The only problem I have with this set is the price.
I know Lego uses smaller pieces for details but this just doesn't look like 160$ set.
I think 120$ (at max) would be more reasonable

No poncho and BD-1 is the most tragic part to me honestly.

Looks good but just needs to be bigger

  • @stijnd5268

the original one was 65cm long, this one 46cm. I feel that for playsets lego should take a small step back detail wise (as much as I love high detailed models) to just to give those pieces to making it bigger as that is what kids enjoy the most.

  • @Zhypherrr

No BD-1 is alright to me (though I would love more) but no poncho is a big miss, they gave Saw an exclusive cloth piece so why not go all out for Cal too?
Other than that the SD looks really good for the level of detail they packed in for the size, and the off proportions aren’t all too bad considering it’s a play set. Although I wonder if they would add one to the 18+ starship collection at some point, being one of the most popular ships I can’t imagine it’d take long. Then maybe we’d look at this one a bit differently.

I do agree with the size thing, HOWEVER it's very much in line with smaller scale, but more detail like the x-wing, tie, slave-1, etc..

I don't mind the small size, given that I lack the space to store larger sets in places my cat won't knock them over. Would love a providence/invisible hand in this scale; hopefully the midi scale providence currently out sells well enough for Lego to consider a playscale version of the invisible hand. Would even pair nicely with a reboot of the venator playset. I think maybe the reason they went smaller is because star destroyers have an issue with stability given their shape, and smaller sizes are more structurally sound for swooshing around and bumping into things. Just looking at the set, it seems incredibly structurally sound, likely taking notes from the imperial light cruiser set around the same size.
Ironically, the best figures in the set is everything other than cal. All the imperials look excellent, especially the officers and Lego has always done a good job with Vader, but Cal without a Poncho is questionable. If I really want one, I'll probably just get 2 fabric capes to put front and back.
I like it. Solid looking set, not the most mind-blowing thing they've ever done, but I hardly think it's gonna be a regrettable purchase.

Given what I want from a lego Star Destroyer, to look good first and foremost, I have kinda high hopes for this one. Aside from the noticeably wrong/caricatured proportions... it really looks good on those pictures! It doesn't look gappy, doesn't show inappropriate colors, and overall finish looks quite well done.
It's a bit unfortunate that this one's shorter than even the Gideon's cruiser, but I think I can live with it.
And I'm also kinda hopeful that the proportions won't look as bad (if still noticeable) when you look at them with your own eyes, what with perspective and all that. Unless it turns out to be really fragile or ugly, this doesn't seem too bad an option for my first lego ImpStar model. (Minifig selection is pretty good for me, too. Navy officer, technician, gunner, and navy trooper.. those are my favorite imperial classes. Honestly I could use one or two more of those navy work men instead of Vader or Stormie)
Anyway, I would definitely love to see your review on this, Jang!

To me this looks like the best ISD LEGO has honestly ever done, even better than the UCS one. The bridge is too big, yes, but not extremely so, and the ratio of studs to tiles is excellent. But it’s way too expensive and the Cal figure is very lacklustre.

so back in 2021 lego tried a concept for making smaller ships for cheaper, like the $40 tie fighter, the x wing, the slave I, and these turned out amazing for their prices!! its just that it feels like now lego is still using the same concept but except they're raising the prices now which is not ideal..

  • @Longdog73
    @Longdog73 4 місяці тому

2014 one was 19 inches long, and this one is 18 inches long according to Lego. It looks like they moved the bridge a lot further forward, maybe that’s why it seems so much smaller? Regardless it hurts to have Cal and bd1 split across two $100+ sets, especially since the Mantis at this scale would make such a good set

LEGO has to always try and balance out their two audiences: adult collectors who want detailed sets for display and children for whom the set is a toy. It feels like more recently they are catering toward the adult collectors. Many older sets weren’t as accurate or detailed but instead we had more play features and more unique ones.

Comparing it to the first order star destroyer, along the edge this one is about 55 studs whilst the first order is around 58 studs. Not much shorter in length so it’s about the same size as the last star destroyer we got. However the price should definitely be 140 tops. Or they could have included more figures to be fairZ

Man, it just had me thinking about your "price going up, but size is going down" comment. It's nuts to me that the the 2024 Star Destroy has over 200 more pieces than the 2014 Star Destroy but manages to come in shorter.
I kinda want the set so I can figure out how it's designed on the inside that makes it so over engineered to need more parts but come off as shorter.

It’s a shame that LEGO is milking consumers simply for the Cal Kestis minifigure which is a disappointment, especially considering the quality of the Capt. Rex minifigure that’s coming in the microfighter set for $15! Plus the SD is laughably small for the price.

I don’t want to be overly negative but it’s upsetting that Lego said they weren’t going to make any Jedi Fallen Order sets back when that game came out, but then they made the BD-1 set and still said they wouldn’t do any others, and now they made an exclusive Cal that’s only available in an expensive set that’s not themed to either of the Jedi games. So if you want Cal and BD-1 you have to buy 2 expensive sets (or two overly expensive secondhand figures) and they still probably have no plans to make actual sets of the games. I can’t remember their original reasoning for not making sets of the Jedi games, but apparently they’ve realized that they can still make money off of the fans without giving them what they want and somehow that’s easier and more lucrative then just giving us actual Jedi game sets that thousands of people would definitely buy. Lego’s money making strategy is just really infuriating sometimes.

I like to compare new sets with other sets that are currently available in its relative price range rather than comparing sets to older versions. The most direct comparison for me is the ornithopter and yes the ornithopter is $5 more but for that you can far better playability and displayability, not to mention better figures imo. I get it, Disney tax and all that but it’s hard for me to look at this set and the ornithopter and see any semblance of equivalent value between the two. This feels better for me at $150

On the fence about this. I have that First Order Star Destroyer, and while I want to replace it with an original trilogy one, the wonky proportions definitely give me pause. As for Cal, I may need to sacrifice Qui-gon's poncho from the Sith Infiltrator and use spare parts to attach BD-1.

  • @dunwannitok

Those anniversary figures hurt sets more than they upgrade them.
    1. They take crucial part budget out of the build, especially since thing are already shrinking due to general economic considerations.
    2. Instead of focusing on the main star of the set, the ISD, all of my attention goes to the lack of poncho/bd1.
I want a Cal Kestis, but why insist on putting him in a set that has nothing to do with him if it only makes both the ship and the figure compete so badly? The could include him in a small set, like the battle packs they did for BF2.

Yeah definitely on the stubby side. It would've been better at an even 2 ft(61cm) vs only being 18 inches(46cm), especially for a playset that should be more spacious. The price to piece ratio isnt terrible and for the amount of minifigs you get, especially the unique ones, it was going to definitely affect the price. Ill have to pass on this one. Im not interested in playsets these days so half this sets value would be wasted and Im not comfortable with $160. I think the next Star Destroyer Id like to have is a midiscale version as that set line seems pretty popular. We'll probably see it for the rest of the 2020's. Lego has to be pretty close to releasing one of those in the near future already having a Super Star Destroyer and Tantive IV

Seriously, it's probably almost at the same scale as the invisible hand, for example. This is one of things that exemplifies problems with modern lego design. Now obvioulst every era has flaws im not saying "when i was a kid everything was better" but there comes a point where sacrificing size for durability is ridiculous. I think oego from the late 00s to the mid 10s generally had the right balance, like the sets from the snake cultists era of ninjago or power miners. Not too fragile but also not miniscule and over built.
