For all the Sith Infiltrators we've gotten throughout the years, it's kinda mad we've never gotten the J-Type 327 Royal Starship which a third of the movie literally occurred around.
I guess it's because LEGO doesn't produce chrome pieces anymore, and that would take so many. Mind you, they could probably do it anyway in Metallic Silver.
@@PerovNigmaI feel like they could do it similarly as the mandalorian helmet, being grey but with metallic silver accents. The fact Saw has the one piece that should be Maul's lightsaber hilt as part of his staff while Maul is still stuck with the 1999 style hilt blows my mind.
I want to agree, but if you put standard lightsaber blade pieces into either side of the long hilt piece, the resulting weapon is just far too long/tall for a minifigure, without the minifigure being able to hold it with both hands as would be most accurate. You can use the short "shoto blade" elements, but then it looks strange to have the blades nearly equal in length to the hilt. So, while I don't think the original lightsaber hilt piece is a great fit for Maul's saber, I think it is still the best available element currently. As is almost always case with Lego, some imagination is required.
People keep focusing on the pupils and saying it’s because he is a sith, but that’s not true! They have been not doing pupils on ALL characters with colored eyes, just like Hera Syndulla. As Jang says, this is to put characters with colored eyes in line with the Lego style.
I don't know man. Back when i was a kid i had the Sith infiltrator 7663, and sure it only had Darth Maul and no horns for him. But i think i would have felt a bit bummed out if it came without a cape and hood, which completes his menacing Sith appearance. Especially if you wanted to reenact that scene.
I want to say thanks jang for all the years of community and happiness your videos have brought me. Its hard to really enjoy lego the same way I did back when I was building powerminers, space police 3, fantasy castle, and later wave 2 ninjago (that og lightning dragon). Lego REALLY loves this ship! For the life of me, I can't figure out why they're so hung up on this one when there are sooo many amazing, unexplored ships in- universe 🤔
To this day I still don’t understand why Maul can’t have the Monkey Kid piece of his lightsaber hilt. Regardless this ship is fine. $70 is tough. I’d want like two or three more figs. Shmi would be nice, and then maybe either Obi-Wan, Padme, or Watto.
Agreed. The elongated hilt in silver should've been a running change for all new Darth Maul minifigures moving forward, similar to Darth Vader's two piece mask and helmet combo.
It might be that they have to redo the lightsaber pieces to be the shorter ones. wouldn’t be exactly proportional to maul’s height in minifig form. Then again, none of Lego is proportioned properly so…
I'm a bit surprised Lego didn't include a hood piece for Maul since they've included both the hair piece and the hat/helmet/hood piece for other figures in the last few years. Including the hood piece and/or a cape you would have had Maul from every scene of the movie.
I always thought the pupils were meant to be sith eyes. The pure coloured eyes work for characters like Ashoka, but I prefer Maul and palpatine to have the black dots since it makes them look more disturbing and unnatural
I just watched Rouge One last night. I was annoyed with the color, but the last scene he’s in where he steps outside it’s clearly a dark green. The cape is incredible completely spot on. Agreed the hair is off. Should be dark grey.
This set is awesome! I had the original from 1999, but this is a big step up. Always good to get a Darth Maul minifigure! They even have the double red lighsaber even if the scene in the movie didn't have that.
Thanks for the great review. This is a perfect example of how a review should look. Praise where it is due. Fair and constructive criticism. Overall informative and enjoyable.
I built the UCS TIE Interceptor earlier this week. In all honesty - it did my head in. It has made me decide to not buy any UCS models anymore. This set on the other hand - I loved building it. I loved putting all the different layers down to make the main hull of the ship - it was so satisfying. This has to have been one of the most enjoyable things to BUILD in a long time. It's almost exactly the same size as the original 1999 one, and seeing how they are making shapes that no one thought possible back then is such a beautiful thing to look at.
i think the problem with green saw gerrera, is how it looked in the render. it was so much brighter and greener. but the actual colour is a far closer match
The print on the dish on top of the ship looks good too. I think it's important to point out good work as well as the poor, like you did with the good print on Saw vs the poor on Qui-Gon. I agree with you on those.
For the Saw figure, I like the colour and LOVE the cape, but to me the face looks like it has the facial hair of young Saw but the expression of old Saw. They tried to capture a little of all versions and fully captured none of them.
I personally like the new eyes, obviously it looks different and we're so used to the old ones so it can be weird to adjust, but this is more consistent and Lego like.
I really enjoy watching you reviewing these sets for what they are, 9+ toys, not some adult mad collectors future investments, going hard on company for every single minor detail most people don't care about... sure we pay good money for quality but come on... I agree on pupils issue.
Replacing the Saw head with the one from sw1186 with the raised eyebrow and angry look is way better for the resemblance to Whitaker. A wrap-around ventilator mod is a must for completing the look.
