Great video Rob! I think the special thing about this channel is that pretty much everything you teach in your videos can be applied to building a bigger business long-term. When I first started web design, I only really thought about design and the technical aspects of building a website. Now I see web design is just a useful skill that can help me build something even bigger (and keep me paying the bills/enjoying life in the meantime).
Ya even very profitable web design work is still stuck to a freelancing business model. This can mean a lot of money fast but it can also dry up just as fast if you stop working. A business built on top of web design skills though can play by different rules - it can be fully automated or outsourced, it can be independent of your time, it can scale faster etc. --- The best approach (imo) is using web design to get to a level where you can see you adding a lot of value to other people's businesses. Then you know you are quite likely to do well creating your own business.
This is exactly my approach and my motivation for beginning web design right now. I just left another business that I started with a friend and realized that if I want to continue I need to learn from other business owners to create successful opportunities for myself. It was a serendipitous surprise to come across this channel, and I'm finding your content super helpful :) Keep up the excellent work!
yes thats what im doing right now Using web design to get my foot in the market to know exactly what the clients need and care about awesome video , thank you so soo much
@@RobORourke I just want to understand one thing from all these videos on YT, how can a website design generate sales-with no paid ads or seo or doing GMB ads? If its a new site, is it possible. please through some light
TLDR of this video: the difference between the 100K and the 1 MM a year web designer is the latter focuses on how to scale themselves beyond their clients. Figure out how to scale, and the rest is history.
This is very helpful. I was actually planning on building a marketing product in a boring financial sector that has lots of lucrative deals but hardly any online presence.
Build in residual income - it's kind of on-going work but also not. I self-host all of my client websites. I maintain the CMS software, extensions, backups, hosting, firewalls etc. and also allow for a level of work each year per client to update text and images within the website. This is what has allowed me to grow, and for my clients it leaves them with peace of mind that they don't need to worry about anything. As my client base continues to increase, so does my residual income and I've now been able to invest in some additional support to the business to allow for further growth and also further improved customer support :)
Hi Rob! Love your videos. Can you please make a video on the administration side of a web design business ? How do you process payments and how do you deliver the digital assets to the client and what tools do you use along the way to keep the client updated with the process (slack or email) and if you use tools like Trello or similar tools and how do you streamline all these tools that together form an end to end design process (from the administration perspective). Also the tools for the payment processing. Love your content so a big thanks to you
Good video! I already have a remote job so just going to focus on building apps and some websites. Don't want 30 random calls a month to update a color or t/s a down site.
This is a great video I watched months ago that helped me in an in-direct way. Helped me re-evaluate my job role. I thought about how exactly the project/work I was doing was generating revenue--how my client was building revenue from the work I was doing. In my situation, I thought the exact industry I was in wasn't profitable nor sustainable for me (might for others), so I switched and now feel better off. Thanks!
This is very interesting. I just started my business doing websites, logos, and more and I'm feeling lost! I've done 5 websites at this point but they have been for cheap or nothing.SO to hear you can make this much is crazy. I put so much work into the websites I design. I'll look into the SEO stuff! Thanks!
would you like to share your portfolio with us? Maybe this community could give you some feedback. I remember when I started, my first 3 websites were free as I wanted to build my portfolio. There is nothing wrong with starting small.
Good video, I’ve kinda been thinking about that topic lately, as I been getting into web design but still have some doubts about the future of it as I often read and heard about the market being oversaturated and web design being a dying niche and what not so it made me kinda hesitant.. I figure that even IF it should come to the point where web design is no longer profitable I’ll still be able to apply all the skills I learned with it in other areas
Exactly. I wouldn't say it is dying (since everything is going online nowadays) but IF you use the same approach as everyone else it is getting crowded. If instead you focus on getting results, helping a business grow, solving problem, creating sales there is ALWAYS work. And ya long term the skills you get on top of web design is what matters. In 10 years maybe web design isn't even the same - you got to think of what skills last longterm.
