I have a lot easier time decluttering physical things than digital. The few times I motivate myself and declutter digital stuff, there's like another folder waiting the next day and the previous decluttered folder needs doing again. It never ends.
a computer runs faster when there is less data on there as when you open any file, it does not have to search through the other data to find it. most ppl. also have useless junk photos in the thousands or old files that are of no use like a college essay they wrote.
What I did last year which was much easier was start backward. I started with 30 items at the beginning of the month and was down to one at the end bc it was easier after getting rid of so much to be get rid of just a couple more things
That sounds a lot less stressful than only getting rid of one thing when you have SO much to get rid while dreading having to come up with so many things later in the month. I mean, I get the idea behind starting small, but I definitely like your idea better.
Fun fact! I used to work at bed bath & beyond in the wedding registry department and one of the first things I learned in training was that bone china is actually extremely durable and strong... Before bridal appointments, managers would encourage us to stand on the teacups and saucers in front of customers to demonstrate how crack resistant our bone china products were lol (just thought I would throw that in when you mentioned being scared to break your bone china teacup/saucer)
Living with someone else actually makes it harder, you can’t just declutter their stuff. We have some things that drive me crazy because it’s useless, but my husband wants to keep it 🙄 Living in your own you can throw things out if you don’t like it without discussing about it
That's so true! In the past when I try to help people declutter and they don't want to get rid of things (for example, my mum can sometimes be like this), it usually takes a few rounds of decluttering to get them to let go of stuff. and it helps to really discuss with them why they think they need it without putting too much pressure on the fact that you think it should be gotten rid of. But ofcourse at the end of the day we have to respect the wants of our roommates/families/partners. Good luck with your decluttering!
We are seniors so we have two garage sales a year. I sift the house constantly and saleable items are stored. I donate once a week to the homeless and food bank to keep current.
Life hack: The minimalist challenge is easier in February because a) it's the shortest month of the year and b) it's not too long after Christmas so you might have some unwanted presents that you might want to get ride of/ donate. Love this video. I can't wait to do the challenge.
The Minimalists! Listen to their podcast while decluttering! I find having them talking while I’m cleaning is so inspirational. Helps to stay on track while taking on a huge project
This was phenomenal! I did the opposite, 1 per day. But each family member participated as well. It was so rewarding to see what we didn't really reach for and be able to share that with someone else! And the best part of it all was that we don't spend all of our time looking for lost items because they now have a home! Great video! Love your energy!
When you talked abour getting rid of or donating the jewelry sorter that reminded me of Don Aslett in his book " Clutters Last Stand" talks about decluttering and also getting rid of what is called "junk bunkers" the clutter container, boxes etc. Loved your video.
Its unfortunate that most of us deal with our stress in unhealthy ways. Some shop too much, some eat too much, some do both.....like me.😥 Of course there are others that do much more harm to themselves than this. At least if we recognize it we can get help and correct it our vices.
Same. Eat too much. Shop too much. No intention of stopping. *shrug* I prefer to think of it as a challenge for balance. Shop more, declutter more. Eat more, workout more. "Balance." "Harmony." I'm great with excuses. :]
Mark yes please. Do you want to bring me one. I was making a joke. I’m actually the perfect weight and so what if I wasn’t? Are you a mean person in general or just online in the security of your own home?
Interesting approach. I liked most of what you did. My only exception is that I do buy packs of pens at Office Depot and don't mind having back up pens. I don't want to have to run to the store when one runs dry. :-)
That's where fountain pens really save the day (and the planet too) - you can tell when you need ink and just refill it over and over. And if you like to have different colors you can just have a couple different bottles of ink. They write much better (oh, the joys of REAL ink!) and it saves tons of waste plastic. Cheaper in the long run too. I'll never go back to using ballpoint pens. I'd encourage everyone to try it - you've never really written until you've written with a fountain pen. It'll improve your handwriting and it's so much more fun :)
@@monyscell8352 My daughter journals faithfully and is a fountain pen and fine ink connoisseur. But I would not want to use fountain pens when I am grading stacks and stacks of papers and recording grades in a gradebook. Thus, I buy packs of pens at Office Depot.
Ugh on fast fashion. I remember growing up my mom and I would sort through my clothes and the winter - or summer - clothes were packed up and put away. I think a lot of people would have a lot of room in their closets if they did that.