Totally agree with your take on Maul’s eyes. I liked the look of the older eyes, but this is more accurate to Lego’s style and I’m glad they changed it. Also I hadn’t heard anyone complain about the Saw Gerrera figure, and comparing the minifig to movie pictures I still think it’s pretty near perfect. I don’t think Lego could’ve done much better
I’ve built the set and I’m giving it a 7/10. I’ve not had a Sith Infiltrator set before, but I think it’s reasonably well built and good value for £59.99. There’s a lot of detail, and the updated Anakin and Qui Gonn are nice. Saw Garrera’s first ever figure is great too.
Speeder is good sized. that tiny speeder, is probably one of the better scaled ones compared to minifigs. better being slightly small than Gigantic (like every battle pack speeder ever).
Love the look of this set, but I'm gonna wait for a sale before getting this. Very cool review, glad you're being no-nonsense with certain fans who parrot the same opinions like "No pupils? This minifig is terrible now!" or "Saw Gerrera doesn't wear green! Unforgivable!" It's really refreshing.
Considering Obi-Wan's Starfighter comes with hair and hood - a smaller and less costly set - it's very cheap of LEGO to not include that option for Maul here. It's not the end of the world, but it's not excusable either.
Builds like this where the play features are kinda meh adds new life to the set for me as an adult collector. It’s a chance to alter the set to make it more in-line with what I want. The only downside is the price being about $10 too high. Great review as always!
Is it possible that Qui-Gon spilled blue milk on his pants right before the scene and then that was the best he could clean it before he got back to the ship?
I feel like this set is close to being great, but there's some flaws that instead just make it good. Since I don't have a version of this ship though, I went and put in a pre-order for it
I don't think most people were complaining about Saw Gerrera once the images of the actual figure came out, they were complaining about the render which has a much brighter color which looks bad.
Do all of these LEGO Star Wars superfans *not* know what LEGO's colors look like? We could clearly see the figure was going to be dark green just like all of the customs out there. There should have been no confusion.
I knew I preferred the no-pupils Maul for some reason! I didn’t notice that the old Maul didn’t match the Lego style. Pupils never captured his likeness for me.
i would argue the dark green on Saw is actually pretty close to his Rebels armor color, if I'm remembering it right. not that it matters though, it's a nice looking figure either way.
This again really shows how Lego pieces struggle to make rounded shapes. I think this would be really evident if they ever tried to make the Nubian starship. Someone on the Star Wars design team must have really liked the SR-71 Blackbird. I know it's my dad's favorite aircraft.
I enjoyed this set. For $70 it’s not bad. It has all the okay features of past models and some new more accurate details. Wish maybe a Obi wan and Padme figure would Of been included. Maul’s ship isn’t one I’d personally wanna pay over $100 for so I dig the smaller version of it.
Jang spot-on as usual. Thanks, Jang, for your neutral perspective on all things Lego and Star Wars especially. The community needs more level-headed people. 🙂
Hey Jang, I recently bought the set Daffodils, and I don't think I've ever put together a bunch of those pieces that make up the stems, but it's not at all smooth, there are noticeable little ridges as you go from one to the other, sooo, has that type of connection always been as such? Because that felt kind of... disappointing? Maybe it's just me wanting it to be perfect, or my brain thinking it'd be only logical for it to be as such when I imagine how the pieces might be made, so I'm not sure
To be honest, I love the Saw figure. It may not be super accurate, but I think it looks great and I will be searching for a minifig on the secondary market, because I don’t want to buy this set just for the fig.
I don't like the Bomb space, could have done something else, but the interior and the Green blasters are so smooth, That and Saw Guerrera might be the reasons to get this set.
If these crazy play features and level of detail were scaled up to a model the size of 75096, we'd finally have the perfect Sith Infiltrator. This one is cool but still a bit too small for my liking.
Personally I absoloutley loved this set, bought it day one. Im not even sure why i love it maybe its cuz i had the 2011 one but idk something ab this is so nice
That print quality has been the same for almost every Qui-Gon minifigure that Lego has made with leg printing. Nearly every Qui-Gon has that se slightly translucent print.
It doesn't get any better than that from Lego unfortunately. Jang wasn't unlucky here, it's been like this for years and years! But I completely agree with you. Lego should do better!
It surprises me that Maul hasn't switched to using the Monkey Kid staff part for his lightsaber handle. No hate or anything I just thought it made so much sense when that part came out.
It’s not a big deal, but I wish LEGO would take the time to care to give Qui-gon a black Lightsaber hilt, because his hilt in the movie is mostly black.
I disagree about the droid drop. I think it's a good use of space. You can just about fit a minifig in there, and you can very easily fit Anakin in there. That means kids will be throwing minifigs in there and dumping them out the bottom. I can see huge potential for play.
I really want to like this but it just has such a schnoz on it... think imma try to pick one up at a bit of a discount (hopefully, im in CAD...) and try and mod it.
