Dream Theater isn't your typical metal band. Their instrumentalists are all virtuosos who attended some of the top music schools in the country. Their current keyboardist in particular was a classical piano prodigy who got accepted to one of the top music schools in the country (Juilliard) at age 9! The album that for the song you listened to is one of their best. While many enjoy this song, there's a couple others on the album which are better. 1) Pull Me Under was their first song to chart and remains a favorite among many as it's an easier introduction to their progressive musical elements 2) Metropolis P1 is probably the most technical piece on the album and a great listen if you can handle how progressive it is. 3) Learning to Live is perhaps the most complete song on the album and really shows off the vocal range of the lead singer on both the low end and the high end. This band can be a rabbit hole with tons of music to listen to as they've released 15 albums and an EP which contains one of their all time best songs (A Change of Seasons).
Hands down my favorite band of all time. An inspiration in many ways and an endless supply of talent providing so much in the way of music to appreciate. Honestly never get tired of listening to them and have been a fan since Pull Me Under dropped in the late 80s.
Dream Theater have a wide range of songs from epic tracks to mellow ballads... Here are some suggestions: Standard songs - 'Pull me under' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'Constant motion' ... 'You not me' Ballads - 'Wither' ... 'Another day' ... 'The spirit carries on' ... 'Along for the ride' Epic tracks - 'Trial of Tears' ... 'The glass prison' ... 'A view from the top of the world' ... 'A nightmare to remember'
Dream Theater call themselves progressive metal... They wanted their music to fuse all their influences from Led Zeppelin and Metallica, to Genesis and Rush... The Beatles to Frank Zappa... and Mozart to Deep Purple... Rush and Yes were the band's 2 primary influences. Dream Theater are also a stellar live band and never play the same set of songs from 1 tour to another. Current line-up is: James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Mike Mangini (drums) The band first formed as Majesty in 1985 when John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) attended Berklee College of Music in the East Coast and met Mike Portnoy (drums) and were the only students into hard rock and heavy metal, as well as prog music. Kevin Moore (keyboards) joined (he attended another college) and Chris Collins (vocals) was their original singer and did their first demos. Majesty was signed in 1988 and already had a new batch of songs and a new singer Charlie Dominici (vocals)... They recorded their debut album, but had to change the name - Portnoy's father in California suggested the name Dream Theater after a movie house where he lived. Dream Theater's debut album 'When dream and day unite' was released in 1989... the band kept their Majesty logo shaped like an 'M' on the album cover(s)... However, the album was not promoted and Dream Theater did not tour, playing only select area shows. They decided to part ways w/ Charlie Dominici in 1990 and work on new music without a singer... In 1991, they finally hired Canadian singer James LaBrie (vocals) and their demos were so promising that they were signed to a new label and released their 2nd album 'Images and words' in 1992 and began touring for the first time... The single 'Pull me under' ...became a radio hit, then got MTV airplay... and Dream Theater quickly rose as the album sold gold in the US (half million copies) and was a commercial success in Europe and Asia by 1993. The band recorded the 3rd album 'Awake' in 1994, but keyboardist Kevin Moore quit the band before the release... Derek Sherinian (keyboards) did the tour and joined full time... They recorded an EP 'A change of seasons' in 1995 w/ a 20+ minute epic track. By 1996, the 90's grunge/ alternative era had diminished their popularity and their label kept them in limbo... They were finally able to record a 4th album 'Falling into infinity' in '97, but sales had gone down and drummer Mike Portnoy felt that the band had compromised their music to appease the record label... Portnoy stayed in Dream Theater under the condition that the music would be solely directed by the band and Jordan Rudess (keyboards) would replace Sherinian. Jordan Rudess was a graduate of Julliard and a musical genius... His contributions were invaluable on the 1999 concept album 'Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory'... The band revisited a track 'Metropolis Pt.1' on 'Images and words' and decided to make a full album based on the 1 song... They performed the entire album in concert and released a concert video (and CD) 'Live Scenes from New York' in 2001. Dream Theater grew heavier and bolder w/ subsequent albums "Six degrees of inner turbulence" (2002), Train of Thought (2003), and 'Octavarium' (2005) as they celebrated 20 years as a band w/ a live album 'Score' (performed w/ a full orchestra). Dream Theater's popularity was exponentially increasing w/ 2 more albums 'Systematic Chaos' (2007) and 'Balck clouds and silver linings' (2009)... But in 2010, founding drummer Mike Portnoy announced he was leaving Dream Theater to focus on other musical projects. In 2011, Dream Theater posted their auditions for a new drummer online and announced that Mike Mangini (drums) had joined the band - coincidentally, he was a teacher at Berklee where the band had formed in 1985. 'A dramatic turn of events' (2011) was the first album to feature Mike Mangini on drums... followed by the self-titled 2013 'Dream Theater' album... In 2016, Dream Theater released the orchestral 2 CD concept album 'The Astonishing'... Their last 2 albums were 'Distance over time' (2019) and 'A view from the top of the world' (2021)
They have a few Heavier Songs, Like "As I Am, Systematic Chaos and Dark Eternal Night." This is a Whole Next Level Sound compared to what you usually Listen to. You need to keep doing the Dive with DT. Pull Me Under is another Good one.
Definetely would enjoy seeing you reacti to more Dream Theater. Good news : they got a big discography and 90% of their tracks are great and unique. My favorite band, every member has an insane technical level and almost every song has good surprises and great riffs ! Enjoy the ride ! I suggest : "Home" is a must listen "Glass Prison" or any track from "Train of thought" for heavier stuff any track from "Images and Words" for more melodic stuff
"The stuff that they do with these guitars it's like... It should be illegal, like... G-d damn! That was disgusting, that was nasty.... I Loved It!" LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!! You won my internet today!
U DIDN´T KNOW DT, SERIOUSLY? I´M FROM ARGENTINA. I HEAR DT FOR 25 YEARS. I SAW DT WHEN CAME HERE FOR OCTAVARIUM TOUR. TRY: ILLUMINATION THEORY, BREAKING ALL ILLUSIONS, AND MUCH MORE (SUMONJAMAL). THANKS FOR YOUR REACTION! DT IS PROGRESSIVE ROCK OR PROGRESSIVE METAL, BASICALLY.
Greatest drummer in the world. Portnoy is bad. If you want a truly epic ride with DT do an album review of Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes from a memory. Incredible roller coaster ride 🤘🏼
Personally, I think this song is far superior to “Pull me Under” The supposed “Hit” On this album… Don’t get me wrong, Pull me Under is a great Song, but this one is… Yeah…
It’s a great intro to the band but doesn’t touch their best stuff. I totally understand what you mean though. That song was like crack when I heard it first