Cinemashot Critique I wasn’t saying that as a fact it’s rather just something that I stumbled upon from time to time when doing my research before I started getting into it. Apparently some people say that because there’s a lot of folks moving into web design and also the prevalence of WordPress nowadays
Hi Rob, Love your content great tips. However, I have a question. You keep telling that in order to get a client you need to show him that you are able to give him the sought result. 100% agreed but how do you deal with getting traffic on your websites? My company has done a couple projects in Poland but none has achieved any impressive results apart from being a good looking website. Now I am trying to start doing some projects in the UK but I have problems with getting clients. I have been doing some cold mailing and cold calling accordingly to your earlier tutorials but there have not been any good results. Do you have any advice? Thanks for your time.
Another quality video! Hey Rob I've got a couple of questions for you... The first one is in your opinion why do web developers go do junior office jobs and get payed significantly less than if they had just freelanced and work with a commission rather a hourly rate. because in the UK juniors get payed at first around 30-40k a year and if they had just freelanced and did a project for a business every 2 weeks for 2-3k, that's already 48-72k a year. My second question is also about web dev jobs in the UK. In the UK, web developers are payed significantly less than in America if they do office jobs. My question is does that translate over in doing freelance jobs in the UK or does it solely depend on your soft skills and value you can give to the business.
1) Probably job security and consistent work. Lots of people can be good at building websites but that doesn't mean necessarily a good website business. If someone can't sell or learn how to find clients then maybe they will just go under someone else and just focus on being one part of a bigger biz. The upside is a steady paycheck for now. The downside is they are going to find it very hard to increase their wages over time and to control their own income/freedom. 2) The US pays so well because there is a tech talent shortage (supposably). This is one of the reasons there is a lot of demand from tech biz in the US for foreign work visas. In the UK there is just more people who are willing to work for less. This means you are unlikely to get the high wages a similar role in San Fransico would get. But as your OWN business you can set your own prices. You don't have to be limited by a wage or set industry standard - you get paid directly related to the value you provide and the solutions you create.
Also as a junior you're going to be a bit hard pressed to start charging 2-3k out the gate. Clients low balling you, company politics making the website take ages to complete (too many chefs in the kitchen), then building a network to consistently make 2-3k a month takes time. Most juniors I've met are always looking for freelance gigs to do after their 9-5 but they've found it difficult to find clients willing to pay the money to sustain a full time freelance lifestyle
I create so much value from my clients but I live in an area that people just don’t make much. Luckily The city i live in created a program to help business’ pay up to 5k for digital marketing and web design projects. I was lucky enough to be one of the businesses listed. Hopefully we can get the government to give out more grants to freelancers so we can actually get paid the right rates. It will only make the economy better if people use it correctly.
Great video, can you do one from $0 to $10.000 a year, I'm struggling to close deals, I know I need a portfolio but even emailing businesses to redesign their crappy websites for free and still get no responses
Start with people that already know you. Build for them a website. They'll introduce you to new people. You can quickly grow trust through connections and networking.
Eventually a company will offer you shares for your ongoing website management and you might cash out at the exit w over $1M. Wishing you all the best 🙏🏽
Ah don't do mass emails at all. Go for personal emails that have a very high chance of getting a response. The mass email stuff is the wrong approach - it teaches lazy thinking and rarely works to get big/decent deals or clients.
Rob, I know you have mixed thoughts about Wordpress. Though, BBC, The Walt Disney Company, Bloomberg, Beyoncé, Usain Bolt, and other high level names use Wordpress. What are your though with applying your web design strategies and selling Wordpress design projects for small businesses. What would you suggest charging for a Wordpress website?

Ya an app, software, offline biz etc is going to be a LOT more scalable than a web design business. BUT web design is a great place to start since you can learn so much so fast and get cashflow going.
@@RobORourke Hmm web business can scale a lot. Look at Chris who you just did a video with, he profits millions a year. But he's quite the exception huh

Fox Web School I watched it, you used to have good content but now it's all bait click and targeting non professionals. I've been a software dev for a decade now and wouldn't refer to a business owner in web development as a web designer, it's comparing apples and oranges.
@@jameswrightson744 I don't see how it is clickbait when this is exactly what people do to create serious wealth on top of web design skills. Maybe it isn't your type of video but it is hardly BS. Fox Web School you compared a "very successful business owner who had web design experience" with "web design" literally side by side - they are totally absolutely different fields and you can't justify comparing them based on the content and target audience you have.
