Hi, Beth. DT is one of my favorite bands. It was 1993; about a year later LaBrie, the vocalist, unfortunately got food poisoning and broke his vocal chord that forced him to compromise his singing for decade. Oh, and this February they just released their 14th album. It's great, in case you're curious to listen how LaBrie sings now.
the best part about JLBs vocal cord problems is that after years and years of excellent coaching, his vocals are arguably better now than they have ever been, even before the incident. James really worked his fucking ass off to get his voice back.
@@philipschulze8213 Yeah, Mate; that's a good video discussing LaBrie's voice. Food poisoning is a part of the case, but to say it was "small part" is downplaying its crucial effect to LaBrie's case. Not even that video say it was "small". However, it's true that the food poisoning per se is not the reason why LaBrie's voice getting worse. We must look at the context at the time. In an interview, he said that after the poisoning, he should take a rest and not singing for a couple of months. But, he "ignored" it because at the time, DT need to grab their momentum by touring after the success of "Image and Words". LaBrie himself knew what the risk was. But, chance doesn't come twice, right? So, basically he just forced himself to fulfil his duty as the vocalist and frontman of the band, eventhough the decision damaging to his asset in a long run.
@@brent3522 ... And super demanding songs, brutal tour schedules (with every show usually take 2,5 hour long), etc., etc. as well. "The Curious Case of James LaBrie" is discussing quite fairly a 'thesis' about almost all possible reasons.
I loved your reaction. I love also how you appreciated the entire band individually. Sadly, James LaBrie can't sing like this any more. He was amazing back here
He can still deliver, Nathan, I went to see the Scenes From a Memory anniversary tour, they start with the new album, but when they finish the new album and start Scenes set, is like as if James had a twin brother thats can sing the whole album amazingly good and in the same original keynit was released! I am so glad I could check that show in my bucket list wich such an amazing performance!!
@@fmbar00 that surely is good to know, since I'm going to my 5th DT concert this December, and I confess I was a little worried about how would James be singing.
The instrumental section of Metropolis is just masterful. It becomes increasingly chaotic and mad and whatever keyboard effect the keyboard player (whoever was before Rudess) is perfect. Love it.
Yeah, I had a few Dream Theater songs on my ipod in high school (early 2010s), and I liked their older stuff quite a bit. But I kept meeting TONS of older guys that LOVED dream theater, and I never really understood why. Then I watched their 1993 Tokyo live stuff, and it was like an entirely different band. That was when I understood and came to respect the old DT fans, because they were the ones that saw it happen live, when these guys were at their peak, and THAT's what they imagine when they think of the band.
Technically, LaBrie is a much better singer now than he was back then. If you go back through the progression of live vids from the Images & Words tour through to the Octavarium tour, and then the subsequent tours after Octavarium, his live performances deteriorated up until that Octavarium tour. Like most vocalists, he most likely did not learn the "tricks of the trade" for preserving his voice throughout those early tours. I think I remember reading he did some extensive work with a vocal coach to address a lot of that (which a lot of other professional vocalists do) and it has made a drastic difference in the quality of his voice throughout the tour. Meaning that in the early days, if you caught them at the beginning of a tour segment, you got a much better performance than if you caught them at the end of a tour. Now he's much better at maintaining consistency throughout.
@@daviddecker404 Yes, David. agree, that LaBrie is more consistent nowadays... singing off-tune. His voice is just not what it used to be any more. Some say that he overused his voice or didn't use correct singing techniques in the early years of DT, which has affected his singing abilities (I also know about the food poisoning incident), I can't comment on those things, but I just don't find that voice very appealing any more on live concerts. I do listen to studio recordings, which are still relatively decent. Not here to start an argument, just my subjective opinion.
You took me by surprise Beth. DT is one of my favorite bands ever! So glad to see it on your channel. Mainly because LaBrie's vocal has always been criticized. I for one, love the feeling he gives to the songs, but the music is what makes Dream Theater great.
5 років тому+2
LaBrie is very underrated. He is in a bad spot because he is in a band of great musicians whose songs rely so much on instrumentals.
Someone needs to react to King Diamond, but I don't know why everyone recommends Abigail. Mercyful Fate and KD both have better songs, though I'd struggle to pick a favorite.

