Dream Theater have the high pitch of the 80's rock singer the heavy metal sound of the 80's and the sens of rock progressive of the 70's. Pure pleasure for an old mama like me who grow up with those old bands. All in one. Nice that you can appreciate it
This is from their live DVD/CD set, Score released in 2006 with original drummer, Mike Portnoy. John Petrucci plays Ernie Ball Music Man guitars. He has his own signature models.
Rush will always be my favorite, that being said Dream Theater is the most talented group of musicians ever assembled. John Pettrucci is as good as any guitar player living or dead. Btw . The band proudly states “without Rush there would be no Dream Theater. I suggest you stick to this album for a few tracks, Metropolis pt.1, Learning to Live but honestly every track is incredible. ✌️☝🏼☝🏼✌️
So glad you are reacting to Dream Theater. There is a definite Rush influence here. DT chose their first band name , “Majesty”, while waiting in line for a Rush concert and talking about how majestic a particular song from “Caress of Steel” sounded. They also had a long time motto of WWRD - “what would Rush do”. They have some very Rush inspired songs… the first one that came to mind is “The Best of Times”. They also have covered Rush songs. There is a fairly recent cover of Xanadu by them
Some of the Dream Theater songs to check out - 'Pull me under'... 'Scarred'... 'The glass prison'... 'New millennium'... 'The Count of Tuscany' ... 'A fortune in lies' ... 'The spirit carries on' ... 'Octavarium' ... 'Constant motion'... 'On the backs of angels'... 'This dying soul'... 'The looking glass'... 'Pale blue dot'... 'A view from the top of the world'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Dream Theater are huge Rush fans; to have Neil Peart name-check the band back in 1991 in an interview when no one knew them, was just so great! The band was formed in New York... but the singer James LaBrie (who joined in 1991 after their 1st album) is from Canada, same as Rush. Dream Theater came together in 1985 when the 3 founding members (drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist John Petrucci & bassist John Myung) met in Berklee College on Music (Their current drummer Mike Mangini taught there as an instructor!) They originally named the band Majesty, inspired by Rush's music. Keyboardist Kevin Moore was added to the line-up. They made a demo w/ vocalist Chris Collins around 1986. Besides being prog rock fans (Rush, Yes, King Crimson, early Genesis, Frank Zappa, Kansas), Dream Theater were also fans of heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Metallica, Megadeth... those influences shaped their sound. Majesty was signed in 1988 and recorded their first album 'When dream & day unite' w/ singer Charlie Dominici... but the name was already taken (They kept an 'M' logo, despite the name change). Mike Portnoy's dad in California suggested the name Dream Theater after a movie house there... However, the album was low-budget, and was never promoted after its release in 1989... Charlie Dominici was out of the band by 1990. A long search for a lead singer finally ended when Kevin James LaBrie from Canada was recruited in 1991 (shortened to James LaBrie) as Dream Theater had a new album written but not recorded. Atco Records bought out their contract and their demos were already generating a strong buzz. The 2nd album 'Images & words' was released in 1992, and the single 'Pull me under' took off on radio and MTV as the record went gold in the US (half million copies sold) and was a hit in Europe & Asia as well... 3rd album 'Awake' was heavier, and keyboardist Kevin Moore quit the band before its release in 1994... Derek Sherinian (keyboards) did the tour and joined in 1995... but Dream Theater's album sales had dropped by the 4th album 'Falling into infinity'... Jordan Rudess (keyboards) replaced Sherinian in 1999 and Dream Theater began to solidify their fanbase w/ the album 'Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a memory' and played 3 hr sets on world tours. Going into 2010 on a string of successful albums and tours... founding drummer Mike Portnoy announced that he was leaving the band. After extensive auditions that were recorded for an online documentary, Mike Mangini (drums) was picked as Portnoy's replacement. Dream Theater's latest album 'A view from the top of the world' in 2021 has been another creative standout... John Petrucci also recently recorded a 2nd instrumental solo album 'Terminal velocity' in 2020 w/ Mike Portnoy on drums, as well as prog instrumental side project Liquid Tension Experiment w/ Portnoy, Rudess and bassist Tony Levin... James LaBrie has also released his 6th solo album 'Beautiful shade of grey' in 2022. Jordan Rudess has release instrumental and piano albums recently. Meanwhile, ex-drummer Mike Portnoy, since 2011, has kept busy w/ a variety of musical projects - The Winery Dogs, Flying Colors (w/ guitarist Steve Morse of Deep Purple), Transatlantic, The Neal Morse Band, Sons of Apollo (w/ keyboardist Derek Sherinian) etc...
Good call on the rush. They're a progression of Rush. Just like tool is. I think every dream theater song is amazing. Fave album is 'Train of thought' but long island band. Worth investing time into
The singer is Canadian but the Bassists, Lead Guitar and drummer are from Long Island. The keyboardist went to Julliard but not sure where he was born. The main dudes are the guitar player and the drummer. This not the original singer but he has been with them since around 1990. This is like the third key broadest. He joined in the mid 90's. They replaced the drummer about 10 years ago over typical rock start drama. My personal opinion is they may be better musically but the songs are not quit as good since the old drummer left.
Petrucci uses Music Man guitars, but originated from Ibanez guitars ;). Octavarium is a must. It’s a journey that perfectly displays what the band is about.
Dream theater is a combination of amazing technical ability and great song writing. Until they get a bit to technical that is. They are a band that can get a bit showy for me when it comes to their transitions and number of notes being played every second. When they get it right, it’s amazing music. But they can lose me very quickly at times. While some musicians will hate me for even saying that, I approach music from a standpoint where I want complexity that can be digested. Dream theater can be tiring at times. But overall they are still one of my favorite bands.
so glad I found your channel brother! keep it up! my only suggestion is "images" by cacophony. it features Marty Freidman (guitarist for Megadeth) and Jason Becker. since you're a music nut like me I'm sure you'll appreciate the melodic quality's of the track. best of luck!
They’re American, the Singer is Canadian. Panic Attack should be next! Mike Portnoy is the best Drummer alive! IMO. Is a huge Neil Peart fan. John Petrucci is an Elite Guitarist. The Keyboard player Jordan Ruddess was accepted to the Juilliard School of music in the 2nd grade. And named the best “ EVER “ by music radar!
I haven't heard a lot of dream theater so I'm happy you're doing this so that it forces me to listen to it, but just based on this song it sounds like Queensryche, Rush, and Metallica had a baby :-)
I find it hard to believe these guitarist have never heard of a band especially dream theater. Guy knows rush, but never heard of DT... What ever it takes for views i guess.

Great request, Ginger! And reaction John!

Neil Peart once said that Mike Portnoy was his favorite drummer (besides himself).

The singer is from Canada, the rest of the band are from the USA!
You will love the octavarium record.
I think John uses Musicman guitars. The solo is great. Very musical, not just an exhibition of skills.

Yess! Great reaction! More Dream Theater please!
Between 1995 and 1999, Ibanez released signature John Petrucci guitars.
Happy man who doesn't know Dream Theater. Now you will explore the best discography in progressive métal. So many great songs. I envy you...
Like one of the other comments mentioned I hear a definite influence of Queensryche especially with the singer
Queensryche is on my list :)
Yeah they throttle everyone
Petrucci plays Music Man Majesty Guitars, his own design. They come in 6 and 7 string models.

Really good reaction, you can check Breaking All Illusion, The Dark Eternal Night, Awaken The Master, The Glass Prison from them discography.
Excelente reacción, te recomiendo Fatal Tragedy live in London de Dream Theater , suscrito!!
