self-publishing plans and writing goals for 2025 | author goals & intentions for the new year
Let's discuss my writing goals and publishing plans for 2025 :) My main focus in this new year is "Creation over Consumption", meaning I want to prioritize my creativity and the art that I put out into the world, rather than what I'm consuming. I discuss some life goals that I have as well as plans for my fantasy novel and publishing a book at the end of the summer!

In this video I tackle the challenge of organizing my writing notes, project ideas, and outlining notes, brainstorm new ideas for Draft 4, and do a bit of rereading the previous draft to try and figure out the best way to improve this next one. I also dive into planning the second book in my series and start working on my 2025 indie publishing and writing schedule goals. Basically it's just a b...

I missed you!
Best of luck in your endeavors this year :).
This is so exciting Kayla! The Notion board is so pretty too!
I'm also trying to read 1 book per month. 12 books per year is nothing to sneeze at lol 😅 God, I can't wait for Between The Waves! ❤
@madebymalayka thank you for saying that 🥹💛
Oh really love the format you did this in! I separated my writing goals from life goals, but it's nice to have it all together
I was waiting for this video !! It's so motivating to see what goals you have. I'm an author too, your videos are so great and peaceful :)
I can't wait to see the new plan for your book(s). I thought I'd be publishing by the end of the year but then I wrote one more plus half of one more book in a series so I'm just getting out all the ideas before I dive into that challenge. Happy new year!
Happy New Year! ✨✨
Came for the writing vlogs, stayed for the vibes <3
thank you for being here 🥰
Seeing what you were trying to do in the first place, FOR THE WIN. Almost every project starts for a reason, and I notice every time Between the Waves starts working for you again (based on these vlogs) is when you find vivid awareness of what was motivating you. Your life has been chaotic many times before, and your life will surely get chaotic again, but the most motivated projects are like a boomerang. Fate simply cannot yeet them out of your hands. Happy new year, Kayla.
I love this comment so much 😂 Thank you Adam, Happy New Year! ✨
Hey Kayla, as far as planners go, I use a Common Planner from Sterling Ink, and you choose your layout, and there are 368 undated blank pages if you don't want to write every day. I find it so much more flexible. Love the vlog. ❤ Inspired to write this evening now. 😂
Where's your sweatshirt from?
thrifted! but it's from the Dagoli artist.. there's a lot of them in thrift stores or online but I think they're no longer in production so you kinda have to hunt a bit (but quality is amazing and artwork is beautiful)
@KaylaKempers thanks! It's really cool I'm going to keep an eye out.
well since i am on holiday i have more time to write , i alsways wake up at 11 something am , and sleep around 5 am
I love the Fiction Writing Made Easy podcast!
That neglected drain always gets clogged with so much goop. Nice analogy. Clean out those pipes regularly, folks!
I love the opening shot
Good luck with draft 4! 💛
thank you! :)
finally a fellow writer reads my favourite book about writing... and life ;)
Such a good vlog ❤
I don't know how it happened so quick, but Bird by Bird was ready for me today. I just finished the introduction and absolutely love it. I really enjoy reading about how other writers feel about writing. I love writing so much and wonder if other writers feel the same as I do. I've taken so many notes just from the introduction alone because a lot of what she's saying resonates with me. And I love how she's able to interweave it with her life story. I came back here to say, Thank you for the book rec. I actually just ordered it from amazon too because I want the hard copy so I can underline in it.
@@AdrenaMonic ahhh this is so exciting, I’m glad you’ve already found it so helpful :) ✨
Loved this cozy catchup. 8:18 Love that salad. Are those chickpeas as a topping? Wishing you a happy Xmas, Kayla.
@@AdamFishkin yes! Roasted chickpeas on a lemon tahini salad ✨ merry Christmas! :)
Lemon tahini. (mouth waters)
Thanks for the book recommendation. I just ordered it from my library app, I'm number 6 in line!! I love books on writing. I'm currently reading "Truth Is the Arrow, Mercy Is the Bow" by Steve Almond. It's a DIY manual on the construction of stories, so far I'm learning a lot. I need to learn how to tell a good story lol. Have you ever read "1000 words" by Jami Attenberg? It is very inspiring! Super sweet book for writers.
@@AdrenaMonic I haven’t read it but I’ll see if I can grab it from the library! Thank you :)
I should probably take a SM break too...after all, I have over 350K words to revise (3 books) next year. LOL.
yeah that was kinda my deciding factor; the realization that I have a poetry collection and duology to finish and I could really use those extra hours in a day 😅
@@KaylaKempers I just went through the HB90 system which was very illuminating into my daily work periods vs productivity. I'm hoping that once I'm over the holiday hump (this week) I'll get more focused now that I"m tracking better. 😁 I have big goals and they need time/energy/effort.
That yoga practice looked like HEAVEN 😭❤️
it was a DREAM I would live there if i could
The shorter daylight hours are very affecting. I'm happy to see you're at least spending your retreat in a very festive location with central heating. From the backstory work you've described, it sounds like you've encountered the opposite of tunnel vision. You can't find the tunnel because you're too high up. 10:11 Your sweater is a vibe.
Reading or playing video games ❤
I'm also currently tidying up the plot and character motivations, stilk in my draft II. Feels like an endless slog sometimes 😂 but I'm still aiming to get the draft done by the end of the year.
Always nice to solve the major story problems. I'm not worried about that now because I'm drafting (which means ignoring everything until revision time which is in the far far future...)