At 10:10 mark you can cleary see her mind was not ready for the shear petrucciness of the guitar solo and melts away. DT should come with one of those "parental warning" labels, but for explicit instrumentals, for risk of mind blowing. I laughet at 11:45 when she says "everyone is gonna be trying to do this at home... YOU WILL NEVER GET THERE". Yep. Hahaha! Classic Petrucci psyco exercises there.
I know you appreciate good musicianship, but if you're going to do more Dream Theater, expect lots more bits with no singing. This instrumental break's actually pretty short by their standards... :3
Fun Fact about Dream Theater: Most of them (Not all) Met at Berkley School of Music. They dropped out and found success. Now most of the members are teachers (part time) at Berkley.
Mangini was a professor at Berklee...and DT core (JP, Myung and Portnoy) are Berklee dropouts. You should check facts before posting lies...and its Berklee in Boston, not Berkley in California.
Please, please, PLEASE listen to The Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater and give us your review. Your cometary of this footage is the most accurate I've ever seen. Loved this band for many years and its nice to see younger musicians take on them. Thank You so very much!
One of the all-time greatest. The sound they achieved on Images and Words will never be replicated, it's so unique. Metropolis, Under a Glass Moon, and Learning to Live in particular sound like nothing else.
I love how honest your reaction is to the music. As a long time Dream Theater-fan, it's amazing to watch someone listen to this stuff for the first time and get that immediate "wow"-feeling. Gives me goosebumps. Music connects people because even without words to describe it, I know exactly what you hear and feel just by your reaction. (Sorry for this sidetrack, but I really needed to say this.)
@@isaiahmumaw Coming from both a DT and SX fan I don't think it would work. Allen's voice belongs in that symphonic beautiful space that just captures your soul. SX is perfect for his style, but DT doesn't do that all the time and it would throw the vocals off.
I came here for Dream Theater. I stayed for your interpretation! Portnoys drumming is incredible. James's voice is really hit and miss, but he definitely has the talent. Back in 2010, Dream Theater was playing with Iron Maiden in my hometown and I had never seen them live. Now, my dad was the one that really got me into this music, and he had never seen Iron Maiden live before, even though it was one of his favorite bands. So, I bought a ticket for him, and we spent that time together. I still have it somewhere. That was a good day 😊 I like spending that time with my dad. He's always been there for me, and I really see him as someone I aspire to be. It helps that he's my bassist lol
Didn't really expect Dream Theater considering how much of their music is instrumental but I'm not complaining because they are one of my favorite bands. If you do another song by them A Change of Seasons or Octavarium are masterpieces, although they are pretty long. Otherwise I reccomend Stranger Things by Periphery.
Beth. Without a doubt the best I've seen doing these sorts of lessons. You always make it about the technique, the music and not about you. I watched every video. Fantastic job. Thank you.
Dream Theatre (Oz spelling) were always "mathematical" and super precise ... like digital callipers for sound. I'm a bit of a DT newbie, but understand they are profoundly adept at being tighter than a fishes clacker on Sunday during a winter storm while Grandpa is having a shotgun crisis with the back flap open. $0.02 ... love your insight Beth ... just bringing some Tasmanian randomness to the equation.
I was lucky enough to see them quite a few times during the Images and Words tour. And SO many times since. Musical geniuses...all of them. Also...my favorite Petrucci solo. It has SO much style.
Of all the members in Dream Theater James gets by far the most criticism. He's really an amazing singer, but his voice can be a bit of an acquired taste and a lot of people never manage to acquire it.
He's a lot like Geddy Lee. There's nothing technically wrong with his singing but it doesn't resonate with some people. But Labrie likes to bounce around a lot which I think hinders his voice at times. Hitting those high notes takes a lot of air, and when you're running and hopping about, you steal some of that valuable air from the notes.
that is true, but another factor is that hes in a band with john myung, john petrucci, jordan rudess and mike/mike (also known as god, god, god, god and god). i cant think of anyone who wouldnt pale at least a bit next to those performers
Or King Diamond. Now HE'S an acquired taste. Andy LaRoque keeps you listening, and eventually you actually start to appreciate what he's doing with his ridiculous falsetto is very complex and original
It's always fun to watch someone new to Dream Theater listen to them for the first time. Also, thank you for these videos! I'm not a singer (outside of my car, anyway), but I love hearing about the technical aspects of music broken down by experts.
