With Camp NaNoWriMo right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share a bunch of strategies that I've found to help me when I'm feeling creatively blocked. Some of these are kinda odd and will probably not work for everything, but I think a lot of them are really fun ways to make writing more fun when you're struggling with it. I hope some of them help you :) ✨My poetry collection! a....

last vlog from holland! I've started using Scrivener again (and honestly it is doing wonders for my organization) and I've now finished creating an updated outline for this draft. I also started some new books, including Powerless by Lauren Roberts and Howl's Moving Castle. It's exciting to be getting back into reading like I used to. I've been working through Between the Waves here and there, and also doing a lot of internal mindset work which has been so necessary. It's so easy to get sucked into the pressure of writing for the sake of successful publishing, which I discuss a lot in this vlog. There's also just a lot of life clips and little moments in this one, so I hope you enjoy a vlog that is slightly chaotic and roman...

Did you send the whole draft or parts of it? Where did you get your beta readers responses from?
I love your channel! I was wondering if you were going to make videos for NaNoWriMo this year? Much love <3
hello! I don't think I will, I put too much pressure on myself during NaNoWriMo and since I'm already pretty burnt out, I'm going to avoid it this year so I don't make it worse 💖 I have previous vlogs from NaNoWriMo though! :)
Thank you for this video! ❤
And speaking of critique partners. I’m torn about them. Finding one you can trust is tough, but I like the idea. So far, and other than my few betas, the only real good feedback I got was from the editor I hired on Reedsy. Just hired a proofer and I’m excited to see her perspective. I gave her specific instruction to judge my female characters.
I segregate my characters into their own individual playgrounds by giving each a word doc for themselves (my writing poison of choice). When I run out of steam on one, I jump into another. If I’m totally dead to the world, I know I need a creativity break. A day or two works well. Standing in the shower and even reading other books, usually get the juices flowing, giving me ideas that make me giddy. Following those characters around is an absolute blast. And speaking of flow, I love flow. That mindset where everything clicks, and where my paltry 100 wpm typing speeds isn’t fast enough to keep up. Where after three, four, or five hours, with 2, 3 or 4000 words flying by, my hands are as tired as my brain. The curse, when the physical and the mental can’t keep up with the want.
Ahhh. A fellow pantser. I so wish it could finish a book at 100K words.
Miss you Kayla 🥺
I could get lost in the way you smile. It’s enchanting and absolutely captivating! 🌟😍
It's been a while since your last upload so it's time for some more rewatching. I swear you were in my dream last night talking about Between the Waves. I wish I could tell you what exactly happened and if I was reading it or watching a video. I hope you are doing well, taking care of yourself, and find something that excites you every day.
💛💛
Sensitivity readers, when I stopped watching.
I hit 50k words for my first novel! :D
this is so good congratulations!! 😍😍
Making a map of my world has been challenging. I’ve found that hand drawing has honestly been the most effective method for me
Did you have to book the specific time for the palace to get ticket or is it possible jst to come and buy ticket on the spot?
Oooo this is really helpful. Great video! :)
I really love your writing vlogs
I love these tips, especially about adding a cute animal! And I love the reading tip, too! I LOVE reading and I read 89 books last year and this year I’m barely at 25 (yes, I include beta and sensitivity reads). I also agree with taking a break. I have 6 drafts of the fantasy novel I started querying and I took a 7 month break between drafts 3 and 4. It helped SO much! Thanks for these great tips! 💜🥰
Great video ❤ where are you from
The more authors I follow, the more I hear about their 'debut' novel being in fact, the 3rd, 4th or even 5th finished manuscripts they have written. The word debut can be misleading for that reason.
@@sophielafleche3803 I believe debut just refers to their first published novel. Most authors aren’t publishing their very first ever manuscript. It just means it’s their books debut to the world :)
@@KaylaKempers exactly - but many ppl don't realize that.
My favorite writing says are the ones when I basically word vomit and just write down whatever comes to mind haha.
YES ❤😅😊 my office is also my happy place... which is my bed 🛏️
So true! I needed to see this right now because that's how I feel with my current 1st draft.
If it were me, then I would just make a picture of everything. A map of the town/city/village/country Lots of pictures of the locations Character sketches and color palettes Lots of pictures of specific scenes Simplified way of drawing everything for a graphic novel
does anyone have a link to the discord pls 😭 i’m not seeing it on the patron and i would LOVE to join!