Do you watch justinthetrees? He makes lovely content on how he uses trees in food and fun tree facts.
oh dude I LOVE skiing!! that is so fun! 🥹🫶
i've only gone 5 times so far but I am very quickly falling in love with it 😍
My name is Omayya, everytime you say Amaya it's so jarring
I definitely need an author/screenwriter website! I also need a page on the website where I can offer my freelance services (sensitivity reading, manuscript critiques), and a page for my author publications and lectures, so I might reach out to you! I emailed myself the form, so I remember. 🥰 The aesthetics of your videos are so pretty! I wish I knew how to use Adobe Premiere Pro! I’m so excited for BTW and your next poetry book! 😍
Hey Kayla! I’m glad you’re back. I’ll definitely be reaching out in the future! I could use a refresher for my build. Also, I’m re writing the book again (25th/final) draft. Ugh. Sigh. Worldbuilding and Characterization is so tricky for a dark urban fantasy.
woooah 25th draft? That's so impressive. Good luck with it! :)
@@KaylaKempers Thank you! :)
I’m planning to get into nature photography next year and I’m so curious-what camera are you using? (If you don’t mind sharing ofc). The colors look so beautiful and vibrant!
thank you! I have a sony A7iii which is a great lower price option (but still pricey tbh... the body itself is around $2000 CAD brand new) for a professional camera :) I have the kit lens on it still (28-70mm, f3.5-5.6) which has been completely fine but I'd like to upgrade at some point to something with a lower aperture and wider angle. I also have Premiere Pro so a lot of my colour correcting and grading is done in post. Some of my vlogs are just basic colour corrections but some are a bit more of a creative edit. hopefully that's helpful, and good luck with your photography! ✨
@ thank you so much for taking the time to answer! ☺️
Balancing creativity between writing prose and poetry can be a challenge. When I am deep into novel drafting poetry tends to slow WAY down and vice versa. I wouldn't be worried if this happens to you as well. it just means your waves will have different colours when they hid the sore.
You built a website for my book editing business and I’m so happy with how it turned out! Could not recommend you more ❤️
thank you so much Ieva! It was such a fun site to work on ✨✨
Your vlogs are just so soothing 😌
I love Amaya and her love interest so much! You have such a cool concept and I can’t wait to see it all come to fruition when you self-publish! Excited for your journey! It was so much fun to beta read! I adore portal fantasy! 😍 Something that might help you, especially as you get to later drafts and with line editing, is a book called SELF-EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS. It really helped me with some of my later drafts before I started querying. 🥰
Having to sort 2000 pieces of feedback into categories of "action this", "put on hold" and "thank you for the compliment" strikes me as a good problem to have. I wish you a large amount of productivity over the next week or two, Kayla.
How did you find beta readers? I’m struggling with finding someone I can trust.
Love your vlog!! It’s really inspiring me to write 😊 what notebook do you use? I like how it lays flat and how big the pages are!
it's just a notebook I got from Chapters :) I think they cycle their stock though so I'm not sure if it would be there still!
I'm just looking for strategies that'll help me in revisions 😂 I'm finishing the first draft of my third in a series and then I have to go back and edit the 500K+ words. 👀 I would also maybe suggest looking at commonalities in the comments. If there's a one-off, it's likely personal preference/style and maybe less relevant overall. You can't please everyone. And it was Meredith E. Phillips who did it but I loved it so I'm gonna try it. Soooo, looking at your task list reminds me how lucky I am that I'm writing contemporary fiction 😂 Also, "that's it" <--- famous last words...
Rewriting definitely takes a lot of time (as I’m learning). Good luck on your writing journey!
Another UA-camr I watch had a great idea to basically triage the comments - good stuff (no fix), quick stuff (to fix), complex stuff (big fix). Make a second doc and eliminate all the good stuff. Helps get feedback volume down. I'd say you're in a good position for revisions with all the feedback! Good luck working through it all. 😄
this is such a good idea, thank you!! :)
Loved the small glimpse of that yoga studio! Is it somewhere within a forest? I would also say, don't put the number of the beta comments you got in front of you as you go through them, you will get overwhelmed, take it one step at a time. When I see reminders of how much I have left to do, especially in the form of numbers, I know that I feel more pressured and I could tell as you stared at the figure that it was getting to you, just a little. Just focus on the actual words in the feedback and hopefully, slowly but surely you will get through it ❤
yeah I thought putting them all together would be a good idea but then I saw the total and I was definitely second guessing that decision 😂I'm about halfway through at least but yeah next time I'll just keep them separate I think
You seem like you had a very relaxing Sunday! I love essential oils! I have plenty of book recommendations if you need them! 😍 That’s a lot of beta comments! I always love fan flailing in beta reader documents over what I enjoyed because I want the author to know! I’m excited to see where your next draft takes you! 🥰
yes I've been loving the comments around all the things people have enjoyed, especially the romance stuff 😂
I love this! I think your goals are very doable and reasonable! I hope you can get your poetry collection stocked! That would be so cool! 😍 You’ve really upped the aesthetics of your vlogs! Very beautiful! Good luck getting through your beta reader feedback for BTW! 💜
I love your vlogs so much Kayla, have always found them so comforting. it is so inspiring to see you so in touch with nature & making your own face oil! I want to make more of my own homemade tinctures as well. as someone who practices aromatherapy, I do recommend grabbing a gram scale and looking up safe ratios for carrier oils to essential oils - or grabbing a natural remedies recipe book (I got one at a secondhand bookshop once!) essential oils are AMAZING but so important to use safely because they can definitely do damage. and always test on your wrist before your face!
ooo that's a good idea, I should definitely pick up a scale because I put too much eucalyptus and then I had to top it off with a bunch of other oil 😅😅
@ it’s a learning process & I highly admire that you are trying & testing it out, it’s always a beautiful thing to make things & reduce consumption. when I do buy face oil it’s often from a small business friend of mine & the quality is much higher than anything I’ve bought in stores or made myself, but not always economical for everyone.