Beth, I came for a react to Rush, and fell into the rabbit hole of your wonderful videos. Technical expertise aside, the pure joy you show watching wonderful things is what makes you so great to watch.
That was in 1993. Their images and words album years. That album included their song pull me under which became their most famous song and probably the song that put them on the map. They just released their new album earlier this year. And its an amazing album
The thing I find funny about that is Pull Me Under is probably the weakest song on the album (which isn't to say it's a bad song, more that the album is so good!).
I love how at first she seems a bit skeptical about it being metal and stuff, but by the end she's totally gushing over all of them. They truly are an amazing band
@@charlesw4316 Cemetary Gates was in their very early days to be fair. Years of drink, drugs, smoking and heavier vocals killed that range of his voice.
I discovered your channel this past week. I’m truly loving your videos. What’s important to note about this exact performance, James suffered from severe food poisoning. He ended up damaging his vocal chords from the severe vomiting, and he says it took almost 5 years to regain his full voice. So he is not at his full strength here. Live at Budokon (around 2006), is the live version to compare to. DT is such an amazing band, and I had the chance to meet them after a show. James spoke with me for about 10 minutes. @@joedorer8867 Not so much he can't, he did use some rasp on the Elements of persuasion album (although that was 2005). Today he probably could do it, with proper practice and technique. The high notes are different, he certainly can't hit those notes the way he did in the early '90s. His technique for the 'rasp' wasn't good for his voice. One reason he stopped doing it was it was harming his voice. Another vocal coach on UA-cam went into detail about it, I cannot recall who it was, but if I find the video I will link it.

Hello from California. Just wanted to share with you that the singer had a side band. 5 Tenners something. Oprah.
Bass solo Yetzi Jam by Dream Theater
LaBrie so underrated..he made Dream Theatre. Brilliant. This was DT at their greatest..they were never better
Well, i think they got better when Jordan came in. :D
We did it boys, one more on the DT army ;)
M4XC4V413R4 lol get a life
What makes you think she's in the "DT Army"?
She gave no indication she intended on getting into them and listening to more of their stuff nor seemed all that impressed. She just talked about fry and distortion she whole time
which is ironic in a way since there's almost no distortion or vocal fry on the album but he does it tons more live as opposed to in the studio
Dream Theater is phenomenal. Every single member are considered the top in metal. John Petrucci is just amazeballs on the guitar. Just so dumb how good they are.
LaBrie is widely considered a very mediocre metal singer and easily the weakest member of DT. Petrucci is indeed amazeballs, however.
@S0FTM1GU3L guthrie doesnt count, he is on a level that humans shouldnt be able to achieve. He is probably some kind of divine alien robot or something
john petrucci before the thicc john petrucci beard
And the thicc john petrucci biceps ^^
He isn’t daddy petrucci yet.
This is still the “I’ll F yo B backstage” Petrucci
before he decide to become Jesus
Conor Murphy ha, Daddy Trooch!
Hi, Beth. DT is one of my favorite bands. It was 1993; about a year later LaBrie, the vocalist, unfortunately got food poisoning and broke his vocal chord that forced him to compromise his singing for decade. Oh, and this February they just released their 14th album. It's great, in case you're curious to listen how LaBrie sings now.
fuck i just know that. I always wonder why he cant never sing that high again
the best part about JLBs vocal cord problems is that after years and years of excellent coaching, his vocals are arguably better now than they have ever been, even before the incident. James really worked his fucking ass off to get his voice back.
Bad technique, tension and over fatigue. Age as well
@@philipschulze8213 Yeah, Mate; that's a good video discussing LaBrie's voice.
"I want a bass solo."
Well, little does she know that there's a bass solo in a song called Metropolis, where he does a bass solo...
I saw DT at Download Festival 2019. James was absolutely amazing
@@fmbar00 sadly, it’s because he’s using overdubs now ☹️
@@petew-berg7791 Yeah? You been to a live show recently? Cause I have, and I can confirm he certainly is not using overdubs.
Beth- I want a bass solo. I hope I get one.
Me- Will you marry me?
Fair question.
I wanted to post the same thing when I heard that! xD
If you want a bass solo, there's a song called Metropolis where the bass player does... well, a bass solo...
The guitar solo is also sick... I mean it basically runs you over and once you really recognize what's happening to you it's already gone...