You have to join as a free member and then it’s the first post.
These are great! I am definitely going to jot these down to have on hand! Thank you for sharing!
I do have a portal fantasy where the characters are transported into a futuristic earth where humans have died off, magic has returned along with mythical creatures, and most of the world is flooded, leaving few land masses. I've been using flood map predictors to create that map.
That sounds like such a cool way to make a map. I've tossed polyhedral dice on paper where each die represents something else (D4 = mountains, D20 = capital, etc) but nothing like you're talking about where you based climate and such off real places. That's too cool.
This wasn't a vlog this was a video diary. That's cool and all but once you put web developer or anything tech related there's going to be some expectations to show your workflow and tech stack and use cases of the type of problem you are solving mixed with coffee or cacao whatever floats your boat and then unwind
And this, friends, is why I'm writing a contemporary sports romance right now. 😆
This is SO FAIR 😂
@@KaylaKempers 😅
For my last map, i used a hexagonal grid and made shapes that I liked, cut and pasted them together on a larger sheet then made a cleaner version. Still tough but easier. I like closely you are using our world to inside your realms. You might want to look at scifi games that might have portals/time warps for their maps. I'm working on 2 projects a contemporary novella that is almost done, and a fantasy novel that is always in the planning stages.
Oooo this would be fun actually, I’ll look into games with portal maps!
map making is unnecessarily difficult 😅 so i feel you on that front!! i am also writing a portal fantasy with duel pov with magic and royalty!! i'm about 31k in and nowhere near done 😅
Wow! I’m really impressed with how detailed your world-building document is and how you’re diving into BTW Book 2 right after finishing Draft 3 of Book 1! AHHH! I could never! Good luck! 🥰
Thank you so much for this!!! What's the name of your second book? That's such a stunning book cover also! 👏🏾👏🏾
I don't have an official name for it yet but I'm aiming to announce it around when I announce the publishing timeline :)
I LOVE tip #2!!! Never heard it before but it’s so smart and such a good way to get out of your head and also learn from a scene you like. Genius!!!!
It’s genuinely been so helpful! And kinda like doing a mini case study on the writing craft of another book 🙌🏼
#5 is so interesting to me as a linear writer. I'll skip parts but other than a few notes, I don't write scenes out of order. Maybe I should try it.
A great video! I don't know why smell is the one sense I utilize the least, so maybe I need to remember to do that more often.
Thank you for this list, there were more than half I had not considered!
I'm so sad I missed this live but I loved the conversation you guys had! Can't wait to see what you both do next with poetry and otherwise 💛
Miss you Bree! 💛💛
Sarah J. Maas has been out too long for people to not know how to pronounce her last name correctly. I know this video is 2 years old though so maybe you know now? lol
I love seeing how people plan. I'm impressed that you're doing so much so close together. I've never done Nanowrimo/Camp Nanowrimo. I find being put on a hard deadline intimidating, and all my creativity gets zapped out of me....which is going to be rough if I'm ever picked up lol. I look forward to seeing your progress! Saying "I don't make the rules" when you do make the rules is the most relatable thing ever.
I feel like I should mention that this last draft was a VERY tight deadline that I set because I knew I needed it. Moving forward I will absolutely not set another deadline like that unless I'm desperate because it definitely took a lot out of me 😅 I'm hoping for my camp to be fairly chill too 🤞 lots of backstory writing and brainstorm documents will count towards my goal! I have faith in you if you get picked up, it's all just practice and figuring out your process! 💛
A very attractive crazy cat lady ;). And i don´t mean any disrespect with that.
I'm writing a fantasy series and a Detective novel rn. I'm having problems continuing the detect novel bc I want no Filler lol
Just came across your channel. It's always cool to fine people that are nerdy on the inside and beautiful on the outside! Good luck writing!
congratulations! last time I checked in with your videos you hadn't sent the first book to beta readers yet :)
You're doing Camp Nanowrimo? After finishing Book 1 a couple days (read: hours) ago?? 😮At the rate you're going, you'll have multiple books done in 2024 alone! 🙌🏾
haha honestly that would be a dream! At least some rough drafts, but we'll see 😂 I have a habit of working in sprints so I'm sure I'll hit a lull at some point
