I loved the review of the comments and I can honestly say you have also inspired me in many ways. Before I felt that people who dressed well every day were proud, vain, show offs trying to impress (and conversely belittle) others. When I really put effort into dressing well I felt self conscious and misunderstood by people who complimented me. Your perspective has really changed my view and I am very grateful. Beyond just looking well kept (like before) I do understand the value of using my best things and trying to be well presented and a bit dressier each day. Thank you!

Oh I am so glad I somehow came upon you! What a great video, thanks for sharing your stories with us. I really need to think about the dressing well...oh my gosh, flip flops made for the shower really hit me. I know they're not attractive and I have so many cute shoes. BUT my shoe closet is right by the door and you know what I grab?? Flip flops, with jeans...sometimes with holes. Oh wow, honey you will make me rethink that one. I have started a routine on eating well, this is day 13...and I am going to be intentional on dressing well, love and thanks ~g

I remember visiting Honduras in 1993. I traveled by bus and was amazed to watch as we passed villages with straw huts--and women coming out of them dressed to the nines, nice purse, styled hair an, carrying their matching heels in their hands as they walked out onto the road to catch the bus. Wow. Central Americans, I've learned, also place a huge value on personal appearance.

I love your books and I love your thoughts on dressing well, and living life in a gracious lovely manner. My family always felt dressing one's best is a daily endeavor, and clean an neat was a basic minimum. I am a middle aged woman, but I still love to hear and read about living life well. Thank you for passing this on to your generation and those younger. Clothes are fun and looking clean and nice is a gesture to others, not vanity.

Hi Jennifer I've just watched your video and first of all thanks for taking time out to do it. Since following you I have been putting more thought into what I wear and wearing make up to make myself look nice. And you're quite right that you feel much better when you go out. Thanks for the wake up call.

It would be great if you could continue the flow of this conversation about dressing well. Rachel Zoe, fashion stylist, said, "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." I am a fashion stylist, too, and I have always tried to teach women that what they wear is sending a message. For example, I dressed a woman for her husband's funeral. She had two teenage daughters. I hugged her and said "Now, what do you want to do, mourn this loss, or show your girls how to celebrate their father's life?" She chose to celebrate! I dressed her in an Audrey Hepburn black dress with heels and pearls. She looked gorgeous. When her daughters appeared they cried because they were proud of how beautiful their mother looked. We need to learn to use our clothing to say "I AM WORTHY OF RESPECT!" Let's GO girls! Thank you, Jennifer, for allowing us to talk about this crucially important topic for women!

Thanks for teaching us about being a gracious host. I know growing up in a home where having guests was a very infrequent event, I never saw how to be a good host. I believe that most of us learn by example growing up and without those examples it's difficult when unfamiliar situations come up in life. I also am uncomfortable being someones guest (especially overnight) as I'm not sure what to do or what not to do.

Watching this months later but I'm always amazed at how well dressed people are in Jamaica. It really does show that dressing well really doesn't correlated with low income, it's obviously something that comes from within, or is a part of a society. My Mum has ALWAYS dressed well, never had a jammie day in her life, but I never really got till now. Thanks so much for your channel and your books.

After watching this video, I started to observe people in stores, on the street, etc. and realized that you are right: most of us dress sloppily!! I also purged my wardrobe and kept only what I felt looks really nice on me, etc. Thanks for the great tips about dressing well, I hope you will have more videos on that topic

I agree wholehearted, you don't need to spend a fortunate to dress and look nice. There are always $10 off $25 coupons for JCPenneys or other stores & a few nice cotton t-shirts with a cute pair of capris or slacks, a scarf and there you go! Plus there's Goodwill, resale & charity shops that are loaded with name brand items so take advantage & dress up look amazing for yourself, your spouse & family. Don't be the mom in the grubby clothes!

One of the very first times of practicing hospitality as newlyweds, my husband and I asked a couple (whom we had recently met) for supper at our apartment. The couple arrived about thirty minutes early. For some reason, I didn't have my shoes on yet. I grew up in a family where you never, ever ran around barefooted if guests were present, but there was just no polite way to scamper upstairs to get my shoes on. It was awful! Then, to top it off, the lemon chess pie I made was way too tart. (As in, the pie was not edible!) Doubly awful!
I am happy to inform that somehow I overcame that night, and my husband and I have gone on to host a multitude of people in our home--always with my shoes on! ;)

I can't wait for a third book! I just bought your second one and I love it so much.
My hostess horror story is when I get invited in and before I'm even in the house, dogs jump on me and get dirt and hair all over my clothes. To add to the horror, the host and hostess know I am allergic!

Thank you for talking about your writing routine; are you likely to ever expand on that? i.e. The creative, the focus, the difference between edit mode and story time, and how you inspire each one? I would find that intriguing. I hope you have met your deadline. Thanks again. Rachel

Even a casual dressing situation can be done intentionally. I think that is where we Americans have gone wrong. Just because you are not wearing your best dress doesn't mean you don't take pride in how you look. Chinos and a Polo used to be casual. But then sweat pants, yoga pants, pajama bottoms and tshirt became casual. Take back your dignity for crying out loud. The F**k it attitude has helped no one.

Love your videos i think i just watched them all! Question about dressing nice with young kids... you mentioned in another video wearing an apron at home--I'm on it! What about when you're out with them? With 2 young kids under 3 I feel like they're almost always eating or doing something messy when we're out so i'm afraid to wear anything nice--especially white, which i love wearing. thoughts?

Yeah Uganda! That's how we do :)
If you go to a church in the U.S. vs. a church there, you'd laugh at the irony. It's sad really. You are right, dressing well has little to do with money. It's more about dressing in a way that reflects gratitude.

I have my one year old baby in my lap, and she usually bangs on the keyboard when I watch UA-cam videos. I had to laugh because she is absolutely mesmerized by you and keeps imitating all of your hand gestures. Toward the end of the video she squirmed out of my lap and crawled into the next room. She's wearing only her diaper, because, well, I homeschool her siblings and dressing her (or myself) is not always a priority until, like, lunchtime *blush*. When she came back, she had pulled a frilly lacy shirt and some shorts out of a basket of her clean laundry. She stood up next to me and gave them to me, obviously wanting me to put them on her. Children are so wise ;) babies aren't vain but they seem to intuitively know that there is always value in looking our best.
I thought you might want to know that baby Beatrice wants to be chic just like you, and maybe she can even teach her mama. ;) We love all of your videos.

I struggle with self esteem and I realize that I need to change the way I dress. I live in the country and wear "work clothes" most of the time. They are faded, stained, baggy and worst of all...masculine.

Hi jennifer! It's so true what you say about dressing well: nothing to do with money. I'm a student of law and in my class there is a woman who her dress are orrible. She dress expansive because she wants show other she has money and tell everybody that she spends 500 € for her shoes. Nevertheless Everytime I saw her I think: "what exactly is she wearing??!"
