Sky" or "Kindred Spirits".
James Labrie voice at this time was a good as anyone in the history of rock/metal…..Geddy Lee!!!???? REALLY?????????????????? James Labrie….is in the pantheon of the greats…
Kevin Moore, I believe wasn't getting along with Portnoy and also had some misunderstanding with Petrucci, who were childhood friends themselves. In an interview recently, Petrucci said Moore never spoke to him since he left the band. Something serious must have happened behind the doors
I know LaBrie is the most polarizing member of DT. I like his vocals, but I definitely prefer his softer vocals. I love him in Ayreon because of that. If you're not familiar, definitely check out The Day That The World Breaks Down by Ayreon. There may be other musicians you're familiar with
James LaBrie was an amazing singer. Sadly, he got sever food poisoning in the mid 90s and also he did not have a sustainable technique causing tear on his vocal chords. Anyway, if wife does not think early 90s La Brie singing is god-tier, I would like to hear her recommendations ;)
I believe Kevin Moore left because he didn't like the fame. If I remember correctly. There is a great DT biography book called 'Lifting Shadows' I would highly recommend it for any DT fan.
Hey Nick and Lex you should check out some of Kevin Moore's solo stuff. Please react to Wednesday the Sky. It's such a beautiful piece of music. Moore's OSI albums are also spectacular!!
We’ll definitely both be bawling in that one! It was the first DT song Nick ever played for me when we started dating. Brings back a lot of memories! Will definitely do that one! - Lex
Anesthetize (studio w/ Alex Lifeson) coming VERY soon! Check out the video we just posted about why we haven’t done live versions yet. Thanks for joining us! :) - Lex
Hey you play all the " Air Instruments" !!!! Hehe And: You can study to play technicaly perfect ! But you cant study to play cool !!!!! You are cool or you are not !! And so you play !!! Metallica and PAntera are just cool !!!!! And their RIFFS are, too !!!
Totally agreed!! I just can't help myself in playing the air instruments... I'm so passionate and I even do this when listening to music on my own. Thanks for your reply! - Nick
Great song, James was good here but later on and live performances he's really annoying to hear to, the first singer Charlie Dominicci was a much better option imho but he was much older than the other guys, plus the keyboard player here Kevin Moore is the better one they ever had
Pick any member of DT and he’s on a level, that all the members of Metallica combined couldn’t reach in a million years even if they tried. I like the good old Metallica too though. But you can’t say, they are equally good, that is just a great lie or misjudgment. 😂
I love Metallica but come on…as far as talent goes…Dream Theater is on a completely higher level and musicianship than them. It’s not even debatable! They play circles around Metallica with emotion and diversity to boot
No offense to Dream Theater, but they got seriously outclassed in the composer department by Symphony X. If you haven't heard of them, think of a Prog Metal band with the same instrumental make up as Dream Theater, with a vocalist who made an early career out of announcing Medieval tournaments at a dinner theater and has a HUGE range, and a guitarist that has the same style as Petrcucci, but also arranges the orchestral components of the song. Their songs are just more... coherent and themed. While DT tends to go all over the place for the sake of going all over the place to show off, Symphony X always feels like they have a point to their insanity. :p Here's a mini-epic off of an album that features one of the best epic Prog Songs ever. See what you think - ua-cam.com/video/6Kb8SVgbzgM/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for your comments! We beat you to it! Check out our Symphony X reaction -- Nick is a huge fan! ua-cam.com/video/LJkUr4HIVg8/v-deo.html We will definitely check out that link though! Also -- realized I never replied to your previous comment on Rush. We will add Mission to the list for you! :) Thanks again for your support! - Lex
That Guitar solo always gets me. So good.
Thank you so much for the reaction and the shout out. I’m glad you enjoyed the song.

Labrie is FLAWLESS

That solo is like an A to Z for all guitar players no matter if one is a beginner or an expert.
I was 16 when Images & Words came out in 92 lol yes I'm up in age now 😂 lovin your channel 👍🏼 keep goin! 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
Thank you 💞 Yes I was also very young then. Greta memories

I really believe James Labrie sounds great on Distance Over Time. Check out some songs from that album especially Pale Blue Dot.

Great musicianship! A Prog rocker through and through

La mejor actuación de Labrie fue en el Score 2006 , cuando logró recuperarse, después tuvo una recaída .
Please The ministry of lost souls live version.

Love that!!!
How about something very different - Tunisian metal band, Myrath. Perhaps start with the song 'Tales of the Sands' live in Carthage.
Mike Portnoy was incredible in this song 🤗👍👍

react when you can Southern Empire - Hold and Unitopia - more than a dream!
Try to listen Dream Theater - Best Of Time
I don't get what specifically she doesn't like about his voice. I guess some people prefer a baritone voice for rock but idk.
Great song, James was good here but later on and live performances he's really annoying to hear to, the first singer Charlie Dominicci was a much better option imho but he was much older than the other guys, plus the keyboard player here Kevin Moore is the better one they ever had
lex, do you get bothered when nick constantly looks at you and does weird things with his hands 😂😂😂
Not really ;)
kevin moore is a doctor in psychiatry today. information is easy to find. when he left, i lost interest in dream theater. he was one of a kind.
Uhh!! Sorry but DT is better! 😆
Yes miles better..