The instrumental section of Metropolis is just masterful. It becomes increasingly chaotic and mad and whatever keyboard effect the keyboard player (whoever was before Rudess) is perfect. Love it.
He does a bass solo... In a bass solo. Absolute madman
I understood that reference
I see what you did there
Stargazer by Rainbow. Pleaseeeee
Ironically, also covered by Dream Theater quite well 😂
Yep.
I think she said on her live stream that she's doing it
Stargazer by Dream Theater is also great =)
Yassssssss
Your reaction during Petrucci's guitar solo was priceless! Exactly how I'd expect someone to be listening to this the first time.
well, lucky she happened to stumble upon video of DT from 1993, not 2013.
I want to see her react to the download video of pull me under.
@@IntrusiveThot420, when I think of them at their peak, I think of their 3rd album - Awake. The album when Petrucci 1st got himself a 7-string guitar.
You took me by surprise Beth. DT is one of my favorite bands ever! So glad to see it on your channel. Mainly because LaBrie's vocal has always been criticized.
I for one, love the feeling he gives to the songs, but the music is what makes Dream Theater great.
LaBrie is very underrated. He is in a bad spot because he is in a band of great musicians whose songs rely so much on instrumentals.
"ThIS is UnDer a Glass Moaawn!"
Such an underrated comment! hahahahaha
I love that little growl at the end when he says "moon"
Hi..please look at king diamond- Abigail. he has a real special voice.
YES!
Agree.
Terrible falsetos :c
Someone needs to react to King Diamond, but I don't know why everyone recommends Abigail. Mercyful Fate and KD both have better songs, though I'd struggle to pick a favorite.
i like "Sleepless Nights"
Guys! Check out my most recent #DrumCover of Under A Glass Moon 👉 ua-cam.com/video/FY-WiLf9sjQ/v-deo.html - Any Feedback is always welcome and appreciated 👍
#DreamTheater #MikePortnoy #UnderAGlassMoon
I love seeing people's first reactions to Dream Theater... and yes @MikePortnoy Drums are unreal!
I love it when a new metal head gets their dark wings. Especially when they are as happy about it as this! 😂
Diagonal 4 string whole step chromatics. Yay for this...🤣
I know you appreciate good musicianship, but if you're going to do more Dream Theater, expect lots more bits with no singing. This instrumental break's actually pretty short by their standards... :3
I didn’t know they did songs under 16 minutes
@@conormurphy4328 😂😂😂
@@conormurphy4328 lol
@@conormurphy4328 try 20mins. Their longest is 42.
@@brent3522 Holy Batsack Nutman, a 42 minute song!
Agreed! Count of Tuscany is one of my all time favorites!
Beautiful song!
agreed!!!
The Count of Tuscany is the greatest song in the world and you cannot change my mind!
The whole CD this came off of, Images And Words, is amazing.
@brian: it’s my favorite of their’s by far. Lots of other good albums, too!
One of the all-time greatest. The sound they achieved on Images and Words will never be replicated, it's so unique. Metropolis, Under a Glass Moon, and Learning to Live in particular sound like nothing else.
3:45 - The moment when Beth realizes this is not just going to be a regular metal song...
Wow. LaBrie at his peak was such a monster.
First time I heard DT I was like no way they can be this good.
(Sorry for this sidetrack, but I really needed to say this.)
you should listen to a band called Symphony X. Because the singer Russell Allen is a beast.
Star One live, he plain kills it.
I wish Russel would go to DT. I’ve never been big into Labrie’s style
Yes!!!
Jeremy Tassin old school Russell before he smoked all those cigarettes although Charon sounds pretty good
@@isaiahmumaw Coming from both a DT and SX fan I don't think it would work.
A buddy of mine dragged me to a dream theater concert- I was blown away by how awesome they are at their craft.
Beth. Without a doubt the best I've seen doing these sorts of lessons. You always make it about the technique, the music and not about you. I watched every video. Fantastic job. Thank
you.
So glad someone finally reacted to this song! Excellent analysis :)
John Petrucci's solo is one of the best.
It truly is. Extremely creative and highly musical
I was lucky enough to see them quite a few times during the Images and Words tour. And SO many times since. Musical geniuses...all of them. Also...my favorite Petrucci solo. It has SO much style.
I love Dream Theatre's early albums.