I don't get all the fuss about maul's eyes. I mean, I got the Death star 2 final duel Diorama as a gift and the emperor got a similar treatment and I didn't see any complaint back then. Maybe did I miss it though. I love this new set. Not to pricey for what you get, compact and packed with fun stuff. My only gripe is that Qui Gon's legs should've been dual molded. I know it's most likely expensive to make, but since most jedis would benefit from such treatment, not doing it everywhere is a miss IMO.
So whatever preliminary pictures or rendered images we saw of Saw made the color look horrible (that verbal repetition was not intended). The real photographs look much better and I like him a lot now. Still, I think a simple dark gray would have been better and closer to blue. Though it may not have been accurate, I would have liked to see sand blue (of which they already have that piece in that color) over dark green.
I started out this review somewhat unsuspecting, I'm not a huge starwars guy so I guess I wasn't too much in to it. I heard Jang say: "I paid 17 dollars for this set", granted .. it was with a lot of noise in the back, so I missed the "Seven, Zero" right after it. I was immediately intrigued by the prospect of having a good priced set in this day and age. Despite the set not having a great color scheme, great minifigures or a very interesting design, at least the piece count and starwars IP would cost more right? Well, as it turned out, I misheard what I wanted to hear. 17 dollars for this would have been amazing, even for someone like me that never buys starwars and would probably throw the minifigures in a box to never use them. But paying 70 dollars .. not so much. I can buy two great boardgames for that price, this isn't even half the scale of what you would want for your minifigures and for 70 dollars I can probably make 2 awesome looking spaceships by ordering parts seperately and designing my own. This is a solid review though, I like that the design includes a storage space for the droids and a play feature to release them. The shooters integrated in the hull up front and cockpit in the back are both nice touches. I don't know if this ship is supposed to look like this, but the color scheme is just too boring and bland for me. If this is what current Lego Star wars is, I think I didn't miss much. I even swapped to another video review of an older version of this same ship from 2015 (set 75096), that one is a bit better for sure. At the very least the scale and interior are a lot better used to fit with minifigures. If you can get a larger version of this for 100 bucks retail, I would probably get that one instead, at least for people that are interested in collecting these ships.
I'm getting used to Maul slowly, I got used to Palpatine more quickly, but when the time comes to make pre-Mustafar Vader, I think that's going to look a lot worse on the light flesh tone. I also feel like the backlash to Saw Gerrera stopped when people saw something besides the awful render.
Great review Sir. I want this set, but will not pay a penny over $55 for it. I'm hoping this set shows up at Sam's at a discount. I think it is a Walmart and Lego retail exclusive...Sam's makes the most sense. I wish it was at Costco though. The new pricing and sizing are a bummer...$15 overpirce hike across the Lego spectrum with no justification for most sets.
As a self-certified Lego Critique like all Lego Star Wars fans though, I personally approve of the new eyes. It's one of the 0.01% that I approve Lego of doing. This should tell you how good it is considering how high my standards are with my superior judgement and taste 😂
10:32 is a shame with the printing, does the community make Lego aware or maybe they just know products sell regardless? I would love to see a display, adult sized version to go with the Tantive and Star Destroyers

I know it's most likely expensive to make, but since most jedis would benefit from such treatment, not doing it everywhere is a miss IMO.
man, if i had a luke's landspeeder for every darth maul's sith infiltrator lego has made
I don’t know how Lego can produce such an awful leg print on Qui-Gon and release it. It’s not remotely close to the torso colors.
That boi JANG!!!
I think Saw Guerrera was greenish in the Andor show.
I kinda wish saw didn’t have an alternate face, just so you’ve got the option of bald or not bald, not a major issue just slightly disappointing.
I am Going To pick this set up on sale
im waiting for lego to release the tentacle torture monster saw gerrera microfighter to own the scalpers epic style
Can you not buy this at Targets? I haven’t been able to find them at any and that’s all I have nearby:(
I be like....." what jang say about that thang tho "
I think it would have been better in black.
Again, another Lego product that could do with some slight modification to make it look a bit better.
this thing is so sick
Should be 50 euro's tops... Does look very nice thankfully!
And that is why I always say "Seventy dollars U.S., Seven-Zero" 🤣
I still think the face of the 2007 Maul minifig looked more like the character in the film.
I have the original one still looks good
Great review Sir.
“DUCK ANAKIN!!!!” “what I don’t see a duck?”
Written and directed by George Lucas
I think they could have done Black for Saul
Wow. That print quality on Qui-Gon's legs is awful. How is Lego not able to get it right?!
Something about the proportions of the area right in front of the cockpit just looks so wrong to me.
10:32 is a shame with the printing, does the community make Lego aware or maybe they just know products sell regardless? I would love to see a display, adult sized version to go with the Tantive and Star Destroyers