Bone china is sturdier than stoneware, btw. It's a common misconception that it is more delicate. In fact, when I purged, I got rid of all of my other dishes and kept only my good china. I have no choice but to use it every day. I put it in the dishwasher too. No issues.
love this video :) I have been decluttering for a while now but since I dont have the time to do it everyday, once a week or so I go back to the same places and continue to declutter what I don't see necessary anymore. Sometimes I keep stuff and come back a week later and I'm like wait no lol I dont need this!
Inspiring. I’m going to clear out some things right now. We put a 33 gallon trash can in our garage. Every day we will look at an area in our home and see what can be released. Then donate the good stuff that is weighing us down. Thank you. 😀
Well done, Kayla. Everyone's situation is going to be different, depending on household sizes. And since yours was small, you supplemented with the electronic purge. Nice work.
I purge things at least three times a year. I find jewellery the hardest! Last year I got rid of most of it and I realized how little I wear. Now I can invest in pieces I will love for a long time.
I did that minimalist challenge is on my channel and that was only start of the full minimalist decluttering I did after. This is amazing start. I loved that challenge
I am so going to do this staring in November. It'll be a no-buy, no-need November! Christmas present shopping doesn't count but I want buy anything for me. Mission declutter is on! Thanks for the inspiration!
The minimalism game you're doing began with "The Minimalists", the guys who Matt D'Avella directed in the documentary Minimalism. Great job digging for more stuff.
Me: oh that’s awesome that you realize you don’t need a bone china tea cup and saucer. Also me: But it’s sooo Sooo beautiful! Are you sure?? And that my friends is why I’m decluttering.. . again.
I am attempting this this year. I just have to try not to get discouraged if I slip a little. Like most of us tend to be, I am too hard on myself at times. I have a chore chart for one chore a day for 30 days in January - hopefully the 31st will be my reward day. It's the 4th, and I am on schedule so far. I had a total of 21 items from the areas I worked on so far - literal junk like a broken spoon - a cracked serving spoon - and expired bottles of medicine. I tossed them all at once - trying to break my hoarding and procrastination. So I am good up until tomorrow with the declutter "game" . I am actually looking forward to finding 6 things for Monday
As it got closer to the end of the month naturally it got harder to find items in the larger numbers. I did continue through though even if I didn't quite reach the goal number. I figured keeping up the good habit was still worth doing. Thank you for asking 😀
Unawkward I’m there rn. I’ve decluttered a lot but feel very guilty about getting rid of it. Either I’ve spent my money or someone else has spent money. And although I donate a lot of it i still feel bad :(
Does anyone ask where all this stuff will go? I mean if we're just dumping it in the landfill that seems kind of wrong, no? This whole downsizing of stuff is super trendy, so hmmm.....just a thought. I'm thinking of what the heck to do with stuff I'm setting free. When I do a clean up of my living space, I'm reminded that there's a bit too much stuff in the world being over produced by humans. Like, where does it all go eventually? All this stuff isn't sustainable. I'm so aware now. Think about all of the people dotting the planet that are *not* aware nor care about where all this stuff will go? We kind of don't need to create more landfill stuff. Uh, no. For some people it is an extreme habit, but for me it isn't and I certainly didn't encourage the extremism side of minimalism. Keep what you want. Find new homes for what you don't want. Whatever. How bout a trip to the hairdresser for a nice trim. Then stop flapping your hair around. SOOO DISTRACTING. Stop saying 'like' when it isn't needed. 😲
Kayla Kempers this is the first video I’ve seen of yours but I thought your hair was beautiful! I have long blond hair as well and I enjoy it. Plus little things like playing with your hair are habits and mindless actions that aren’t easy to just stop doing. Also, for me personally, I’m awkward in front of cameras and tend to do certain quirks when I am being recorded. So yeah, sure you flicked your hair back a lot but I didn’t find it bad or distracting. And yes, nowadays so many people put excessive “like”s in our sentences-I do it constantly-but because of how most of our society is in the habit of doing it, I don’t think it’s proper to be judged for it. Man, reading through comments shows just how critical the internet is....keep doing what you are Kayla💕👍

Keep what you want. Find new homes for what you don't want. Whatever. How bout a trip to the hairdresser for a nice trim. Then stop flapping your hair around. SOOO DISTRACTING. Stop saying 'like' when it isn't needed. 😲
you really just came here to spread some negativity huh... interesting
Very rude & so unnecessary.
That comment was like so unnecessary
I didn't find her distracting at all! Thanks for a great video.