Seen them live on 6 consecutive tours. Absolutely my favourite band during the 90s and yearly 2000s.
That's the same reaction I think people have to Megadeth. I remember my roommate used to hate them, but after awhile he got it.
that is true, but another factor is that hes in a band with john myung, john petrucci, jordan rudess and mike/mike (also known as god, god, god, god and god). i cant think of anyone who wouldnt pale at least a bit next to those performers
Or King Diamond. Now HE'S an acquired taste. Andy LaRoque keeps you listening, and eventually you actually start to appreciate what he's doing with his ridiculous falsetto is very complex and original
@@ontologicallyaxiomatic Good point. James is a really great singer, but the other 4 are virtuosos.
She should react to the Octarvarium section, Intervals
Just thinking about the scream on Octavarium on Score stands my hair on end!
Try react six degrees of inner turbulence 😅😅😅
One thing that no one notices is that these are the reasons why James lost his voice...
James mentionned shrimp intoxication but yeah, it's obvious his tone had something to do with if you ask me lol
Not to mention the insane touring schedule they had year after year.
He blew out his vocal cords in Cuba and ignored doctors telling him to rest for a while.
No you're absolutely wrong
@@ooo_Kim_Chi_ooo yes, that's it. And he still regret it
It's always fun to watch someone new to Dream Theater listen to them for the first time.
React to blind guardian- mirror mirror live
(I recommend the one with 1.9 million views over the official, but both are good)
Please!!! Hansi is a great singer.
HOLY SHIT WHAT A GOOD IDEA!!!!!!!!!
Blind Guardian _The Eldar_ is even better for vocal diaplay
@@revylokesh1783 Yes! Such a great song. But have Guardian ever performed it live-and is there a recording of that?

"Was" legendary
you don't even know who to get impressed with first when it comes to Dream Theater. ridiculously talented bunch and an insane band
I love how at first she seems a bit skeptical about it being metal and stuff, but by the end she's totally gushing over all of them. They truly are an amazing band
Hah! Awesome! Didn't expect a Dream Theater reaction, good stuff!
QUEENSRYCHE - Take Hold Of The Flame... Live at Tokyo... Get your ears blown...
Lol. Listened on your recommendation. Lame compared to this when it comes to jaw dropping musician-ship.
Take Hold of the Flame!!
Queensryche - Roads to Madness.
I hope one day Beth reacts to pantera - cemetery gates. The high notes at the end would blow her mind I think.
But I don't remember him ever hitting them live, just screams it.
They’re amazing musicians and people too.
One of the things I like about your reactions is how much your face just lights up when you hear something that impresses you.
OMG!!!! Dream Theater and one of their best songs, at least for me. THANK you yo much for doing this. Love this band, love this song, love you, love everything :D Thank you.
It's basically an all star band, with one of the greatest drummers on earth. When he left, he was replaced with one of the best drummers in the world. Lol. You have to be, to play these songs.
Hey Beth, maybe you could get in contact with a fellow vocalist by the name of Mary Z over at Voicehacks, she screams and is also an amazing singer. She maybe able to help you understand the technique of extreme vocals 😏
The first time I heard of Dream Theater was also the first time I saw them live. What a show! It felt like I was seeing Rush and Black Sabbath with Dio combined in a perfect blend. Very technical and well produced, just awesome.
Thank you very much! I'm sooo happy. The guitar solo is full of emotions.
This was fantastic. I literally cried tears of joy watching you hear them (at one of their best shows ever) for the first time. Great video!
You know that deep in your heart theres a metalhead hiding right?
how could a music lover with a taste for melody not be enchanted by the evolved version of classical music? :)
Rebecca Hope Not really evolved
This must be prog metal day: Beth reacting to Dream Theater and Rebecca Vocal Athlete reacting to Queensryche. I think Rebecca got the better end of the deal as far as vocals are concerned!
I got emotional when I heard you say, "WOW." I love Dream Theatre. All respect to you you are so very beautiful.
I've never heard this band before. They're rather brilliant.
Thanks for making this video.
Really! Someone suggested DT and James Labrie!
When LaBrie watched this many years later to do a commentary track, he insisted many times:
“thank god I don’t do that anymore.”
Because he cant!!
@@bsmallwood1 Awesome insight, yeah I know the whole food poisoning incident really fd him over it would be interesting to see him revisit techniques if he properly practiced them