Wouldn't Pull Me Under be their only song to chart?
Anything by Dream Theater is beyond epic. Try Metropolis part one and Learning to Live next. Thank you!
This album was a game changer

Your facial expressions and grooving to the song brought me back to when I first heard this album. It’s a certified classic.
More Dream Theater is a good thing, no matter who you are.
One of the greatest guitar solos up there with Tornado of Souls as every guitar players favorite.
Try Home by them. It's a fusion of metal and oriental stuff
Please not yet though lol, the moaning section will trip him out lmao
Home is their best song, love it.
I appreciate the fact you let the song play through without interruption. Best DT review for that very reason. Subscribed and liked! 7:29

The Count Of Tuscany belongs on the epic rating IMO, it just hits so right
Their playing is so amazing, that he could've been singing about jock itch and it wouldn't matter. The singer does stand out on "Pull Me Under."
THE best DT album and line up to date is this album! Moore, Myung, Portnoy, Petrucci, LaBrie...
Amazing band. Probably my favorite of all time. Pretty good stuff. Don’t have much to recommend. Their song “Scarred” is very good.
This is one of the few albums I've listened to back to back through twice in first sitting. A great band, a great album.
Great band!! This album is my favorite! Awake is also an amazing album! They're still making cool stuff!!
you picked an awesome song to start your DT journey with
He took the rough intrance to his rabbit hole of symphonic hardrock 😅
Love DT - been a fan for 30 years!

Mike Mangini out
Mike Portnoy in
A classic! One of THE greatest guitar solos, EVER. Great job brother. Subscribing! Do more DT!🙏🏻🤙🏻
Still one of my favorite solos of all time. Of Johns' few in LTE also.
Take the time, Under a Glass Moon and Learning to live really blew my mind the first time I heard those magical tracks in 1998... and still does!
They change their time signature so many times it’s insane

Illumination Theory period
7:29 lmao 🤣 💀
Do more of this, you got the vibe mate!
My favorite song off the album.
This kind of music is above most average
music listeners…
Some may call it wankery,
I call it utter greatness 😎
Fan since ’89.
This album is phenomenal, so glad you're digging on it !!!
Glass Prison 👍
This entire cd is off the chain
I love, “what the fuck that should be illegal”
I just watched you again, and your the Bestis, ever, and I watch a lot of vids.
I have been brought by the algorithm to say, Dream Theater and this album especially are great.
Tip of the Day: anytime you react to dream theater watch the live version. Especially anything from the 80s up to the mid 2000s
the best band :D
"The stuff that they do with these guitars it's like... It should be illegal, like... G-d damn! That was disgusting, that was nasty.... I Loved It!" LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!! You won my internet today!
When viewing Dream theater make sure it's always the Live version
Ty so much for not chopping up the video by stopping every 30 seconds. And welcome to the rabbit hole.
Love these guys try out barstool warrior such a tight band!
U DIDN´T KNOW DT, SERIOUSLY? I´M FROM ARGENTINA. I HEAR DT FOR 25 YEARS. I SAW DT WHEN CAME HERE FOR OCTAVARIUM TOUR.

DT IS PROGRESSIVE ROCK OR PROGRESSIVE METAL, BASICALLY.
James, the vocalist wrote this song about the night he proposed to his wife!
You must be thinking of another song. The lyrics of this song were written by Petrucci after he saw rain falling across the moon when it was full.
To me progressive music is a band with precision instrumentation. Bands like Dream Theater, Yes and Kansas are to name a few.
Best band ever
This is Progressive Metal. Other Bands Like this would Be Rush and Tool.
You should reqact to their live stuff. they sound exactly the same but now you get to see them actually play.
Subbed ;)
Thanks for the subb
Not the style music I gravitate towards, but still, I can appreciate amazing musicianship that was really actually very, very good
Bass?? You want some funky groovin bass? Listen to Octavarium next by Dream Theater - prolly my fav song 🎧 🔥🔥
Dream Theater “In the name of God”
This is what is known as progressive metal.
I see where dragon force got their influence from.
My favorite band jump right into Hoe ext pretty sure you’ll like it.
❤
❤️🔥
This one of their easier songs. DT kings of prog... Ok I said it.
Greatest drummer in the world. Portnoy is bad. If you want a truly epic ride with DT do an album review of Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes from a memory. Incredible roller coaster ride 🤘🏼
Live Versions better for Reaktion
Yeah that drum track is REAL, not some AI stuff. Drums come the heart and not some BS made up shizznit. Glad to see PORT back
Triggered drums
This is on my car playlist, it's not helping.
Personally, I think this song is far superior to
“Pull me Under”
The supposed “Hit”
On this album…
Don’t get me wrong,
Pull me Under is a great
Song, but this one is…
Yeah…
pull me under is defitnetly one of there best.
Definietly not.
It’s a great intro to the band but doesn’t touch their best stuff. I totally understand what you mean though. That song was like crack when I heard it first
No way
Wtf
My Son loves them , but I think they're too technical and the singer is not as good as he should be
he's old and had a major vocal injury 💀
Amazing how music is the only art form where "technicality" isn't appreciated.
GREAT ALBUM
Do Pull Me Under. Drummer still around currently in awesome group The Winery Dogs. Check them out!✌
He's back in DT
